The food was amazing, genuinely the best chilaquiles I've ever had! The service on the other hand was a little strange. At one point, maybe 5 minutes after we got our food 2 servers watched us eat over half of our meal, while standing only 3 feet away from our table directly in the middle of the dining room. I haven't had chilaquiles this good since i had some amazing food in Santa Fe years ago. If your tastes run to spicy(which to be honest is not my go to for breakfast) this is the place if your in the downtown area. Lovingly decorated, somewhat chill (I did find a bit of over eagerness to clear my table) this is great casual vibe to check out before venturing to Grant Park or Navy Pier. I had chilaquiles rojos with over easy eggs and a side order of pancakes. The chilaquiles came with an ample amount of choriza and the combination of fried tortillas, beans, sour cream and eggs it was very tasty with a heat level of 6 or 7 without having to add hot sauce. The pancakes while not the best, you go up the street to Wildberry for that, were solid so if you want more of an American breakfast, they have you covered me too But the thing I appreciated most of his place is I felt a bit removed l, almost tranported directly to Mexico. read more

The food at La Catedral was very good, and the atmosphere was beautiful and lively. However, the service could definitely be improved. When I arrived, the hostess barely acknowledged me, and after I was seated and placed my order, no one came back to check if I needed anything else. A couple of things to know: be careful with the Chilaquiles Diablos--they are very spicy! And if you order a large coffee, be prepared--it's HUGE! The cafe de olla is ok. After reading good reviews, I gave La Catedral a try for breakfast on a Friday morning around 9am. The place was mostly empty, so we were seated right away and were given the option of a table or booth; we chose the latter. Right away, one of the waiters brought over waters and a napkin and fork (no knife). We had another server come by (I believe her name was Alexandra, based on our receipt), and she was grouchy from the get go. We ordered two coffees (a decaf and a cafe de olla), one of which she delivered a few minutes later but didn't explain which of the two coffees it was. It wasn't until the second coffee was delivered that the server (a different one) told us which one that was. Known for their chilaquiles, I couldn't make up my mind because there were two columns of options. One thing I knew, though, is that I wanted an option that came with eggs since it was breakfast time. Our waitress explained that all the ones on the left column came with eggs, so that's where I focused. I opted for the Molcajete chilaquiles ($16.99) and my partner got the chilaquiles torta ($16.50). When our food came out, my chilaquiles didn't have eggs, so I had to order a side of eggs ($3.99)--from another server because the waitress never came back. That's the one thing I asked her about and she misinformed me. (After we placed our food order, she never came by again, instead we had a separate waiter who was super nice and checked in on us a couple times during our visit.) Overall, the food was okay. Nothing spectacular. The torta was large but it was mostly bread and not chilaquiles, eggs, or beans, which is what it was stuffed with. If we had to do it again, we'd probably share a chilaquiles option and order an entree or something else to share. As noted in other reviews, the menus they hand you don't have prices on them, so you have to scan a QR code to see the menu online with prices. To me, that's a bit shady. It doesn't help that cell service in the restaurant isn't strong (one bar of 5G), so you have to connect to their WiFi to see prices. I also had to ask for a knife because the only utensil they give you is a fork (that went for all tables). Strange. The decor was very authentic and the music was on point. Had the food and service been better, I would've given my visit more stars. Unfortunately, I'd rather check out another Mexican restaurant before visiting this location or one of the other three they have. read more

Long wait times and you are not allowed to break up your party. It was a nice day and we sat outside and then walked over to the park while we waited. It was nice to see where we were on the waitlist. I do wish we could've broken it up due to people needing to leave earlier than others. Once seated it was quick. We didn't wait very long for our food to come out. Some portions are huge! A large drink is enough for two people at least. My plate of chilaquiles was also huge! And it came with chicken, which I didn't see so I added eggs. Very filling. No rice needed but it comes with it already. This location was very convenient from work! This day we had a reservation for 17 people . We did a birthday celebration for our coworkers and our department decided to do a brunch here! The food was amazing every single person at the table enjoyed their food! Also the drinks were really good! Everyone had different kind of drinks. The restaurant is known for their chilaquiles and most of the people got it but just in different ways. The location is pretty big inside for it to be a downtown restaurant. Came here bright, and early on my last day in Chicago before we did all the touristy stuff it wasn't too busy. Parking was easy and that was a highlight. We ordered the rancheros chilaquiles as well as a regular breakfast for my husband. I tried their special coffee and a fresh squeeze orange juice. Everything had good flavors. I wasn't a big fan of the coffee, but it can definitely be something for other people. Overall food came out really quickly. Nothing was missing. Walked in on a Sunday for brunch (no reservation) and was pleasantly surprised to be seated right away even though they were busy. Obviously being called "La Catedral", they've got the religious theme going with the inside decor. Menu was enormous but I did not like that they don't list prices - I feel that helps customers be able to make informed decisions. Seems like they are known for their chilaquiles, so maybe I got the wrong thing but I was in the mood for French toast so went with the "churro con canela" and it was way too sweet for me - just drowning in pastry cream. To wash it down, I tried the iced mexchata which was also way too sweet for me. This is a personal preference, some people love sugary food and drink but just warning those who don't to maybe stick to a regular coffee or savory dishes. The French toast ended up being ~$16 and the drink was ~$6. Service was very spotty. It doesn't seem like servers are assigned tables but rather everyone helps out different tables in the same area. Our waiter dropped off our food and never came back so we finally flagged down a different waitress who cashed us out. Everyone was friendly though. My fiance and I came here around 10 on a Saturday. To our surprise, it wasn't very busy. We were quickly greeted and seated. The restaurant is spacious and has a cathedral theme. It's a nice place for a casual breakfast/brunch. The workers are very friendly and efficient. Multiple servers came to check on us throughout our breakfast. To drink, we ordered iced cafe de ollas. They were perfectly sweet and had a subtle cinnamon flavor. We ordered the ranchero chilaquiles and torta especial. The portions were HUGE and the food was delicious!! The torta was sooo good. The pork had plenty of sauce and a nice little kick. Everything tasted great individually, and even better all together. The fries were also perfectly crisp! The chilaquiles were equally as good. We found this spot after trying to look for brunch spots in the area during a trip. The atmosphere was so cute and very well fitting for the name of the restaurant. I had a difficult time ordering, because I wanted to taste a bit of everything. Half the table ordered cafe de olla (hot) and it comes in a huge mug. You can also order it as an iced coffee. I ordered the iced coffee with horchata in it and it was very good and sweet. Some people ordered fresh squeezed juice which came in what appeared to be a souvenir cups. All of our meals came out as they were ready and everything looked amazing. My meals had flavor, was authentic and was amazing. The best breakfast spot in the area. After many disappointing experiences and long waits at other places that were highly rated, we checked out La Catedral and it exceeded our expectations. Everything was delicious and fresh. Service was super prompt and friendly. They have a big menu and we chose to go with the chilaquiles rojos, vegetable omelet and kids pancakes. The portions are big! They add sides that are pretty big as well. The prices are very reasonable. The ambiance was great - spacious, good AC for a hot summer day, and nice Mexican style decor. I ran here to write a review! I'm not a big breakfast eater, so when I choose to get breakfast, it HAS to be good! La Catedral did not disappoint. I ordered to-go because we were heading to the airport that morning. The service was friendly, and our food came out hot and fresh. While I waited, I could see the dining areas, and they were bright, clean, and accommodating (large booths, etc.) I got the chilaquiles verdes (and added stewed chicken), and it was spectacular! My egg was cooked perfectly (over medium), the beans were perfection, and the level of spice was perfection. I also grabbed a coffee with cream and vanilla, and it was delicious. I'm not a fancy coffee girlie...I just like a solid cup o' Joe. This hit the spot! Avoid the wait and the crowds elsewhere. The parking situation is not good but the #60 CTA bus stops right in front! I've been to several of their locations before so I knew what I was getting as far as the food goes. My go to picks are the chilaquiles poblanos and the cafe de olla, both are delicious! Since hearing about the new location downtown, I wanted to come out and show some support. I quickly realized I wasn't going to find street parking nearby. There are only a few spots available across street. There is a paid parking garage that appears is mostly for residents of the building, but also has a limited number of pay spots. Absolutely DELICIOUS unexpected gem. I came to Chicago for work and this place popped up for Mexican food options in Uber eats and I'm SO glad it did. I wish I could visit in person, but having such delicious home made food delivered to my hotel helped make me less home sick. I had the chilaquiles and the breakfast quesadilla on separate days (I also have a torta waiting in my personal item to eat at the airport) and they're ALL so fragrant, fresh, tasty, and HUGE portions! Even the bag it came in was lovely, and I'm actually taking it home with me, the little picture of their shop on it is so homey and designed very lovely. The Ambiance is gorgeous. Staff is very nice and accommodating. Food was delicious!! The rojos chilaquiles was actually really spicy. 3 out of 5 chilis on the hot meter might be a 5 out of 5 for the less spice-tolerant. The verde chilaquiles was yummy too, less spicy. I can't profess to be an expert at chilaquiles, but this was a tasty one this morning. A friend and I both chose the mole and chicken version, but it looked like they had at least 12-14 different versions of chilaquiles. Sizable order, with a tasty rich mole sauce. I'm used to just getting eggs on the chilaquiles without asking but here, you have to ask for them. I chose over easy, and loved that combo. I asked if I could do an horchata latte because they had espresso and horchata. I may not have explained it well--they separately brought the espresso and the horchata and I poured one into the other--but it was still tasty. Didn't even know they were part of a chain. Wow! This epic place deserves far more than five stars. The decor nods to an old school cathedral vibe (hence the name) but feels bright, fresh, and clean. The menu is full of classic Mexican options that all look divine. We both tried versions of the chilaquiles and a plate of Enfijoladas La Caterdal. The flavors were authentic and left us craving more. You can really taste how "home made" the food was. From the tortillas to the beans, they take pride in representing what I can only assume is a family recipe that is generations old. The service was on point, with the staff clearly communicating amongst each other, the timing on plates was perfect.
