With the close proximity to my house, it's going to be hard to stay away from this place! We got the Calamari Roll, Tiger Roll, and a Monkey Brain (Yum!) -- all super good. The Calamari Roll is topped with a stack of tender/crunchy fried calamari rings, while the Tiger Roll tuna was fresh and delish! Prices are higher than many places, but it's such high quality the extra cost is fitting. We've tried quite a few things over the last several months, so I'll try to review them all. 1st, let me say, the experience is always the same. Greeted promptly when you walk in, everyone is friendly and efficient. The food is consistently great! In addition to what we've had before, the chicken yakasoba, gyoza, sunshine roll, cali roll, miso & cucumber salad were all winners. Tonight, i ordered the Asain Salad. It pretty big with a lot of grilled chicken on top. The dressing was very light and tasty. It was very refreshing on a 100* day. If you haven't eaten here before, I highly recommend you try it. Came here after a morning hike thru Powell Butte. Quite an extensive menu! (Note: some of the pricing from yelpers' photos has gone up by a couple bucks since they were posted) By and large they serve Japanese items -- sushi rolls, udon, seaweed salad -- but they also had bibimbap and spring rolls. Lots of beverage options too: teas, Japanese beers, Ramune. We ordered a chicken katsu/california roll combo bento that came with rice, fried gyoza, miso soup and the veggie tempura (sizeable portion!) and eel rolls. The sushi didn't have the greatest presentation but I came to eat it not instagram it. Friendly service, free refills on the sodas. Even though there were a few large groups in there around the same time our meals came out quickly. FYI it's in the McDonald's shopping plaza, not Safeway's read more

First time having real sushi and I'm super excited I stopped here. I of course checked Yelp reviews first and they didn't let me down. Very nice and clean in the inside. Tables are spaced out perfectly. Staff immediately greeted us and took us to the table. My toddler was being a wild woman, it was Friday, we were hungry and ready to get the weekend started. I quickly asked the waitress what was cooked lol. There was a section of cooked sushi on the menu so I was excited about that. I ended up ordering the Salmon crisp which was AWESOME!! Omg and the plate presentation was great too, I'm a sucker for good looking food! I ordered spring rolls for my toddler and she loved them. The food came out quickly so there wasn't much of a wait. I can't compare it to any other sushi places since this was my first time going to get it but it for sure won't be my last. My friend Julie and I met for lunch here today; we're always checking out new Japanese places to eat. I'd seen the Grand Opening sign on Yami Sushi about two weeks ago, so we decided to try it out. Everything is wonderfully new and fresh: the menus, the seating, the decor. There are gorgeous orchids (yes, living ones!) and attractive displays everywhere. I particularly liked that the tables weren't squished together. If I remember right, Julie figured out that there's seating for about 48 people, including a large group table at the rear of the area. There's a sushi bar as well. We were greeted right away by our server and told we could sit anywhere we wanted. We chose a table next to the window in the front. The menu is full of yummy looking stuff to eat. There's a big sushi menu on the inside pages, a lunch special, and kinds of dinner choices. I should've brought home a take-out menu (yes, they have that too) so that I could tell you a lot more stuff that's on the menu. I ordered the Tempura Roll and Julie had teriyaki chicken. Almost before we could say a word, Julie's food arrived; mine took a bit longer but not by much. The plates were very attractively arranged. My sushi roll looked like a caterpillar, with sauce for its legs. The pieces of tempura stuck straight up...actually, it looked more like the Loch Ness Monster at that point...it was beautiful! My tempura was perfect - not doughy, not oily in the least. It was crisp and delicious. Julie's chicken was finger-lickin' good as well. One of the things I liked best about was the music playing softly in the background. It was varied, from modern day ballads to guitar instrumentals, and was not intrusive in the least. It made our dining experience even better. While we were there, several people came in for take out meals, and they'd obviously been there before. The location is good, right across from Safeway near the corner of Powell Boulevard and 181st (Highland Blvd south of Powell). Egress can be a little slow if people are coming out from McD's and use the same driveway. But why would you want to eat fast food when really good food is just a parking lot away? I'm giving Yami Sushi 5 stars without reservation (no pun intended!). Although the business is new, I think it has a great future in Gresham. Fast, friendly service, a beautiful atmosphere, and good food. We will be back! read more

Best Sushi I have ever had in my life! Get the Hurricane, and Spicy Cali Roll! The waitress was fantastic. I can barely move because of how full and happy I am. I am so satisfied. I normally don't like driving 20 minutes for sushi (especially since there's a place 2 minutes from my house) but I am completely happy making that trip for Yami! Always excited about a new sushi place out in the Far East so I was so disappointed when I popped the first one in my mouth. Rice is hard, fish has no flavor. Dang! Had another one from a different roll. Blasé.. They have sushi "cakes" besides the normal rolls. Never heard of but they are basically squares instead of being round. The restaurant being new is clean and the windows give the place a lot of light. Hands down the best sushi I have had in awhile. We started out with Gyozas and spiced edamame. The gyozas were perfect! Tasty and crispy. The spiced edamame had the perfect blend of sweet chili sauce and spicy red peppers. This followed with an order of the Rainbow Roll and the New Yorker. The rainbow roll was a great combination of salmon, shrimp, tuna and yellow fin tuna, with avocado. The New Yorker has eel, cucumber, avocado and sesame. All were very fresh and tasty. Came to visit Oregon and we stopped by this place. I ordered the chicken/ gyoza plate and my sister and her boyfriend ordered some sushi. The sushi here is HUGE! Each roll is like the size of my palm. They really liked it, and the spicy mayo was on point! My plate was delicious! The chicken was cooked to perfection, teriyaki sauce was sweet, rice was nicely cooked, and the gyoza was tasty! Awesome customer service too! This place is high quality. The sushi looks like art work, food is always fresh and delicious, and you can tell the effort is always 10/10. Typically we order food from here with no issues at all, takeout is always packaged nicely and the order is always accurate. Tonight we decided to eat in the restaurant and the service was excellent, everyone was really kind, restaurant was clean and the decor was welcoming with calm energy all around, and the food was hot, fresh, and brought out promptly. They would've earned more stars if they're server wasn't useless. We're a party of 5 and all of our food came out separately. 4 of the orders were for ramen, so the delay only makes sense when we figured in out server, who didn't even bother to apologize. Here's a breakdown: Me: sushi (came out first and fast) Daughter: ramen (came out 2nd and she loved it) Son: ramen ( came out with the above- he loved it) Other son: ordered ramen for him and told server that because the bowls were big, I'd share with him. (His order never came. Ended up canceling it because she misunderstood and he shared his brother's food) Husband: we had to ask repeatedly for his spicy ramen. It didn't come out until every single one of us had already finished eating. Server had the nerve to give me a little attitude and ask if we wanted his "to go". For real? We came here because of yelp reviews and for ramen. They even have a sticker that says yelp loves them. The food really is good and the portions were huge (thankfully since we needed to share with one another) but if the server messes up that much and doesn't even bother to apologize- is it really worth it? I only had time to write this long review because we're still sitting here waiting for my poor husband to eat his food.... we've all been done for 20 minutes now. I guess if you're going to come here- come alone. That way you won't have to risk one person eating and not the other. I ordered 3 rolls- Philadelphia, yellowtail/green onion, and spicy tuna. I opened the bag and immediately was overwhelmed with that stinky fishy smell and thought oh no, maybe it's just the seaweed.... Well it wasn't just the seaweed. I took 1 bite of each roll and still feel like I might get sick. The fish was warm, the rice was almost wet and was a worse texture than grocery store sushi. I literally just threw away 3 full rolls minus 1 piece each. A waste of money. The only good thing was the delivery was such a quick turn around. Got takeout from Yami for a special at-home celebration this weekend and wow, it exceeded the expectations on all fronts. The customer service was incredible to start, and they've thoughtfully adapted to still provide delicious food to the community during an unprecedented time.
