Food lacked flavor Ahogado dish seems to have been destroyed from cost cutting- pedestrian italian roll and the formerly rich broth reduction tastes like a watery mexican marinara from an italian chain. Did they lose their chef? Flatbread with chorizo lacking any flavor. Place used to be packed, now its deserted. I can see why. Any chicago taqueria now better than this. Meh! Despite the Ricky Bayless notariety, I was not overly impressed. Maybe because I expected more from it than it was or that in passing it always seems to have the appearance of being busy. Either way, nothing I ordered was a drool happy OMG-good, just an only Okay-good taste if that makes any sense. While I typically find short-rib anything to be a solid choice on a menu, here I felt the meat was dry and not at all plentiful inside of 4 mini (3" round) corn tortillas with cole slaw. It cannot štand on its own as a meal and if you are seeking a Taco Tuesday deal, this is not the place. These will run your tab $13.00 The watermelon gaspacho (seasonal) was zesty and refreshing for $8.00. If you are a cold soup person its got a unique flavor and is topped with shrimp and avocado. YELP TIP: its a place you order up at the Cashier, wait for your name to be called to fetch your food kinda spot. Everything is a la carte and no, chips with salsa are not included as is often the case at Mexican inspired restaurants. Will I go again... possibly. I have been waiting forever to try a Rick Bayless restaurant. Today was that day. I got the ahogada. Let me tell you this was FANTASTIC! The bread was fresh and crunchy on the outside, enough to stand up to the spicy tomato broth for dipping. The pork was cooked perfectly with a little crunch on the very outside but oh so tender. I wish there were more pickled veggies on it and maybe a little cheese. Hubby doesn't like pork ( unless it's bacon or sausage...wierd I know) . The only beef really on the menu was the pepito. Thank Goodness he liked it. The chips and salsa are okay. The agua fresca was delish and the Mexican coke in a bottle served ice cold! Can't wait to try Frontera too! read more

We went on a rainy day so we couldn't enjoy the outdoor seating but the indoor atmosphere was cozy and clean. The waiter was very attentive and helpful, taking time to provide recommendations when requested and regularly checked in. We started the meal with probably the best-tasting guacamole and chips I've had. Fresh dip full of flavor and zesty, crunchy chips. I ordered the daily special of the Carne Asada Torta for my meal and the crunch of the bread with the assortment of toppings and quality meat was a combo I'd definitely order again. We finished the meal with some fresh churros and chocolate sauce that were still hot from being just-made. My siblings and I grew up watching One Plate at a Time. Rick introduced us to Mexican cuisine beyond the tacos and burritos that we knew. We admired not just his passion for the food but his love and respect for the culture. Needless to say, a siblings trip to Chicago would not be complete without a stop at one of Rick's restaurants. We made reservations at Frontera because we wanted a full sit down experience. We had a full meal of appetizers, drinks, entrées, and dessert there. As stuffed as we were we couldn't help but head to XOCO for some churros to end the night. While ordering we ended up getting a torta to share as well. The fact that we were so full and yet still enjoyed every last bite of our torta and churros should tell you how good it was. We wish we had more time in the city to have an actual meal here. The "pig" is good but everything else is poor. Do not get the fish taco! If you do you will get 3 of the smallest little finger soft taco possible. You could not make them any smaller. I could not taste the fish it is deep fried. The pig Sandwhich I ordered was also small. The pig meat is good but the bread is stale because the bread is so hard the Sandwhich is ruined. On a positive note the hot sauce that comes to the side is very good. It is very spicy hot. So...if you like hot and spending a lot of money this is your place. 1 Sandwhich and 3 smallest tacos and you will spend 75$ There is a 15 percent tax or tip forced on your meal. Gotta love Rick Bayless and his restaurants. If you've ever been to Tortas Frontera, Xoco is basically like a more upscale version of it, and with enhanced flavors. The dining area is relatively small, but we were fortunate enough to get our order in and get seated right away. My wife ordered their Milanesa torta. For those of you who don't know what "milanesa" is, it's basically like a Mexican version of a breaded steak sandwich from Ricobenes but without the gravy and this one is chicken beef. Not only did this torta look beautiful, it tasted delicious. The bread had a perfect crunch to it and went well with the chicken, black beans and red onions. I ordered their Goat Barbacoa torta. I personally enjoyed this one more than their milanesa. A braised goat, with avocado, onions and cilantro topped with a Oaxacan Pasilla tomatillo salsa. The salsa was spicy but had a such a great flavor to it. Every bite was magically delicious. Definitely some of the best goat I have ever tried. Xoco is definitely a place I will be frequenting more often and will eventually, try everything entree on the menu, including their breakfast entrees. My only regret is being in a rush when we came here, so we weren't able to try their churros. Next time for sure. read more

I have been here several times in the past few years. During the latest visit, I noticed fewer vegetarian / pescetarian options on the menu, which was a slight let down. Also, they've switched to table service so you don't have to wait in line to order. However, with that comes an automatic 15% service charge. It's probably just as well since it's in such a tourist-friendly area of town, and many tourists don't necessarily understand how local gratuities work. What hasn't changed one bit is the food, thank goodness! Rick Bayless' genius carries through with vibrant, well-balanced flavors throughout. We even had a Rick Bayless sighting during one visit! He does own three restaurants on the block, after all. I loved their soups, though they all have meat at present. I do not usually love jicama, but even in Xoco's side salad, it's wonderful - bright and fresh. In fact, that salad is a shining example of simple made wonderful, as it is dressed just right and bursting with flavor. You also can't lose ordering the pozole, tacos, or any other traditional Mexican favorites (assuming you eat meat). The spicy foods are picante as you'll find in Mexico. During my last visit, despite those minor niggles I mentioned, I realized Xoco is at the north end of what is my favorite block in Chicago. Along this stretch you'll find three Bayless masterpieces, amazing donuts (Firecakes) and the only remaining Tiki bar experience in Chicago (Three Dots and a Dash) around back, and a place to peruse and perhaps pick up recreational refreshments with which to partake (Sunnyside Dispensary) across Clark St. Rounding it off is an excellent place to find a bathroom - Starbucks! :) read more

More casual spot compared to his other places but with the same beautiful food with punchy flavors. It's a nice place to sit for a quicker meal and service is great just like all of Rick's spots. read more

After a long morning of travel, I knew Rick Bayless could wipe away my weariness. I was happy to find out Xoco was so close to our hotel and made a beeline straight there. Besides the food, I was really impressed by the ordering process. Yes, it's fast casual, but you also get assigned a table upon walking in so there's no hunting after you order. There's also staff that brings you your food and cleans up when you're done! I ordered the fully dressed guac because how do you say no to guac covered in spicy roasted poblano, chicharrón, grilled onion, smoky bacon, local tomato, queso fresco, and pumpkin seeds. It also came with chips and salsa. I really appreciated how they served this right away while my sandwich was being prepared. I LOVED it and can only imagine how good it would taste paired with one of their alcoholic bevvies after a work day. Instead, I gorged on the complimentary sparkling water. Yum! I went with the ahogada after reading all the reviews. It's a carnitas sandwich with black beans that's soaked in tomato-arbol chile broth. When you order, they ask how spicy you want it. I opted for medium and let me tell you, it certainly packed a punch! Go for mild if you don't like a lot of spice. It was messy to eat since the bread gets soggy and the meat falls out, but the flavors were incredible. It wasn't the cheapest meal for a quick lunch, coming in around $20. These items could've definitely fed both me and a girlfriend though. If I lived in the area, I would probably come here way too often! read more

My love for XOCO will never die(Not anytime soon ..lol). I was hoping to get the weekend special on the Saturday that they used to have, guess they no longer have them anymore. Looks like they are offering indoor dine in as well. I've ordered a to go, and it came out pretty quick. They have outside seating seating set up too. Ordered Pepito, as usual it tasted delicious, Crunchy and juicy as it should be. This is my second time being here, wait time was very bad back then(Before Pandemic) during lunch which is quiet expected. No complaints about the food though, tacos tasted great. Come in with high expectations. Wasn't able to order the chilliquiles as I hoped but that was ok. I ordered the guac with quest fresco and tomato. Also comes with chips and two sides of their salsa. The red was slightly spicy the verde was amazing. This dish was great! I also ordered the spicy chicken churro sandwich. Even though it was kind of gimmicky it was pretty good. Well all know salt and sweet goes well together so this paired well. The pickled red onions and I believe shredded cabbage was also great. The spicy sauce on it was a bit spicy for me but I'm weak. For the normal person it's probably just fine. If you prefer a little spicy either ask for it in the side or to go easy/light on it. Also ordered the pistachio churro which was delicious. In the midst of the pandemic, it is imperative that restaurants have an orderly and smooth takeout system. Unfortunately, Xoco does not have that in place. Ordering for takeout online was not the issue - Xoco uses third party food delivery services to manage takeout orders. The problems arose when I arrived at the restaurant to pick up my order. At the front door of the restaurant is a very small enclosed entryway, about 5 by 6 feet (give or take). It is nearly impossible to social distance in this space. When I went to pick up my order, I was told to wait in this small entryway space for my food to be ready. I do not see why I could not have stood outside or a little bit inside the restaurant (out of the entryway) to allow for better social distancing. In the several minutes I stood waiting for my food, multiple large groups of people (+6 people) shoved their way into this small space. Some of the people were even maskless. I barely had an inch of personal space, let alone 6 feet. It was a very uncomfortable experience. To make matters worse, the way the carry out containers were arranged in the already thin and flimsy paper takeout bag made the handles rip the moment I left the restaurant!! Luckily I was not walking far, but this could have been a disaster if I needed to travel a bit further to reach my destination. The food itself was alright. I am not the most well-versed in Mexican cuisine, but I felt like the pickled onions on my Ahogada Torta were a bit too picked for my taste (and I think I tolerate pickled/sour foods quite well!). I also ordered a churro with chocolate and peanuts, which was also just okay. I think the churro itself was very delicious, but the chocolate overpowered the churro and threw off the balance of the dessert. I felt that the peanuts tasted kind of stale, too. I think that the plain churros are probably a better option. Dining in at Xoco might be an entirely different and better experience, but until they figure out a better system of picking up orders, as well as their packaging, I definitely do not recommend getting takeout here. Also, do not make the mistake of ruining a perfectly good churro with the chocolate sauce and peanuts like I did!! read more

Amazing. We got the short rib sandwich, the chicken tacos, the pork tacos, and the Cubano. All of it was fantastic, with the exception of the cubano, which was way too bacon-y for me. The included salsas were perfect and the authenticity and flavor balance was just right. We topped it off with a few churros which were well worth it. I ordered online but showed up too early, but they made an exception for me and said they'd prepare it ASAP. My food was ready within 10 minutes, which was 15 minutes earlier than originally quoted. My boyfriend and I stopped by here the other day and picked up some food to go since it was close by and had heard good things. However, after getting home and looking over everything, it wasn't the stellar experience we were hoping for, but wasn't terrible. Chips and salsa- 2/5: honestly, we were both a bit surprised by this. First, we had ordered extra salsa with the order, but they only gave us one of each. With that, they were extremely small, along with the chips that came with it. The red and habanero salsa were good, however, the green lacked flavor. Chicken Milanese Torta- 1/5: we got this based on a recommendation and were really disappointed. The slaw that was on the sandwich was very tart, with that, the chicken on the torta was extremely dry, which made the whole thing hard to eat. Gringa Torta: 4/5: Now, this is a seasonal special, however, if you are stopping by I highly recommend getting this one. The pork was cooked very well and everything that came with it was fantastic. Honestly, I would go back for this Torta only. Overall, Xoco is nice to have by and the food is decent, however, I just think we got a bad batch of a few things. Good, fun Mexican food. The seating situation is a little unique, when you first arrive you have to wait in a line to order and while you're in line they'll assign you your table number, which you can only go to after ordering. There are waitstaff but they don't take orders. We ordered a carnitas sandwich, carnitas soup, guacamole, and churros (since everyone else seemed to be ordering the churros). Churros came first for some reason, followed by the guacamole which was small for $7 but good. Maybe 15 minutes later we got our entrees which were good, but not great. There were way too many onions in the carnitas sandwich and the soup was pretty salty. Other then that a good place, perfect for a quick lunch to have fun with a friend but not somewhere I'd go if I was looking for authentic Mexican food. Xoco means "Little Sister" and is the casual outpost in Rick Bayless' Mexican restaurant empire in Chicago. Located around the corner from Frontera Grill, Xoco offers a menu of Mexican street food and is particularly known for its torta sandwiches. To start, the Loaded Guacamole Cobb Salad was built on a base of romaine and arugula topped with guacamole, smoked chicken, roasted poblano peppers, marinated black beans, goat cheese, bacon bits, and pepitas, along with a garlic-lime dressing. All of the components of the salad came together nicely from the creamy guacamole to the acidic goat cheese to the crunchy bacon and pepitas. But the real reason to come to Xoco is for the tortas! The Shrimp a la Diabla was made with a filling of Florida shrimp, melted jack cheese, guacamole, greens, red onion, and black bean spread, all on a crusty baguette-like roll. The sandwich was served with a side of spicy-tangy diabla sauce, which added an acidic, spicy bite to the sandwich. But my favorite torta (and certainly the most uniquely presented sandwich) was the signature Ahogada, which came with a filling of tender carnitas, pickled onions, and black bean spread. The most unique aspect about this sandwich was that the two halves were stood up and served in a tomato-arbol chile broth, which had an intense salty, sour, and spicy flavor that soaked right into the bread. By the number of reviews with an excellent rating I am sure mine will be an unpopular opinion but here goes nothing. First I was not familiar with the ordering and seating routine but that was pretty smooth and the cashiers were super friendly and they get credit and one star for having sparkling water free on tap but that is about where the positives end. I was seated at an extremely dirty high top seat. Napkins, dishes and crumbs all over the counter so basically I had to bus and clean other peoples dirty dishes to sit down. The host obviously saw it as he took me to the seat. I ordered the Baja Chicken Sandwich and chips and salsa. The chips and salsa is where they get one more star it was a huge basket for $3 and two varieties of Salsa. The Baja Chicken Sandwich was a HUGE disappointment which is surprising because the sandwich itself was so SMALL! The cojita cheese was no where to be found, there were maybe 8 little chunks of chicken on the whole sandwich which was smeared with dry crusty black beans and flavorless coleslaw that 100% came from a bag and was not fresh cut. I had to deconstruct the sandwich to even eat it as the bread was seriously rock hard! I have had excellent experiences at the other R. B. establishments next door but my visit to XOCO has left me hungry. read more

SPICY CHICKEN CHURRO SANDWICH!! Went in around dinner time and was surprised there was no wait. Instantly I realized this place does not care about customer service. The hostess was rude. It is not obvious that they only want one person at the host stand at once. After getting yelled at we waited outside for her to call us in. Someone brought us water in a timely manner. Our server came to take our order and we never saw him again until it was time for the bill. We ordered the Fully Dressed Guacamole, Spicy Churro Chicken Sandwich, Spicy Steak-Ramp Aioli Tlayuda, and Churros. The guac came out relatively fast. The guac has great flavor itself. Getting all of the toppings is too much. The churro chicken sandwich was one of the best chicken sandwiches I have had. The spiciness compliments the sweet very nicely. If you do not like spicy food, do not worry, it is less spicy than a McDonald's hot n spicy. If you want a lot of food or something to share, the tlayuda is a great choice. I enjoyed the sandwich so much that I felt I needed more churros. If you do not try the sandwich you should try them out. I recommend getting them with the chocolate. The caramel was kinda gross. Overall, the chicken sandwich is seasonal so if it is on the menu, this place is a must try. read more

This is a order food and go find a seat and the food will be delivered to you kind of place. We stumbled upon this place on our last day of Chicago and I must say I was not disappointed. They are known for their sandwiches so I opted for the daily special sandwich which was carne asada sandwich ($13) which had flank steak, salsa verde, mushroom, and a crema. My bf got the short rib taco ($13) which comes with 3 tacos! It is a braised short rib with spicy tomato salsa, cheese, radish, and avocado. We also got the almost naked guacamole ($7) which you can choose with 2 different toppings. So I chose chicharron and grilled onion. The guac also comes with salsa and chips. For dessert, we tried the pistachio churro. First off, the carne asada torta is the best torta I have ever had!!! They used a baguette bread and the carne asada was cooked to perfection! The crema just tied everything together. I was very pleased with my selection. The short rib taco was alright. I'm not a big fan of braised meat so the taco wasn't to my liking. My bf also thought the taco was alright. The sandwich was still hands down the best. The guac was also very tasty! The grilled onions made it taste better and the chicharron was just a cherry on top. There were also avocado chunks in the guacamole so you know its fresh guacamole. The churro was alright...not really what I was expecting. But I think I just don't like the flavor we chose. I would have to try another flavor next time. Overall, the prices are a bit steep for a lunch meal with that size portion. But the sandwich is totally worth it! Review written during Covid-19; After weeks of postponing a dr appt i put on my mask & gloves and braved the doctor's office. The silver lining to this craziness is that my drive downtown was super quick, there was no wait at the dr & i had plenty of time to grab takeout before headed back to the burbs. i placed an order via the yelp app for xoco. I opted for the new taco red chile vegetable tacos and chips and salsa. I decided that the only way to get thru these days is to eat chips all day long and this day was no exception. i pulled up to the restaurant & called to let them know i was outside to pick up the order. i've been doing a lot of curbside pickup the past 2 months and this experience paled in comparison to the others. It took a few calls before they picked up their phone. Then a woman came to my car to let me know she couldn't find my order. She returned a few min later with my actual order - whoo hoo. At this point i had jumped on a work call and stayed in my parking spot a few minutes to finish it. During my work call she came back twice to let me know she forgot to give me 2 things. i didn't pay too much attention and assumed it was chips, but when i got home realized she had come back to give me churros & chocolate sauce that I hadn't ordered, but it appeared that someone named Ashley did. My apologies to Ashley, but my kids sure did love those churros. The tacos were pretty fabulous (awesome new addition to the menu) & made up for the chaos of curbside pickup. And now that i consider myself a chip expert i have to say that xoco makes a delicious chip & salsa. i can't wait until i'm working again downtown and get to eat here regularly again, but this was a nice treat in the meantime. read more

This review is for delivery during COVID via Caviar/ Door Dash all the way from Xoco to the Lincoln Park/ Lakeview area (~20 minute drive away). Kinda pricey for delivery, but thankfully we had a really good Caviar coupon to help offset the costs. Most of the food arrived warm. The items we ordered that that traveled well: - Pepito Torta: a little greasy, but amazingly delicious and packed with meat. The melted artisan jack cheese, black beans, caramelized onions, and pickled jalapenos all went so well together. It comes with salsa if you want to add some flavor, but it's not necessary as the sandwich is delicious on its own. - Tortilla soup: very Rick Bayless item, the soup is so smokey and flavor is deep, not like any tortilla soup I've had before. The garnishes come in a separate container, so you can portion and re-heat the soup without worrying about soggy tortilla strips. - Carnitas tacos: hard to tell from the picture, but it comes with 4 tacos! They appear small upon arrival, but they are packed with meat and also come with fresh lime slices for squeezing. - Churros: obviously they're not going to be 100% fresh, but we popped them into the toaster oven to reheat for 5 minutes and they crisped up enough to feel almost freshly made. Add the home-made chocolate shot, it's so good for dipping! Would NOT recommend the seasonal special "Perfect Fall Tlayuda". It did NOT look like it's picture. Instead it was very dry and confusing. It's a wood-fired corn masa tostada with slow-cooked duck carnitas, maple-roasted butternut, kalettes, two cheeses (Jack & añejo), salsa roja, black bean spread.
