The 39oz bone-in prime ribs is so goOoooDd , perfectly cooked medium-rare , well-seasoned with herb and spice paired with garlic mash! I would highly recommend this steakhouse to anyone who are visiting Hilo. We also ordered guava baby back ribs and prime rib poke. Overall it was a good experience dining here! First I want to preface this review with the fact that based on other reviews and word of mouth I went in with low expectations and expected to be disappointed. Well, my expectations were met and then some. My wife and I went this past Saturday for an early valentine dinner. Where to start? I guess I'll start with the restaurant name itself. (W)hiskey- I'm perplexed. It ranges from the absurd $340 30 year old scotch to the dive bar staple Jamesons with little of note or interest in between. It's like whoever decided on the whiskey selection just threw darts at a whiskey chart. Seems they didn't bother to research or read/watch whiskey reviews. That and the number of whiskeys is far, far fewer than it should be considering the first word in the name of the restaurant is Whiskey. Fail. (S)teak. This is and even more egregious naming convention. 2 steaks, really? How can any restaurant consider themselves to be a steak house with a total of 2 steaks on the menu? Shameful. It has 4 times as many seafood items than it does steak . It's more seafood with 2 steaks thrown in to appease the non fish eaters. Well, there's a restaurant 4 miles down the road that already does this and does it 100% better at half the cost. Fail big time. (W)ine. I don't know enough to comment on this so I'll pass judgement to those that know more. Food- There was one redeeming item that we had. The cray(craw)fish platter. I'm not an expert on them but the sauce was good and there were quite a lot. A decent deal for $17. I had the burger- worst burger I've ever had. I asked for just under medium, got rare. You would expect a rare burger to be juicy, but no, it was dry, mushy and tasteless. No sear, no seasoning. It was like eating tofu. Just where is this place getting its beef? A white van down by the river? And to top it off it had the cheap mushy pink tomatoes instead of you know the good ones. Served with a few frozen fries with no seasoning. Just like the burger. If In and Out burger can serve hundreds of customers per day and make fresh fries, why can't a supposed high end steakhouse do the same. Skip this abomination of tasteless mush and head to McDonald's and get 2 Mcdoubles and a large fry for $5. Both the burger and fries are 100% better. My wife got the 32 ounce prime rib, medium well. When it came out we had high hopes since after sitting under the broiler for a few minutes to bring it up to medium well temp it had a nice looking sear. Well you sure can't judge a book or apparently meat by its cover. Totally tasteless. Even the outer part that should be well seasoned with a crust of sea salt, black pepper and garlic was totally barren of any semblance of taste. Prime rib really doesn't have much flavor on its own, hence that au jus. Well the WSW au jus was little more than tepid brown water. Does this head chef have an aversion to salt and seasoning? Shame. Two days later we fried the leftovers up in some olive oil, put on some pink sea salt and a little black pepper on it and it was actually good at that point. We order the "loaded" baked potato with the prime rib. It was actually larger that I was expecting but that's where the good news ends. Loaded to this chef means a few pieces of cheddar cheese, a few crumbles of bacon, and about three little green onion slivers. No sour cream and no detectable amount of butter. It was dry as the Chilean desert and clearly microwaved and not baked. We had to ask for butter. We asked for some butter. They brought out a small container of melted butter and then had the gall to charge an extra $2.50 for it. It still wasn't enough to make the potato edible. For desert we tried the ulu chocolate cheese cake. It was dry and sour. Kind of like the rest of the meal. As for the rest, the service was good not great. It's better at Jackie Rey's. The view was nice. Those are the only reasons this place doesn't get a one star rating. After reading the article in the paper about the head chef, the first thing that came to my mind was- Why can't he seem to keep a job? Now I know. It kind of kills me to write this review, but it needs to be done. We were so excited to try this new restaurant, and I really want them to succeed as there are very few upscale restaurants in Hilo. That said, they are going to have to make major improvements to get into that category. Currently the only thing upscale in this dining experience is the price. This is the most expensive restaurant in Hilo, and nearly the most expensive on the island (certainly the most expensive single menu item I've seen). That isn't a problem for me, if the quality and overall dining experience is commensurate. Currently it is not. When you come in you are seated at a totally bare, cheap laminate table. Literally the table is set with nothing. The chairs don't even match the tables; it feels like a cheap diner, not a posh steakhouse. All that is needed to fix this is some crisp white tablecloths and perhaps a modern floral centerpiece or even just a candle. Things get worse when they do start bringing flatware and plates, and they are very cheap and low quality. The cloth napkins are downright shabby. Clearly they are using the same setting from the previous buffet restaurant, which are fine for a buffet but not really what you expect at a steakhouse. The same issues persist with the food presentation. There isn't any. At all. Perhaps the chef is a minimalist and wants his dishes to speak for themselves, but the problem is any flaw magnifies itself. The plate with the filet (not 9 oz. as advertised) and "loaded" baked potato that was clearly not loaded at all just looks sad. Again, like something from a diner not the $51 plate it was. The worst was dessert. I have never, ever been served something like this an any nice restaurant. No drizzle, no presentation, and it wasn't even cut straight. Nothing felt special. As for the food itself: Appetizers were miso butterfish collar and kohlrabi. Butterfish was pretty good, slightly overcooked though. Kohlrabi was a miss, just kind of soggy. Served in a paper cup like bar food. The steak was actually quite delicious and cooked very well, the potato not very good. There weren't enough toppings to match the potato so it was dry and flavorless. We ordered kampachi (I forgot to take a photo) and this dish had major problems. The fish itself was served with crispy skin up, which I usually love, but was slightly overcooked as well. I choked on a bone (and found two more) in the filet. Find your fish tweezers and use them! The vegetables and broth it was served in was also a choking experience. It was full of chili threads, which kept getting stuck in my throat. Eventually I just picked them out. Broth was bland, and the potatoes were very undercooked. The diced veg felt like leftovers night, not a special dish. Total miss. The Ulu Chocolate pie was actually delicious despite bad presentation. It does need a drizzle, or something creamy with it as it's very dense and rich. Maybe a vanilla coulis? The bottle of wine we washed all this down with was fantastic, as was the wine and whisky lists. They have this part right. The good? Service. Servers were on point all night, did an excellent and attentive job (including wine service which can go just about any way in Hawai'i). Service tends to be the downfall of many other excellent local restaurants and there were no issues here whatsoever. I really want to see WSW improve. But the only way this food and price point is going to work here in Hilo is if the overall dining experience is elevated. Nothing felt special except the wine and company. There was no experience; it was just eating food. In the past for the "special" meals (birthdays, anniversaries) we generally make a LONG drive to somewhere like Merrimans or Napua or Browns. I was so excited to try Hilo's new & only steakhouse, but was sadly disappointed. Our group shared appetizers: kampachi poke, truffle fries, miso butterfish, and bone marrow. Everything tasted okay but nothing blew my mind. However, the bone marrow came with NO MARROW. Yup, just the bone (see picture). I had no choice but to send it back. They brought another one out and apologized, but still. How does that happen?! I ordered the slow roasted prime rib. It was a thick cut and tasted pretty good. Rice was mushy and hard to eat but not a big deal. Tried the uni butter sauce (an extra $3 for a tablespoon sized serving) which was the weirdest tasting butter I've had. No taste of uni at all. Garlic shrimp was nothing special either. The Presentation for everything was non-existent. When you go to a "higher end" restaurant, you expect all the bells and whistles. There weren't any drizzles, sauces, or garnish on any of the entrees. These are small details but can make a huge difference. Dessert was basic. It seemed like a defrosted boxed cheesecake on a plate. Again, no drizzle, no presentation. Just Plain & sad. Service was okay. Our waitress was rushy and didnt seem experienced. She didnt offer to refill our waters once. We did separate checks and ALL of our orders were mixed up and on the wrong checks. Went for Sunday brunch. Food was decent but service was very underwhelming. Hostess was resting her head in her hand, did not even look up while checking us in. While eating, had to ask for old plates to be cleared and for drinks and refills because no one ever came voluntarily to check on us. Restaurant was not busy. We were sat right by the bar/server area and they were mostly standing around talking story the whole time we were there. Have been here a few times for dinners/celebrations, first time for brunch. Service has always been very lackluster. For the prices charged, service and professionalism from staff need a complete overhaul. read more

I had really high expectations maybe I shouldn't have I understand we are in The times of covid And open a business right now is probably difficult. With that being said I was expecting more. I made reservations and arrived about 10 minutes early and was still seated about on time. The service were friendly and were attentive. Lets start with the ambience: I understand with covid you can't have condiment bottles etc on the table but for an upscale steak joint you would think the tables would have table clothes or maybe a centrepiece of some sort. Instead of had more of a cafeteria feel. The layout hasn't really changed much since the previous restaurant except has a wine tower in the centre of the restaurant. Think a lot more could have been done perhaps a bar inside the restaurant instead of in the lounge area would have been more appropriate. Food: I started off with the bone marrow as an appetiser The menu picture online shows 4 focaccia points But you only get two. Maybe the only give you too because that's all that is needed for the amount of bone marrow you get. The taste was OK but a bit blandNot sure I would order that again. Any good steak joint should be able to do a Burger pretty darn well and is a key indicator how the stakes will be. So I always start off with a Burger before shelling out big money for a steak With any new place I always start with medium rare before I trust them to go with total rare. I ordered medium rare and definitely got rare. The top bun held up pretty well but the bottom portion definitely did not Everything kept sliding off and the bun was breaking apart Flavour wise it was OK but there's at least 3 other places in town that do it much better ..the side of French fries were definitely not crispy. I don't think at this point I would shell out the money for the steaks. I believe these are the same folks that ran the previous restaurant and I was hoping for better but at this point I can't say that's the case.. if you are expecting Ruth Chris or a Mortons... you will be dissappointed... Been in the islands for 10 days mostly was happy hour food. Kauai and then the big island. Got around the the Hilo side on our last leg and decided to we wanted a nice sit down steak dinner. Didn't hold out too much hope in finding one but were we wrong. This place knocked it out of the park. The prime rib was actually cooked there on site and not just re- warmed. The baked potato was perfect and the atmosphere and service was amazing. So happy to have found this place. We're visiting from California and just passing thru looking for a place to eat . Came across the WSW and was pleasantly surprised how good it was . Parking was tight but found a side parking lot . Decor was very nice and even got a table at the window facing the ocean . Food was good and waited were nice . Had a nice caprese and onion soup . So very good in every way! Food: fresh yummy bread and was that truffle butter? I ordered the Fresh Catch-- opakapaka, veg, and rice--oh yum! The Perfect Lilikoi Margarita was delicious, too. I didn't have room for dessert, but everything that I saw going to other tables looked wonderful. Service: impeccable. I was a solo diner, and was seated next to a lovely window table...and treated with respect. Setting: gorgeous. There's a wall of windows that looks out onto Coconut Island and the bay. Beautiful photos of Hawaiian dancers. Tables are spaced far enough apart that you can't hear your neighbors unless they are talking loudly. This was a wonderful dining experience, a real treat. The only reason I give it a 3 is because our waiter Dustin was great! For an "upscale" restaurant in a hotel, where's the linens? No table covers, no linen napkins. (Hotels have powerful washing machines so no covid excuses.) The 4 seater tables are so small, no room for anything else besides your primary plate, which were from Queens Court, all dingy and scratched up, along with QC's utensils. The cheesecakes are store bought. The "fully loaded" baked potato was a far cry from fully loaded. Cafeteria setting for sure. On the plus side, the NY steak was good, the ice cream was ono! It's nice to have a steak house in Hilo but can't compare the quality , presentation and service with what we have in mainland USA . They offer a great view to overlook Liliuokalani park if you get to sit bedsides the window . Kids menu offer red velvet pancake with add on side order such as fried rice and egg. Oxtail soup with rice is the go to option rather than the egg Benedict I tried as the salad and the whole Benedict were soaked wet in lilikoi sauce , or to be exact , lilikoi soup . Personally I don't like my food wet or drizzled with sauce all over as I wasn't ordering locomoco if I want wet food . Fries is good ! This was a very pleasant surprise. I'm quite happy with the upgrades that the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has made to the dining room and lounge. I arrived early and had a drink in the Wai'oli Lounge while waiting for my friends. The server was very pleasant and my martini came quickly. It was just right. My friends arrived and also enjoyed their drinks. The view of Hilo bay and Mauna Kea is worth the visit. I received a text message when our dining room table was ready which is a nice service. Our server was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Even though the dining room was busy she always was able to check on how we were doing without being intrusive. We ordered pupus and another round of drinks which all came quickly. Good marks with those. We were all very happy with our entrees. Generous servings and excellent preparation. No complaints at all. After the initial greetings and asking our party if we will be drinking anything, our waiter would disappear for long periods of time! I feel like he was not happy we did not order any alcoholic drinks. Mind you, we are a party of 6 adults (one being pregnant) and an 8mo baby total of 7 people. For th price we paid I expected top quality services, especially since they added a service charge! We also went there for my father's birthday. I heard mixed reviews from friends so you know what I had to go and see for myself. But you know what when my friends went they went early...I went after a month or so after they opened and figured they worked out all of their kinks. So it was my moms birthday so it was the perfect excuse to go and see for myself. I honestly think that the food and service was really good. Made a res ahead, requested table near windows & indicated special occasion. Arrived on time and seated right at entrance, about as far from window as you can get, told last table available. Would totally have been okay with that is not for them many tables along or nearer the windows that were empty, some for at least a half an hour and others most of the duration of our meal. No, this was not due to limited seating. Overall ambiance of the room was nice, if not loud, but the tables...no tablecloths (not even placemats) no table setting of any kind, I mean no silverware, napkin, no candle, nothing a blank laminate table! They then come around an hand you your silverware rolled in a napkin (at least it was cloth). The lighting is set for mood so if you are over 50 bring your extra strong reading glasses. Try reading the sheet of paper that serves as the menu (pictured below) in "mood lighting". Just about everything is ala carte and a little on the pricey side, but hey if it's really good, then fine...but it wasn't. It was fair, that was it, just fair. I tried a glass of their exclusive red wine, a Zinfandel, don't waste your money. They have a limited but interesting whiskey selection and make a big production with the whiskey cart. I tried an Irish I had never tried. It's a nice touch but seems overdone compared to everything else. For those that did not complete their meal, saving room for dessert, we requested it be wrapped, and had to inquire if dessert was available...they brought us 1 tiny sheet for the table to share (more tiny print!) with just a few items, & take out boxes to the table to pack our own! At that we decided to skip dessert, got the bill and went elsewhere for ice cream. Our wait staff were very lovely people. They really need to step it up in the kitchen, the quality of food and work on training a bit more. I think they need to decide what type of venue they really want to be and tweak accordingly. Upon arrival, we were greeted by two delightful women. This level of enthusiasm and kindness continued throughout our experience. My family and I arrived at about 7am. The restaurant was not crowded, like I saw other reviewers mentioned. The large windows that displayed a cloudy, rainy morning was pleasant (would've been better if it was sunny but it is what it is). I ordered the eggs and hash breakfast. The homemade corn beef hash was delicious, it tasted genuine unlike the canned dish I'm used to. The dish came with rice and an artistically cut green onion. The presentation was great and a good change from the continental breakfast that I had the previous morning. Our waiter and another employee checked in on us and was readily available to service us with any request we had. The price was comparable to a IHOP that we have back home (NJ). I would definitely recommend this place if you're staying at this hotel. Because we were staying in the hotel and had been out all day, we decided to eat here and head upstairs after for bed. We ordered the boneless prime rib and added a lobster tail to it. Honestly, our meal was good, and we were satisfied, but it wasn't great. Our prime rib was delivered to our table in steak fashion. It was sliced, then grilled on a char grill for added measure. If we wanted a steak, we would have ordered it. It looked and tasted like a steak because it was finished in the grill. We wanted a nice slice of prime rib. The service here is great. Our side of creamed spinach was not really that good. It looked and tasted like something that was defrosted, heated in a microwave and then served. Our family has been to WSW quite a few times, but since we live across island it is only every 4-6 months or so. This place used to be amazing but was disappointing on our recent visit. I highly doubt we will be going back for dinner. We went for dinner on 11/11/23. We had a reservation at 6:30pm (they open at 5) and were seated timely. We immediately placed orders for the kids food, drinks, and appetizers. Half our table got their drinks about 20 min after we ordered (whiskey). The other half did not get drinks till 45 min and we had to ask about them twice (vodka martini and plain ice tea). When drinks came we put in our dinner orders, however, they were out of lamb, filet, and oysters. After we had been at the restaurant for 1.5 hours, our appetizers and kid meals finally arrived. The escargot was barely warm so the cheese on top was no longer melted and almost a hard crust. The bone marrow and truffle fries were great. Dinner didn't show up for over 2 hours!! The Maine lobster tail was cold, overcooked, and TINY- like I'm talking 2-3 oz maybe! 3 people ordered the rib eye- all three steaks were different sizes and the temperatures were uneven. Our waitress was mediocre at best and we had to flag her down and bother other servers since she was no where to be found, or would walk right by as we were trying to get her attention. We spent 3 hours in the restaurant!! The majority of the time was spent waiting just to end up with mediocre food. We spent over $600- we were overall very disappointed. It took 45 minutes to get our breakfast. When it came the order was incorrect. The ambiance was nice but very noisy.

Service: Walk-in dining with my grandson on Friday evening, 11/3/2023, arrived at 7:00. Granted, we had no reservation, so the manager booked us for 7:30 and we waited in the lobby. That's fair. Came in from the lobby at 7:30 and as we were being seated, I noticed the numerous empty tables, so I'm wondering to myself why we had to wait 30 whole minutes just because we didn't have a reservation??? That's fine. Note: The restaurant never filled up, there were empty tables the entire hour and a half we were there. Ambience: We've dined here many times in the past, both week days and on weekends, always a pleasant and wonderful experience. However, on this night, the music was so loud we couldn't hear our own conversation. After placing our order at 7:40, I was compelled to walk up to the front desk and friendly asked if they could tell the musician couple if they would turn down the volume at least a couple dBs on their amp. Ironically, it was the end of their gig at 8:00 so they packed up their gear and left. Food and Service: The walk up salad bar and soup were fresh and delicious, great selection too. However, watch not to bump your head into the sneeze glass, as it is not angled downward! Done with the soup and salad, now at 8:30, waiting for almost an hour for our meal to arrive and starting to become impatient, I needed to flag down our waitress to ask her to please check up on or order. At about the same moment, a busboy finally wheeled in our order and kindly placed it on our table after a 55 minute wait. Lo and behold, our order was lukewarm, my 18 oz ribeye steak was dry, plus the truffle butter was missing. My grandson endured and ate his lukewarm New York cut and lobster mac, but not being pleased with my own serving, I asked our waitress to correct the situation. She took the steak back to the kitchen and now, waiting another ten minutes, my same cut arrived warmer, albeit drier. I took a couple of bites, and being too overcooked and dry, I told my waitress I finally lost my appetite and was quite dissatisfied with my experience. She retrieved my partially eaten steak and had the manager remove the $50.00 charge from my bill. The manager subsequently arrived at our table and apologized for my unpleasant experience, (also mentioning other customers made him aware of the too loud music), unbeknownst to me, my steak was not included in our take-home package. That's fair. Experience: At 73, I love to dine out with my grandson and we go out at least every week to any chosen restaurant in Hilo. I'm always very friendly and courteous (including that night) and have keen awareness for both, excellent service and substandard service. Either experience to its extreme, I'd mention to the manager. (Who would know if not shared?). In this instance, I regret this is my first negative Yelp review, more so, for a supposedly very reputable restaurant in Hilo. Maybe the stars weren't aligned, maybe a bad day for everyone, I was compelled to share this experience. read more
