This was a really great meal and an excellent atmosphere. I had the deviled eggs, which were well made and sprinkled with Aleppo pepper. They were really flavorful and we'll balanced. The Thüringer bratwurst was recommended with cherry pepper relish and we added grilled onions as well. The relish was a little spicy and had bits of bacon, but the grilled onions ended up my favorite! The potato salad wasn't as good as I had hoped; it felt a little heavy on the dill. The winning aspect was the bread the wurst came on. Will definitely come back! read more

Went to Wursthall for 2nd time Sunday eve, right when it opened at 5pm - ordered pretzel with Obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread), Bratwurst with sauerkraut and a Weissbier - food came quickly but not the beer and after asking and waiting a general announcement was made to all that the beer system was 'kaput' = no beer could be served and the restaurant was closing and to compensate everyone the food was on the house - kudos to Wursthall and their management for handling the situation with grace; left happy leaving a big tip (for the waitstaff who would be losing out on a profitable evening). However, I am reducing my original opening day 5 star review to 4 stars as the food was not up to expectations like it was at my first visit. The Obatzda was not well done - granted there are a thousand recipes for Obatzda but Wursthall's version, though not bad was missing some of the essence, in particular missing small chunks of camembert (or brie) and too skimpy on the Hungarian paprika (both necessary base ingredients) as well as too much cream cheese (not in original German versions). The pretzel, despite coming from Anne, the German baker master at Backhaus, was soft and spongy (unfortunately the way Americans expect pretzels to be) and not at all like a crunchy-on-the-outside-pillowy-on-the-inside German pretzel. The Bratwurst was good but a bit bland - too bland. The kraut on top was good and the delicious selection of mustards helped ( a lot ! ) but the sausage was only 4 star. Hoping Kenji can tweak these dishes and get the beer equipment fixed, so I can still go to Wursthall to satisfy my Bavarian cravings. read more

So I have waited over a year to come here. Wursthall was the culminating event for our 2000 mile road trip. After sharing at the menu, I had devised a way to try as many things as possible with our family of 2 adults and 2 children. We had the soft pretzel, curry wurst potatoes, schnitzel sandwich, shrimp curry spatzle, grilled cheese with tomato soup dip, and the Korean fried chicken. Probably the thing I was most excited about was also the only thing that was not awesome-the Korean fried chicken. Don't get me wrong... It was ok. Just was a miss for me. The hot sauce on it was good. They needed more of it on the side, and the breading on the chicken slid right off and the waffle was tasty, but not crisp. The soft pretzel was the best I've ever had, with my husband saying "I finally understand why you like these". The chicken schnitzel sandwich was AWESOME. My son got it as the kids meal and the portion was huge. I devoured my quarter. I love schnitzel, and this was a fantastic version. The grilled cheese was tasty and the tomato soup was of course fantastic. The curry wurst potatoes were so good they have me looking up a currywust sauce recipe so I can make them with German sausages at home. The shrimp curry spatzle was super tasty. I was wondering why I had never put kimchi and curry in my spatzle before! All in all, a super fun meal and I'm sad I don't live in the area. I was also hoping for a kenji sighting, as I am a huge fan of his book, videos, and section on serious eats. Not that night. One word of warning, I did get salt fatigue. Which was interesting because nothing tasted too salty....but I really really wanted to try his smash burger also, but I knew I couldn't because at the end, every bite made my tounge burn with that too salty feeling. My review is based on service, food, and beer selection. I came to Wursthall at 5:45pm on a Wednesday with a party of 6, I think it took us about 30-40 minutes to get seated. The place was packed, but the wait wasn't too bad. Things we got: Chicken schnitzel, pretzels with black pepper honey butter, curry wurst, deviled eggs, broccolini appetizer, impossible doner, Italian wursts, sausage party platter- eat the sauerkraut underneath the sausages, side of 3 buns, pumpkin seed sundae. 1 Liter of Helles beer for myself to tie it all together. I loved that our party was big enough to try a little bit of everything on the menu! Things I personally recommend: broccolini appetizer- good flavor and tasty greens, the Italian wursts, the curry wurst, the impossible doner-if you're vegetarian it tastes reaaal and you can't go wrong with the schnitzel. I liked the honey butter, but wish they gave more than what went with the pretzels and I really enjoyed the beer. Also, sundae was great. I'm not even an ice cream lover. Important to note that was probably way too much food -not an issue with me. :) There were 3-4 sides of barely touched potato salad, salads. Liked the service, pretzel, cheese dip, butter with honey and liked the beer. Andechser lager is one of my overall favorites. The sausage though was chewy and tough and not juicy at ALL! Has nothing to do with good german sausage. I guess my expectations where too high as the name suggests they know their wurst (sausage). Bummer ! read more

A group of 5 senior ladies went for lunch today....very high prices for what you get. Service was way below par. Our plates arrived at separate times...mind was cold before anyone elses got there. Several lunches were served on tiny plates making it impossible to eat without scattering food. Used dirty plates and silverware sat on our table long after we were finished. When the waitress brought our bill she had divided the total by 5. Some of us had drinks, some didn't and our lunches were all different prices. Then we were informed that they don't accept cash! WHAT????? The room was SO noisy, very bad accoustics, lots of loud talking and blaring music. Will never go back! read more

I knew this is a German spot, and I felt guilty ordering the fried chicken. As someone who learned to cook from Food Lab, I felt compelled to see how his recipe translated when executed professionally. It ended up being essentially the best fried chicken I've ever had. For whatever reason, the spices didn't sit well with me and I ended up turning sick later that night. Despite that, I'm still giving this place 5 stars and would go back and order it again in a heartbeat. I have been here twice now for dinner: the first time 1 week after opening, and then another just this weekend 1 month later. Both times me and a friend, and both times there was an approx. 15-20 min wait for a table (which is on the fast side because 2 people can get called up the line ahead of larger groups). I would say that the food is certainly high quality and flavorful, and there's a good lively atmosphere to this restaurant. Service is spotty because they are busy, and you just have to flag down waiters. But anyway I doubt I will be making my way back here as a regular. Simply put, I got the idea after 2 visits, and now there are other places I want to try, if I'm going to spend in this price range. German food isn't my go-to favorite, and the prices here at Wursthall are high enough that I would only go again if friends wanted to try it for the first time. Just to mention, thanks to Wursthall for putting their full menu (with prices) online. Not many restaurants do that honest step, so at least that's appreciated. I have had: chicken sandwich ($18!), wurst sandwich plate ($16), various appetizers (~$6-8) and beers ($7-9 for 1/2 L). Everything was well cooked and flavorful. But just a few dollars too expensive, for dishes that seem to require very little cooking expertise (not talking about the ingredients). The 6-sausage plate for $50 is really a stretch. To be honest about German food, I don't really see how that allows Kenji's techniques and expertise found in his books to shine through. There was nothing about the food that made me say, wow, this is what it tastes like when someone really talented applies his/her methods that I've only read about. In fact, the mustard was the most memorable part. Perhaps if it was something I couldn't easily do at home, I would be less price-sensitive/price-critical. I love to come here for the Impossible Döner Kebap with salad. It's definitely one of the best vegan sandwiches I've ever had. Satiating "meat" with nice texture and flavor and the sesame bun is appropriately toasted. Reminds me of late night döners in Berlin. It's great to see that more restaurants are including plant-based menu items and alternative proteins. Even if you are not "vegan" -- give it a try! read more

Really nothing good about this place except a nice waiter--though he spoke so softly my friend couldn't understand him. I had asparagus/sauerkraut soup which came tepid, really weird tasting, and exceptionally salty. Certainly wouldn't recommend it. The pretzel was nice and warm, but it was $6 and surely not even as good as cheaper ones from street venders. There were two of us, and they brought first one thing, then another, then another. Everything should have been brought at the same time, and all warm at the same time, too. It's noisy and not attractive. Really nothing at all to recommend it. Excellent beer selection is tempered by below average food, average service, and high prices. Regarding the food, I recognize that it's common for German restaurants to basically serve bar snacks, but this was at a whole different level than I expected. I ordered the traditional pretzel, but they gave me the other pretzel, stating that it was "on the house" because they messed up my order. I thought: no big deal, it's acceptable as a pretzel, so I'll just bear with this. Then the fried potatoes came out-- they were pretty bad. The high prices led me to believe that these two items as my entree would be enough, but they weren't. So I left hungry. Regarding the service, it took ten minutes between entering and getting my first beer, and we seemed to have three different servers. They were nowhere to be found during our actual meal, and this must be a common problem because there were other people waving their hands in the air to get the servers' attention. But one of our servers happily brought us the bill, so I know they care about that. Regarding the prices, the bill for two people was $63 and I didn't even get an entree (and my guest didn't even get a beer). At that point I noticed that they didn't comp my $9 pretzel like they said they would, which is pretty strange. I won't be returning unless it's for beers after work. read more

Came with a large party to celebrate a birthday. Excellent pub food! I absolutely loved the soft pretzel with honey butter. Could not get enough of the honey butter. Very kid friendly as they have a kids table where kids can color. ordered a grilled cheese for my toddler. The actual grill cheese was ok but loved the tomato soup dip that came with it. Wish the soup was larger! also highly recommend the crispy potatoes with bacon and onion. I got the chicken and portobello braut. Good size and would get again. finally made it to Wursthall tonite, got in at 5:45 before the crowds. Nice airy room with high ceilings and white- wood tables, all very clean looking and modern. The service was fine and the food was amazing, excellent flavors and combinations. Negative: the noise!!! Hard to have a conversation. Perhaps later would be quieter??? As we were leaving the people waiting in line for a seat were told to wait outside. Now, San Mateo wind and evening chill are not conducive to waiting outside. I'd probably end up at O"Neills!! Having said that, I wish the restaurant all the BEST! it's too handsome a landmark building to leave empty. read more

I was so excited to go to Kenji's restuarant, I was one of his biggest fan. I even overlooked the fact that he has never responded to any of my cooking questions on instagram. I guess he taught his staff to be equally as dismissive and arrogant, because this was the worst service we have ever had. We are out here on vacation, and I am very upset that we passed up on other spots to come here. The food is good, but you will immediately get the vibe that you don't matter at all. Its sad, i've been looking forward to coming here for months and have spent the past few years supporting this guy. Never again read more
