I've been to Yau's a few times and at first I loved it. And then I realized that the stomachache the next day isn't (always) worth the good food. I have to say, the sweet and sour chicken is AMAZING. Basically every dish is like a hearty homecooked meal. But something about it makes you want to detox for a week afterwards. If you're looking for something to fatten you up and put you into a deep sleep, then Yau's is the place for you. But if you're looking for a meal that's going to make you feel good afterwards, I would go elsewhere. That all being said, the service is fast and the people are very friendly. Also, there's usually something good on tv there when you go. Everyone dining in seems to watch it, so it's just like home - having dinner with your emotionally distant family. They're super quick to serve almost any food you order. Their dishes about tofu are all good! Plus, the service is great considering it's a tiny and "fast-food" kind of restaurant. My friend went to ER the other day, I ringed them up and placed my orders of two takeouts for that friend. After around 5min the food is ready to pick up and the sweet owner gave me a brand new stainless steel spoon since they ran out of plastic ones! Big help in the emergent moment! Ever since Yau's changed management it hasn't been as good. The roast pork bowl, one of my favs, was still good but most others taste too salty. The pad thai smells like way too much fish sauce and also way too salty. Worst chinese meal I've ever had. I had ordered general tso's chicken from Yau's about a year ago and it was phenomenal. The chicken was fresh and crispy, the sauce was sweet and spicy but not overwhelmingly so, and the portions were enough for about three meals. I would've given it 5 stars back then. So today I decided to order from there again, hoping to get the same great food and portions. Unfortunately, however, it has gone straight downhill. There were only about five little pieces of soggy chicken, the sauce tasted like ketchup, and the crab rangoon was disgusting. I couldn't even finish it, which is crazy because I'm the type of person who will eat just about anything. I don't know what happened, but Yau's just does not nearly live up to the place it used to be. I'm very disappointed, and frankly kind of mad; it's not even worth giving them another shot. Simple, unassuming, and spot on! I was craving for a simple Chinese food that's pretty authentic but cheap. After doing some searches in Yelp, a picture of roast pork omelet over rice with some greens really caught my attention. Went here to get lunch... service was quick and the food was as good as I imagined when I saw the picture: the omelet was still a bit runny (just like I like them) and the portion was huge! There's no shortage of hole-in-the-wall, sparsely decorated Chinese restaurants in Columbus (or any other city), but Yau's is simply the best of these I've ever experienced. For $7 you can get a meal that other restaurants could probably get away with charging $15 for, and of the 9 or so entree options I've tried, I haven't been disappointed once. It is simply a must-try High Street location. Granted, their decor isn't going to win them any accolades (it looks like the world's smallest bingo hall), and their specials menu is confusing in terms of both content and price. Ordered the Duck Noodle soup w/Cantonese won tons and must say I have had much better. The broth was reminiscent of old broth sitting in a can you forgot was in the fridge. I had to add flavor from my pantry. I also ordered the Garlic Pork Belly thinking it would be hard to mess it up...I was soooooooo wrong! It was bland and tasteless and smelled like hot dog water. I only get one thing here and come back for it regularly: curry chicken noodle soup. It's the best soup on winter days, when you have a cold or the flu, or if you need a hug. It's a salty, garlicky, mildly spicy, yellow broth with chunks of fresh veggies and chicken and skinny vermicelli-like noodles. Just writing about it makes my mouth water! This place does a solid business and is usually pretty busy so I'm sure their other food is good too, I just don't ever order it. The space itself is a typical Chinese restaurant type ambience, simple tables and chairs, not much else. There's a parking lot behind the place if you can't find parking on street. read more

This is a charming, family run traditional Chinese restaurant that is not much on the outside but you are greeted by pleasant workers and amazing smells. Food is cheap for such larger portions (easily 2 meals to most), and their menu is filled with a wide variety of classic Asian cuisine. Yau's, you've been with me through the good and bad times. From date nights to lazy dinner meet 'n greets, stressed out weekends, and the "I'm craving some asian food" moods. Your saucy, sauteed varieties of tofu-veggie-beef dishes and beef with choi sum have always worked in a pinch. I always fall into the trap of ordering the bubble tea-- which always has some combination of lukewarm, tiny uncooked boba, chalkiness,etc. As I leave campus, my time there will be but a distant memory but your mediocre fare will always have a special place in my heart. read more

Yau's is my favorite Chinese restaurant near OSU. I am by no means an expert on Chinese cuisine, but the daily specials board written in Chinese characters is a promising sign of authenticity. Squid, salmon, lots of tofu: not your standard egg roll express. Most importantly, the food is consistently really good. They are happy to tweak dishes to your liking. And while many entrees are in the $7-8 range, the coma-inducing portion sizes make up for any sticker shock. Although Yau's is a simple setup, the pride of the owners is evident throughout the store. I should disclose that I am addicted to Yau's sesame tofu with Chinese broccoli, as this may impact my ability to be impartial. That said, Yau's is awesome. read more

This is a pretty solid Chinese restaurant. Has the basic Chimerican dishes- fried rice, wings, egg rolls etcetera but what sets it apart is the surprisingly robust menu of more authentic dishes. The reason we come to Yau's is the truly gracious, friendly service. It doesn't hurt that two people can eat for under $20. I'm a big fan of duck so I always order the roast duck. It's consistent and filling. Other dishes I've tried have been hit or miss but that has more to do with my palate I think than the food. When I lived on campus, I lived at Neil and 10th and Yau's was just a short walk away. It was the closet Chinese restaurant to my dorm, so my roommates and I would walk here to get dinner every now and then. And even after I moved away from campus, I continued to come here because Yau's is good and it's cheap. It can be found right on High St. at the corner of 9th. It was a close walk for us back in the day, but we also had to be careful. Sometimes down around this area it can get pretty sketchy. Random or homeless people just hang out along the sidewalk here, not sure why, but I'd usually leave my purse and just take enough cash for my food to be on the safe side. We'd usually call and place our order, then by the time we'd walk over there it was done. It's usually only about a 10 or 15 minute wait. There is also a parking lot in the back. It's small, but it really comes in handy if you want to stop by and grab some food. I've never sat in here to eat, because since I lived so closeby we'd just take our food home. Whenever I'm here now that I'm not on campus, I'm in a hurry so I just get my food to go. They are nice because they'll throw in some napkins, a plastic fork or chopsticks (whatever you prefer), soy sauce and a fortune cookie. You're all set to go. And the people here have always been very friendly and helpful. I trust this place for quality Chinese, which can't be said for everywhere else in the area. The menu is pretty big, too. They have all the typical stuff you would expect, but a lot of other interesting dishes that you don't find most of the time. Like one of my absolute favorites, the Chicken with Chinese Broccoli. The first time I ordered this, the girl at the counter warned me that Chinese broccoli is different - it's like long skinny leafy stalks as opposed to the "little trees" we Americans are used to. I appreciated her info and gave it a try. It's really good! It's served in a light sauce and I really like this new vegetable! Worth a try for sure. More menu items that are interesting (and I can't wait to try!): Chicken with Garlic Jalapeno, Bamboo Shoots stir-fried with Chicken, Spicy Garlic Steamed Pork, Mushroom Ginger Pork, and so on. There are tons of things to choose from here. I think that Yau's has one of the best menus, if not the best, of any Chinese restaurant I've been to. So much variety! The dishes are all simple, but it's nice to have so many options. It definitely makes you want to come back and try more. I've also tried the General Tso's Chicken. It's super good! Made just how it should be - nice and crispy, yet tender on the inside. And the sauce is a little bit spicy. I prefer to add hot sauce. I've also tried the Sesame Chicken and the Cashew Chicken. Both good, but I think I need to diversify and try some other items on the menu. The meat is pretty good here, which is always a relief. Sometimes you bite into the meat from a Chinese restaurant and find it all chewy and gross. Here they've got pretty good quality. My favorite thing about Yau's is the price. It was only $5.25 for a huge meal! But sadly, I think the prices have gone up to $6. That's still not bad, but I loved how cheap this place was, especially for getting so much food. You can also get a large portion of your meal for $9, but I've always found the smaller portion to be plenty. If you do come in here, you'll see that there's not much to it. There are a few tables if you decide that you want to sit down and eat, but the inside is pretty plain and it's kind of quiet except for all the noise in the kitchen. I don't really think this is a good place to sit down and eat. And they don't have servers or anything like that, I don't believe. I think you order your food, you pick it up and if you want to eat there you can, but you're not being waited on. I could be wrong, but I've never seen anything like that here. Most of the time, people are just stopping in to grab their food and then they're out the door. All in all it's a great little Chinese place. It's fast, cheap, and the food is good. It's frequented by students due to its proximity to campus, but I think it's also a local favorite to many people who love quality Chinese meals. read more

I've eaten takeout from here on countless occasions, and it does manage to temporarily quell my constant craving for Chinese food. A few of the dishes that I've tried are the hunan veg, fried pork chop, spare ribs with black bean sauce, salted fish fried rice, and there are probably countless others that I can't recall at the moment. A lot of the dishes are similar, just with different proteins. I don't think I've tried anything I greatly disliked here, but I also haven't gotten anything that I loved from here. On my quest for good Chinese food I took my fellow yelpers advice and headed here. Forget ambiance I don't even care about that. If a Jewish girl can get good Chinese food I'm happy. For decent, cheap, American-Chinese, you can't beat Yau's. I always think about trying something new, but the Chao Gui Dew is too good to pass up. Huge egg noodles with shrimp and the tastiest Chinese sausage I've ever had. It's a little spicy, which is why I love it, but avoid if you don't like heat. Egg drop soup is also one of my favorites - so much egg! Was getting sick of so-called "egg" drop soup that was basically just broth. To top it all off, they have your food ready in 5 minutes. The food here is delicious. Reminds me of the Chinese food you get in cleveland, ohio. Its the best Cantonese type of Chinese food you can get around osu. I had the squid with black bean sauce and beef rice noodles from here and they are delicious. The price is really cheap. read more
