Great bar; I won't hold that it's an Ohio State bar against them. Their food is great. I had the smoke house burger, and man that is a great burger. Maybe next time I'll be bold enough to try the burger with fried egg and bacon jam... because really, bacon jam. My partner had the French dip and said it was excellent. Our server was great, giving us just enough attention so we didn't feel ignored. We topped it all off with a skillet cookie . It did not disappoint. They make it fresh, so it was warm and delicious. Also, it was huge... we couldn't finish it. Well worth the splurge! Okay. Before you all start scratching your heads wondering what I was doing in this place, a place that is clearly for a younger crowd than the one I run around with, I was there for Sunday brunch. I think the manager was as surprised as we were that we were there as he came over and warmly welcomed us, telling us after we asked, that the average age was usually in the mid 20's but if we came early in the evening, we'd be okay. Ha! Made me laugh! Figured we took his average age up for the month!!! But back to brunch. Not bad although know that it's a bar that serves some egg products and pancakes. I was in a good place with the salad I ordered but my friend's scrambled eggs and bacon were a little uninspired. But they got my other friends special order perfect so big points for that. And if you like cheap drinks, the mimosas and bloodies are on sale during brunch which is perfect for the clientele. The inside is actually very cute with sort of a northwoods ambiance. AndI liked the multi colored stools around the communal tables. Our server was nice as was the bartender and the food came up relatively quickly. The best vibe ever. Could be dancing all night long. Decent drinks but wow. What a vibe.

Great place for drinks and even some apps too if it's not crowded. Their beer selection is pretty good, and like their sibling restaurant Fatpour they have the enormous beer mugs too if you go with the larger option. If you get one of the shots on special (or maybe they rotate when they do it) they'll serve them with a big sparkler and a bunch of noise, which can either be really entertaining or awkwardly awesome depending on the crowd and whoever's receiving the shots. Their food is also pretty good too -- and if you aren't hungry when you get there, you probably will be once you smell the wings and other snacks coming out of the kitchen. The soft pretzels and boneless wings are good options and usually my first choice, but the burgers and caesar salads are good too. The other cool thing about the place is that it has three different levels, all of which have a slightly different vibe, from the retro basement/rec room from the 50s to the brighter upstairs that's more sports oriented and has bigger booths that aren't as cramped as the ones on the ground floor. read more

For starters the "manager" had a smart mouth and is not polite or understanding. Whatever you do, do not order the chilaquiles, gross and bland! Waitress was nice until she started accusing my cousin of pouring more mimosas than paid for. Woodie's is one of my favorite bars in Old Town as it's very down to earth, they have good specials, and have decent food. I've been coming here before/after my intramural sports games lately and found my experiences to be good. For example, on Friday night my buddy and I came here before our intramural beach volleyball game to loosen up and we ordered the best deal, a 16oz PBR/Budweiser/Bud Light and Jameson/Malort/Fireball shot for $6 on Fridays. We were going to order two shots of Jameson as we didn't want to have to chug another 16oz beer before the game due to bloating. But our waitress said it was cheaper to order the special and she told us she would save our beers for after the game. Lo and behold, we came back to Woodie's and she remembered us and let us have our beers. Of course we ordered some more rounds to celebrate our volleyball win. For food, I have ordered the Mac Attack Burger, Motherclucker sandwich, Double Decker Nachos, and Biscuits & Gravy for brunch. I loved the Mac Attack Burger and Double Decker Nachos. The burger was simple and delicious, while the nachos were huge and were enough for 3 people. The Motherclucker sandwich (Grilled) was a little dry and needs extra sauce and the biscuits & gravy were average. I think their fries are pretty good as they are lightly salted and very crispy. Their sliders look good and seem to be a popular menu item. Woodie's also has a good selection of beer, but their daily specials are very good overall. FYI, Malort is misspelled on the daily specials Friday page of your website. The place is small, but they have 3 floors, 3 bars, and a decent sized patio. Woodie's is always slammed when I come in and rightfully so as it's a good bar. Prices are average for Chicago. The ambience is very laid back as most of the crowd is either from intramural sports or millennials going out on the weekend. They are an Ohio State bar, which I despise being a Purdue Alum, but I think Woodie's is a solid bar and I enjoy coming here. read more

We recently had tickets for the second city main stage and wanted to grab a bite to eat before the show. I turned to Yelp, as always, and saw the great reviews for this place. Bonus, it was a block away from the theater. I also loved that I could make a reservation right from the Yelp app. We arrived and were greeted promptly by a friendly hostess. We opted to sit on the patio and enjoy the late summer day. We ordered drinks to start, which were a little pricey but it's Chicago so, eh. We weren't very hungry and wanted to save room for the cast iron cookie so we decided to split two appetizers. We ordered the pretzels and the sliders. Both were delicious. The honey mustard was the best I've ever had. For the sliders, we got the cheeseburger, pulled pork, and the torta. My favorite was the pork. I didn't try the cheeseburger but my hubby liked them all equally as they each had their own distinct flavor. He couldn't pick a favorite. We would definitely order both dishes again. We also ordered the fresh baked cookie. They didn't warn us it was going to take a half hour to bake and almost had to leave without it. I think they rushed it as it it came out soggy. It tasted good but I've had better. (The Pizookie at BJ's is to die for!) The service was slow and our waitress was awol most of the time we were there which is why I took off a star. Fun little spot. My friends and I decided to give Woodie's a try because the reviews were good. The food is just okay. I ordered the chilaquiles with chicken and a scrambled egg. There were sooooooooooo many chips. Too many chips so the dish got dry. There weren't enough eggs to balance the egg to chip ratio. From what I could eat, it wasn't too bad. My friends didn't say much of anything about their food, so I can't say they loved it or disliked it. I did try a bite of my friend's pancakes and he said, they're just simple pancakes. Nothing exciting. The plus...the drinks were strong! My friends had cocktails and I had a mimosa. I can appreciate a restaurant that actually gives you champagne and a splash of juice instead of the latter. If anything, I'd certainly drink there again. Came here on a Monday night after seeing a comedy show at second city. Wanted some late night snacks, and saw that they had some specials going on for the night. Their $5 burger special caught my eye, so we hurried in away from the cold. And wow their $5 burger special is such a steal. Burger was decent but so much better than going to some fast food joint. They also have a good variety of beers, and even $5 Jameson shots special for the night. Definitely a solid bar to relax with some friends and enjoy their amazing deals. What a great spot in Old Town! My fiance and I came here with his local friends to catch up with everyone and have a few drinks. We snagged a booth upstairs in the back, and boy am I glad that we did. This place was JAM packed, but it was a Saturday before New Year's Eve, so DUH!! What I loved most about this place, was even though it was like packing sardines in here, we still had a server come to our table to take our drink orders, and process payments. That way we did not have to move a muscle to try and cram ourselves at the bar to get served. Most bars will have tables, but no service to them on a busy night. The beer selection was fair, I could have asked for more, but since this was an OSU Woodie themed bar, I think they met the needs of the typical crowds coming in to watch games of all sorts. Is this a destination restaurant in Chicago? I personally would say no; but what I will say is that it's an absolute blast as a bar and if you happen to end up needing to eat here while you're out indulging in some beverages they definitely have some decent items for you. We were sponsored by woodies for a summer sports league so we came here nearly on a weekly basis for appetizers and beverages. Their half price wings are honestly pretty disappointing as they may be the tiniest wings I've ever seen anywhere. But, they have bomb chicken and waffle bites and their soggys are also pretty delicious. I've only eaten dinner here once and I got the chicago dip burger and it was pretty decent overall. The staff is super friendly here and typically go above and beyond to make your experience enjoyable. One of my friends happened to be here on her birthday on a weeknight and was given all star treatment with balloons and free champagne. Needless to say they have high quality customer service. I can here on a Saturday night and this place was jam packed, impossible to move or even have a conversation with a friend. Walking in Woodie's is very narrow with one bar upstairs. After standing around trying to get a bartenders attention for awhile I noticed that there was a downstairs. I pushed my way through the crowd and went downstairs. The Downstairs is also narrow, however, I was able to successfully get a drink down there. It was less crowded and also had a couple tables to sit at and also a nice shelf built into the wall so you could put your drink down. The bathrooms were also located down here. The drinks were ok, nothing too exciting. Glad I checked it out, but I won't be in a rush to head back. There are spots in the city that are much nicer, less crowded and more fun. read more

Friends, please listen to me when I say this: DO NOT GO HERE!! The so-called "manager" is, hands-down, the absolute WORST. She acts like she's either drunk or on drugs. And if you have any issues, trust me, she, alone, will ruin your night. Before I had the most disgusting takeout experience of my life at Woodie's last night, I used to love the place. I placed a simple takeout order: a salad that comes with fried chicken. When I placed the order, I confirmed with the person who took it that, yes, we wanted the fried chicken that comes on the salad. When I picked the order up from the bartender, he explicitly confirmed that I was picking up a southern salad with fried chicken before I handed him my credit card. We have ordered the same salad from Woodie's in the past, with fried chicken, and it has always come with fried chicken. So after I picked the order up, paid for it, and had walked half the 25 minute return walk home (with my dog alongside), I initially laughed at my girlfriend on the phone when she asked if I had checked to make sure the order was right. I opened the box and peeked inside. No fried chicken. I was no longer the one laughing. My dog and I turned on our heels and headed back to Woodie's. The "bouncer" outside was kind enough to offer again to hold my dog while I went inside. Once inside, I approached the bar where I had originally picked up the order. The friendly bartenders who had been behind the bar when I picked up my order were no longer there. On the contrary, a smug-looking troll stood towards the back of the bar. As she watched me approach, I saw her eyes roll. I took a deep breath. I had the wrong order in the plastic bag that I'd been given when I picked it up, and I had the handles of the bag around my wrist so I could carry the bag while walking my dog. Mind you, we were already late by this point, and I was in a hurry to get this over with and get back home. As I quickly approached the bar, I swung the bag (wrapped around my wrist) up to place it on the counter. In doing so, I explained to this new person behind the bar that the order was wrong. As she moseyed toward me, she barked, "You don't have to throw it at me." Even excusing her tone and stance, given the circumstances (i.e., her standing at the back of the bar when I approached and my simply swinging the bag from my wrist up onto the bar), I thought she'd offered this hyperbolic remark as a joke . . . and expected that she would follow it up with a laugh. But I was wrong. No laugh ever followed. (So at this point I was thinking, as anyone else would be, "Wow, this person must not be normal!) Instead, the troll behind the bar continued with the barks and the snarls and the unintelligible howls, and, as far as I could gather, she felt like she was doing me the biggest favor in the world to fix my order and give me what I had originally ordered. She walked back to the kitchen and returned to tell me it would take six minutes to fry the chicken. I responded very kindly that I had a dog outside, was in a hurry, and would be outside. At some point after this, I am sitting outside on the curb with my dog and on the phone, and the troll manager creeps up from behind me and shoves an open takeout box in my face. As I am hanging up my phone call, she barks something about how she had fixed my order in four minutes rather than six. So I end my phone call, stand up, and try to engage in a conversation with her. But as soon as I start talking, her mouth starts barking, trying to talk over me. I am graciously patient. And I tell her I am willing to wait until she finishes until I start talking. But, once again, as soon as I start talking, she starts barking again. So I left. Once we arrived home, the salad (i.e., $15) quickly went straight into the trash. The "quick-fried" chicken was inedible. It broke a plastic knife when we tried to cut it. And the rest of the salad, which had apparently been reused rather than remade, was wilted, mushy, and also inedible. In short, never once did Woodie's so-called "manager" acknowledge the mistake, apologize, correct the situation appropriately, or act like a manager. She clearly knows how to use her mouth but not her ears. She needs to go. To the self-proclaimed "I try to respond to Yelp messages as soon as I can" manager, if you are reading this, DO NOT TAKE THE TIME TO RESPOND. INSTEAD, TAKE THE TIME TO GO FIND YOURSELF ANOTHER JOB. Make sure to book reservations of 6 or more early as their booking system is a little wonky and may require contacting their sales manager. On weekend nights, Woodie's is a fun bar with a millennial vibe. It is more of a chill bar vibe rather than one with dancing. While vacationing with my wife in Chicago, some good friends of ours told us to hit the local bars in Old Town. As we Ubered over here, our driver told us about this place. We thought we'd take him at his word, and it did not disappoint. We were seated promptly. Our server was very friendly, and the dish I had was awesome: buffalo chicken mac and cheese, with two slices of butter toasted bread. I then washed it down with Chicago's own Eugene Robust Porter, by Revolution Brewing. It went down very smooth. The server was surprised by my beer choice, she said everyone goes for the IPAs, it's nice to see someone order a porter every now and then. This tells you it's a local favorite. Most traveling beer advocates just order the local IPA (I'm digressing, but some of you know what I mean). Ok, all boner jokes aside...I thought Woodie's ROCKed it... HARD! It's the only place in Old Town I could probably PITCH A TENT and camp out at for a few hours. Between the tasty eats, STIFF drinks, and awesome music it deserves a FULL SALUTE as far as I'm concerned. Although they're known for burgers I did some cajun shrimp tacos and a few Old Fashions on night one and honestly you never would have known it was their first night open. The staff was super friendly, food was delicious and came out quick, and they have $5 Fireballs all day everyday. Also notable was the music selection which was fantasticly random. If you ever play name that tune it's the perfect place to exercise your skills in that department. Definitely going to be back for more in the future.
