Truly an experience in an unlikely place. Omakase (you will not go wrong) and everything tasted perfect and excellent quality. Each item perfectly curated and flowed together. People may wonder if it is enough food and for the regular Omakase, it was 10 courses and I was full by course 8. The chef takes pride in his sushi/food and you can tell. The staff were very nice and explained each item that came out. The restaurant has an intimate feel with jazz music playing. They have an extensive sake collection. They offer a sake flight to try, but I had one of their sake cocktails and it was delicious. This spot is a whole vibe tucked away in the H.K. Valley Center. Jazz music, extensive sake bar, all kinds of delicious tapas (hot, cold, meat, fish, you name it.) The service is friendly and helpful, with lots of great recommendations. I came with my lovely mama, who is very picky about her restaurants. They brought us some fish cake in dashi on the house--I will be dreaming about these fish cakes. Every dish was thoughtful and delicious. We got their special fried soft shell shrimp as per our waitress's recommendation; they were juicy and crispy and full of shrimp flavor that went fabulously with a squeeze of lemon. We've never had soft shell shrimp before, we can't wait to get it again! My mom's favorite was their grilled Hokkaido baby scallops, which were tender and so fresh. Mouthfeel was satisfying and chewy without being tough. The agedashi tofu was some of the best I've ever had, the miso eggplant perfectly sweet and savory. I loved the curry chicken kara-age, the half order came with two pieces! My mom thought it was a bit salty, worth it to note that she's very conscious of her salt intake for blood pressure reasons. I loved it, lol. We shared pieces of nigiri and a negitoro cut roll. That toro was FANTASTIC! Every piece we had was complex and full of flavor. I'm a new uni convert; this one was buttery and sweet. Our waitress mixed up our order for Spanish mackerel with Japanese mackerel and let us keep the Japanese mackerel no charge while still bringing out the Spanish mackerel!! So kind and both pieces were strikingly different (lucky us!!!). I loved my sake and aperol cocktail. I loved everything about this place, for that matter. Such a hole in a wall hidden gem!! 10/10 would recommend! Super authentic. Almost want to gatekeep but gotta let my fellow foodies know about this spot +located in a plaza with korean market; plenty of parking available. +can reserve the standard way by calling but they also have website to make your reservation online +super authentic izakaya that also serves fresh authentic sushi! We actually came here 2 years ago and ate mostly tapas and some sushi and it was amazing! Today we opted for straight omakase and did the true omakase where chef won't stop until you tell the chef you're full and satisfied. Obviously price will be heftier than their smaller omakase menu because chef adds more dishes than usual but it's so worth it!! Highly recommend if you're not a picky eater. I just had 8 appetizers, 1 meat entree (lamb chop), and 15 nigiris for only $163 before tax and tip, which is amazing!! The appetizers included authentic Japanese tapas like nasu no ohitashi (cold fried eggplant simmered in dashi broth) to sashimi to even crab arancini and they were all phenomenal! Nigiri's included standard yellow halibut salmon to even pricey items like sweet shrimp, abalone, and hida wagyu sushi and they were all SO GOOOOOD. I'm drooling thinking about my meal. Oh also did I mention their homemade pudding is such an awesome way to finish the meal? Pudding isn't too sweet and it was delishhhhh. +the waitresses there are both super nice and attentive. It's so cute that they have a lot of regulars there and they all sit at the counter and mingle with each other. You know the restaurant is doing something right when they're so loved not just for their food +bar uerukmamu also has interesting tapas like grilled black cod liver (which tastes similar to monk fish liver but less fishy) and other things. Good little hidden Gem in San Fernando Valley. Located next to Greenland Korean Supermarket, this little Japanese place seats approximately 16-20, so make reservation online. We arrive with our reservation and was promptly seated, with 3 other tables having reserved signs on them, we were greeted by 2 Japanese waitress as well as the Japanese chef. The wall behind the kitchen has a full array of sake, too many to count. The place had a special / niche atmosphere. Although they had Omasake (Chef's choice for about $120 which is very reasonable we decided to order our self's this time. We ordered the belly sashimi place (Salmon belly, yellow tail belly, and Toro) $39. The sweet shrimp ($13x2), the special #1 (Tuna, yellow tail, salmon), Uni 2 way $37, and a few different tapas to try out. Our favorite was the Santa Barbara Uni, the Hokkaido uni wasn't as sweet. This is my new favorite sushi spot. Came in on a Thursday with no reservation right when they opened. Tables did quickly fill up so I recommend making a reservation.Tried the sake flight ($26) and omakase ($120) and really enjoyed everything they served. The service was wonderful and staff was very kind. They have an insane selection of sake and also offered seasonal selections which were fantastic. I could not pick a favorite since they were all so good. The omakase is about 10 courses and I found it to be filling. There is a cheaper omakase lite that is $85 and about 7 courses. All the fish was very fresh and they do not cheap out on portioning. The cuts of belly were larger than any other restaurant I've tried. It also included A5 wagyu that was outstanding. It's a small place with a very cozy vibe that promotes conversation. Huge fan of the jazz music they play as well. Will definitely be coming back again. read more

3/6/2026 - One of my favorite places to visit when traveling to SoCal. The sake flight (Hoyo Manamusume, Dewazakura Izumi Judan, & Ama No To Tokubetsu Junmai) excellent. Started out with fishcakes in a light broth and fried oysters followed by beautifully presented sushi: Tuna, Yellowtail, Snapper, and melt-in-your-mouth Toro. Next was the grilled Yuzu Chicken and Fried Shrimp. The Saba, Amberjack, Black Snapper, and Spanish Mackerel with thin, crispy fried fish skin so delicious. The uni was so smooth and really hit the spot. Finally, another order of grilled Yuzu chicken to dip in the savory sauce left over from the fried oysters. Service by the staff, the expert skill of the sushi chef, and our entire experience was wonderful as I shared good times and laughter with my daughter and son-in-law. read more

Love this little place. It's affectionate, warm, and humble. Don't just come for the nigiri. The other izakaya items are stellar, notably the grilled yuzu chicken and the bakudan (I'm telling you. ). Delicious little find in the valley. The fish was fresh and the small items were really good! Tried a few of the popular items - the karage and eggplant were very good. The servers were very nice. Definitely an authentic homey feel. Not a large restaurant, so it's better to have a reservation! What a hidden gem! Who would of known there's a fantastic izakaya in the Valley. From the outside Bar Uerukamu doesn't even look like a restaurant until you walk in. Reservation is a must because and tables are limited, maybe total of eight tables. They also has a nice sake list. Food that was ordered: Complimentary Cold Soba w/ Fresh Wasabi. Delicious, light and refreshing. Gobo Chips: Good, the only other place that I have eaten this was at Hachi in Torrance. This place does well but I wish they would cut it into small thinner strips. Nasu Miso: Excellent. Fried Aji: Fantastic! perfectly done. The aji batter was nice and light. Ankimo: Outstanding. So rich and creamy. 4 Kinds of Sliverfish Sushi: Delicious. All the fish was fresh and well prepared. Shari was nice and seasoned. Kohada: Delicious: Kohada was well marinated not to vinegary. Iwashi: Delicious: Not as fatty this time of the year but still has the oily and slightly fatty goodness. Karrage Chicken: This was ok. The Karrage was over fried. Tsukume Yuzu Ponzu: Good. First time having chicken tsukume served this way. The tsukume was moist and flavorful. Service: Super friendly and professional. Overall what a great place. I'm definitely a fan of Bar Uerukamu. The Japanese mackerel was to die for, and the cocktail I ordered (don't remember the name) was also very good. All of our food was so delicious and authentic. The fish on our sushi was fresh and tasty. We especially loved the salmon - possibly the best salmon sushi I've ever had. They season the sushi for you, creating the perfect balanced bite - so no need to add soy sauce or wasabi. The service was also wonderful, all the staff were very friendly and gave great recommendations. We absolutely loved how the karaage was fried, so juicy and crispy - plus the curry sauce on it made it so unique and delicious. The crab arancini were also delicious, a perfect fusion of Italian and Japanese. The crispy rice under the lava egg was fried to perfection and paired so well with the egg. The agedashi tofu was delicately fried and served with the most tasty broth. The local Nova sake flight also impressed us, each one was unique and so smooth. The ambiance is warm, inviting and cozy. What a hidden gem!!!! I can't believe this 5* restaurant is tucked away in a rundown strip mall. We each enjoyed the sake tasting which was three different types of sake, 4 ounces each. We ended up ordering a carafe to share afterwards. The menu covered a broad range of cold, hot, vegetarian, meat and seafood 'tapas' including sushi. I really cannot rave enough about how each of the dishes were unique and held its own. All I can say is it's a hidden gem with very friendly and attentive staff. Jun, the chef/owner of this restaurant, had a sushi bar in Tarzana called Uerukamu for many years. It was my go to sushi destination but, sadly for me, he retired a long time ago. Not only was the food always on point, it was a cool looking place and he played great music, mainly well curated jazz. Well, I found out that he came out of retirement and his skills have not diminished one bit. Everything we tried was first rate. He considers this more of a sake bar/tapas kind of restaurant but he still offers a nice selection of sushi and sashimi along with an interesting menu of cooked small plates. A very good sake selection available in different serving sizes, including sake flights, is a nice touch and worth exploring. The restaurant has limited seating so reservations are a good idea. Jun has once again created a cool atmosphere in a rather nondescript shopping center location....and the music is still excellent. Front of house is tended by his wife and she and the staff all work to create a welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend a visit! read more

Favorites were the Japanese yam fries, yellowtail belly sushi, and mini unagi bowl. The sake selection was also great - we got the noble arrow, which was smooth and wonderful. Definite hidden gem. The food is unapologetically Japanese and I felt like I was back in Japan. There are many authentic Japanese restaurants nowadays that are great, but this place just has that subtle detail that makes it seem like it is catering specifically for the Japanese palate rather than the general mass. I had about 7 different tapas, some sushi, and sake. My favorite and in my opinion the must order is the bakudon. Where else will you find a natto/tuna/squid/tofu dish in this region at a reasonably priced/non-michelin restaurant? A dash of soy and the umami from the combination of everything was amazing. I would come back specifically for this dish. The sushi was also pretty good, priced at about $8-12 for most nigiri which is on par for the region. The fish was very good, not the best I've had, but the attention, care, and execution was what really sold it. You can tell they spent a little extra time on it with now neat it is, the temperature, any extra knife work on it, if it's pre seasoned with any soy/toppings, etc. At this price point, definitely punches above its weight. For example, the aji nigiri also came with a little piece of the fried bone/spine which ate like a very delicate delicious fish cracker. The sake was good and they had a variety that are not your typical mainstream favorites. The sake was a little more expensive than typical for the amount imo and if you just ordered a bottle, but not by much and I thought it was worth it for the experience of trying new flavors.
