This has been my to-go place when I have friends visiting from out of town or whenever I'm in the Boyle Heights area (even long before all the deserved press and media attention they've received...and I come in from the Pomona area sometimes *just* for Xtiosu). I love Lebanese and Oaxacan food in general, and the fusion items here are excellent combinations. Yoooooooooooo! The food is straight fire parking is trash and wait is a little long from what I expected but food was on point! I happened to go twice on back to back days for lunch midweek. I was told everything is vegan except the meat products and they did not disappoint! Here's what I got both times: 1. Cauliflower tacos: tortillas cooked to perfection with the perfect cook on the cauliflower so they had crunch; matched with the pickled onions on top and sauce to set it completely off 2. Falafel tacos: again with perfect corn tortillas and crispy falafel that wasn't greasy or stingy; same perfectly pickled onions and sauce. There's also a red salsa that comes with the tacos that I would drink (if they didn't charge for extras) 3. Papas preparadas: perfectly crisp and seasoned potatoes with a citrus pop that I could eat all day long 4. Oaxacan hummus: so it comes with a pita that's warm and inviting, and matches perfectly with the black bean hummus 5. Fresca: had a mint one first day and pineapple one the next; just simple and exactly what you think you are getting in a good fresca Pricing is a touch higher than you might expect for this hole in the wall but then again, kind of expected because it's not a chain. 4 tacos, potatoes, hummus, and 2 drinks was about $55, but you can see prices on the menu pictures. I thought the food overall was pretty good. We tried the a chicken kabob plate and we also got a chicken shawarma plate with a side of fried cauliflower. I thought the food was good, its made to order (so you're gonna have to wait a bit to get your food (they tell you this when you order, so no surprises, it's not fast food.) The food quality was good. But to me, it was mostly just Mediterranean, not sure where the Oaxcan part kicks in besides the red salsa that came with the plates. The Fried cauliflower was over cooked a bit, it came out limp, would've been better crispy. The ambiance is..... Alfresco haha, the actually just have some like round backyard patio tables with umbrellas, so don't expect like white table cloth and a maitre'd. I'd come back to try some other stuff. read more

Gotta love a hidden gem in Boyle Heights! Mediterranean food with some Oaxaca influence. It's always from Cesar Chavez so it's not as busy. We ordered the combo plate, falafel, fried cauliflower and babaganoush. Everything was so delicious! Salad, rice and grilled meats were fresh and flavorful, comparable to any good Mediterranean spot. The falafel was crispy and moist, I couldn't figure out what they mixed the chickpea with, maybe black beans? It tastes different than your usual green falafel but the texture and crunch are perfect. They offer chorizo as a grilled meat and black bean hummus, both are very tasty. The babaganoush is a must! Nice and smoky. Everything is served with a side of green and red house made salsa. Wow! If you don't have a reason to come to Boyle Heights, now you do. Let this be your new lunch break and it's completely worth it! It is located in a small plaza with limited parking, but there is street parking! I came here around 4pm on a Friday and there was no line. I happily got a chicken kabob plate with a chicken shawarma taco. It was so GOOD and I love all the flavors in this plate. Prices are fair and reasonable and I know this location has won several prizes and notable mentions... more reason to come visit! The owners here are very friendly and I had a great experience here. It's absolutely baffled me that in Los Angeles of all places the Mediterranean/Mexican fusion concept hasn't taken off to a more prominent degree. Mid East Tacos is killing it at Smorgasburg every Sunday, and it's good to see less known players like Xtiosu Kitchen make their impact as well. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Xtiosu Kitchen isn't at all fancy, but it's comfortable enough and the food comes out quick. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $1.50 each for what can only be considered specialty tacos is a great deal plain and simple; and $6.50 got me a mountain of hummus on the side with some pita bread to compliment. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? The Chicken Schwarma and Cauliflower tacos here at Xtiosu were both good, and they were made all the better with the excellent hummus that I essentially used as taco dipping sauce. I could have done with less onions on the cauliflower tacos, but I'll make that clear next time. Great concept. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? The place with its few tables outside only is very cute - in contrast to the surroundings, but that can't suffice?!? Can it??? The competition among a good number of Mediterranean restaurants (fast or "slow"food) has become rather stiff. Just having an average salad with a countable number of cucumbers and tomato pieces does not do it. And the falafel burrito was not too bad either, but quite honestly the pita for the wrap was rather burned and the charcoaled outside did not enhance the inside all that well. It's like two of my favorite cuisines got together and had a love child! A perfect mesh of Mexican and Lebenese with some American mixed in. For starters, you'll have to be ok with sitting outside because there is no indoor seating. It's located in a small shop inside of a tiny strip mall in East LA. I ordered two cauliflower tacos, two chicken tacos, and a kabob "burrito". Each item had a Middle Eastern flair such as pickled turnip or garlic sauce. What I really enjoyed was the salsa and I was able to speak to the owner who actually told me the chilies he used (super nice guy). This place is out of this world! Their falafels are literally the best falafels I've get had in my life. Super crispy, light, and very flavorful. The food here is spectacular, although in fairness my wife and I always get the same thing because they're so good (the falafel burrito, the chicken shawarma plate, and the papas preparadas). We've never had a bad meal and it's not expensive; worth well more than what you'll be paying. Really good food! We had the vegan falafel tacos, cauliflower, chicken taco, and chorizo plate. The Oaxacan hummus was delish! Nice twist on regular hummus. The chorizo was also very good very much like a Argentinian chorizo with a nice kick. Rice was good. Said a little old but it was edible. The vegan falafel taco was our favorite really nice flavors. Hijo de la.... Woah! This must be destiny because we searched for the "closest" Mediterranean spot and viola! Boyle Heights...Really??? Um pues. First off, thanks the Mechele(Grubhub) for the fastest delivery in my Yelp life. I should have tipped more that 20% just for that! Ordered 15 minutes before they closed, food arrived in a little more than 20 minutes. Hot, stacked and ready to go! Food is absolutely amazing. The chicken, steak, chorizo and falafel were perfect. My only complaint is that the burrito(wrap) should be double wrapped because it was squirting out my hands and I devoured this beast of a wrap. These dudes know how to make great food. A mix of my native bloods(greek and mexican) this is definitely our new spot. Sorry no photos because who has the patience to take a pic when your starstruck. It's a little corner hole in the wall (literally you order from a window and they give you your food from that window) that may look closed but it's worth you stopping and eating here. Food is great. I order the sampler (beef/chicken/chorizo), rice, salad and humus. Oh man was this good and filling. You eat out doors and it was great. Highly recommend this place. This place deserves a 4 stars because the quality of food and customer service; not specifically for flavors. Overall, this place can be considered the best (aka most convenient) mediterranean food in the surrounding area of East Los because of the authentic fusion between oaxaca and mediterranean variations (or you can drive a little further to Spitz in Little Tokyo). First, the business hours have been updated! In terms of food, the potatoes were very overpowering due to the excessive lemon sauce. It wasn't very appetizing so I only had a few bites (the portion was huge). And I love potatoes, so this was quite disappointing. The chicken shawarma tacos ($1.25) were pretty flavorful, but there wasn't anything that blew me away. If you're a chicken lover, then I recommend you try these chicken tacos because the plate, which consisted of steak, spicy chorizo, and grilled chicken with pita, hummus, and salad were just mediocre. I applaud the seasoning on the beef and spicy chorizo, but the chicken lacked flavors compared to the chicken shawarma tacos. I don't think I'll be coming back here again, especially if I'm craving mediterranean food. Service is great compared to the shady location of this business though! Eating at X'tiosu felt like we were in a Mexican/Mediterranean mashup oasis. A delicious mix of culinary options that are not generally found on the same menu. It just so happens that these are two of my favorite food traditions. X'tiosu, translates as "thank you" in Zapotec. After tasting their wonderful dishes I am certainly thankful. After a quick review of their menu at the walk up counter we ordered the Chicken Kabob, the Fried Cauliflower and Pita, and the Hummus. The chicken kabob came with rice, lebanese salad, and hummus. The chicken was tender and cooked to perfection. The spice combination was special and the accompanying pilaf was a wonderful compliment to this dish. It was light, moist, and very flavorful. The salad was also very tasty. The cauliflower came with an arabesque salsa which carried a spicy bite to it. The cauliflower was ideally cooked retaining a delightful crisp quality. Finally, the hummus was a perfect consistency and had a wonderful flavor. The dining area is an open air patio with several tables covered by colorful umbrellas. There are other items on the menu that we will certainly order on our next visit including the Zapotec Vegan Taco with falafel and the Chicken Shawarma Taco. Growing up I didn't really like nopales, but this place re-introduced me to them with their nopales tabbouleh, which is now my favorite tabbouleh anywhere! I phoned my order ahead for the chicken shawarma tacos, fried cauliflower, and papas preparadas. Fifteen minutes later, my order was waiting for me. Located in a tiny strip mall, this unassuming restaurant is essentially an ordering window and a couple of patio tables in a parking space. The gentleman behind the counter was holding an iPad with a Square reader, so credit cards are now accepted. While I was being rung up, I added babaganoush on impulse and I'm so glad I did. The chicken was Oaxacan spice-rubbed and spit-roasted in typical Greek fashion. The perfectly cooked cubes of potatoes were some lemony/garlic addictiveness. Equally amazing was the fried cauliflower dish. They weren't fried to a crisp, but resembled more of deeply roasted cauliflower. The dipping sauce that accompanied this dish sent them over the top. Ordered the chicken shawarma plate. I ordered to go on a Wednesday around 4 pm, and was met by an unpleasant smell when I opened my container. The chicken smelled and tasted bad, like the chicken was old, not spoiled, but far from fresh. I have eaten at countless Mediterranean restaurants and the seasoning on the chicken was unlike anything I've had, and not in a good way. I had a few bites of the chicken and just could not stomach anymore. Had I eaten there, I would have requested my money back. The hummus, salad and garlic paste were tasty, so perhaps other items like the Falafel Plate are better choices. I was pretty disappointed with my food overall since the star of the dish was so terrible. I won't be going back and wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Our first time trying this spot today. Absolutely delicious food. We came from 30 minutes away so we placed our order over the phone and it was not a problem. We got a couple of the chicken kabob plates and four shawarma tacos to try and boy oh boy we are so glad we did, they were out of this world delicious and our new favorite!
