Hokkaido Uni (100g) - $60 This was incredibly delicious!
    Mich M.

Yama Seafood is always posting beautiful photos on Instagram, tempting me to buy their products every single day. I couldn't resist. I placed an order on the Hokkaido Uni (100g) for $60 and Miyabi Premium Sushi Nori Seaweed (10 sheets/pk) for $11.95 last night (Thursday night), and I received my delivery the next day in the afternoon. It was amazing! Luis delivered to my door! This tray of Hokkaido Uni was absolutely out of this world! I eat a lot of uni but I don't remember ever having something like this before. It was sweet and fresh and friggen delicious! I want to order 2 more trays right now just thinking about it! $60 for this much Hokkaido uni is absolutely great value. I remember back in 2016, restaurants would sell a tray of Hokkaido Uni just like this one for $90. And if you order one uni sashimi or uni nigiri in a restaurant it's easily $20. Man, I need to order two more trays now! The Miyabi Premium Sushi Nori Seaweed was alright, nothing I can't pick up from a local supermarket for less; I thought it was something special when I bought it but it was very meh. Previously, I've purchased two trays of West Coast Uni (100g) Grade B for $25 each from their website and it had a really strong smell. Hokkaido Uni is so much tastier.

The catch of the day was solid but could be more flavorful. The fries weren't my favorite as you couldn't really taste the truffle. I also generally prefer thin cut fries. Service (4/5): The staff were nice and friendly. The place was very busy when we went on Sunday late afternoon around 530pm. Some of the items like the fish and chips weren't available because the shop was short staffed. The food took around 25 min to come out due to the short staff. Ambiance (5/5): Chill fish shop ambiance with indoor and outdoor seating. Nice relaxing music playing and cool fishing decor. Tables inside are a bit cramped while outdoor tables have more space. Spot is pretty busy.

We used to buy fish from Citarella in Manhattan, but now we're glad to have a local store that sells top-quality fish. We often buy their salmon to make oven-baked salmon with red bell peppers and onions over jasmine rice. Their salmon is always incredibly fresh, moist, and tasty. I also love their oyster po' boy and 'fish of the day' sandwiches. I highly recommend Scale's fish to anyone who lives in or visits Jersey City.

And as a bonus, it has not yet been "discovered" by the Yelp Elite / food influencer crowd (besides yours truly). The Alexandrian Style Shrimp was huge and delicious, but the Grilled Branzino (and really, any whole grilled fish) is the big, belting diva of the menu and one you should not miss. Whole, ground spices are packed into every bite care of lovely marinade, and your teeth will rejoice at how tender the meat is. Entrees all come with generous, complimentary portions of salad, tahini and pita, as well as lots of fluffy rice, so you can't walk away hungry. The prices are on the higher side, sadly--it seems nowhere is immune to inflation these days--but at least you'll get a ton of bang for your buck.

The space is small, about 8 tables, with dated, seventies decor, complete with plastic on the tables. Only one woman in the kitchen. We had the grilled Orata, which came with rice, salad, babaganoush and tahini sauce, side of eggplants with peppers in tomato sauce and the Alexandria style shrimp. Everything was fresh, the fish grilled to perfection and the shrimp well-seasoned. There is also a sandwich menu, but it was not available that day. This place as all of the elements I love in small businesses; no pretention, no gimmicks and no "fusion"...just authentic, simple, home made food, from kitchen straight to my stomach with no orchestra and fireworks. My only gripe is that the prices are high but given that food costs have risen so quickly in the last few years, I completely understand.

On the happy hour, we started with the oysters - they were good, enjoyed them we got a second round. We got 3 apps for under $30. The crab cake was okay we thought we would get more than one (3 of us). We got the eggplant, we absolutely loved that! Lastly, the calamari was great. I love the type of breading they do for them. We wanted to try more food but we ran out of time. I would come back to try more. We mainly did the happy hour menu and they have great prices! Really cute place. . Overall I liked the food and will try to come again for more.

The last time we came, the young man serving us was extremely attentive and professional, which is exactly why we decided to return. Unfortunately, this second visit was very disappointing. The steak frites was excellent, but the service was lacking. The young lady serving our table seemed far more focused on her cellular phone than attending guests. It took quite a while for our order to be taken, forgot half our order, and we repeatedly had to ask for empty plates to be cleared as additional courses were brought to the table. A restaurant can have great food, but attentive service and proper management matter just as much. We hope management takes this feedback seriously because this place has a lovely atmosphere and we would genuinely like to keep supporting a local neighborhood restaurant.
