After a whole day at Death Valley when we were almost passing out from hunger we found this place and had their Thanksgiving buffet. It was okay! The ham double he juicier and turkey could have been tender. The stuffing was okay too, could have been better. Was very disappointed with the beans. The pies were sickeningly sweet. They wee very busy that day but surprised us with their nice service. Hence, the three stars. Nice, clean place and okay good in the middle of a dessert. Not bad! At night, the Wrangler Steakhouse is the place to be while at Furnace Creek. There's an electricity around there given the intense darkness as you drive further away from that parking lot at night. Inside is cool, with a dim rustic interior. The perfect environment to have dinner in after a long day of traveling about Death Valley Nat'l Park. For around $40-45, you'll enjoy decent barbeque with a salad bar option and a beer. They had Newcastle (I pronounce it "newguzzle") on tap so I was very pleased. There are lots of foreign tourists that come to Death Valley so there is even a sort of international vibe being at Wranglers and Furnace Creek Ranch (this shopping hub area). The salad was satisfactory. The vegetables hit the spot. And although the barbeque was pretty good, the sauce was too sweet and not spicy enough. Still, I had fun here. I do not see what everyone likes about this place! I was horrified by it! This is one of the worst places I have ever eaten! Okay, enough with the exclamation points!!! So, we went here for lunch and first of all let me say... there were tour buses everywhere and this places was packed! I personally did not wanna deal with all those people but it was one of the few places to eat in this tiny 'town'... and nothing for miles and miles so we stayed. Aside from the salad bar, all they had was a small buffet with 3 items! We assumed they would have steak... after all it is called Wrangler STEAKhouse. The staff was rude. The food was horrible. They had 2 kinds of pasta and some weird 'sweet and sour' type chicken chunks. The place was dark and very loud from all the tourists. The price was ridiculous! It was around $60 for 3 people for lunch and that may have been okay if they had more food but NOT for their tiny options. I will never go to this place again. Rode my bike from Furnace Creek to Bad-water and back with a side trip along the artists drive. 42 miles and over 2000' elevation gain. I'm only telling you because that totally justified coming here and only having desert. Had molten chocolate cake with ice cream. It so hot the spot. Also had some of the cheesecake which was equally decadent. While I'm stuffed now, I'm content that I could eat the deserts and not feel too guilty. read more

Two stars if I'm being generous. Too dark dining area - perhaps so you can't see your food clearly? I heard the servers drop food or dishes at least twice while we were there. Probably one of the most overpriced meals for mediocre-at-best food. I ordered the salmon that came with rice and green beans. All of it tasted like something I could make at home in a hurry. Like every restaurant, my credit card slip had a tip line which I couldn't leave blank of course therefore I left a tip however I am not sure what for as our waitress did nothing except helicopters over our table. The manager that "sat" us was friendly and courteous. We looked over the buffet before buying. Brisket in gravy, pork loin, scalloped potatoes, pasta. Small salad bar, smaller dessert bar. I noticed the beef was low, I asked the manager if refills were imminent, he assured me they were. Back at the table, I noticed my beef (from the tray which had just been refilled) was cold. Not "room temperature" cold, but refrigerator cold. Putting food from the fridge directly into a steam tray is definitely a food-service no-no. I mentioned to the manager that the beef was still refrigerator cold. I then watched as the food-service professional he dispatched to survey the issue reached into the tray, fondled a few pieces of beef with his fingers and loudly declared, "No, it's hot!" Now, I'm not saying that calibrated temperature-sensing fingers don't exist, but if they do, they are so rare that health departments nation-wide require restaurants to use thermometers to verify food is kept above a safe 160F. They also require food preparers to pre-heat food to at least 160F before adding it to the steam tray. While steam trays can keep food hot, They don't have the "oomph" to heat food quickly (and thus safely) enough to a safe temperature. If I hadn't just eaten a piece of that beef, I might be inclined -- just like the manager -- to just take his word for it. (A good manager would have verified the issue himself after a customer complaint and not relied on the party likely responsible for the screwup to admit his error.) If you are like me, you'll avoid this place, as food safety issues are like... well, let's say that if you see one, there are likely many more. True, good food is hard to find in the middle of a desert. But keep in mind that while being hungry in the desert is bad, having food poisoning in the desert is definitely worse. read more

We have been here many times over the years, including just recently, and I am shocked to discover I haven't reviewed it yet so here it is. We first ate here in 2006 and have eaten here at least once each of the several times we've stayed in Death Valley, up until now, with this year's visit probably being the last time we'll bother with this place. Originally, I would have given it a solid 3 stars on the strength of the hardly outstanding but still enjoyable large prime rib dinner they used to have, complete with salad bar, potato, etc., and despite some drawbacks. The prime rib is now gone and all the drawbacks are worse, making this place barely worthy of 2 stars when considering the very high prices. Getting into the current status, the prices are very high. We have always been somewhat ok with this given that it's in the middle of Death Valley, there is nothing else for miles and miles, and it could still be an enjoyable, relaxing part of the whole Furnace Creek stay. That said, the place must be considered with the high prices in mind. Without the prime rib, high-priced as it was but large and fairly enjoyable, they now have only steaks, pasta, the salad bar. The salad bar is mediocre, never great but at least decent enough to accompany a fairly good prime rib dinner. The steaks are mediocre, too, and certainly not even remotely worth the high price, a bit tough and characterless. The pasta dishes are absolutely abysmal, not worth eating even at half the price. Various family members have tried these a couple times over the visits. In the past, they were barely mediocre, heavy-handed with dull creamy sauces, always a poor choice when the prime rib was to be had. The most recent was even worse, negative stars on its own, a seafood linguine which was dry old pasta with some shrimp and barely any characterless sauce, a bad joke of a pasta dish and barely edible. The high price made it absurd. The cocktails used to be mediocre but we have not had them in years. They have a nice local pale ale that is pretty good. The place itself is a bit bleak and functional inside. It's only at all pleasant if in one of the booths. The tables put you right in the middle of the stark surrounding, lighting that is not so much dim as dreary, blank, dingy-looking walls and industrial-looking doors with unsightly service equipment in full view. read more

When we go to Death Valley we like to ride the motorcycles down to Furnace Creek to have a nice steak dinner. Yes, it is expensive but you have to remember where you are. I was delightfully surprised by this Death Valley steak house. Much better dinner fare and atmosphere than its neighboring 49er Cafe in Furnace Creek Ranch. I had an absolutely fantastic cut of ribeye here, cooked a little more than medium rare I requested, but the quality of the aged meat nonetheless was outstanding. I would recommend ordering one of the potato options (baked or steak fries) for your starch accompaniment as somebody goes a bit crazy on the saffron with the rice. My dining companions had a sirloin and vegetable corn tamale cakes, which were equally delicious and tastefully presented and portioned. Despite the fact that it's a steak house at heart, vegetarians need not feel abandoned here -- you'll have at least 2 (perhaps 3) delicious choices for dinner. It's modest compare to buffet in Vegas if you just came from there ;). But it's descent and the price is reasonable for about $15 pp and you can't find many place for lunch in the Death Valley. We were in the connecting saloon the next day and I walked through to the restaurant to ask if I could borrow a plate for the pizza I was eating. Ok, to be fair, we were here at 11:30 on the Saturday of a wildflower Super Bloom that was overwhelming the systems everywhere in and around the park. All the restaurants were packed, and many were running out of some stuff. All of the hotels were fully booked. The roads were crowded. SO not your normal February Saturday for Death Valley. STILL....... When we arrived, one of the two dining areas didn't have a SINGLE table available, and not because there were diners lingering, but because NOT ONE table had been bussed of dirty plates, and a few of the tables were stacked high with plates that I'm guessing guests moved off tables so that they could eat. The other dining room had a few tables in the same state, but for the most part, dirty dishes had been cleared. Tables and benches, however had not been wiped clean. We were starving, and decided to bite the bullet and pay for 3 adult (my and hubby and 14 year old son) and 1 child (12 year old daughter) -- a whopping $64 -- for this buffet. OK. Take a deep breath. How bad could this be. Uhhhh. Inedible actually. There were no forks at the buffet. I asked the only person on the floor, the receptionist charged with taking payment from the line of hungry park visitors with no other options (none of the other restaurants opened until later or were under renovation, outside the park you had an hour drive to the first services) if she could get forks. No, she can't leave her station. I asked where I could go to get forks, and she said that's the busser's job. So, I poked into a back room and found a busser, and he told me there were still forks at the salad bar (separate from the hot buffet.) So, my family grabbed the last 4 of 6 forks. I took "chipotle chicken" and my husband took "pork chop with mushroom gravy" . Except for the mushrooms, they looked identical. And they were both inedible. Couldn't get a fork in them to hold them still to saw at their dehydrated, almost jerky-like, consistency. When I did succeed in tearing a piece away, I could not chew it at all. There was no hint of chipotle. Just a generic, no doubt boxed, canned, or packaged brown sauce which in no way provided enough hydration to swallow the leathery bit of meat. So I tried the chafer of plain pasta, and stood indecisively over the choices of thick congealed alfredo, pesto sauce which looked just like the alfredo but with green specks, or the unoffensive looking tomato sauce. I chose the tomato. Some of the pasta was edible. Other pieces had become crispy and dry in their heated dish. The tomato sauce isn't the worst I've tasted, but, yeah, I've tasted some awful tomato sauce. I just didn't want to eat this. The only other hot choices were instant rice and unseasoned heated frozen corn. SO I tried the salad bar. Not bad. 3 choices of greens: romaine, mixed lettuces, spinach. Canned beets, chickpeas, kidney beans. Sliced cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. Chopped onions, bagged croutons. Either ranch, caesar or vinaigrette. And a pasta salad with the leftover crap pasta from earlier services, and soup from the crap leftover rice, dried out meats and unseasoned corn. SO, I got a salad for $16.95. The drinks though: the iced tea was empty. When you pressed the button to get some lemonade, a "low water pressure: light came on and no liquid came out. The other sodas were terribly flat and watered down, and no ice came from the ice dispenser. When I expressed my dissatisfaction to the lone cashier, she meekly said, "I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do about it" and I believe that's true. I asked to speak to a manager, and she said "I wish there was a manager here to talk to". As we were leaving we saw her talking to someone from the back of the house, pointing out politely, that there were no utensils, and if they couldn't wash them fast enough they would have to put out plastic. The obnoxious dude from the back of the house huffed at her "you can't tell me what to do. You are not the boss of me. You don't get to say what I should do." We couldn't get out of that dark dump fast enough. Overpriced for what it is. I had the bacon wrapped figs and while the flavor was there the execution was not. Bacon burnt and overpowering Gorgonzola. The garnish was also wilted. My mom got the chili and it was all beans and barely any meat. Service was great but for a resort, this place should get a make over. read more

Camped at a nearby campground with no services and so had low expectations about finding a place to eat breakfast. We were surprised to find this place with a breakfast buffet. Greeted by a very friendly gentleman at the door who explained the different buffet stations and the cost per person (only $12.12). The food was very respectable given the location and the fact that it was a breakfast buffet. There was another gentleman there keeping the coffee urns filled and busing tables who was also very friendly. The decor and furnishings are dated and overall somewhat dark inside but we figured that is because of the hot sun. Minimal selections, staff was unfriendly, even for the low price of $15 I still felt ripped off. Dirty plates sat all over the buffet lines, if you didn't have to pay prior to entering I would have left immediately. The food on this buffet was absolutely awful. There were only a few hot choices, and what was there had either no flavor or was swimming in grease. There was a dessert bar, which consisted of hard cookies and hot cobbler - which you could top with what turned out to be soupy whipped cream from a can. The only decent food in this place was the salad. The staff was underwhelming and not helpful. They ran out of iced tea at the beverage station, and though they were told multiple times by different people (I was paying attention), they made no move to make more. Also, they ran out of ice while we were there and made no move to refill that either....even when it was 110 degrees outside and people obviously needed cold drinks. Lastly, the buffet for adults at lunch is $14.95. The food isn't good enough to eat that much food, much less $14.95 worth. I try to get to Death Valley every other year for a four wheel excursion. It's been four years this time. I remember the last time getting a decent steak at the Wrangler Steakhouse before so I planned on eating there once this trip. They are now known as "Wrangler Buffet" on the large marquee and "Wrangler Dinner House" on the smaller menu sign at the door. They should call themselves "Wrangle Your Money." It appears they are trying to cater to a European clientele who come to visit the National Parks. Strangely enough, a majority of the business is repeat customers who visit because it is a close place to camp, explore, ride motorcycles or just relax. They only offer one steak, yes just one, and a fillet mignon. THAT'S ALL THE BEEF ON THE MENU. For $60 you get a 16 oz tomahawk ribeye steak, the most expensive item on the menu. For those of you who don't know what a tomahawk steak is, it's a bone in ribeye with an extra 12 inches of rib bone sticking out for presentation only. For an extra $4 you can add soup and salad. Beverages are mid-priced. Let's start with the good. The waiter, up to a point, the hostess and the busman. The salad bar was clean with crisp lettuce and a small variety of vegetables and toppings. I didn't have the soup nor did I look at it; however, there were only two types. The blue cheese dressing was chunky and flavorful. The butter in the wrappers was good. Now the meal. The steak came with seasonal vegetables, four pieces of asparagus. It also came with "potatoes au gratin." Actually it was strong onion casserole with a few potatoes in it. Definitely it was not "au gratin." Maybe the chef doesn't know what "au gratin" means. The steak was THE WORST STEAK I HAVE EVER HAD AT A RESTAURANT. EVER, YES EVER. I ordered it rare, my son ordered his medium. Mine was medium as was his. The taste was atrocious. The cook used wood chips to give a smokey flavor. All he succeeded in doing was getting so much wood oils on the beef that it didn't even taste like beef. Also, they used a restaurant "B" grade of beef. Sinewy, tough and close to half fat. Definitely it wasn't even select. For $60 it should have been at least choice. The reason I said the waiter was good to a point was that after the meal was served he never came back to check on it. After we had finished what we were going to force down (I was hungry) he admitted that the steak is bad there. He should have told us that at the beginning. I trimmed nearly all the meat off both bones, cut off the gristle and fat and then took the equivalent of one average steak back to camp. The next day I smothered it with A1 and barbeque sauce just to not waste my food. I still tasted the wood oil later that day on a couple of occasions when I belched. I never put sauce on good beef. The third person in our party had the half chicken. His vegetables were also available in the salad bar. They were good. The chicken was too dry to eat, way over cooked. The beans that came instead of potatoes were closer to refried beans and not a more solid camp type bean. They were not palatable. I ate better paste in kindergarten when I was young. That meal too went back to camp, only to get thrown away. $34 in the trash. I don't think starving children in Africa would have chewed on that chicken. The waiter did bring the manager to the table to get my input. I didn't want the bill adjusted but he insisted as he said it would give some ammunition to show the bill adjustment to the chef. Ok, he took $60 off. It was still $163 for two sodas, one steak meal, one chicken meal, two salads, an expensive bottle of 2012 Woodbridge Merlot and tax. Save your money. Save your palate. The only thing that might be good there is the all-you-can-eat soup and salad for $15. read more

The price, $11.25 per person was better than expected. The food selection, while not extensive, was fine. There was good selection of hot food, from two kind of scrambled eggs to very good French Toast. The cold line has lots of fruit along with yogurt, cold cereal plus a hot cereal. Classic National Park Service captive audience dining at its finest. It's a steakhouse, so don't bother with anything that didn't walk on four legs at one time. If you are big on beef/pork/lamb, you'll be a relatively happy camper (or lodger), as they are pretty adept at steaks and bbq. The wine list is decidedly grim, both in selection and price. All things considered (location, other options, price) we were happy with our breakfast buffet here. They have a choice of eggs, bacon, french toast, sausage, fresh fruit, and among other things an omelet bar. The price was 11.25 so we were happy to give it a try. If you consider the fact there is no where else to eat within 20 miles, they could easily charge much much more and/or have a low quality of food. The bacon was crisp and fresh, the eggs were good, and there are plenty of beverages to choose from. We would recommend this if you are there and want a good breakfast at a good price. read more

Had dinner there while visiting Death Valley earlier this month. The most disappointing steak I've ever had. I was there with a group of 40 people and dinner was pre-arranged. The waitress asked how I like my steak. I told her that I liked it charred on the outside (blackened) and rare on the inside. When my steak arrived, it was almost raw and cold inside and out. Others at the table received their steaks with a nice char on the outside. I would have been happy with that. I asked the waitress to have my steak "seared on the outside" to blacken it. She took the steak away and I waited 15 minutes before asking the waitress where my steak was. She went back to the kitchen and brought back the same raw steak with no char at all on the outside. I asked her what was so difficult about searing a steak to blacken it. She said she thought the cook didn't know what that meant and saw him put my steak in a frying pan to cook it. I told her that I would have been happy with any of the steaks delivered to others at the table that had char on them. She really didn't respond but rather, had a deer in the headlights look on her face. Rather than wait another 15 minutes for another feeble attempt to cook a steak, I accepted the steak but no accommodation was made by the waitress and no management personnel was visible. For the cost of their meals, they should be doing a lot better than that. They need some competition in this remote area to make them improve or close. read more

Very friendly staff despite challenging circumstances (it was 120F today with power outages). That earned the stars. The food was very disappointing, even the bread was old. I would have understood if it was $7-9 or so, but at $27pp it is a rip-off. Future customers, be warned. read more

Ate here for breakfast. I guess because they are so isolated, they don't feel like they need to put any effort into their service or their food. Bacon was almost raw. French toast was hard. Biscuits were also hard & dry. If someone chooses to be in the food service industry, they should try to do their best rather than just get by. Pretty crazy to stop for lunch in the middle of the desert. Probably wouldn't have stopped here if it wasn't for the entire tour group being forced to meet up there. The buffet was pretty tasty and had a decent selection, but the dining room left something to be desired. What do you expect in death valley? read more

It's a buffet. Hard to mess up; you just have to price it decently, and have the food be varied and fresh. We were here for breakfast, and they got that all down right. A lot of the fruit was canned rather than fresh, but at least they had a wide variety of that as well as other things. Both my picky wife and I found plenty we were happy with here. read more
