The five stars are for the milkshakes. Just the milkshakes. Everything else we had was fine, nothing to write home about, but I'm going to dream about the milkshakes. Onion rings were alright, Reuben was pretty good but nothing special, and the special beef sub was an off brand Philly cheesesteak. Probably should have gotten burgers but we weren't feeling them. However. We're not here to talk about all of that. We're here for the milkshakes. The extra thick malted butterscotch was unique and fabulous, but the extra thick chocolate malt is going to haunt my dreams for years. It was the best milkshake I've ever had in my life. My family and I took a step back in time and enjoyed a fantastic experience at this drive-in restaurant. The atmosphere is set by carefully arranged 1950's relics (my son was enamored by the juke box) and by ordering our food via a landline phone at our table. The food itself was great, and the prices also felt like they were from a time in the distant past. Seriously, the burgers here are cheaper than most modern fast food chains. We stopped here and had the burger baskets. First off the fries weren't fresh cut just frozen. Hamburgers were just average. I was expecting steak burgers the way everyone was ranting about them. Boy did we have high hopes for this place! I have to say that our first visit was hit and miss. - Footlong hotdog: it really is a footlong, and the sauerkraut and slaw were definitely a nice addition, although I was hoping for a bit more slaw as I barely tasted it, let alone see it. Soft buns and your choice of chopped or fried onions. 4/5 - Onion rings: this seems to be a fave among customers, so of course we had to try it! I liked that they're not frozen onions, and the coating is not overpoweringly thick. Nice to try, but they could have had more of a crisp. 4/5 - French fries: unevenly cooked as some were undercooked, these lost steam quickly. I could've done without these. 2.5/5 - Chocolate malt milkshake: this was a surprising winner! The thick, creamy shake had a nice deep malt flavour, and it was even better to drink after we finished eating. 5/5 Service was friendly although food didn't come out too quickly, and the old-timey decor was charming. Enough seating inside and outside, and there was even parking spaces where you can 'park and eat.' I typically go to Wrights for the desserts. Today, I went for lunch and will not return. I was waiting for to go and a man, who I assume was the owner or manager (elderly man with Dairy Rite jacket) was near the register so everyone had to walk past him. He had on no mask and was scooping ice with no gloves on. Another employee approached him (also not wearing a mask inside) scarfing down an ice cream cone and changing the trash. I can only assume she came from the kitchen, a cook. I witnessed all this while waiting outside and did not want to even stay, but I knew they started my order. I paid to support local business, but could not eat the food or feed to my child as I don't trust a safe preparation. If only people would take the virus seriously...I mean the dude at the door without a mask was in everyone's path who entered the place, so he's really at risk. I don't get it. read more

If you're someone who wants to eat local when you visit Staunton, this is it. It's an authentic drive in restaurant like your parents and grandparents visited when they learned to drive. The food is very good, a little pricey but you're partially paying for the experience. There's nothing bad on the menu. They're a little slow, but mainly because it is usually very busy. If you're in town or passing through try to go in the evenings during the summer. You'll see some cool cars and go back to the golden era of automobiles. Really enjoyed our lunch here for the decor and ham sandwich. A few things I wanted to bring to the Yelp-verse: This is not a "gourmet" burger place or a Five Guys, so don't measure this food the same way. It's an old fashioned drive through, so don't expect a Gruyere burger and fresh cut fries (the fries and onion rings were the frozen kind, but still good). I ordered a small plain hamburger and it was definitely underwhelming- grayish and looked boiled. The larger hamburgers definitely benefit from toppings. That being said, this was the best ham sandwich I've ever had. So much juicy ham that I couldn't finish the whole thing! It all tasted fresh and back to basics - a classic sandwich. Also, the butterscotch millshake was out of this world. Not a flavor you see very often, so it was a real treat. (Actually, it was my fiancé's milkshake and he was slightly annoyed at how many sips I kept stealing!) COVID-19 protocols: here's the biggest area for improvement. We ate in, and while the staff is masked and the tables are socially distanced, you place your order via a phone within your booth. I have to admit I was skeeved out by having to use the phone because I never saw them sanitized. It's a cute gimmick for the retro experience, but I would recommend they consider having waitstaff (who deliver the food masked) take orders until the pandemic is over. read more

This is the first time that I've been at a place like this, and it was alright! The 1959's style drive-up curb service rocked! They even had outdoor music that featured Elvis and other classic rock tunes. I ordered a tuna sandwich with provolone cheese, a side of potato salad, and and a medium tea which came to $10.00. I ordered right there from my car window, and the food was delivered in about five minutes. The tuna sandwich on rye bread tasted fine, as did the potato salad.
