We came at lunchtime so asked for the lunch menu, but reading through the reviews, it seems like we should've gone with the dinner menu if we wanted sashimi. The food was as generally good, but we didn't care for the chicken fried rice. We expected fried rice with veggies and egg, but got rice that was doused in soy sauce and fried. Not the best, but we ate it because we didn't want to be charged. The sunrise roll was pretty good but the snapper on top wasn't the best cut of fish which meant there were some chewy bits and part of it tasted odd. The real stand out items were the tempura veggies, tempura chicken, beef teriyaki, and salmon cucumber roll. The plum mule was the best cocktail we tried, but the cocktails were generally good. The dessert mochi was a solid way to finish the meal. $5 per two piece order or free if you pay cash.

Our server was excellent, very friendly and answered all of our questions. The food, however, was quite disappointing. The sashimi was good and our daughter definitely ate our money's worth of the sweet egg (tomago). My husband also enjoyed the shumai. But the salmon skin roll was tough instead of crispy and the spider roll was mushy. The shrimp tempura was bland and the sweet potato tempura was cut so thin that it was practically a chip. Given the price of their all-you-can-eat option, we would not recommend eating here.

However, I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised with everything we had. The National Dish of Denmark (stegt flæsk) was incredible, the dumplings were jam packed with meat, and the Chinese Churros hit the spot. We came in about 50 minutes before closing and stayed long after, but the service was fantastic the whole time. We were thanked by the owner for coming in and were told that staying late was expected and well welcomed. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and the music was a lot of fun. The restaurant faces the shore, so expect lovely views, especially around the golden hour. Overall, this place is an absolute gem. It's worth the trip from Boston or anywhere within a 50 mile radius, honestly.

Nothing felt gimmicky, everything was thoughtfully prepared. The ambiance is outstanding. Walking in, it felt like one of the better spots I've dined in Boston proper or New York. The space has real character. Our server Lou was exceptional. First-timers at a tapas-style restaurant, and he made sure we understood the portions, guided us through choices we weren't sure about, and kept us from over-ordering. That level of attentiveness makes a difference. The food was outstanding. The broccoli alone (yes, broccoli) was a standout. The ahi tuna and rice cake were equally impressive. My martini was perfectly executed. The owner came by, introduced himself, and actually spent time with each table. That kind of engagement from ownership tells you everything about the place's standards. I'm already planning my return to work through the rest of the menu. Whether it's a full dinner or just drinks and a snack, Njord Haven is worth the trip.
