now *this* is great okonomiyaki…read more coming from seattle and very recently having a disastrous experience at the only okonomiyaki spot in our area (you can read my past reviews for that), my two friends, my partner, and i were looking forward to having great okonomiyaki. thankfully, gaijin delivered! we came by on a friday night, and it was fairly busy. we wouldn't have been surprised if we were turned away since we didn't have a reservation. they ended up making space for us thankfully and we didn't even have to wait long at all. the inside of the place isn't that big, but it's not so tiny that it's cramped. when you sit down, if you are in a large enough party, you sit down in front of a flat stovetop to keep your okonomiyaki warm when the waiter brings it out to you. we started with some drinks. they were all very good - next time i'm trying that espresso goma-tini! i did get a lychee martini though, and it was a little strong of a pour but i still really enjoyed it. onto the okonomiyaki. we all ordered different ones so we could try them. every single one of them were delicious. i got the tofu osaka-style, my partner got the beef osaka-style, one of my friends got the fried shrimp osaka-style, and my other friend got the traditional hiroshima-style. each okonomiyaki is prepared perfectly, not too thick and not overly saucy (so it doesn't get soggy). the flavours are quite rich but also really nicely umami. sometimes, too rich of a sauce kind of overwhelms me, but the ratios are well-balanced. overall, truly recommend this place. probably some of the best okonomiyaki i've had. next time i'm in chicago, i'd love to go again. there's so many options to choose from and i want to try them all!

The pandan coconut mochi donut holes I chose were probably the highlight. They were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and there was ample sauce for dipping. I think some people would find the service top notch here--constantly checking in on me and keeping water refilled. I guess that came with a cost: 3% service charge automatically applied, and the server proactively brought over a digital payment system, so the 18% tip I selected calculated off the total leading to what was essentially a tip of 23%.

Then wiped his fingers on a dirty rag and proceeded to finish making the bowls. A short time later, we were served that same bowl of ramen. Watching an employee use their bare hands and mouth on food that was then served to a customer was extremely concerning and completely unacceptable from a food safety and hygiene standpoint. It ruined the experience and made us lose confidence in the restaurant's food handling practices. I hope management takes this seriously, retrains their staff on proper food safety procedures, and ensures this doesn't happen to anyone else.

The crispy chili cauliflower was sweet and actually tasted a bit like orange chicken- we demolished it and this may have been my favorite dish of the whole night! Finally, we had the mentaiko kimchi udon, steak kalbi, and ordered one of their burgers on the side because why not. We agreed that the bonito flakes on the udon covered up the kimchi flavor a bit and wished it was stronger, but I liked the creaminess of the sauce. The steak kalbi had a great flavor and sauce, but I do think it could've been more tender. The burger was as good as it looked and indeed one of the best I've had in Chicago. I loved the balance between sweet and savory, and all of the flavors were balanced very well. We ended the meal with the seasonal dessert, which was sticky rice with strawberries and fermented rice. I thought it made for a refreshing end, but we agreed that it would've been even better served cold rather than hot. Overall, this was a very fun and great experience with delicious food! A few things about Wow Bao really stood out to me on my first visit. To begin, they make ordering easier than ever. They have a means of ordering that is similar to a self check in at the airport. There are two machines conveniently located right outside where a line forms that electronically takes your order and payment. There wasn't a line when I was there but I figured I'd give the machine a go. Worked great. Food was ready in less than 5 minutes and was delicious. A lot of tables to eat at, they have the free water cups ready to go, and their staff is friendly. I would recommend this location. read more

I have to admit, I induldge in hot asian buns sometimes twice a week ! Being a cash strapped grad student, I can have a reasonably priced lunch there. I love doughy, spicy things, so I get it all wrapped up in a cute dumpling. My favorite is the Thai chicken bao. These are not quite like the bao's you will find in China, so don't expect that, although the set up of Wow Bao and the white unis remind me of a place in old Shanghai where I have enjoyed traditional dumplings. More than just "Hot Asian Buns," Wow Bao is my top choice to grab lunch on my way to class due to its fresh ingredients and speedy service, all at affordable prices. My fave baos are the spicy mongolian beef and coconut custard, and the teriyaki chicken rice bowls powered me through my winter semester. Better yet, they also have Thai Iced Coffee! I'm sad that summer's over, but with the school year comes more Wow Bao, which is something to look forward to. read more

Beware!!! Do not order online... I ordered at 8pm and they close at 9pm... Waited for my order and nothing... I called at 9:30pm and the woman told me that she was sorry but we are closed. I will refund you and send you out a free meal tomorrow. The next day the manager called me and said you place the order outside of our delivery hours so your order can be delivered today. Went in this place out of desperation. Will never go back. Employees were just screwing with each other, no guidance about anything at all. My sad little soggy bun thing was unsatisfying. They were blasting nasty rap music in there, it was off-putting. Some of us like music that has soul and heart, and is about something. Hot Asian Buns. I'm going to admit that I don't really like all the bao there. However, the teriyaki, bbq, curry, and coconut are all pretty delicious. I also recommend getting the pad thai salad. There's pad thai noodles, lettuce, red onions and red bell peppers. The sauce for it is also really good. You also can't go wrong with the Green Tea Ginger Ale. I can't imagine they are too good for you, though - I stopped at 4. The salad was okay. having bao here is: cheap quick friendly service now when you eat the steamed buns, it is like seeing a beautiful home and going inside only to find out the interior is just bad taste. the same is true for the bao, just delicious outer shell but the ingredients inside leave much to be desired, and even with such a low price it is all a bit underwhelming. read more

I've never seen turnip in any other form than this. Japanese salt & pepper tofu: My FAVORITE dish ever. Any fried salt & pepper tofu always makes me happy. They use a creamy egg-like tofu and the outside is lightly crispy with amazing aromatics stir fried in. Steamed white rice on the side is perfect with this. Loved everything else my dinner buds picked and we were super full by the end! It was a very quaint but contemporarily designed space with neutral tones. The staff was very friendly, and we were seated immediately having beat the work crowd. For drinks, I had the Take It Easy, and my friend had the Purple Paradise. I usually go straight for wine but opted for a mixed drink this time. Both of our drinks were great choices. For dinner, we each tried something different and opted for the spring rolls appetizer, the King Mushroom Chicken, Singapore Vermicelli Noodle and Spicy Chili Shrimp with a side of fried rice. Everyone loved their meals. They were absolutely delicious! I had the vermicelli dish, and I couldn't have asked for a better mix of ingredients. It was a little spicy but not too much. I hate half the bowl at the establishment and packed up the rest to enjoy later. This meal was very filling and a half portion held me over until I got home 8plus hours later. It was a great midnight snack and SO delicious, I stopped again a few days later to order another one. Really, each day I go to work, I have to force myself to not make a pit stop to grab an order because actually I get free food at work and it would be fiscally irresponsible to get it as often as I want.
