Ever since I discovered matcha in college, I've been on the hunt for some yummy matcha spots here in LA. Interestingly, it's not easy to find since most spots make matcha lattes either too sweet or too watery. Usually, I have to make it at home to get my preferred taste which is strong and slightly bitter with a hint of honey. I like for the creaminess of the milk to be the undertone of the matcha flavor. I haven't been to any spot that can make it like this--until I found Yamari. It was a rainy day, so I ordered a hot matcha latte. I have no idea how they did it but they made me a latte that was bold, intense, sweet, and creamy. It was absolutely delightful and invigorating. Their soft serve is amazing and it's my go to but I admit it's not for everyone as it's more on the bitter side so don't expect something super sweetened. Whenever I go, the barista taking my order is always nice and helps me with any questions or recommendations I have. Absolutely love this place! I'm a huge tea lover and I was craving some strong matcha. I've been the several locations: Tea Master in Little Tokyo, Matcha Maiko in Rowland, and Meccha Matcha in Artesia. This place has the deepest green I've seen so far for any matcha place, and they do user a particularly strong matcha for their soft serve. Couple of things, if you don't like strong less-than-American style sweet matcha, this might not be for you. The soft serve is not as sweet (not overly sweet) as other locations or even as much as what you're probably used to. Both the hojicha and matcha soft serve and drinks are on the more bitter/tea tasting end. For me, that's great because I prefer a stronger tea flavor, but that's not for everyone. Also, know that they do use cow's milk so you can substitute for soy milk for the drinks but not the soft serve. I felt particularly bloated, so I would warn people who are lactose intolerant to take a lactose pill. For the parfaits, they also include some matcha jellies (I don't think they're warabi mochi), and they are also less sweet than I expected. It's catering more for those who like an authentic tea flavor rather than for someone with a sweet tooth. read more

For anybody saying "this is the most authentic way of having matcha" etc I completely disagree. I have been to Japan and have had matcha ice cream at various shops there. & while they are always stronger than most shops in LA, none were as bitter as this one. Subtle sweetness goes a long way. I don't even like sweet, but I felt like I was literally biting into a bitter leaf with this one. I had to throw my $10 cup away, I just couldn't do it.
