Purchased a game for Nintendo Switch with a cover that was completely in English, but the game turned out to be Japanese. You can still play it, but it's clearly not the english version of the game. When I tried to return (only asking for store credit) the man working there was extremely rude and only offered to buy it back because it had been sold new. He informed me that they were an import store and that I should have known better that it wasn't an English game. Extremely rude and poor customer service. Most of the staff here are really nice, the store is very clean, and the used PS3 & Xbox 360 games are moderately priced. However, there are a few factors that earn this place a 1-star rating. First, NEVER trade in your games here. You'll either get robbed from the store or the homeless people on the corner (doesn't even matter that the police station is across the street). Second, the prices on nearly all the toys & plushies are way overpriced. Third, I understand that retro game collecting is an expensive habit, but the prices on a lot of these games are absolutely absurd. I've bought games from ebay and other stores at the fraction of their prices. Finally, the manager at this place has a serious attitude problem. I was with my daughter an hour before closing, and he had the nerve to kick us out. Honestly, fuck that guy and his store. Go to A&J Games instead. read more

I've gone to this store for repairs and they always charge a reasonable price they've repaired my ps3 controller and ps4 controller. After leaving the remotes the called me to let me know what the problem with them and if I was ok with continuing. I like how they have their own parking lot but it scratches the bottom of my car but that is not their fault. read more

I really like this place. Their repair service is pretty great, I've fixed 2 of my gameboys and hope to take my 3ds soon. Very friendly people too, they'll chat with you if you're in the mood for it. What keeps me from giving 5 stars is that some of their libraries are pretty limited, particularly gamecube. I also wish they had a way of keeping updates on their stock, it'd make the trips easier to justify, traffic on vermont is always awful. read more

Once I get there they said they can't help with out an ID. World 8 is the final level in the Super Mario games! Hah, I get it now! For so long I've wanted to visit this place and see if it would exceed my expectations. I had seen all the Yelp reviews and the pictures and just had to see it for myself and I FINALLY did. Let me recap: PROS: --NOSTALGIA. They have retro/current-gen/next-gen consoles along with a nice selection of titles for each console. It's always a welcome sight to see a Super Nintendo and a Playstation 1 console in good condition. Let's not forget the handhelds, either! --COLLECTIBLES. They do carry a few nice collector's edition boxes of select games. For example, they have the big Metal Gear Solid 5 box in NEW condition! That is something not even Gamestop carries! They also have some plushies and statues. If you missed out on these, then you might find it here. --PAY-TO-PLAY. It costs $2 to play a game on their HDTV setups for 30 minutes. I always seem to forget that not every kid that plays these games can afford these consoles, which is why they come here. SILLY ME. --STAFF. If you know what you're looking for, then the staff can be just as helpful. Just tell them what you want and they will look for it. If you come here with no clue what you're looking or doing, then you can't complain if the staff can't help you, STUPID. CONS: --LOCATION. The store is located in the heart of Koreatown on Vermont Street. Traffic is ALWAYS congested and there are days when the streets are closed off, making parking behind the store a complete pain in the ass. And becuz of that, I have to knock a star off the score. It's not the store's fault but if I have to tackle thru Hellish LA traffic on the WEEKEND just to get here....then I have every right to be pissed. --SIZE. The store is about the size of a normal Gamestop store so don't expect a massive warehouse like Game Dude in the Valley. --SELECTION. The store carries a handful of titles but, just like Gamestop, they won't have everything you're looking for. I wish they could have massive amounts of titles to chose from, but they don't. --PRICE. I was a bit peeved when I saw some of their prices for several games. I mean, $28 for Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube?? Does anyone even own a Gamecube anymore? And $25 for Deadly Premonition on the PS3? That's the same damn price at Gamestop! C'mon, I thought this place was supposed to be competitive in prices! All in all, this is a place that is nice to visit at least ONCE. I walked out with a nice selection of PS3 games and I wasn't too disappointed. If you are looking for another place outside of Game Dude in the Valley, then give World 8 a try. Just watch out for the really, really bad LA traffic in front of the store! It'll ruin your day. A few weeks ago I started having issues with my Nintendo 64 which wasn't reading none of my games. I decided to bring in my N64 console for repairs. When I arrived at the store, the employee's greeted me and asked me if I was looking for something that day. I told them I needed a repair and one of the employees' asked me, "what is wrong with it?". I had described everything that needed to be repaired and then they took me to the register to make a deposit fee (which is then deducted from the total cost at the time of pick up). Fast forward, I picked up my console which they had cleaned and they fixed my pin connectors to the n64 which wasn't reading the games. When you pick up your console, they give you a receipt that provides full details of the repair and manual labor. Plus, they give you a 30 day warranty if the issue still persist for that specific repair. The warranty does not cover any other issue that was not originally turned in for repair. They tell you that and it is also stated on the receipt. I also really appreciate that they tell you their store and return policy. When I got home, I connected my N64 to play some of my old games and I am happy to say that they did a great job. It has been more than 30 days already and I have NOT had an issue since the repair. Thank you World-8 for the best repair service. Their staff is also very friendly. I will be recommending your store to my friends. read more

This little game store is just okay. Their decor is great, and love that they have a tiny little lot in the back. Their stock ranges from used console games, to Nintendo 3DS's, to gaming-related earrings and toys. The staff isn't that great, though. Not as friendly as I had hoped, and the prices are okay. You would hope a little hole in the wall store like this would mark down their prices but unfortunately some items seemed priced higher than enough. I guess that's what you get for little mom-and-pop shops. I would shop elsewhere, or online. read more

If it's an older used game that doesn't work and they have no more copies you're stuck with store credit. I usually don't take the time or effort to post bad reviews. But my experience here was one of the worst I've ever experienced in any store. They have posters on the wall in store and I asked if they were for sale. Th employee said no and that was that. A little later while still in the store I asked the employee how they originally got the posters and he started yelling at me that they are the employees's personal posters and that some posters were from friends. But I asked how they were originally obtained, expecting to hear "They are from GameStop" or something along those lines, wanting to know where they were originally purchased. The employee just kept yelling at me that they weren't for sale yet we had already acknowledged that they weren't for sale. I was in shock he was yelling at me for just wanting to know how they were originally obtained. He was lucky no other customers were in the store or it would have been a major embarrassment for them. This review is for the Little Tokyo location as I couldn't find that location for the store on Yelp. Never going back here. Which is a shame because they have cool retro video game stuff. read more

I went in to purchase a gaming system and game to be nostalgic and all. They had what I wanted and was excited. Paid with cash and I left. Got home and set up everything only to find out it doesn't work with any of my current TVs, all newer smart TVs. I go back sad that it didn't work, return the items. Expecting to get my cash back I'm told I'll get store credit. What kind of policy is that? I give you my hard cash and when I return something all I get is store credit. I can't think of any other brick and mortar store where they don't give you back whatever tender you paid with during returns, unless you don't have a receipt, which I did. So best believe I'll be contacting the BBB and filing a complaint against this company. I have loved this one lace since I moved down here but this has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Guess I'll take my business to eBay, pawnshops and GameStop BUYER BEWARE with their "return" policy, essentially all sales are FINAL. read more

There are tons of places to go to if you are looking for retro or current generation games and World 8 is one if those places you should check out when you are in the area. One there is a lit of great places to eat in the area which is a plus and the store while a bit cramped has a big selection of games. Prices for games vary and you may find some good deals here and there but since it is a store you will usually see a few games a little over ebay pricing but that's normal since they do have overhead and have to pay employees so I don't usually mind too much. Its a place you should check out once or twice, they also carry various figures as well so you might find something you like. read more

This place, I actually never knew it existed till recently! Our PS4 was not loading/lagging, so we took it in to have it looked at. Our diagnosis was it needed a new hard drive, and they were able to fix it better then ever within a few days! Not only that, the employees working there were super helpful and friendly! I am really happy to know there is a store like this, and highly recommend to others to come here and check it out for themselves! !BUYER BEWARE! Bought a used 3DS XL and a used 3DS here. Drove all the way home to find out the 3DS XL was previously modified and faulty, the staff had never bothered to check on the DS prior to buying it or just never fixed it. I called them and had to drive all the way back, the manager was SO sleazy and unprofessional, trying to say it was my fault and that he would not issue a refund. Instead he said he would have a tech guy fix it, so I had to wait till the next day. The tech guy explained to me that the previous owner had modified and corrupted the 3DS XL, but he "totally fixed it!" even though it was still obviously still glitchy and NOT okay to use. I demanded a refund because they sold me a faulty product and ACKNOWLEDGED IT WAS FAULTY. A different manager was working but he was just as nasty. Raising his voice at me and saying they don't give refunds, even if they sold you a shitty broken product. After 20 minutes of explaining, they finally issued me a full refund. Unbelievable. DO NOT GO HERE. STAFF AND MANAGEMENT ARE ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. I recommend Gamestop or ANY OTHER gaming store. read more

World 8 is one of the last great video game stores in Los Angeles! Unlike Game Stop, these guys are legit. Not only do they have new games, but they also specialize in retro gaming. Plus, you can pay to play pretty much any game on any system! Edgar and Izzy, the owners, are video game NERDS. And I mean that in the most complimentary fashion possible. They know their games and will do anything they can to help you out. On a side note: They hold tournaments (sometimes off suggestion) ranging from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to Super Mario Kart (yes, the SNES version). AND... you can sell and trade your games too! This store is only getting better. Every time I go in there's something new to geek out about. This place is Awesome! Talk about a great privately owned Video game store with tons of stuff! I don't understand how anyone goes to GameStop any of those places. They are always so nice here and fun to talk to about games. What perked this review was when they just went so far. I went there the other day looking for a spring to fix my PS3 remote, one of the triggers. The nice shorter girl with Glasses (SORRY I DONT KNOW YOUR NAME) looked all over the place for me, even scoured the ground! Until she was all the way outside (in an extra storage place I assume) digging around! AND SHE FOUND ONE! Made my whole day and the rest of my Holiday , thanks again! The parking situation is not great here, and I came here and parked as best I could in the tiny parking lot. A younger Hispanic guy from the store with short hair came out and yelled something at me but I didn't understand what he was saying, so I moved my car a bit as that's what I assumed he was asking me to do. Then when walking towards the store, he comes out again and screams, "I SAID PARK PARALLEL TO THE WALL DUDE. C'MON." in a really rude manner. I was a new driver at the time so I understand I probably didn't park great, but I wasn't blocking anybody and the dude was so rude about it. I came inside anyways and asked if they had PS3 controllers. The dude shows me them and they're pretty expensive (saw a lot of cheaper options online) then he says "Y'know, you could just use PS4 controllers on PS3 anyways." I go, "Yeah, but it's kinda a hassle and the vibration function doesn't work when you do that." The dude laughs at me and goes "Uh, yeah it does." And looks at another employee nearby and goes "who the heck cares about that anyways?" and laughs again. Not only was he being rude/condescending but he wasn't even giving me correct information lol; I know that PS4 controllers will work but it functions a bit differently and doesn't vibrate when used on a PS3. A simple google search could tell you that. I dunno what this dude's problem was but I'm def not coming back here. The game prices were also, for the most part, equal to or higher THAN the prices at GameStop. I really wanted to support this non-chain video game store but I left feeling really pissed off and disappointed. read more

Been driving past the giant sign on Vermont on my late night rendezvous in Korea Town for Soju, late night tofu, and women of malcontent. The inner nerd in me kept reaching out to me to finally pull over and see what the store was all about. As my curiosity confirmed, World-8 is a Video Game shop and it brought me back to my grade school years using cheat routes to get to World 8 in Super Mario Bros. Its an awesome Video game store at that as well! In the shop are lounge chairs where you get the chance to kick back, try all the latest consoles such as XBOX One and PlayStation 4 with whatever new title you possibly wondered would be worth the $60 investment before your commitment. I love this concept, remember when Blockbuster Music was around and you could go and listen to new CDs before even buying them? Its kind of the same concept, but with video games. EVEN Cooler! Also, World 8 is a specialty store, besides having a number of major new titles; they specialize in vintage gaming as well. If there is a game that you are looking for and if they don't have it, they can possibly look for it as well. What really got me was all the Special Editions they had for different games. They had a range from arcade sticks to collectibles that you would only really find online. Also, besides the cool collectibles, there are various plush stuff toys and cool swag gear of your favorite video game characters. (I really hate the word swag.) I also saw signs for upcoming tournaments which range from Street Fighter, Marvel Vs Capcom, and Call of Duty. Forgot to ask if they did any for like FIFA or Madden. One thing I also like is that the staff are actual gamers themselves. So its ok to let your inner Game geek out, World-8 probably promotes it. The times I visited, Izzy and Adolfo have always been extremely helpful. I try my best to make it out to World-8 if there is a major new title I'd really like to get my hands on. I wish there were more hours in a day so that I can possible squeeze in more video game time. read more

What constitutes the greatest video game store in California? That is a question that will always change depending on who you ask. Is it the variety of games, the competitiveness of pricing, or just the hospitality of the employees? At the end of the day, Retro Video Game Stores are resell stores, so you can't expect every store to be the same, but this is one of the better ones. In terms of variety, they have it, to an extent. You won't find something like Strider 2 of the PS1, but they've got some rare titles. Also, while no one will ever beat the swap meet any day, the prices aren't too bad either. I mean, this is a business, but whenever you find something 50% what you found on eBay, it becomes a good day. You'll also end up buying too much as they just have so many that interests people. I think the coolest thing about this store is that it's not just a video game store. They sell merchandise related to video games such as board games, plushies, high-end figures, and you can even pre-order figures. If you love arcade sticks, look no further than their Arcade Corner where you can 100% customize your stick to your feel. On top of which, the staff is just awesome. Any store where you can talk for hours about video games without buying something is a good store. They are informed, knowledgable, and will help you with whatever you need. Honestly, my only place is location and size. Personally, I like the wooden boards, the hanging controllers, and small size of the store. It feels less like a store and more like a video game club. However, it definitely is very different and people might step in with the wrong foot. As well, won't like that the store is like 10 feet wide. It's a cool shack, and while I love it, it's different for some people. At the end of the day, I keep coming to this store every time I come to Los Angeles. I don't know if it's because it's close, the store has notoriety, or the fact that it's called World 8, but there's a charm to World 8. A certain magic fills the air that you just don't get anymore. Honestly, I'm surprised World 8 is still in business with how much it panders towards the customers.
