Visiting from California we were not ready for this. We stumbled upon a little Taste Of Heaven. A place that has not been modernized or gentrified. If it's possible to be authentic and traditional with donuts they nailed it. This classic place is a must see. You are now entering the Twilight Zone. The cash register looks like they bought it in the 1930's. And no, they weren't going for that vintage look. It's actually old and dated. With that said, bring cash. No electronic payment is taken whatsoever. Yes, it sucks because who has cash but you'll understand once you see the owners/employees. Don't worry though, cause errrrything here be cheap. We made out with 3 donuts for $1.99. Most of the donuts are around 60 cents with the specialty ones being a bit more. I better start writing reviews again before I forget about all of my recent-ish experiences! I've been wanting to try World's Fair Doughnuts for quite a while, so on a Saturday morning a few weeks (yes, a few WEEKS) ago, I decided to make the short drive over. The place is small, and it looks rather old on the outside, but don't let that fool you; this place is FULL of doughnuts! I'm normally not a fan of cake doughnuts, but these looked so appealing that I had to try them. I tried the apple cinnamon cake donut and the sour cream cake donut, as well as a chocolate long john, a cinnamon roll, and a regular glazed donut. Okay...so all of these donuts were sampled over the course of TWO visits, but wouldn't it be totally badass (read: fat) of me if I hoovered all of those in one go? In any event, the donuts were all delicious, and they were ridiculously cheap. Bring cash, because that's all they accept! 5 stars for the donuts, 5 stars for the prices, and 5 stars for the older lady behind the counter who complimented me on my "Bitches Be Trippin'" t-shirt. I often drive by WFD, so when I saw Steven B.'s Review of the Day, I thought "Why not try it out?" And so I did. I visited during the noon hour, and, when I walked in, there were two bakers in the background rolling out dough. In this age of mass-produced, trucked-in, frozen dough, it was refreshing to see real live bakers at work, especially in the middle of the day. The hardworking lady behind the counter handled my order quickly, and I felt like I should be paying more than a dollar and change to keep an operation like this going. But I stayed true to my limit, and enjoyed a blueberry-chip donut (since blueberries are full of healthy vitamins). And a buttermilk donut (because buttermilk contains certain key nutrients). First stop on the inaugural unofficial Yelp Event, the much anticipated Donut Crawl--World's Fair Doughnuts! World's Fair is an old shop run by old people. I'm not hating on its age or nuthin', just stating the facts, people. The woman working the counter refers to the baked goods inside their shop as "articles" (as in, "That's nine articles; three more for a dozen." Interesting. Coulda just said "doughnut," but whatevs. So. The Yelp gang (all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for our very first offline meeting) crowded into the sweet-smelling shop with all the other Saturday morning doughnut fiends and ogled the selection. Justin had decided prior to the crawl that he would sample cake doughnuts and cake doughnuts only. World's Fair, he said, was the best stop on the crawl. I wholeheartedly disagree, as my raspberry jelly-filled doughnut tasted at least (at LEAST) a day old and had a miserly portion of jelly. A sad disappointment of a doughnut, indeed. HOWEVER. Let it be known that World's Fair Doughnuts also offers fried pies. 'Member those Hostess fruit and pudding pies from back in the day? Okay, the first stop on our donut crawl was a bit disappointing. I sampled a glazed and a cake donut. The glazed was heavy and sort of dry (it was 9:15 in the am, so who knows when it was made.) The cake was crispy on the outside, and greasy. But O Holy God. The fried pies. Skip the donuts. Get a pie. On the whole, this place is pretty overrated. I was having a crazy sugar day and happened to drive by this place, which I've been meaning to check out for quite awhile. It was around noon on a Thursday and they weren't picked over, their shelves are still quite full! But I have to say that the only thing I was really drawn to was the apple fritter. I'm a big fan of supporting local business so I was surprised I hadn't been to World's Fair yet, especially with it being only 5 mins away from my house! I went here on a lovely sunday morning and was instantly charmed by the quaint appearance and a darling grandma who was cutting out doughnut circles as I walked in. It was around 10 in the morn so there may have been some doughnuts that were sold out already but they had my favorites- Sugar, glazed and chocolate glazed. The display was nice and the lady at the register even nicer! I thought she was joking when she said $1.82! How are they able to keep the prices so cheap?! They make dunkin donuts seem like a rip-off. Just don't ask to use credit card bc the minute you see their 1850's cash register you'll feel pretty dumb like I did. Anyways I had a sugar doughnut on my car ride to the library and it was incredible. Sugar crusted on the outside and delightfully fluffy on the inside. Moving on, three quick points on World's Fair Donuts are these: #1) This is a true 'mom n' pop' shop where the owners are on site as bakers, servers, and greeters; easily 70 years and happy to talk with anyone who will listen make it a point to give them a few minutes as you're bound to learn something. #2) The space is no frills and the donuts are dirt cheap. Raised and glazed, cake, Danish, Fritter, Chocolate or vanilla - and cash only, so be prepared. #3) The raised donuts are fine, but what you want is the cake donut and the fritter, the former dense and balanced with tangy buttermilk and sweet glaze while the later presents a crispy golden exterior and plenty of canned, but still delicious, cinnamon apples within; I only wish we'd have been in town another day so I could have tried one fresh out of the fryer. read more

Skip the donuts, get the cinnamon roll. Before we left St Louis, we decided to stop by World's fair doughnuts as it was recommended by Alton Brown. They're known for their cake doughnuts. I'm not really into doughnuts but gave it a whirl. We got there before 9 and most of the doughnuts were gone. I ended up with a blueberry. It was crumbly and sweet. It was ok. What really caught our eye was the cinnamon roll. It was big, plump, and delicious looking. The swirl was very circular too. We saved it for later on in the day and it was seriously yummy. Boy, can I say this place can't get any more local than what World's Fair Donuts really is. They've been in business for a solid 36 years. 1 year for the owner's father, and the other 35 are her and her husband's. They show up everyday to provide a wide selection of donuts, fritters, pies, and select drinks for decent prices. I know for fact I will be back. Holy Toledo! In anticipation of (and in training for) the upcoming crawl, I decided to scratch my donut itch and check out some of the Mom'n'Pops in South City. World's Fair was on my way home this morning, and I'd heard some good things. So I stopped. Again. Holy Toledo! This is as mom'n'pop as it gets. Mom (upswept hair, CAKED CAKED CAKED-on makeup in a weird color, maybe 70 years young) behind the counter, with Pop (also 70ish, wearing all white, white apron, cutting the dough on a stainless steel table) 10 feet behind her. CUTE. The woman at the counter is extremely friendly, and she winked at me coquettishly when she asked if I wanted her to make my coffee like she likes hers. I never did determine how she likes it, but I imagine it's sultry. Cheap! I bought six delicious glazed do-nuts (to use World's Fair's own spelling), a raspberry jelly do-nut, and a cup of coffee. Total? Four dollars. Four. I could have gotten a dozen glazed for five and change. And the donuts are fantastic! Next time I'm going to have to come earlier in the day, because the selection was a mite limited at 12pm on Sunday. Go! Go! read more

First I'd like to say I enjoyed this place in the past prior to the new ownership. Stopped by today for donuts and I wished they would have just shut down the business completely based on the available selections. This was a complete waste of my time and money. The abrupt beehived service is almost one of the best parts about coming here. Love, love, love this place; we take all of our out of town visitors. World's Fair Doughnuts can be pretty easily summed up like this: adorable older couple making tons of doughnuts, loads of delicious options, and you can get breakfast for two (including drinks!) for less than four dollars. Awesome. Don't go looking here for frills or fancy pants anything. It's straight forward we-know-what-we're-doing doughnuts and pastries. That's what you go for and that's what you get, all for super cheap with a smile. I went in once and when the lady behind the counter saw the gentleman in front of me she immediately started getting his order without any exchange of what he wanted - just asked how he was doing, how his wife was, and that they missed him the week before. The chocolate iced long john was a head above the competition and the fruit pies, oh, the fruit pies. I love pie. I love fruit pie. Deep-fried, Texas style fruit pies, homemade with ample filling. Absolutely wonderful. There's nothing fancy about this place, but it is run by people who know donuts. Incredibly good donuts - the plain cake donuts is one of the best things, donut or otherwise, I I have ever eaten. I had a bite of a yeast donut, which was still very good. But the cake donuts, that is what these people do best. The cake donuts have a very rich, yellow-ish interior that I assume must be a result of using more eggs or butter or something. Finally made it to worlds fair donuts, (5 am) to be sure they had the case full. All of the donuts looked impeccable. I did notice that they were the typical flavors on my visit, no shredded coconut topped or any sort of sprinkle topped, but that's ok. I got cherry, apple, blueberry pies, 2 buttermilk, 2 chocolate creme filled, & glazed twist. Buttermilk is very moist & fresh, excellent. The blueberry pie was a nice surprise, crust thick yet soft & filled to the Max. Pies are my favorite. This is my favorite donut place so far. Especially it being so cheap! 8 items , 7$. I have found that a pre-dinner doughnut from World's Fair is just the right amount of sugar buzz to finish the drive home from work. (Granted, from there I'm only a few blocks away. But god knows what would happen in that few blocks without proper fried dough nourishment.). Some of my favorite donuts and fruit pies in the city. This place brings back many memories from my early grad school days. After spending time in a number of other Midwest cities I have to say that St. Louis has the best donuts, and World's Fair is among the top 2 or 3 in the city. Everywhere I go I look for a place that has comparable donuts. If I am lucky I can find 2 or 3 varieties that can compete - but never a whole selection. Apple fritters, long johns, eclair, fruit pie - all good choices, just make sure you bring cash, cash, cash. It could be because I love the taste of a fresh doughnut right off the rack or it could be because I enjoy the smell of a doughnut shop, or it could be because I just simply have a passionate love affair with doughnuts.
