I needed somewhere to sit for a spell, escape the ungodly Texas heat, and grab something to eat while my vehicle was charging. Xian Noodles seemed to be calling my name, or, more accurately, responding to the increasingly loud growling coming from my stomach. Walking in, my first thought was that this reminded me of some of the little dive restaurants I've seen in movies out of Japan and Hong Kong: places where the surroundings might make one question the decision for about thirty seconds, right up until the food arrives and suddenly none of it matters. The sushi bar sits immediately to the right, while a wall partially hides the small dining room beyond it. There's no delicate way to put this, the place isn't much to look at. Think 1970s-style wood paneling, scuffed floors, aging booths, and décor that appears to have stopped caring about trends several decades ago. And strangely enough, I kind of liked it. The woman who showed me to my booth was also my server, and I ordered fairly quickly. I even got to choose my own noodles, which is where my judgment began to fail me. Mistake number one: I apparently selected the largest noodles known to mankind, massive, pappardelle-like ribbons that looked less like noodles and more like delicious strips of pasta upholstery. Mistake number two: I neglected to ask about the heat level. It was spicy. Very spicy!! The kind of heat where you keep eating because it tastes fantastic even as your forehead begins negotiating terms of surrender. But the food was genuinely delicious. Rich, flavorful, spicy, and far better than the surroundings had any right to suggest. My only real battle was trying to wrangle those enormous noodles with chopsticks. After several increasingly unsuccessful attempts, and realizing I was probably providing entertainment for anyone watching, I swallowed my pride and embarrassingly asked for a fork and knife. That contrast is really what makes Xian Noodles memorable. I've eaten at little hole-in-the-wall places where the floors were worn, the furniture had seen better decades, and absolutely nobody cared because the kitchen was turning out food worthy of a five-star restaurant. Xian has a little of that same spirit. In fact, rather than trying to make the place polished or fancy, I think they should lean all the way into it: embrace the "dive" aesthetic and give the dining room the energy of a tucked-away Hong Kong noodle shop or a Tokyo street-food stall. Because when the food is this good, nobody should care about the paneling. read more

We ordered it more than 4 times ... One big thing that left a lasting impression on me were the noodles. I believe we just ordered some regular stir fried noodles and did not expect it to be so delicious!!!! You know when you eat noodles and you immediately know that they are made fresh in-house? That was my first impression. I absolutely love this place especially during the weekdays and lunch time for their AYCE! The AYCE is extensive and the menu caters to everyone's taste buds. The fish and noodles are fresh and for that price you can't beat it! The AYCE is only during lunch time so that's probably it isn't known on IG but it's one of Austin's best kept secrets. I hate to write a bad review but this needs to be said. I ate AYCE at Xian for the first (and last) time this weekend. Everything was going well at first, until a young woman behind us threw up chunky vomit all over the ground and her table. My fiancé watched her throw up the first time, I only heard it and then saw the evidence all over the seat and the ground. Then I looked over at her and watched her throw up all over their table. Now, obviously it is not the restaurant's fault that this person threw up everywhere. However, they did not make a real effort to clean it up. The staff used paper napkins and tiny squares of washcloths to push the chunky vomit into a trash bag under their table, but did not disinfect the ground, seat, or table. We were gagging due to the smell of the vomit. I had to hold a handful of ginger to my nose to mask the vomit smell. Luckily we were at the end of our meal, but I had to request that they put a towel onto the ground that we could step on to avoid walking through vomit chunks and bringing that into our car and home on the bottoms of our shoes. I would expect a restaurant to train their employees on food safety and cleanliness standards. I don't expect them to kick everyone out and deep clean the restaurant, but a mop and some disinfectant is the bare minimum. We will never come back here just based on the lack of cleanliness. We won't even be ordering takeout because if that's how they treat the seating area, what are the cleanliness standards in the kitchen? So incredibly disappointing and frankly disgusting. read more

It seems like this establishment thrives on orders from delivery services like Uber Eats and DoorDash. The server sat us at a booth and asked if we were ready to order, but we still needed to look at the menu to decide. I ordered a bento box and everything was tasted good, but there was nothing to write home about. My boyfriend got a beef noodle soup, and felt that the flavor was lacking. I brought my dad here, the noodle aficionado and he also just got back from China, and he even claimed that the Beef Hand-pulled Noodles were pretty decent. The sashimi scallops unfortunately were pretty "fishy" in the aftertaste; I ended up mixing them into the noodles to dilute the taste and eat them that way. I didn't eat in person so can't comment on service or ambiance, but overall based on the food experience I had i wouldn't seek it out again. We came on a Friday evening around 8 PM--wasn't super busy. The space is smaller, but my party of five still sat comfortably. Would love to have given this restaurant five stars, however the service here was not very good. We were seated very quickly, but our table was not approached for almost ten minutes. Aside from our food being brought to us, we did not receive any attention whatsoever by a server--no one to ask us how we were enjoying our meal, no one to pick up our empty dishes to clear out the table, etc. it was very disappointing. The plus side was the food was wonderful. I had an Alaska Roll and the Tonkatsu Ramen. I loved both of my dishes. They tasted fresh, the pork in my ramen was so tender and the broth was so flavorful. I highly recommend it. The restaurant's all-day Happy Hour items are great--there are a variety of different sushi rolls listed at a very cheap price. I was in the mood for some noodles and dumplings and decided to give Xian a try. I tried their other location at The Domain and was not impressed but heard there's a different menu here and decided to give it a try! Xian Sushi and Noodle is located in a strip mall plaza and easy to find. The area looks nice and well maintained until you walk into the restaurant. It's immediately apparent that presentation and decor is not their thing. Half opened boxes of soda, random supplies, and ingredients all stuffed and tucked wherever they can find a space. The place has a hole in the wall feel and looks feels much like an very old outdated american diner space. The food tasted very much like the presentation of their decor. Not much thought put into their dishes and felt like just a bunch of ingredients thrown together without much passion in their cooking. What I ordered: Work Fried Green Beans - This appetizer dish was very good. It came out first and I got excited and looked forward for other dishes to follow. It had the right amount of flavor and crunch to it. It came with lots of sauce but not too salty and tastes fresh. Spicy Chili Wontons - When this dish was brought out, it looked delicious! It was nice and piping hot and the wonton was drenched in the famous chili oil with peanut and cilantro. But sadly the taste was entirely different story. This.....concoction tasted more like an oversized shumai. It's definitely a dramatic deviation from what a spicy chili wonton usually tastes like. The texture of the meat tasted more like a chewy meatball... it definitely wasn't soft as expected. The chili oil was not at all spicy and the sauce is overly tangy which overpowered everything on the plate. Red Braised Beef Noodle Soup - I ordered this with what they call "fettuccine noodles" which is basically the flat wavy kind that is often paired with this famous dish elsewhere. This is served with rich broth, baby bok choy, potato, carrot, pickled vegetables & cilantro. Right off the bat, I noticed the soup was not that hot. It was almost lukewarm and that wasn't a great start. Because the soup was lukewarm, the bok choy was wayyy undercooked and the unnecessary crunch was almost annoying to eat with. The noodles were starchy tasting and didn't have that bounce you'd expect with this famous dish. There were small pieces of beef that was quite tender, but the main one attached to the bone was just super hard and chewy and took an effort for me to swallow. The service however, is fantastic! They were very quick and attentive and even gave me a scissor to cut the noodles when I ask for another bowl to share. There are a lot of options on the menu that I want to try but I'm not coming back. There have been a few noodle and dumpling houses that popped up in the Austin area and their food is authentic and amazing. The landscape for Chinese food in Austin is changing and I'm excited to try the ones that put passion in their work and food! read more

If you've been around Austin, you'll see Xian has multiple franchises scattered throughout. Xian has been on my list for some time. Since I was craving some dim sum, I decided to finally give Xian a try. Like most restaurants since covid, staffing is in shortage. The hostess/waitress will seat you and from there, you can either order traditionally through the waiter, or by scanning the QR code provided at your table. I tried the Shu Mai, Spicy Lobster Dumplings, and Spicy Chili Wontons for my appetizers. The Shu Mai came in a pack of 6 miniature pale dumplings (essentially), and tasted nothing like the classic Shu Mai. As for the Spicy Lobster Dumplings, these were actually stuffed fried wontons topped with sliced jalapeño, fish eggs, and spicy mayo on a bed of guacamole. Edible, but nothing spectacular. Lastly, the Spicy Chili Wontons. The wontons came out looking incredibly promising, but were bland. Something is missing. As to what it is, you'll have to decide that yourself. For my lunch, I decided to order my next favorite thing, the Sushi Lunch, which comes with 5 pieces of assorted sushi, a basic roll of your choice, and either a Miso Soup or Salad. Right when I walked into Xian, I immediately thought the restaurant was a 3 seat place because I didn't notice the short hallway that led to the rest of the restaurant, which was a relief :sweat: We got seated and got menus pretty quickly. My date and I were chatting so we didn't figure out what we wanted for probably 10 minutes. Our waitress checked up on us probably 3-4 times. We ordered the rocky shrimp, spicy tuna roll, yuzu tobiko, and eel sushi. They were all pretty good! The total bill was very wallet-friendly, love the fact that it's basically happy hour all night. The fried wontons under the rocky shrimp was kind of random, but the shrimp was very tasty with that spicy mayo-ish sauce and the sesame. While I do appreciate when a place gives (or offers to give) the check soon after eating, we were still eating the rocky shrimp when they gave us our check and they took my date's chopsticks. I didn't think the restaurant was packed, so I'm not sure why it felt like they were rushing service. Personally, I felt it wasn't a great service experience for a date. I understand there's a balance between checking in too much or too little, but service at Xian leans a tad too close to 'too much'. You'll see me again because the food is actually pretty good, without paying Uchiko prices for sushi, and I'm looking forward to the noodle dishes. I made the mistake of ordering the Thom Yam soup on one of my first visits here, and it was so good that I have tried very few of the other delicious/looking things on the menu. My favorite is a spicy, coconut-based soup, with bean sprouts, strips of red bell pepper, onion, chunks of white meat chicken, and your choice of house-made noodles. My favorite type are called "triangle." The fried Spring Roll appetizer is small but tasty. The Sushi & Sashimi lunch is excellent, according to my lunch companion. I loved the Domain location, and this one is closer so of course I had to try it out. The food is so good and service is friendly enough. Unlike at the Domain location, you can't pick your Noodle type, flavoring, and protein. The Dan Dan Noodles here come with beef so I have to skip it. According to my husband, they're still delicious. While that's disappointing, the stir fry noodles with tofu absolutely come through. Stop by here before popping into the nearby HEB. The parking lot can get really crowded so be careful. The vegetable friend rice is solid. I plan on coming in to order lunch sometime soon. read more

This used to be my all-time favorite noodle spot. I haven't been in a few years and returning was a huge mistake. The noodles no longer look fresh and tasted like cleaning chemicals. The beef looked bizarre, as if it was bloody and coagulated and then frozen. The crab puffs used to be delightful but the "crab" has been massively downgraded. We ordered the Red Braised Beef Noodle Soup and the Dan Dan Noodles. Both were delicious. The noodles are hand made. You can even see the chef in the back pulling the noodles himself. The noodle texture was good and consistent throughout. The one thing that could've been improved with the beef noodle soup is that the meat was a but tough. If I had to guess, it's because after it's done cooking, it stays in the broth until serving. Perhaps a better method is to remove the meat, and keep it in a warm, but not hot broth on the side. Add it to the soup when it's time to serve. The interior is kept clean. There are plenty of tables. This is a pretty solid option if you're craving Chinese noodles. read more
