This place is good, real good, and one of the best lunch deals in Charlotte. Curry chicken with rice and peas(beans), cabbage, plantain, and a drink for $7 out the door. And that chicken is really tender and flavorful. I will put a disclaimer that if you havn't had legit Caribbean style chicken, make sure you know that there will cut up bones in there. There isn't really much signage that is visible from a distance. It's in a little strip on the side of a grocery store. Not really much in the way of seating, so get it to go. Staff is super friendly and inviting. Not the best area of town, but I didn't feel unsafe or anything during lunch hours. The food is absolutely delicious, I ordered the jerk chicken meal with rice and peas and that came with cabbage and plantains. I also got a side of the large Mac n cheese and myyy was it perfection! The jerk sauce is very delicious and for $8.00 the amount of food that came in the box was A LOT so it was definitely worth it. Most jerk places always fail to give you a decent amount but Yard Cooked Dishes never fails to please me. I've heard of this place so many times and finally decided to stop by today before work and grab food for lunch. I'll definitely be back again! This place did not disappoint! I had jerk chicken w/white rice and plantains (It comes with a drink and steam cabbage but I didn't want the cabbage and instead I got extra plantains) The jerk chicken is very good a lil spicy which I don't mind I like spicy food also the chicken is tender easy to eat The mac is very cheesy and has good taste but it is not included as a side so you do have to pay extra for that! The chicken & gravy tasted pretty good as did the rice & peas. The plantain were sweet but the vegetables tasted like they were canned (not an issue for me) & not seasoned. Definitely not my favorite when it comes to taste! The cabbage tasted like it had Old Bay or crab seasoning on it which was too strong of a taste. I found my brown stew chicken to be dry which I've never experienced before. My rice was good but I prefer my rice to be more firm l, fine, and dry, if that makes sense. This was a pleasant surprise I stumbled upon while looking for a "not burger combo " lunch. Thankfully they had a sandwich board on the side of the sidewalk, otherwise I would have missed the location. Friendly customer service and inviting decor. One Price option for the lunch box was the draw for me, secondly was the expectation of flavor. Our tastebuds have been so ruined that I instantly thought the meal could use more salt but as I continued eating I realized that the flavor came through without the need of added salt, thanks on behalf for everyone watching their sodium intake. I ordered food delivery from here and I really wish the menu would have mentioned that you only get 4 wings in each meal. 4 wings for $15? Are you joking? Also the fact that you're required to select a beverage for another $2 on top of that, and your options are "soda" and "water". Why would you force me to buy a beverage for a food delivery? Luckily they forgot to deliver the beverages (lol) and I was able to get a refund. There should just be an option to select no beverage and not have to pay an extra $2 for every meal that you order. Today was my first visit but I will definitely be a repeat customer as long as the food and service is consistent. I ordered a beef patty and the brown stew chicken meal. All meals are $7, with the exception of salmon, oxtails and goat. The portion was perfect and reminds me of back home. Since I've moved south from up north one of biggest gripes has been the cost of food is high and the portions are small, NOT HERE! I hope this is consistent across the board with all meals. Mehhhh....I haven't had a lot of Jamaican food here in Charlotte however; I've had better here in Charlotte! The rice n peas were a little too soft (mushy) not dry enough and sadly lacked flavor. The cabbage seemed old, turned extremely soft as well and was on the edge of being salty. On the positive side; the portion size is huge (packed in a box with no sections therefore your food is basically stacked on top of each other). I had the curry salmon and it was delicious. I grew up in a family with island roots. Every summer we would get together for music, food and family. As I grew up I haven't spent much time with that side of my family as much. So, I am always down for a good Caribbean spot. Honestly, this is my favorite of the spots I have tried in Charlotte. My wife got the cocoa bread, beef patty, and Mac and cheese. I got the oxtail lunch special. Everything was great. Best Beef patties in Charlotte. They have a little spice that works out nicely. Bread is great. They also have some Mac and cheese that taste like a black momma made it. It's baked and cheesy. It was my favorite thing I ate. The oxtails were good as well. Tasted like my family made. I was hoping for ital or some West Indian seasoning on roasted veggies or tofu. Anything really..... i was underwhelmed. The reason i gave it 4 stars is because the gravy was good. The rice was cooked fine. Basically the sides were good. And the staff were so kind and accommodating. A grown man would b hungry still. If there are options to do extra large, etc do that. Tried this place a few times. It's really good for a filling meal that doesn't break the bank. The first time, the Mr. and I took our salmon meals to the park for a makeshift picnic, which the takeout boxes are great for! Twice I got the jerk salmon, rice and peas, cabbage and plantains. The third time, I ordered brown stew salmon, which was really tasty, but I'd recommend the hearty sauce on chicken instead of salmon. I can't wait until a nice, brisk day later in the year when I'll order just that, as it definitely has a warming, down-home feel to it. The rice and peas/plantain combination offer some relief to the heat of the jerk sauce, so it's a good thing it's piled high in the box! Portion sizes are always large-either one huge piece of salmon, or two decently-sized pieces. All meals come with cabbage and plantains, and one side, plus a drink. The only reason I give 4 stars is because on our second visit, the Mr. ordered lemon pepper wings, which he said were delicious. They came with fries and a drink, but there are only 5 wings in the meal for $7. That wouldn't be too bad, but compared to the salmon meals, doesn't seem worth it. The pic is of jerk salmon, but there seemed to be a smaller amount of rice and peas, so it looks like too much sauce in the photo. It was still really good, and I got two meals out of it as I did with the first two visits. Atmosphere-wise, it's in a strip on Ashely. The usual parking lot swap-meet and barber shop traffic are present, but that's what I love about this area. The restaurant itself is takeout only. There's always a Bohemian/Rastafarian gentleman selling goodies inside, and his conversation is nice while you wait. The menu is limited, but there are tons of specials. The main drawback is that there's no air which makes for a miserable wait (15 minutes for salmon orders), unless you choose to do so in your vehicle.
