You know when the sushi restaurateur tells you not to use too much soy sauce that the fish is going to be fresh and delicious. I went to pick up a takeout order after a very long day, and the restaurant was about to close. The woman who packed my food (probably an owner) was telling me to use a little sesame oil and black pepper, and I mentioned something about having gluten free soy sauce at home. The man next to us (whom I'm guessing is also an owner) said "not too much soy sauce," and that was when I knew that both of them care very much about the food they're putting out. He said that he usually sauces the fish himself but couldn't because I'm GF--and it's always so reassuring to have it confirmed that the allergy note on the order was taken seriously. The fish was so good! There wasn't too much rice as there often is with chirashi, and the pickles were also great. It was nicely plated. The wasabi was really pungent and awesome. Found this place on Yelp and I'm so glad I did!! First of all, the service was SO great. You can tell it's a family business, and she was just so accommodating and generous, she gave us an extra miso soup and an extra portion of fresh wasabi because I mentioned I loved it. So friendly and kind, I would come back just for the service! The stand out item for us was the crunch roll. As we walked in, this family owned restaurant was very welcoming and friendly. It's a very small cozy restaurant and there are seats at the sushi bar and a couple more along the walls. It was our first time trying the sushi restaurant as we live nearby. We ordered the bento boxes and 2 sushi plates. The sushi was delicious and fresh and the bento boxes had a great presentation but didn't seem that there was anything extra. As we were 2 people visiting, the bento boxes came out to our table 2 separate times about 7 mins apart. Typically we like to start eating when our whole party get the food so one party had salmon that was cold. The dipping sauce for the tempura was also cold. Well this was our second visit which we hoped it would be memorable. We were showed to a table where we're greeted by the server. She asked if we would like to order a drink which we did. We began looking through the volume of 3 different menu. We ordered spicy tuna rice cake giving specific instructions "not" spicy. Well it was served and immediately we tasted very spicy. We called the server and brought to her attention. She told the chef who refused to remake and we made do. We ordered there seafood salad and while it was prepared nicely the only thing that was memorable was the dressing. The fish that was served was very thick instead of delicately thin sliced so you e joy the subtle flavors. We then ordered albacore sashimi with crispy onion and dressing. Here again the sashimi was thickly cut eliminating the subtle taste of the sashimi and covered in what I describe as a noodle in can quality instead crispy prepare noodles that are gently fried. Then the sashimi and noodles were dressed in a spicy dressing completely eliminating the taste of the sashimi. Finally we we asked for the check totally disappointed. The one good thing was our server Chris who tried to make the experience good but it did not work out. Even though the location was a big deal but the quality was missed and we are sorry it did not work out. Decided to try it one more time and I ordered their spicy chicken. So disappointed, they made me wait 30 minutes for my order and you would think it was going to be fresh right? This chicken tasted old and stale and I could not finish it. They also changed the recipe because it had an awful sweet taste to it. The portion was so skimpy as well and way over priced. NEVER AGAIN will I eat from there again which is so disappointing, I had been a regular there at least twice a month for the last 25 years. First time customer. 11:30 am on a Thursday. Lunchtime. Safe area and plenty of parking. Greeted warmly upon entrance. Fast courteous service. Was specifically looking for an affordable and tasty Salmon Teriyaki Bento box. Yanagi delivered! Perfect amount of food, and good tasting teriyaki sauce, which to me makes a huge difference in the flavor. Miso soup is really good quality too. Note: Only recommendation is for the restaurant to serve the tempura sauce warmed so it doesn't make the tempura shrimp and/or vegetables cool upon entering your mouth. Atmosphere is very pleasant, intimate yet warmly hospitable with good lighting. Would definitely recommend this sushi restaurant, and had I not been so hungry upon arriving, I might have remembered to snap a photo! Thank you for a nice first time experience Yanagi! The food was really tasty and I was very satisfied with the bento. The sushi rolls were good but I wasn't sure if they're the ones I actually ordered. It was a bit chaotic on the sushi coming out vs what is being served. But even with that mess, the service is really nice and very homey. Yellowtail sushi was fantastic and the spicy salmon roll (at least this is what I assumed I got) was the right amount of balance with it's fishy flavor and spice. Came here again on a late lunch a couple weeks later. Place is empty and I got to sit on a table rather than the bar compared to the last time around. Got the yellowtail and spicy salmon again to see if it still tastes good like last time.... Yes it is :-). I got a spider roll to try something else and it was really good. Big portions and prepared so well. I got something else I forgot what roll it is but it was also good. The owner gave me a couple sushi to try that's not on the menu - albacore with onions.....
