Wanted to go here for quite some time now... So we had a room reserved for us. If you don't have a private room I believe there is a cover charge to stay in the main room. The private room was nice, however the music selection could've been more diverse. We were told there is a minimum of $400 to spend. So myself and a couple of friends booked a karaoke room for 2 hours. Just a couple things before we even got to the restaurant: we were informed that it was a 300 dollar minimum with mandatory bottle service and 40 dollars per hour to reserve the room. Sure no problem, it was a birthday after all. We got one of the cheapest bottle services which was 195 for a bottle of Bacardi Rum, food was okay, the rib eye steak yakitori was not very fresh, it had that aftertaste of steak that is past its prime. Most of the food was okay, service was good. Song selection at the karaoke machine was baaad. Lots of famous songs and artists not even on there so we just made due. At 2 hours they practically threw us out. They had taken the bottlecap for the booze meaning we couldnt even take our disappointingly expensive bottle with us. My overall feeling is that this place is a rip off as far as private karaoke goes. I totally get needing to have rules to keep people from trashing your stuff but overall it was not worth the exorbidant cost, poor song selection, and all of the other hoops they make you jump through. If you're just going to the bar or to eat its probably fine. Look somewhere else for karaoke. read more

Honestly it's become a joke. A joke in the sense that the service is so fun it's ridiculous. Tonight we had Chu. He was once again phenomenal. I do not understand what has happened since COVID but let me tell you the servers they have acquired are just top notch. Yakitori Boy is bomb! Ducked in here to avoid torrential downpours only to find one of the best happy hours I've ever had. So good I came back three days in a row! Don't sleep on this spot. The spicy ramen is on point. So are the "tacos" and chef's sashimi. The wasabi beef skewers are tender and juicy with the flavor of wasabi but not the heat, so you can do like I did and make a mix of soy sauce and wasabi and give them skewers a little bath. This place is definitely highly trafficked so I decided to give it a try and went during happy hour. During happy hour, they have $1 skewers, and I got to try most of them. I also ordered the Rocket Roll ($13), Tiger Roll ($12), Ika Yaki (whole grilled octopus), and Lobster Two Ways ($35). So in terms of the skewers, I tried all of them besides the vegetable ones and the quail egg. For the most part, they were adequately seasoned and not too dry (which is the common complaint about yakitori). The Rocket Roll was pretty good, but the kiwi sauce made it taste a bit weird. The Tiger Roll was a solid roll, and the octopus was good as well. The Lobster Two Ways was the star of the meal. I never had lobster tail sashimi before, and it tasted quite pleasant. The lobster udon noodle soup tasted as expected with a good amount of lobster in it. Overall, I would say that this is a good place to drink and eat at with fair prices. The private karaoke room was just ok. The room for 8 people was too small, would be more comfortable for 5-6 people. Not sure if they let you control the temperature or they do it themselves but it was very cold in there. Rude staff, kicked us out exactly at 2am while other rooms and the bar still were full of people. My friend forgot her perfume, which was an expensive birthday gift for her that night, we called the very next morning and they claimed not to have found anything. Bathrooms definitely need more attention, 2 stalls in the ladies and both were out of toilet paper. Overall we had fun because we were in good company but for what they charge the staff should be better trained about customer service. read more

We ordered takeout from here, and I got one salmon roll and two orders of salmon nigiri. I misread the menu and was expecting 4 pieces of nigiri as most a la carte is by 2 pieces now, but that was a mistake on my part so I got 2 pieces of nigiri. Okay that's fine. But I'm expecting pretty decent salmon for $4 per sushi. Especially when you can get 2pc for $4-6 anywhere else in the city. Salmon roll was $7 which I've straight up just never even heard of. But hey--I looked at the menu, and I knew the prices before so you price your food how you want to! But I was expecting better and fresher fish for that price. Salmon roll was a mess. Rice was very warm so the roll was hot, which was unpleasant. Fish to rice ratio for the nigiri was very disappointing. And quality of fish was as well. We're in hard times so price your food how you want, but I did not feel that the dish I received met even half of my expectation for that price point :( read more

Raise your hand if you knew Yakitori Boy was actually a restaurant and not just a karaoke bar.... bc I literally had no idea. I thought the downstairs was just a small bar where people go to pregame before karaoke upstairs. I've been to karaoke a few times, and the last time I got some skewers, which were like $1 at the time we were there, and they were quite tasty. I wasn't sure if the alcohol made them taste so good or whether it was actually good. Rest assured after tonight's meal, I can safely say they are, indeed, good. We enjoyed a nice spread. Everything is tapas style so small and meant for sharing. The sushi rolls come with 4 pieces, even though the menu depicts 3. We were pleasantly surprised with the yummy squid salad, which wasn't overly chewy at all. We also enjoyed all of our sushi rolls and skewers. They had a lamb skewer special as well. Everything tasted fresh, and it felt like I was eating food from my go-to Japanese restaurant, not a restaurant I didn't even know existed. They also have a variety of sake as well. We rented a 12 person room out for a birthday party and for the price we were really disappointed with the karaoke system. Their song catalog was pretty lacking. I would say 90% of the songs we were looking for were not available. ( mind you these were some very popular older songs. I never experienced a karaoke bar catalog NOT having these songs. The sound system was terrible, half the songs you couldn't even hear the music in the background. The system froze up a few times as well. All and all, we enjoyed the staff and the service , but for the price for the room and not being able to sing any songs we were really looking for it wasn't worth it. Tried many dishes, and strongly recommend lobster two ways (lobster sashimi and lobster udon soup). Love their okonomiyaki, main reason why I decide to come here! Very flavorful with many toppings! I am very disappointed with Takoyaki, it is dome shape, rather than ball shape, and only mayo sauce on top without any other toppings, portion too small and can't taste the squid inside. Visiting from the DMV Very cute spot located in China Town. We started with late Thursday night (10:45pm) reservations. As soon as we checked in, the hostess informed us that the kitchen closed at 11:30. We were seated at a very cute little table for two. They have karaoke rooms and lounges on the second and third level but we came specifically for dinner. We went with two Spicy Crab Roll sushis and the Lamb Chops as our choice of meal. The Sushi was great. Hints why we ordered two. The lamp chops has a "Korean BBQ" flavored sauce. Came out at a great temperature. I loved that our food came out amazing even with a late reservation. We started with some "Japas" aka Japanese tapas!! We enjoyed agedaahi tofu and edamame, then moved on to "Yaikatori" aka skewers. We had they shrimp and shishito, and both were wonderful! The starter that really stole the show however, were the brussels! They were INSANE! Hands down, the bet I've ever had!! My husband and youngest who aren't fans normally, LOVED these!! The kiddos had simple avocado and green rolls, while hubs and I dove into some specialty rolls that were outrageous! The 'He Roll' has scorched scallops that gave it an unexpected smokey flavor. The 'Rocket Roll' featured cold lobster salad atop salmon with sweet apple that balanced the wasabi tobiko so well! It was wrapped with black sesame soy paper. So neat! We also split the whole grilled bronzini, which is actually a pike fish, and was a steal at just $18! We finished, or shall I say, the kids finished the meal with tempura ice cream. They devoured it before we could grab a bite! The mochi flight is what's up for us next time, oh, and the lobster two ways!! Yaaaassss! I've been here many times for happy hours and karaoke, but this is the first time I sat down for a full dinner. Let me break it down for y'all: KARAOKE (5/5) Karaoke takes place upstairs. You can either book a private room or pay a few bucks to sing a song at the public bar area. The rooms are totally worth it if you go with a group. They have a deal for the rooms that if you spend $60 per hour on food and drinks, the room's free! HAPPY HOUR (5/5) $6 cocktails and a bunch of deals on food. I love their lychee cocktail, they make some interesting (and tasty) drinks. Come with a friend, a group, or by yourself, you really can't go wrong with the happy hour here. DINNER (4/5) The menu contains a wide selection of Japanese cuisine. I really enjoy the dim sum/tapas style where the majority of the menu consists of small plates. If you're not into that (tho why not?!), they offer full entrees as well. The karrubi short rib and rib eye skewers were very tender and the sushi was solid. I wasn't impressed with the vegetable dumplings though (they weren't sealed properly so the filling kept falling out) or the onigiri. FYI the onigiri is seared all around and doesn't have a filling. The crispy rice was nice but not worth the wait, which the waitress said was normally around 10 mins. Unfortunately, it was closer to 25 and we were almost finished with our meal by then. Suggestion: I wonder if the onigiri would be better as a crispy rice pancake rather than a rice ball. A filling-less onigiri is just kinda sad and having it in pancake form would tremendously decrease the cook time. Just a thought! read more

The broth for the soba is so flavorful- I felt like the place has improved much better than the last time I went. My favorite skewers are the sausage, bacon/quail egg, and pork belly. My partner and I came here for dinner on a Tuesday and to my surprise it was packed but thank goodness we had a reservation. We were seated immediately and just as soon as we put in our order we were given our food! We ate a bunch of stuff: - Takoyaki: I'm not the biggest fan of takoyaki but my partner enjoys them and really enjoyed them ... and to my surprise I loved them too! - Soft Shell Crab Tempura: we thought the portion for this would be larger and we both agreed that it wasn't flavored really but the dipping sauce was dope - Spider Roll: This roll has soft shell crab and this was definitely better than the soft shell crab tempura -- super flavorful with both ends topped with full pieces of crab - Pork Katsudon: there wasn't really anything too special about the pork katsudon because it was simply pork katsu over rice without any additional sauces of flavoring - Skewers: what you DO NOT want to get is the pork sausage skewers because they are literally hot dogs on a stick ... but what you DO want to get are the chicken scallion skewers because they slap with their flavor! (the pork belly was also a good choice) Overall Yakitori Boy is an ideal place ~vibes~ wise. It gives a fancy but underground feel but just needs to step up on its food. I would LOVE to come back during a Friday or Saturday night to see how karaoke is at the bar! I think Philadelphia's Yakitori Boy is probably best known for their eclectic Karaoke bar, which immediately greets you upon entrance, but it also features a restaurant which can do a lot right, but gets lost in doing...a lot. My wife and I stopped by on Monday night for a quick dinner after a long weekend and enjoyed the "japas" (Japanese tapas, we believe) style food. Pros: The appetizer options were excellent. On recommendation of our server, we tried the okonimi yaki and Ika yaki, both seafood dishes which we found perfectly cooked and delicious. The Okonimi Yaki, in particular was a seafood "pancake" of sorts, which featured, I think, a light rice noodle topping and a delicious tomato-based, but light, sauce, which really complimented the fish well. The Ika Yaki (squid), while maybe not the most flavorful, was some of the best cooked squid I've ever had. We also tried the Kaki fried (fried oysters), which was delicious - as fried oysters, and fairly fresh, how could it not be. The skewers or "yakitori" of the namesake were enjoyable but overwhelming. There were a million options, ranging from the "on special" lamb or more simply short rib, pork belly or chicken, to the more "exotic" (for us) smelt, chicken liver (and a number or organs), quail eggs and a number of well-seasoned vegetables in between. We tried a number of options on our servers recommendation and were not disappointed. In particular, the chicken skin, a popular option, was enjoyable. The seasoning of the various red meats made the somewhat indistinguishable, however. We also found the seafood fresh and delicious. Our Sushi was well prepared and tasted fresh. In particular, the on-special "meteor roll" was delightful and honestly, really big. It's worth noting that service here was excellent. Our server, a gentleman with glasses, was quick to respond to us, take our order, make recommendations, bring drinks and other items and provide generally great service. We also found him really friendly and knowledgeable about the otherwise overwhelming menu (see below). He was great! Cons: When we entered, we were greeted with a powerful cleaning smell - my wife, a restaurant veteran, said it was from the dishwasher. The kitchen is somewhat open to the seating area and I think that contributes to it. Given how late this place is open, I also thinking the extra cleaning is probably necessary to, uh, clean up after some late night crowds. The menu is incredibly overwhelming. Another group, I think on business, was far more aggressive in demanding help, but if there's one problem with the menu and service, it's that it's incredibly difficult to navigate and inaccessible to regular folks. I would suggest either offering a price fixe menu option or a variety of "prepackaged" menu choices so that people can order 1-3 selections off the menu and be done. Our server was accommodating, but even he seemed somewhat t a loss in leading us and the poor server handling the (honestly, super rude) group behind us was similarly struggling. Even just some guidance on "we recommend 5 skewers per person" or similar would be great! The ambiance for dinner was somewhat standard for a slightly upscale Asian experience, but other parts lacked that upscale quality, including over-lacquered tables that were maybe a bit sticky. The place could use a decent clean-up downstairs. The price was perhaps a bit high. Beers and cocktails were on par with the area, and the happy hour options were cheap (we think, bar only, though) which is a great deal. We did order some fish, but somehow produced a tab that was perhaps an order higher than we were expecting. It's worth noting that the fish tasted incredibly fresh and to some extent that's worthwhile. Again, ordering the menu more efficiently may help. Other notes: We were somewhat ambivalent to dessert but tried the "Creme Brulee Cake." Creme Brulee is a cheap, otherwise easy to duplicate dessert that many restaurants can and should offer because it's easy to have on hand (frozen). My wife and I are also suckers for it! Yakitori Boy's was no different, but the "cake" form was essentially a cheesecake of creme brulee we found delightful and included a thick graham cracker crust that was surprisingly crunchy (for what I assume to be a frozen dessert). A small amount of care should have been spent on creating the crispy sugar top (this was probably ignored) to make it perfect. Still, we found it enjoyable! I would have liked to see an expanded beer list, but the saki list looked intriguing and actually pretty easy to navigate! I wish I knew a little bit more about it. Conclusion: Yakitori Boy is trying to be good at a lot of things. However, you can feel the bones of a good restaurant and good sourcing peeking out. Shrinking the menu and making it a little bit easier to navigate should help improve what could be a great Japanese pub. We'll probably be back. read more
