While we've had good experiences in the past, our most recent experience is lacking. We called last week about someone coming to repair what appears (still) to be a clogged drain. The original date of service was pushed back a day- no problem, it's only the kitchen drain that is the issue. When someone did arrive, he spent the time commenting on the crappy plumbing job and stated that he couldn't flush the line because of said crap plumbing job. Instead, he quoted us the cost to replace the plumbing in the kitchen and continued to state that it would be under warranty then. Great, except we're a family of five that has had to eat out every meal at present and we'd call someone out to clear the line. Also, the crap plumbing in question has worked fine the 9 years we've lived here without issue. It is a clog in the line (we found that with our own auger) that he refused to clear without repiping the whole thing. In the end, he offered zero help and advice, only telling us how bad the plumbing job done before was. So, we sent him on his way with the service call fee and will be calling another service provider tomorrow and in the future for all services. read more

Woodfin found problem with my furnace on Saturday Parts need to be ordered and estimate cost of service. Monday arranged return for Tuesday service. Returned Tuesday evening with parts needed. The technician was courteous and ready to start work . Arrived at just before 5pm stayed and completed repair Just After 7pm. Did not just wait till the next day but completed the needed repair that evening. Completed what needed to be done even having to work in the crawl space late into the evening. One of the biggest things I had to learn when I moved to Richmond was what oil heating was... I know it may sound ridiculous, but when I lived in DC and Philadelphia, I always had electric, so I never realized you could heat a house with oil! Thank goodness my husband was a bit more familiar... So when we bought our house in Lakeside, and I had to make sure the damn oil tank was full, I went with the first company to offer their services (via a flyer on our door)... Woodfin. Woodfin has a good reputation in town and while their prices are a bit high for my taste, they do a nice job. We were on an automatic plan where they came and checked our tank periodically, and refilled it when it got low. We got charged a set amt each month and so we basically ended up paying continuously even when we weren't using the oil in the summer... but that was just a cheaper way to pay instead of getting slapped with a huge bill three times a winter. However, after the first year of doing that, I did decide that I'd rather pay a giant bill a few times a year, rather than have a constant payment due each month- so I called and cancelled our service. So I was SUPER SURPRISED a month or two later when I got a notice that they had been to my house, and filled up my tank! I had cancelled in writing, and sent the cancellation in with my check and they did cash my check, so I know they got the cancellation note as well! So I had to call, and talk to a salesman, who was very nice, and offered to give me a discount on the oil that had been put in our tank. I was sort of in a pinch because I understand that they can't really take the oil they had put in out, so even though it wasn't ordered, I was essentially stuck paying for it. I guess it was nice that he at least gave me a discount, but it was still pretty annoying. After that incident I decided to shop around and find other local suppliers who might be cheaper, and I did find one who was willing to come out within 24-48 hours of being called, so we now get our oil from Fitzgeralds- their prices are cheaper than Woodfins, and they are responsive. Hunter came out to the property to inspect the furnace and after 30 minutes he said the whole entire furnace needs to be replace and I would only have to pay for labor, which was over 1,500.00. I could tell the young man did not know what he was talking about. So, I had another company come out...White Glove Plumbing - Heating & Air and Nick inspected the furnace and simply said what piece needs to be replaced which cost me less than 200.00 for everything...my heat works perfectly, thanks to Nick. read more

Woodfin really pulled through for me today. On the hottest day of the year in RVA (about 99F), of course my A/C malfunctioned. I just bought my townhome about 7 months ago so I'm still getting used to being a first time home-owner. I came back home from a short grocery trip only to see an error message on my NEST smart thermostat. Disconnected it, reconnected it, spent an hour on the phone w/ NEST support to get an idea of whats going on...swapped in a different thermostat and it still wasn't working. Wasn't getting any power to the 'stat no matter how many times I tried numerous different things. At this point, I'm very nervous and extremely worried. I called M&S and Anderson and I got average to above average customer service and both said they would call me within a few hours to schedule a tech to come out. As I'm writing this @ 11:45pm, still no call! I happened to call Woodfin after seeing/hearing their commercial and the receptionist was nothing but helpful, prompt, professional and kind. She understood the issue I was having and took it upon herself to coordinate w/ the tech team. Within an hour I had Michael Jordan (no, not the MJ, but just as tall) calling me telling me he's on the way. As he arrived, another Woodfin tech called me (this was an HVAC guy) saying he was on the way too. I couldn't believe this! They sent both an electrician AND an HVAC tech to diagnose the issue. MJ spent a few minutes in the attic and then came down and said it was a job for the HVAC guy and then asked for his number so he could call him and explain. Then waited outside and chatted with him for a bit before Larry came in and fixed the issue. HUGE thumbs up and BIG shout out to these guys that solved the issue within a few hours of me calling in a frantic panic. The plumbing experience I had with this company was the worst. The plumber that came to my house charged over $500 to unclog my toilet, told us he snaked all the way to the street... so not true. I ended up calling them back out the next day less than 24 hours and they told me, no warranty on unclogs, pay another 300 and we will use the camera this time. I still feel like I was robbed by this company. Especially since calling someone else, they even concluded the plumber never did what he said he did the first time. Yet his boss defended him. With this company, the customer is NEVER right. read more

Update on July 15: I will say that the service people that came out leave something to be desired however working with Donnie and people at a higher level was a pleasure. They offered a full refund and even helped reimbursing items I had to buy to clean up the water and pay someone else to come out. They said they would have someone could look at the rug which we haven't done yet but I will say I'd rate Donnie and people within his office high. I'm changing my review cause if they're service. I feel I can't hold the whole company responsible one bad person. Absolute horrible experience. Woodfin came out Monday morning since my air was not working since Sunday night. Two guys came out and said there was ice blocks in the air handler and it would have to melt before doing anything. I said I understood but they told me they unclogged the drain and it might leak a little but it would be nothing to worry about. Then he talked me into maintenance plan and I agree cause it sounded like a good idea. So left the air off and fan running all day till 7 pm like i was instructed, the air still didn't work. Called back Monday night and set up a call for Tuesday. Tuesday morning went downstairs and the basement was drenched with water it was horrible. Woodfin showed at 10am and the guy came down to look at the air handler in the basement and first words he said is he doesn't handle the water leak and I'd have to call the office. He said that 5 times. After that he said the air handler was fine and he would clean the outside unit and he said he checked the drain and it was clear so it shouldn't have leaked. Well that's absolutely false. Anyways I was nice and said ok. He then tracked mud all over the carpet area that wasn't ruined yet. He then disappeared for 10 mins and came back and tracked more mud and said he cleaned the outside unit and give it to tonight and should be fine. I didn't know any better so I said ok and just asked for some advise about all the water he said call the office again. So 4 o'clock rolls around and the air still isn't working and the water was getting even worse after I vacuumed it up and put fans on it so I called in. Spoke to 3 different people who refused to do anything for me and told me to call Servpro which I didn't think I should have to since it wasn't my fault but it was so bad I called. Servpro said they can't fix the leak just clean it up. So that didn't help cause it was still leaking. So around 8 pm I had another cooling company come out. They were amazed about the quality of work or I guess lack of work woodfin did. They outdoor unit was filthy! We should be all the dirt in the coils and took of the door and showed me the dirt there. Then he went inside and took apart some the air handler and cleaned some thing and then he took the drain pipe off and IT WAS COMPLETELY CLOGGED!!!! This is after 2 trips for woodfin flailed they fixed it. If they had fixed it I wouldn't have a basement full of water. Just completely unfair and unreal. He however got everything fixed and even stayed till 1115 helping me vacuum and double checking everything Woodfin will probably reply saying Call the office again but I got scammed for hundreds of dollars for services the claimed they preformed but did not and has now lead the thousands of dollars in water damage. I will be exploring my options especially due to all the evidence I have read more

Well where do I start. 1st off when we met with the salesperson to have gas logs installed he came out and went over all the pricing and quoted us a price and we agreed to have the services done with tank top off every month . We were told that it would be a few weeks for the logs to come in and they had a loner set that they would put in until our set came in. They never came to install the loaner set instead brought two space heaters to use till the logs he ordered came in which costs more in electricity and never heard from them until they came out to install the logs. They completed the installation including filling the tank then we started having problems with fumes in the house. We called them again, they came out to discover that they didn't vent the logs properly. They sent a crew out to remove the chimney liner and put in a damper which they knew previously when doing the site visit. Then we were supposed to have the tank topped off every month but that never happened and we ran out of gas during the winter storm we had in January. Mind you my dad is in his 80s and handicapped! They came out and filled the tank a few days later and installed a monitor to let them know when the tank is getting low but here we are again he's almost out of gas and I called Jan 29 to get the tank filled and talked to Cherry the night dispatcher and she informed me that they only come out on certain days and could not get here till Feb 1 he will be out of gas by then when I asked to have my call forwarded to one of the Woodfins she kept stating that they will come out in Feb I stated that would be to late and I wanted to speak to someone to get his tank filled and when I got upset and started talking louder she told me she was going to disconnect the call and then hung up!! If I could have another service come out and take over this I would get them. The service is piss poor and the supervisor Cherry needs some customer service skills and to look out for your customers especially the elderly!!! read more

We renovated our kitchen that required removing the existing plumbing in one step, then installing new plumbing. They gave us the best quote out of three, but screwed up and needed to come back twice to fix problems. Their response was great. They're big enough to absorb mistakes, but small enough to respond. read more

They fixed the access plumbing pipes ok, I guess, but I had problems with the handles and tub spout installed by a fraudulent plumber. I asked the tech to make sure the stems were good, and the diverter on the tub spout was okay as I was having problems with both. He said he checked. No he did not. I was told over and over that tub spouts and goose necks faucets drip constantly and that the spout dripped also because I have a long pipe in the wall. I have had that same pipe in the wall since I bought this home and did all the work my self since 1997. Now I am ill and am at the mercy of contractors. Do I have stupid written on my forehead? I have never had a constant drip in my bath or the kitchen goose neck faucet in 26 years. When I turn it off it's off and doesn't drip. They also said, "Well, things are made the same as they used to." Lazy is what the Woodfin techs were! The fraudulent plumber also had replaced my kitchen faucet. It also dripped non-stop now. I had someone other than Woodfin replace that faucet and guess what...yes, it stopped dripping. Not one drip. The tub spout continued to drip. I finally was able to get the handle off the cold water and the nut inside was not tightened. Once I tightened it the spout stopped dripping, but I still have problems with the diverter in the spout and now it barely works at all. I also do not have the same water pressure as I had before and the hot and cold not the same. Who knows what all that scammer plumber messed up but the Woodfin guys that came out didn't care and didn't do their jobs...but they sure charge a high price. I will never call them again. Woodfin, women and ill people are not stupid. Your work ethics have certainly changed but you still charge a premium price! read more

I called Woodfin to help me solve the heat problem upstairs. They worked with me, explained all my options and helped me choose the right one. I paid a small fortune for my two wall mounted AC units upstairs but let me tell you....they have been wonderful. I can now set my downstairs at 70 and it stays cool since it doesn't have to cool the upstairs. I had been setting it at 65 in order to cool the upstairs. And it has made all the difference in the world upstairs. My electric bill this month was....ready for it....$80 less than last month and it's been hot outside. I may not live long enough to recoup the cost but I will gladly take the monthly savings while I can. I highly recommend the wall mounted units and Woodfin! Woodfin for the win read more

First time writing review but since the Contact Us function on the Woodfin website only allows 250 charterers I figured I will post here instead. I've used Woodfin once to repair the HVAC for my house and had a great experience. Naturally, I recommended Woodfin to my friend when the AC at one of her rental properties wasn't working. She was traveling for work and asked me to help her out. I didn't mind helping since I understand the hassle of having to deal with HVAC or other house related issues. I typically don't get off of work till 4:30pm so she called Woodfin and scheduled the latest appointment possible so I don't have to miss too much of work. She called on Thursday and Woodfin called back the next morning and confirmed appointment after 4:00pm on Friday. Around 1:00pm I got a call from Woodfin asking me if they could come early since they have a canceled appointment. I told them I am at work and have a meeting so I couldn't meet them early. The scheduler was very understanding and appointment was kept at after 4:00pm. So I left work early and rushed to my friend's house so I wouldn't be late. Got there at 3:55pm and met with the service tech Jeff F. I could tell he didn't want to be there on a Friday afternoon and has a bit of an attitude. He went outside to look at the AC condenser so I followed him to see if he needed anything. When he saw me, he said "what do you need?" in a very snarky way. Was I not allowed to see what he was doing?!?! The last service tech I had with Woodfin explained everything as he was doing/testing it. At no point during the appointment Jeff F. explained what he did or what he was doing to me. So after a little while, he told me the AC condenser was dirty and clogged on one side. When I asked him what was causing the condenser to be clogged on one side, he literally scoff out loud. I tried to be nice and agreed to have him cleaned the unit for $191 just so he could just get it done and be on his way. The only good thing about him is that he was honest about not needing to get an overpriced thermostat from Woodfin. He told me he has one in his truck for $300 but I could go to Lowe's to get a much cheaper one. Went to Lowe's this weekend, bought a thermostat for under $30 and replaced it in less than 30 mins. One last thing, Jeff didn't wear shoe covers when going in and out of the house like my last service tech did so there was dirt all over the living room and upstairs bedroom/hallway. Overall not a pleasant experience. Not sure if he was having a bad day, didn't want to work late on a Friday afternoon or something else. Please don't force your employees to work when they don't want to and spare both the employee and customer from an unpleasant experience. Woodfin has lost me forever as a customer. And next time my friends or coworkers ask me about HVAC companies I will give them my honest opinion about Woodfin. read more

I recently moved to the Richmond area and needed some work done on an older home that I purchased. After seeing reviews for a couple different local providers and checking pricing, I decided to go with Woodfin specifically using a whole house agreement since they could address multiple needs. I was happy to find a provider that can address all the service elements in one shot rather than having to find a different company to address each. Additionally, pricing was very competitive and/or better than competition via the whole house agreement. I needed and had three different technicians out to review different and distinct areas where expertise was needed: one for electrical, one for plumbing and one for HVAC. All three were very thorough and took time to answer all my questions, physically show me what they found, explain any issues and impacts, and finally make solid and reasonable suggestions for resolution where needed. I was a bit skeptical that the whole house agreement would be just an avenue for Woodfin to upsell additional products and services and in practice found this was NOT to be the case, nor was the service a quick in and out spot check. Each individual cared about delivering a complete analysis and provided complete maintenance to systems where applicable. I'm very please with their services and staff. I will recommending Woodfin to friends and family and I recommend them to you! read more

Woodfin's service was great and their response time was outstanding. I called because the A/C on our 3rd floor was not working at all. They were able to come out within two days (would have been sooner except for my schedule). The person on the phone and technician were both courteous and professional. I ended up getting service maintenance agreements on all our systems. The technician was here for a several hours and did a thorough job evaluating and repairing the situation, as well as explaining it all to me. UPDATE: All of the above still applies. But I paid $900 to them this morning. Just got my mail and found a Woodfin mailer with. $25 coupon off a service. I called to ask them to issue a credit for $25 and THEY WOULDN'T DO IT!!! Are you kidding me?!? When I pressed, they said if I mailed the mailer back to them, they would issue a credit for a future service. Ridiculous!!! 2nd UPDATE: wood fin responded to my my comments and issued a credit for $25 so I am changing my rating back to the original 5 stars. read more

Although the actual technician and work done was great, they WAY over price the part and service! They almost charged double for the part and the service charge was $800 for about half an hour of work...that's crazy! Thankfully they were willing to negotiate the price some but it was still about $350 more than competitors. It's too bad you have to do your own research on parts and then negotiate to get a fair price. read more

Great customer service, the workmen that came to the house were all very professional and courteous, there were no "surprises" after an estimate was given, they all arrived at the expected time, performed all the work in a timely manner and made sure everything was the way I wanted it. do not let them convince you that your new hvac is covered under a 10 year warranty when you purchase. it is not!!!! they end up sending you a bill for $200 per year for the warranty and on top of that, still charge you a $100 to come out. read more

I'm spending a great deal of money (11,000.00), and paying cash (check, actually), having a propane powered whole-home generator installed. Yesterday, the generator itself was installed, and the ditch dug in my backyard for the line from the propane tank to both the generator and my fireplace. Today, I woke up under the weather - it's 1:45 and I'm still in my pj's and robe. The Woodfin team arrived at around 8:30 AM, and began installing the tank without having the courtesy to check in with me - and I had questions. And so now, the Woodfin guys are gone, the tank is out there, but the ditch is still there, and nobody ever told me when things were going to be finished. I had to call both the salesman and the Woodfin office to learn that it might take another 10 working days for inspections and final work to be completed! This kind of tortoise-like installation schedule was not made clear to me by the Woodfin salesman back in October of 2018, when I signed the sales contract. My problem with Woodfin is lack of communication - I don't like it when contractors arrive at my house and do not check-in with me, and then leave without explaining to me what they've accomplished, like they did today. And, I don't appreciate that such a long installation process was not made clear to me by the salesman way back in October. Here is an update to my review, as of 2/10/19 - last night, the local temp here was down to 21 degrees, and my heat stopped working. The interior temp of my house got down to 64 degrees. When I called my HVAC folks, James River Air, they came out and said they couldn't fix it because: "Found heat pump working properly. Woodfin installed new generator and disconnected strip heat inside air handling unit. Didn't hook back up. Customer called Woodfin. Collected $99 by check, # 3110." I've currently got Woodfin at my house to fix the problem. And I think they should reimburse me the money that I had to pay James River Air to diagnose the problem! Nobody at Woodfin ever told me that by them installing a whole-house generator, my heat wouldn't work because of it!!! read more

Woodfin is a great company. They have done almost all of our air-conditioning, heating, plumbing and electrical work for the past three years. They have usually been on time. We have an annual contract that is supposed to give us a discount, priority in scheduling and annual inspections. Our most recent inspection found several weak capacitors that needed to be replaced. I also suggested installing a condensate pump instead of relying on the drain line which has been a problem several times. They accomplished these repairs in short order. The previous service call involved a blocked main plumbing drain. The serviceman did not arrive until late in the day and did not have the necessary equipment on his truck. His quote was much higher than I thought was reasonable so I had him wait while I called another large nationally advertised company specializing drainage problems. Their quote was several hundred dollars less than Woodfins so I dismissed Woodfins plumber and had the work done by the other company. read more

I use Woodfin for heating oil, and for that purpose alone they're fine. If your A/C is on the fritz and you need it diagnosed, you can do better than Woodfin. They charge $99 just to come to your home and write an estimate and $300 to diagnose an issue - keep in mind no actual repairs are included at this point. I understand the diagnosis isn't and shouldn't be free, that's someones time / experience and it's valuable... but there are more affordable and equally experienced options. read more

After today, I would definitely give them NO STARS but this site won't allow that! My husband I called to have our fireplace fixed. We both took off work and were given a 4 hour window for them to arrive. After 4 hours, no call and no show. I called the dispatcher who said they should be calling shortly. Another hour went by, no call. When I called back, she had a nasty attitude. It is now 7 hours since they were supposed to be here, and no call and no show still. Will never, ever, ever call them again for anything! read more

Worth the time to read if you are in the market for HVAC system. Woodfin stepped up in a difficult situation. In August I elected to replace my failed propane emergency heat unit and try to reuse my 12 yr old heat pump that was still running (In fairness to Woodfin they tried to discourage me from doing this). Anyways, sure enough after installing the new furnace and bringing the house back down to temp, the compressor failed within hours. As a homeowner I was skeptical...feeling like they may have done something to hasten its failure. A difficult situation and conversation to say the least. After sending technicians back out for three hours, they could not resurrect it. Initial conversations were that prices had gone up since original quotes and it would take a month to get in the midst of peak cooling season. Kudos to the sales associate Jason who knew it was not going to sit well if that was the best they could do. Rather than press the issue he escalated to management. Robbie, (one of the managers) stepped in, contacted Carrier, and sourced a unit that could be installed that same day. In addition, rather than try to get me for the original quote or more, Robbie discounted the system and got it qualified for a Carrier complete system rebate. It is in the difficult times that you learn the most about people or companies. What I appreciate is that they did the right thing without my having to raise my voice or threaten them with negative reviews, etc. I will certainly consider them for future projects and would recommend you do the same. read more

Corey and Jeremy were at our house last week installing a new A/C, heat pump and re-doing our duct work. Both of them were very nice and polite, and extremely professional. They showed up on time if not early every day, and were great to work with. They were in our house all day for three days straight, and each night when I came home I couldn't tell they'd been there. They did a great job cleaning up after themselves, and getting the job done as quickly as they could. They kept in touch with me throughout the days with updates and any questions they had as well. I would highly recommend Woodfin, but especially Corey and Jeremy. They were really great to work with. read more

I called Woodfin with an emergency plumbing problem on a Monday at about 10 am. Within less than 2 hours, even though I had never used Woodfin before, plumbing technician Andre Wright was at my doorstep. He was extremely courteous and knowledgeable, and was able to fix my broken sewer ejector pipe quickly and professionally. He didn't happen to have the correct check valve on his truck, but he went out to the plumbing supply store and got the parts he needed to finish the job ASAP. The pricing for the emergency service call was very reasonable. I am pleased to have called Woodfin for this service and will continue to use them in the future. read more

Their delivery driver, sorry didn't get his name, was super nice and courteous. They had the best price on propane by far. Other companies at this time are saying that propane is in a shortage, and I got prices from several of them, and some were about $1.50 gallon more than Woodfin. read more

Over the years, Woodfin has changed. We call them out of habit and they have installed a number of heating and cooling systems for us over the past twenty years. Going through invoices, I see that we have given them more than $60,000 of business in the past sixteen years. We had been loyal customers. We will unfortunately have to move on. This past year, we are being continually harassed to pay a bill of 162.44 that we do not owe. We have talked to the business manager on a number of occasions. There have even been threats of going to collection--not too worried as we don't owe it--but still. The bill is for work Woodfin did that we did not order, because they could not do the work we DID order and which they said they could do. Hmmm... We had scheduled Woodfin to clean our air ducts. (They installed them when they installed an expensive three zone system a few years ago.) When they could not perform the work, they cleaned our dryer vent instead. Whaaaa???? We did not agree to this service as we are capable of cleaning our own dryer vent. I contacted the office on numerous occasions about the bill. I thought I got through to them. Nope. This week, I received a NEW bill for the same amount with a different service memo for the same date, hence this review. This is bad practice on so many levels. It is obviously terrible not to take care of loyal customers who pay a lot of money for your services. But to harass loyal customers with a bill for a service they did not order because you could not perform the service you scheduled (and said you could perform with ducts you installed) is crazy. read more

Technician has been here before, remembered he was here and was as always, knowledgable and courteous. Explained everything and answered all questions. Did not push us one way or the to sign up for service contract. Explained both sides and let us decide. Would definitely recommend. read more

As usual Woodfin was fast, courteous and knowledgable. We called about our air conditioner right after lunch, and they arrived within a few hours. Ryan arrived and was pleasant and helpful.
