For sure the best sushi joint on the far north side of Pittsburgh (Cranberry). On my last visit, fast seating, pleasant server, and appetizers arrived quickly. Rolls were generous in size with very fresh fish. Rice is there, but not overwhelming like grocery store sushi. Yama has a number of specialty rolls that I would suggest- not your typical "Rainbow or California Rolls". Prices are decent, and did I mention it's BYOB...what a great deal! Took my sister here for her birthday lunch last Thursday, as we both like Sushi. The BYOB is well advertised, and we came prepared. We plowed through 4 rolls, ( Incredible, Mini Me, Crazy Dynamite, Spicy King Crab ). The food was not only delicious, but it was beautiful as well. I lived in SoCal for 30 years where it's all fresh, and recently moved back to northern Butler County, and have been looking for a sushi place that is reasonably close with fresh quality ingredients, variety, great flavor, and good service. We ate here on New Years Eve. The others in my party ordered hibachi shrimp with fried rice and veg. The sauce on the dish was SO good, I loved the veg, my bf said it was the best fried rice he's had in recent memory and he would probably have to get that dish every time he went there. I ordered a few pieces of fish: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white tuna, eel and a Yama Roll. The fish was all very fresh, probably the best I've had in this area. I wasn't wowed by the tuna, but the rest was really good - especially the yellowtail - if it wasn't so busy I would have ordered seconds. The roll was good, super fresh, but lacked something, so I dipped it in one of the sauces that came with the hibachi meals and it really made it great. It's BYOB, so we couldn't order the beer we typically order at a sushi place, but now that we know, we can be prepared next time we go. read more

My fav sushi place in the area. Never a bad meal. This was my go to date place till I dated a girl not into sushi. But I still go here on my own as a treat to myself. Was on talking terms with the older lady who used to run the counter but haven't seen her in awhile. Very friendly service. The wasabi shumai from the appetizers menu is a desert island meal. One that if you had to eat while on a deserted island, I would choose. Fantastic. Only downside I see is that when I go to sushi places, I want to try new things. My favorite rolls though make it tough to try anything new, they are so good. I recommend the pretty girl roll and the green dragon roll. The wasabi roll is great if you want a cooked roll. I would give less stars if I were able to. We had a large party (around 40 people) the other night. They knew well in advance that we were coming and assured us they could handle our large group. In fact, we had to all turn in our orders a week ago. Here is how it was supposed to work: we all order a week ago, our orders were also documented on sheets of paper that had our names on it. When we got there the wait staff, who was already supposed to have our orders underway, was supposed to collect these papers and use them to keep track of who was getting what. Right. After waiting over an hour, only a few people were getting the random appetizers they ordered. After an hour and a half, some people were getting their dinners. After 2 hours, about half of our people were wondering if they were going to get served anything and some actually gave up and left with no food. After 2 and a half hours we gave up and went to pay (1 out of 5 of us never received any if his food and we didn't even get one of the appetizers we ordered). We were pretty upset that all of the other tables around our party were seated, served, and checked out in a timely fashion while we still waited. They must have assumed we were sure money so we could wait. They tried to charge us for the meal we did not receive as well as the meal version of the shrimp tempura appetizer we got (which was $10 more!!!). After this was rectified we paid and left. The funniest part is, they tacked on 20% gratuity. Isn't the normal 18% for large parties?! I will never ever go back there. Ever. The food we did receive wasn't bad, but it really sucked waiting so very long for it!!! read more

We traveled from DC to visit brother and spouse and stopped here for dinner the day before Chinese New Years. Thought this family run restaurant put out good quality sush and the owner was attentive and friendly. The uni and toro was as good as large city neighborhood restaurants. Freshness of food was well managed. The soba noodle with tempura lacked flavor in broth but this isn't San Francisco. If you find yourself in Mars, Pa and want some sushi, stop here. We have been going to Yama Sushi for the past 4 years and love this place.. Sandy ( her brother and husband are the chefs) and her staff are always friendly and welcoming. The Sushi is the best in the area ( we don't do chains) and it's BYOB...always a plus. We have ordered numerous rolls over the years and never had a bad one... Best sushi in the Mars area that isn't a chain. Make sure to try the sweet potato tempura rolls and the spicy Alaskan rolls. They are to die for! Also, the shrimp shumai comes in the bento box. We weren't sure what it was at first, but as soon as we figured it out...the shumai became our go-to appetizer. Yama is a BYOB, which is good to know going in. A few friends and I met here for a late lunch. We ordered a few appetizers and an assortment of rolls. The appetizers, edamame, Japanese pork dumplings, and some octopus, were all quite tasty. Specifically the dumplings were a hit. The nice aroma of ginger was mixed with the saltiness of the pork in a crisp pan fried wanton wrapper. The octopus had a nice vinaigrette to compliment the salty chewiness. It was served with yummy pickled onions and a seaweed salad, a bite with all the elements made for a nice treat. Out of our rolls, there were three rock stars. The first was the kamikaze roll, mackerel mixed with ginger was a bright gustatory surprise. The second was the calamari roll. Upon reflection we are not sure why we liked this one so much, but hey it's calamari and fried in tempura batter, what's not to like? Lastly, I got a sweet potato tempura. I like to add jalepeño and spicy mayo. The sweetness and crunchiness of the potato dance on the tongue with the umami of the seaweed and soy and the bite of the jalepeño. I was a little disappointed with the spicy tuna roll. I am used to having it with actual chunks of tuna. This was actually more of a spicy tuna salad and texturally unpleasant. The service was very attentive, friendly, and even humorous. The atmosphere is classy yet casual. The only complaint about the atmosphere would be the one ply toilet paper-major bummer (pun intended). Overall I would give Yama sushi a high recommendation. read more

I love a lot of Asian cuisine, and while I prefer Chinese to Japanese, I still like to stop into a good sushi bar and restaurant every now and then. In Cranberry, and even the greater Pittsburgh purlieu, there aren't too many choices for really good Japanese food though...until Yama Sushi came around (whenever that was) =D This is a truly great restaurant, and I'll tell you why: a lot of times I find that you have to either compromise on the quality of the place if you want authentic Japanese/Chinese food, but that is totally not the case here. The food is genuine Japanese and well-prepared (and I've been to Japan), and yet the restaurant is very neat and clean. The place is spotless, in fact...it's so fastidiously kept that taking a trip to the bathroom is almost worth stopping in for--just so you can enjoy a clean and private one for once (with hot water too!). The inside of the place is beautifully arranged in a kind of modern reinvention of traditional Japanese interiors: there's bamboo, kanji, a couple of nice little geisha paintings, and a lot of earthy colors. It isn't tacky decorating at all, so you will be able to enjoy perusing the walls and stuff. The tables are all laid out sensibly, and the sushi bar is in the back. All of the servers and staff (to my knowledge) are Japanese. But yeah! about the food. I have been here many times, and I have tried many things: nothing bad so far. The sushi is delicious, but I definitely recommend trying out the menu food--the harumaki is a delicious appetizer, and I've had too many good entrees there to list, but beef negimaki is my favorite. You get quite a lot of food when you order from Yama, too, and that's always nice. The dessert portion of the menu doesn't live up to other places, which one might expect at a Japanese place. They have a few selections like mochi ice cream, and a few other things that are good, but not great. Service is pretty good, and you can eat with chopsticks or silverware =] It's a very nice place to eat, so you should stop in and try it at least once. read more

The sushi is always amazing! We've had the snow white roll, pretty girl roll, and always always the spicy scallop which is the best spicy scallop I've ever had. I like the hibachi chicken entree: it is so delicious and they give you tons of food. Try the hot tea, I can't get enough of it. Easily the best Japanese in the area.
