My wife and I came here after making reservations for a special occasion. We were looking for an upscale steakhouse experience and had high hopes but we're unfortunately disappointed in the dinner and service we received. Waiter was MIA. We waited with empty water glasses and the wine arrived 3/4 through the meal. I ordered the NY cut medium and it was cooked to order (two stars earned), the quality of the steak was sub par however in my experience. Also ordered a baked potato "loaded " and a Cesar salad.... I've seen better BPs at Wendy's and was under cooked and the salad was meh; even for a Cesar. Generally an underwhelming experience for us both. Especially for paying $$$. Quality control needs an overhaul IMO. read more

On this dinner of special occasion, the restaurant staff went above and beyond our expectations. The service was impeccable. Efficient, friendly and comprehensive. Pikake's attention to detail was superb and deeply appreciated. The food was excellent. The steak cooked to perfection. The seafood tender and succulent. If you are wanting an amazing steak this is not the place. Steak was cold chewy and filet was dry. If they say comparable to wagu they are kidding theirselves. I am not saying the entire meal was horrible just not to the standards I would hold a 45 and up steak to cost. More seasoning on steak. Bread should of had something rememberable like maybe a garlic salt. Shrimp just grilled would of been perfect. Potatoes I would of had the baked with sea salt and butter. So if you want an average dinner with a higher price tag than Texas Roadhouse just go to Texas Roadhouse. read more

We ate breakfast here during our stay, and it's definitely better than your average hotel restaurant. I ordered the salmon eggs Benedict, and they were really good! The egg was poached to perfection and the mustard seed hollandaise had a nice bite that was really unique. A good experience! read more

Hi Sue, I am visiting from Nevada. I came to Hilo to celebrate the New Year's with my Ohana (I was actually born and raised in Hawaii). I heard good things about WSW so I had my sister Dawn make reservations about a week ago for 27 of us at 8:30 a.m. on January 2. On the morning of January 2 she received an email saying the reservation was cancelled. She called the restaurant immediately and was told that they had double booked and we still have our reservation. WSW-Yes, we did notice a double booking and had to cancel 1 of them. Upon arriving at the restaurant at 8:30, we were shown 4 separate groups of tables. The disappointment started from there. We should have been told that we couldn't get one long table. I'm sure we could have gotten 2 tables. We did see a long set of tables near the back wall. Anyway, this is the first disappointment. When we left we noticed the long set of tables near the back wall was EMPTY. WSW-Unfortunately, this is the set up in our dining room, which consist of only 1 table in the far back that seat 12 and was reserved prior to Dawn's booking. We seat big groups in 1 area to keep the group close together. This information was given to Dawn by our banquet coordinator upon inquiry & booking. By booking a private room, you could choose the setup. We do our best to accommodate everyone. 2nd - we were told to preorder our meal which we did. In fact the restaurant printed a label for each person with their food ordered. I thought that was impressive and very organized. However 3 people did not get their food for which seemed like 10 or 15 minutes. And when inquiring about the food, one of the servers was rude. WSW-We apologize for the delay on the last few plates, made and corrected as quick as it could be made, as 1 was returned, letting the server know it was found. I apologize for the servers. We did have a talk about the subject. Please keep in mind that we were short handed and tending to all the other guest at the same time and were doing our best. 3rd - the man serving our drinks spilled/ dropped 2 glasses of mimosas one of which spilled on my brand new Coach purse. He did come back with a towel so I could wipe down my purse. My sister Dawn did mention this incident to one of the servers. No one came to apologize to me. WSW-I did apologize to Dawn when she notified me upon paying and she also did let me know that the server apologized and helped clean it up. She did not direct me to you. I will apologize for that. I am assuming the purse is not damaged?. Apology was to Dawn. Not to the affected party. 4th - I believe gratuity is based on how well you are served. That should be done at the end of the meal. They just got rewarded 20% of our bill for poor service. Gratuity is a recommendation NOT a requirement. In fact, we should have gotten some kind of discount/reimbursement for all of these mishaps. WSW-Being that it was a Banquet event order, it does state in the contract that Dawn signed, everything you need to know and that it's an automatic 20%. Even on tables 6 + with out a BEO attached. It's the restaurants policy. Keep in mind that there is no perfect place, everyone makes mistakes and grow from it. If the issues were major, ie: the food was not cooked well, the orders were wrong, we waited over x amount of time, we would have fixed it at payment. Nothing except for the spill was mentioned to me at check out. Based on this experience, my first impression of WSW was not a good one. Maybe more training is needed for the staff. WSW-We are working on bettering staff and look at this email as corrective criticism. We apologize that your 1st experience is not what you expected. Good view, good steaks, good service .... But weak drinks, they don't have big ice cubes for your old fashioneds, the salads were lackluster (think tgif), French onion soup was meh (think applebees), steak poke was not tartare but cooked cubes of steak (wouldn't recommend). Our prime ribs were the only thing on the menu that was prepared with love. So overall .... Probably wouldn't come again for the price point. read more

Breakfast is served from 6-10am daily. Whenever we go we always ask for Teresa. Her service is always excellent! For the best view, ask for a table next to the windows. Tables are spread apart, which makes it very comfortable. The service is fast, so you can be out in less than an hour. read more

Why would anyone go to this restaurant? This was the worst meal I've had in Hilo. They should be ashamed to charge what they charge for the food they serve. 50 dollars a person for truly terrible food. From the bread to the salad to the soup to the dry chewy disgusting prime rib everything was terrible. From start to finish the experience was outstanding! They provide sanitation at the front. If you are a hotel guest, let them know your name and room number. If you are an outside guest, it is best to make a reservation but they welcome walk-ins. The food is delicious at breakfast and at dinner and their alcoholic beverages are also great. Service is outstanding! The manager on the floor will check with each party dining in and the host/hostess greet you professionally and very welcoming. Servers are very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable about the food selections and Evan even provide other customer reviews. An example of this is when ordering an alcoholic beverage, our server was kind enough to break down the sweetness of a beverage or the strength of the alcohol in the beverage. Servers and runners on the floor are constantly checking if you need your beverage refilled, a takeout container for your unfinished food, and if the food is to your liking. Overall experience was spectacular! Not only do my family and I want to stay at that hotel again (another review of mine you should check out), but we will also happily return to this restaurant as well. It was my birthday and I reserved and requested a seat by the window specifically! Even though seats were empty we weren't given the table and forced to seat inside at a table with no view! We had a chat with the manager and he promised to change seats for us once they were empty but didn't ( i saw at least 3 window tables were vacated but we weren't given the table) Service was horrible, we had to ask multiple times for wet tissues and cutlery and the entre s were forced onto the table when we were still working on out apetizers! This was my first time visiting WSW for breakfast. The atmosphere was relaxing and looked clean. The server was attentive and polite. I ordered the WSW baked potato and cappuccino. It was potato wedges topped with Sour Cream, Cheddar Cheese, Bacon, Chives and an egg for $15. The cappuccino was $6. It was okay but not enough espresso flavor as I would like. Four of us went to their Sunday buffet to celebrate 2 peoples bday. Service, unlike previous visits, was bad. Had to look for server twice. Moved our dirty dishes to next table to make our table more suitable to eating. The food was mediocre. The only saving grace was at the end when their General Restaurant Manager came to our table apologizing for not offering a special dessert to our birthday friends. He explained the usual birthday cheese cake was now on the buffet line. Then he offered the birthday people a yuzu-lemonade, made from scratch. I tried this place for dinner for the first time. I was serviced very quickly initially and ordered a New York steak and the $8 add on salad bar. The salad bar had limited options, but was well worth the $8. I made a Caesar salad, pasta salad, and clam chowder which were all good. I was disappointed with my NY Steak as it was warmish, had no sear or crust, and was very bland. I didn't taste any salt or spices. I had to ask a table cleaner for salt and pepper since my server didn't check on me. The other stuff was good: the baked potato, vegetable bed, and onion crisps. Service was overall okay. We encountered this establishment as we were staying in the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. There are reservations required for both breakfast and dinner. We were lucky to be sat during breakfast. There is also a dress code of business casual, that is strictly enforced during dinner. I had a regular Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice. My husband enjoyed the oxtail soup. We came for dinner on Saturday and our expectations for a great meal were not met. For starters we ordered a caprese salad and bone marrow- The caprese salad came pre-salted, and it was so salty that I couldn't eat it. Also, the caprese was dressed with balsamic vinegar not a reduction. Bone marrow was good. Both of our cocktails with our starters were fantastic. For our main course we got the prime rib and lamb. We were not impressed. Wish I just got a steak instead. We bought a $178 bottle of Cabernet that came with dirty glasses. For dessert we got the brownie with whiskey ice cream. Brownie was hard and dry. Ice cream was good. We were really excited to finally make it down but sadly were not satisfied. I don't know if we will return. I've eaten here a couple of times and I've had a pleasant did I get experience both times. The ambience Eis casual and relaxed with beautiful views of Hilo bay. There is a spectacular wine display in the center of the dining room. There are floor to ceiling glass allowing for incredible views of the ocean and dazzling clouds and sky. They are famous for their steaks and also excellent seafood and shellfish options. The staff is gracious and helpful. The prices are reasonable for such a nice venue and food. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to visiting again. read more

Visiting from California with best friend and staying at the hotel. Had breakfast with the fabulous Kristen as our server. Met Laura the wait manager as well. Such nice ladies! Restaurant is clean, nice decor, window view of the water was gorgeous! Perfect mimosas with a guava orange juice. I'm pretty sure my breakfast is the best I've ever had! Eggs Benedict with crabcakes! Such a relaxing start to our day and incredible service! Thanks Kristen & Laura! Because it was such a nice meal we came back for dinner. Whiskey Steak and Wine Ah, toasted garlic bread slices are a must. I tried the fatty bonein. I like salty but even this was too salty for me. I enjoyed the mussels & savory broth. Here I wish they dont serve the closed ones. My entree was fresh kampachi. Delicious! I did not anticipate it was on soup (potatoes, mushroom, beans) but it was just right. Didnt feel eating meat but the menu stated USDA prim grade and wagyu beef. I'll come back for those. Its a great place for mid-high level dining. Its not pretentious, you dont have to whisper. I saw pictures that my friends posted of this place and the food looked delicious so we had to check it out. Since Covid we haven't eaten out much but I heard that this place was okay. I was happy to walk in and see that all the tables were distanced away from other tables. So we are off to a good start. We ordered appetizer and was pleasantly surprised when our waitress Sheila kept coming back to say that our order was on it's way out. Honestly it wasn't a long wait at all but it was nice that she kept coming to check on us and assure us that we were not forgotten. Appetizer was the bone marrow and poke. Both very delicious. While waiting for Dinner, Sheila again apologized that there was a big order just before us but ours was coming out shortly. Again, I don't think we were waiting long but it's nice that she came by and gave us an update. Dinner was the Rib Eye and Prime Rib. Both came out perfect. Even Ruth Chris couldn't make my meat perfect like this. We had left overs and Kealoha nicely boxed it up for us. Then desert... We weren't sure what to get and Kealoha and Shiela both gave us their honest opinion about the different options. It's rare to get an honest opinion and we appreciated it. We ended up getting the Cookie Monster. A nickname that I believe Sheila made up. It was delicious and a good choice. Overall, I'd say our experience there was right up to what we experienced at the Four Seasons. Service was excellent and Food was delicious. What we appreciated the most was that the staff was interactive and real. Our water glasses never went below 1/2 before it was being filled up again. Overall it was an excellent evening. Highly recommend checking it out. As for prices.. I believe it was reasonable and fair. I say reasonable because it's what I would expect to pay for the food I received and is about the average price for what you get. Even if cost were not a factor, the food is not even mediocre. Dry is the word for the day. The Kalua eggs Benedict was dry and had a tablespoon of hollandaise sauce. The crab was over cooked and the butter was the fake oil butter sauce that was missing the butter flavor. The server was slow with the endless mimosas (though she was nice). The sashimi was good but how does one mess up sashimi? The prime rib was tasty. Those were the only dishes worth noting. Ok I need to call some of you yelpers out on this one (unless I was extremely lucky which I doubt). Came out to Hilo and saw there was a new steak house in the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel I'm staying at and was excited to check them out. Then (as always) I checked yelp and you folks bashed this place pretty hard. I did notice however most of the reviews were 4-5mos old (which is when they opened) so I thought maybe they had a rough start and deserved a chance so I went and boy am I glad I did! This place was fantastic! Really nice decor. Clean and upscale but not overly foo foo or pretentious and a gorgeous view of Hilo Bay. But aside from the food (which I'll get to) the staff was simply amazing! Everyone from the greeter/maitre d, to the servers and the buss staff simply couldn't be have been nicer. Prompt, friendly and on it (I thought I had them as I was taking the last sip of my diet, but there Lorraine was with a refill, perfect timing). When the manager came over to see how I was doing, she was warm and genuinely sincere. Honestly some of the best service I've ever had anywhere. Now to the food. It was a little late and a late meal and a good night sleep don't peacefully coexist in my universe so I forwent the appetizers and dessert and just went for the main event. It's a steak house and that means red meat (people who go to steak houses and order chicken, fish or a salad really irritate me but I digress). I actually think I grill the best steak on the planet so I went with the prime rib. It was a beautiful 16oz cut cooked perfectly. Nicely seasoned, tender and juicy and the baked potato side was solid. My only beef (yea I guess pun intended) was I overly salt my red meat (hence my high BP) and there was no salt shaker on the table (they came by with a grinder which I tried to coerce from the server but no joy). I'm thinking that was more CV19 than the restaurants decision, so I'll give them a pass (and bring my own next time). Now many of the bad reviews mention the high prices. I actually find this curious? People here in Hilo have no problem going to Ken's and spending $20 on an omelet (not complaining, I love Ken's), but $40 for a great steak in a really nice restaurant is excessive? Seriously (and I'm not bashing) but some of y'all need to visit Oahu for some perspective. Finally, full disclosure, food wise WSW actually rates 4 stars, BUT, they easily get the extra star for the service and they get graded on a curve due to all the early bad reviews which I found completely unfounded. They don't know how to execute their menu. test your recipes and do QC before you serve your guests. Miso black cod was as sweet as candy, all the way through. It had far exceeded the max of 30 mins fish should be marinated. Fishy sugar is not good eats. Black cod is a lovely fish that is hard to mess up. Inedible. Side veggies were just plain bad. Both flavorless and poor execution. They were sold out of Caesar salad, so we ordered the second choice salad that had only Tzatziki as the dressing option and it was oily and bland. They used store-bought ground sesame paste straight from the jar. They failed to add a detectable level of salt, lemon, or garlic to form a flavorful tzatziki. Asked for a different dressing, but I was told they had no other options. Tried to doctor it with salt, pepper and lemon but it's embarrassing to keep asking them to come back to grind more salt and pepper as both the salt and pepper mills were very low producing. Ordered shrimp on the salad. The shrimp were precooked and then soaked in heavily salted brine that fully penetrated the whole shrimp and overpowered the delicate flavor shrimp offers as well as changed the texture of the shrimp. Too salty to enjoy. Steaks were ordered med-rare but they were cooked to a medium. No meat thermometer? It's just not that hard. Parmesan fries were mass-produced frozen fries with cheese on top. Not steakhouse quality. No catch-up offered, just mayo with a few drops of grocery store quality truffle infused oil. The White wine by the glass smelled like bleach. It did dissipate after 10 mins. Asparagus was woody and we're not peeled before being cooked. If you can't cut the bottom third of the asparagus with a steak knife..... don't serve it to your guests. Table/shared Lobster mac and cheese was served without a spoon. By the time the spoon arrived the heavy topping of cheddar cheese, which had been melted under a broiler before serving, had solidified so it was very difficult to serve. Don't melt cheddar cheese on Mac. Use a cheese that doesn't solidify quickly or a nicely seasoned buttery bread crumb. The flavor was ok, but not amazing..... Just run of the mill. No detectable lobster flavor. Oysters were good but they were served without the toppings that oyster lovers enjoy. All they offered upon request was Tabasco and it was in a cocktail sauce cup, making it impossible to control the quantity when pouring. Tabasco is in a bottle with a graduated for a reason; people wish to control the number of drops they add to their food. No shallot vinaigrette. No cocktail sauce was available. Oysters were served on round slices of lemon containing seeds that were difficult to squeeze. It's not hard to provide lemon wedges or a lemon half in a mesh filter bag, so there is no need to pick out seeds. Only one oyster fork was provided for oysters being shared by the table, so everyone had to share the same fork. Very responsive staff. Everyone on the floor were great. We felt horrible that staff had to serve such bad food. They knew the food was bad. read more

Huge disappointment! Hardly Yelp bad things but this needs to be said! To portray yourself as a steakhouse yet have no selection when it comes to breakfast steak is a crime!! So called "Pub Steak" with eggs and hash is sad. Asked for med rare, came out well done! No seasoning, dry and had a cut across the top. Toast was not toasted or buttered! Server was nice but clueless on customer satisfaction. How are you gonna respond with "oh for that price, I can see why you still ate it" after I complained about it being overcooked and tough. I ate it because I was hungry and she was nowhere to be found when I got my food. Seems management leads this poor quality as she asked me about my experience and did nothing about it.. Reading other reviews, seems to be the trend. Oh and $20 for a breakfast steak?? That's normal IMO. Not expensive, especially coming to a hotel restaurant. It's partially my fault, I seen the red flags up when you pride yourself as a wine and whiskey steak house. As I look at the selections to choose from, this is more of a sports bar selection. My fiancé and I had the opportunity to dine here during our staycation, and it had to be one of our best dinners! I believe the "whiskey and steak" in the name caught his eye. We dined on a Monday and enjoyed the "Surf and Turf" special - 12oz ribeye cooked to perfection with a loaded baked potato and 3 gigantic, juicy garlic butter Kauai prawns. Only for $39! What a deal!!!! The lobster mac n cheese was also a treat, oh so cheesy with a crusty top. Service was stellar - our server, Rick, did a fantastic job and topped off our beautiful night. The sommelier was knowledgeable 4. The restaurant is overlooking coconut island... come on, how beautiful is that. The prices for the apps are reasonable The steaks and seafood a bit high end but no big deal. Never had kohlrabi and I'm so happy my first time having it was here... two words super ono. The more words oh emm geee!!! My husband had the Kusshi- it was a treat for him! I could tell on his face with every bite how heavenly they were. We shared the seafood skillet. - if you love garlic, this is sure to keep the vampires away! We loved it so much I was sad to see the skillet leave the table without having completely sopped every remaining flavor from it. Lob mac- my first bite already had a bite of lobster. The flavor is beautiful, took it home and ate it later- felt like I was still at WSW. Slow roasted PR. - the outside layer flavor on point. For me the temp was perfect. For my husband it was not how we he agreed flavor was great. So happy a place like this exist in Hilo. I felt like I was back home. It's been a while since we have dined this way. What a complete disappointment. Their whiskey collection was very disappointing. For a restaurant that has whiskey and wine as a part of their name, their selection was terrible. They even said they pride themselves on having hard to get whiskeys for their customers to try. Knob Creek is decent whiskey but hardly a difficult whiskey to find. Safeway carries them. The EH Taylor boxes so proudly displayed in the wine case were empty boxes when we tried to order it. The food was equally disappointing. Their prime rib didn't taste like prime. It tasted more like choice meats. Their fish was dry. Don't bother about the prime rib poke. It tasted like day old prime rib cubes that were over salted. My wife's ribeye was completely raw in the middle when she asked for medium rare. Of course they took it back and overcooked it to well done where she just couldn't eat it. Of course they still charged us for it. They even had the balls to charge us an automatic 20 percent gratuity for our party of 6. No wonder our service was terrible. The waiter was already getting paid anyways. They do deserve 1 star for the view from the dining room. It's beautiful but they really should invest in some blinds. At 5 pm, the sun is blinding in the dining room. For their price point, this place is a complete fail. Whiskey Steak and Wine (WSW) is such a great concept. The execution is just terrible. I've had better cooked food at IHOP at a quarter of the price. I would have not cared about their prices but the food quality was just so bad that I'm appalled that I paid that much money for that terrible a meal.
