This place is the best for what they do! I priced the job elsewhere and Yankee Discount Muffler blew their estimate out of the water. Great customer service as well! The mechanic showed me exactly what was wrong and how to best fix it without having to replace the whole exhaust system. He even let me inspect the welding and pipes after they finished and it looked like the work was done in the factory. Truly, exhaust system surgeons. I had an opportunity to meet the owner today and what a pleasure it was. I had a loud noise coming from my muffler and I of course panicked thinking I was going to have a very expensive bill. The owner helped me get my car on the lift and invited me in to look underneath the car. He explained to me he had been in business 31 years and was very fair to his customers. He wanted to explain to me exactly what he saw during his inspection. After about a minute he diagnosed my problem and immediately repaired it. I had seen commercials for Yankee Discount Muffler many times and I always wondered how they were. Well I was driving home from grocery shopping and my car started to be extremely loud. And I remember from years ago when that happens something is going wrong with the muffler under the car. I called and was told to bring the car in the next morning which I did. I was waited on by Louis and he was extremely nice...and helpful. The first thing he said was I will try and save you the most money I can. Come to find out the pipe going from the muffler to the catalytic converter was bad, the muffler was bad and had a break in it and also the part that holds it up was broken too. And lastly I wanted my back brakes done. So for everything it was $902.00 and I couldn't of been more satisfied. What I liked about this business is they walk you through every aspect of the repair and price it all out. After having my car repaired I spoke to several neighbors and I said guess where I took my car.....and they all said Yankee Discount Muffler. So I'm not the only one singing their praises. Needed a simple Flexpipe after hitting a sinkhole jarring the system enough to damage it. These guys seen an old guy and proudly proclaimed that the entire system would cost me 3000.00 BUT he could repair my broken piece for 650.00. I refused and just for the heck of it went elsewhere and got exactly the same offering for 250.00!. What really ticked me off is that I threw these guys a tip just for looking at it. While driving home I had a pipe break off of my muffler system, and every other place I went to said they would have to replace the whole system. Coming here I got quick and honest help, they repaired the broken pipe and a second part of the system for a quarter of the price I would have had to pay somewhere else. I first did business with them 9 years ago. It was very expensive for parts and labor. They converted a 2006 Mustang from single to dual exhaust. Three years later I brought in a 2005 Mustang for the same job and this time the owner refused to do the work. I had purchases the parts in advance. Although he had done the job before, he said it was illigal to convert the vehicle into a dual exhaust. Just last week I brought my 2011 GMC Acadia to have a catalytic converter replaced. I purchased the part in advance and it was a bolt on part, no welding required. I asked him how much would it cost to replace the part. He sarcastically said $750. He lifted the car, took a look at it, and told me he couldn't do the work because it was "illigal". It appears that the Owner will turn down work and tell you the work is illegal if he isn't making a big enough profit. Don't go there unless you are willing to pay them for parts and labor. Over pricing parts is where they make their profit. The owner is a con artist. The same guy in the outdated commercial promising to be the best in town. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place, but overall, they're not bad. I'd heard great reviews about them from some of my fellow broke friends about how they saved them scads of money on catalytic converter repairs and the like. The first experience that I had with them was definitely 5 stars, but that was with my mother's vehicle, not mine, so I'll suffice to say that they are definitely not like other mechanics that I've dealt with where you pretty much have to schedule well ahead of time for them to do so much as an oil change and you're lucky if you have your car back that same week. You can call at 4:45 on a Friday afternoon and if they aren't busy, they'll take you in immediately. My mom had a small leak in her exhaust and they fixed it in less than an hour. The 3 stars is for my experience. Seeing as how they were so great with my mom's exhaust repair and were advertising a $220 brake repair for American sedans (something like that), I brought my 1999 Pontiac Sunfire in for a brake repair that I knew I sorely needed. Unfortunately, no sooner did they put my car up on the lift, they started barraging me with bad news. They told me that there was no way they could make my car road safe for a mere $220, that they needed to do $650 worth of repairs, absolute bare minimum they needed to do $380. I had $280 to my name at that point, so I was really not able to afford that and I told him to take my car down, that I would just drive really carefully. To the mechanic's credit (and the ONLY reason I was toying with the idea of giving them 4 stars, but the cons just were too glaring) the mechanic offered to do a payment plan, which is absolutely unheard of nowadays, but he swore he was so concerned for my safety that he said he wouldn't let me go anywhere without at least doing some kind of repair. Not sure if he was being genuine or not, but any kind of concern is much appreciated. So, I was able to borrow $70 from a family member and they did whatever repairs they could (seemed to be with a lot of junkyard parts which, eh, whatever works) and my car is a bit more drive-able now. I'm not sure if I'm going to go with them for my rear brakes or not, but if I go back to some place like Don Stevens and find out that I was screwed over, I will not be returning, no matter how quick and cheap the repairs are, payment plan offers or not. read more

My son's 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser needed a new muffler. I did not want to spend a lot of $$$ on the car. I went to Munro Muffler in Westport and even told the guy "I'm not in a position to spend a lot on this old truck with 230,000 miles on it." So the guy comes back with a $ 650 quote!! I told him NO, And he removed the truck from the lift. Fortunately I had the day off and went up to Bridgeport after I "googled" discount muffler and found Yankee Discount Muffler. I met Peter (I think) and he "got it" right away. He was able to use the old pipe and installed a new muffler for $350. That was an instant $300 savings. I've gone here several times over the past 15 years and always been happy with the service and the price. They are very honest, they don't nickle and dime you like other chain places. Part of their secret is that they custom make much of the exhaust systems instead of paying for OEM or after market prices. The owner of this business is extremely honest and it is worth driving out of your way to see him if you need work done. In my case I went to see him expecting to spend several hundred dollars to replace the resonator and muffler on my car. He put my car up on the lift and explained that the flaking layers on the exhaust that I was concerned with were a non functional cover layer and that my stainless exhaust had a number of years left in it. He didn't charge me anything and sent me on my way. Because of his honesty I will return to his business when I do need a repair. read more

Based on previous Yelp testimonials, I was counting on Yankee Discount Muffler to fix my 1990 Acura at a reasonable cost. Absolutely beyond satisfied. They brought my car right in first thing on a Monday morning. I was hoping to get away with one pipe but they showed me where the muffler and tailpipe were all rusted out. I thought a 23 yr. old car would be a problem but since they make many of their own pipes and resonators, they had it done in about an hour. The cost was about 25% less than what I expected. Wanted to throw a quick update up. I decided to change up my exhaust system completely. I brought it to a mechanic friend of mine to help with the job and when he removed the exhaust pipe, he just started laughing. I asked him what was so funny and he showed me a pretty significant hole in the top of the exhaust pipe, where they obviously hadn't been able to reach since they performed the job while still on the car. He said it was the worst "professional" welding job he had ever seen and worse than a lot of amateur welding jobs he's seen roll into his shop.
