Went to Ye Olde Tavern with friends during this years' annual Vermont trip. The cranberry fritters were only made more yummy by the maple butter - mmm mmm good! I had a French Martini, which was quite tasty! I should not have ventured away because the Cosmo was like straight alcohol and not drinkable. I was disappointed that when I told the waitress I couldn't drink it she took it away, but not off the bill. I am sure had I ask there would have been an adjustment, but I just don't like having to ask - expecially after sending it back full. The salmon appitizer and pot roast were great! The meal was a great size and cooked to perfection with just the right flavors -- yum yum!! I would definitely go again on a special occasion as there are a lot of options on the menu that I want to try. read more

It was our last night in Vermont and a local recommended this place to us. I am glad we took that person's suggestion. The interior is very antiquated but that just adds to the charm. Now onto the food. To start off, they served complimentary cranberry fritter which was just alright. My wife got the lobster bisque and she enjoyed it a lot as it was creamy and hot temperature wise. She also got the scrod cakes which were piping hot and you can taste the freshness of the fish. My son got the chicken pot pie which really resembles a shepherd pie because it didn't have that crusty layer that you normally find in a chicken pot pie. Regardless, my son ate it all up and said it was his fav dish this whole trip. I got the NY strip sirloin steak with garlic butter on top and opted for the mash potato instead of rice pilaf. The steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare for me) and the $32 price cost was so worth it. For dessert, my son got the warm chocolate bombe cake. I had a few bites and it was sweet but not overly sweet. Overall great meal and our waitress, Jossie, was very attentive and have a charming personality. read more

I came here for a dinner during a recent weekend ski/winter getaway with my parents. I was here three years ago and knew I wanted to come back to treat my folks. I'm so glad I did. I made reservations ahead of time for a Saturday night and had emailed back/forth with Ye Olde Tavern for a bit beforehand. They were very helpful in answering my questions and making me feel very welcomed to their establishment. We had a great time. Escargot was amazing. French onion soup was good. Cranberry fritters were a hit. I had reserved a prime rib for my dad, and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. My dad loved it, and he's usually very picky about how his steaks are done. Mom loved her seafood pasta. I had the salmon. All in all, it was a wonderful winter experience. Friendly service, sat in a booth by the window and in a room with a lit fireplace and a bar/tavern. It was a perfect time away with my lovely parents. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the area! read more

Our first dining experience at the Tavern proved a bit of a mixed blessing. The building, whose location dates back to 1790, has been rebuilt and restored several times over the years, and the latest incarnation is delightful, evoking a colonial-era atmosphere with a labyrinth of small rooms and lots of wood. The place feels good. The menu and spirits are quite diverse; there's what appears to be an good wine list, a few local beers (we loved the 1790 ale), and a dinner menu offering seafood, pasta and red meat. We opted for the steaks and were not disappointed with the quality and size of our servings; we found the filet cooked to our preference and tasty so as not to require any sauce or other cover-up. Orders come with cranberry fritters (delicious but even better if warm), bread and salad. The downside for us has mostly to do with the service. It took 15 minutes (we started timing it after a while) for our waitress to locate us and take a drink order. It was another 15 minutes before we got the drinks. After finally ordering, the salad arrived in a timely manner, and so did our entrees. But getting a check was yet another ordeal. The meal lasted longer than it should. We acknowledge the waitress was not entirely to blame - she seemed to have many busy tables to deal with, and that suggests management perhaps needs to get more help. Whatever. We're not into the restaurant business, and we sympathize with the difficulties. Our experience, however, minimized our enjoyment. read more

Showed up at 4:30p to try and sit at their bar, as I had been told by phone that it was an option to try for without reservations. The man on the phone was extremely professional and polite. With the restaurant being so popular by reputation, I was ready to be turned away- but what I was not ready for was the manner in which it was done. I watched as the hostess turned away a party of 3 minorities, a party of 2 minorities, then had the waitstaff escort a white couple without reservations into the restaurant for a walk-in seat. Of course, I don't know what the nice gentleman in the couple said to the hostess- perhaps he expressed that it was a special occasion, or maybe he knew the owner. She then turned my party of 2 minorities away as well, and when I mentioned that I had been told by phone that there were seats at the bar, she said that there were simply too many reservations for us to sit at the bar :) If you look at the other reviews mentioning how they seat minorities in the back room or in out-of-the-way corners, you'll see that the owner replies with righteous indignation that anyone would ever dare suggest such impropriety. And yet... I'm just noting what I experienced firsthand. read more

One of only a handful of restaurants open on a Monday, and a long walk away from our Hampton Inn hotel, the "oldest tavern in Vermont" is well worth the slog. The environs are cozy, with its fireplaces and uneven floors - a perfect getaway from a crisp or cold fall evening. I had the delicious French onion soup - with its sharp, baked Vermont cheese - my only complaint - get bigger crocks! That soup is way too delicious for such a small crock. I loved the pot roast (falls off like butter smothered in a savory, delicious gravy) and had a taste of the calf liver. Just great meats all around. The breads they served before and after appetizers were incredibly treats themselves. Service was exceptional, fast and incredibly patient considering we were the one of the last guests in. Cocktails are tasty and beautifully presented, especially love the drink menu with history behind all the concoctions. Then there's the food...second to none. From their Maple butter (that's so delicious I've bought a mason jar of the stuff on the spot) to their fresh, crispy salads, to their mouth-watering entrees (this past weekend we had the horseradish salmon and garlic/mushroom hangar steak special)...you cannot go wrong here. Everything is delectable. The squash and mashed potatoes that came with our meals - neither of which I normally like - were gobbled up within minutes. We dabbled with the idea of trying one of the other fine restaurants in town but can't bring ourselves to stray from YOT. Really enjoyed our dinner here tonight! Were lucky to get in with a late reservation after reading the great reviews on Yelp! I enjoyed the 1790 ale, it tasted like something from colonial times and my wife enjoyed her slow gin fizz. The fritters and bread were awesome and we had a baked Brie starter we enjoyed as well. I quite liked the salmon entree and my wife enjoyed her pot roast. My daughter had the steak tips which were tasty as well! We had the chocolate / walnut pie for dessert which was a great ending. I had dinner here on a roadtrip through New England. The service was excellent, as was the atmosphere. I had a seafood dish which was a good sized portion. The cobbler dessert was very tasty... yet I have to admit that while I enjoyed both dishes I ordered, the cranberry fritters were my favorite. They came with a maple butter which made me want to eat them for every meal. YUM! I am curious as to why a classy place like this would include a dum-dum sucker with my bill. We had a wonderful dinner and great cocktails! My husband had a Rusty Nail and I had a Negroni. Both very good! One of our dining guests asked for a vodka Gimlet and she said it was near perfect! I had the baked scrod served with sautéed zucchini (always a favorite for me), delicious. Two of us had the pot roast. Also a winner! Atmosphere was great as was the service! Quaint and charming atmosphere with fantastic service and amazing food! We visited Ye Olde Tavern for my birthday dinner and were not disappointed. The restaurant is an over 200 year old tavern that makes you feel as if you've been transported back to 18th century New England. But don't let the cozy feeling fool you- the staff here run this establishment like a fine dining restaurant. Dinner starts with melt-in-your-mouth cranberry fritters served with maple butter (delicious). For appetizers we ordered the venison sausage and the almond and brown sugar brie. As for the main course, we had the shrimp scampi over pasta and the veal medallions. All of the dishes were so flavorful and delicious, and the cocktails from the bar were expertly made as well. We ordered the doughnut bread pudding for dessert. I'm not normally a fan of bread pudding but I thought this was really delicious and filling. I also ordered the naughty chocolate milk which is an absolute must-try not only because it is so good but also because it comes in an adorable milk container! A must when visiting Manchester. The history of the building, the decor, and Michael the owner is wonderful. We decided to drive up to Manchester for the weekend from the Philadelphia area last minute. No hotel reservation or dinner reservation. Please call ahead for reservations and don't do what we did, we got extremely lucky and there was a cancellation so the two of us squeezed in, we also volunteered to wash dishes too. Lobster Mac and Cheese is flat out amazing. The cranberry fritters with maple butter placed on the table were gone. There was almost a fork fight for the last one. I dined here several years ago and enjoyed it very much....I went back last weekend and was pleasantly surprised that it was just as good as I remembered. First, I love the history of the place...it just has a great feel to it. Wood floors are awesome. The upstairs (where the bathrooms are) is a little creepy (in a good way). The light kept going on and off by itself in the main hallway (not in the bathroom) and there are a few old (olde) artifacts out there that are very cool. Haunted? Perhaps. Service was really friendly - my only complaint was that we had to wait for the check a little bit too long. The food is simple "American" fare - my companion had the prime rib (which they will eventually run out of) - perfectly cooked and delicious. I had the horseradish encrusted salmon - loved it. The meal starts with cranberry fritters and maple butter...bring it on. Yum. No room for dessert during this visit but the ones that were delivered to neighboring tables looked amazing. Prices were definitely reasonable - no problem there. I'll definitely be back here on a future visit to Manchester. read more

Stopped in after we went for a walk at Freedlyville quarry nearby, which was a really fun hike into a defunct marble quarry cave. You can find that hike using the AllTrails app on your phone. The tavern has a cool marble walkway which connected it to the history of the area's thriving marble industry. The people that greeted and served us in the tavern were very friendly. We sat at the bar and had a couple of really tasty beers which were a helles lager and a beer that was brewed especially for Ye Olde Tavern by Switchback brewery, a tasty amber ale. We were going to just have a beer and head back home to New York but the bartender brought us these complimentary cranberry fritters that came with a maple butter, and once we tasted those we knew we needed to eat something else there, they were so delicious. We tried a couple of appetizers, one was a cornmeal crusted cod with Old Bay seasoning which was juicy and seasoned just right with Old Bay. We also had an appetizer size portion of the lobster and bacon mac & cheese which was also very tasty. Sorry for the unsightly photo of the mac & cheese, I only thought to take a picture when it was almost completely eaten. We are already talking about coming back for a full-fledged dinner here, this place knows it's way around tasty eats! read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting Vermont for his birthday, and this place came highly recommended by our B&B host. I made reservations to sit near any of the fireplaces they had and the person on the phone assured me that they could accommodate that. I also told them the person that it was for a birthday. When we walked in, I made sure to tell the hostess that I requested a table near a fireplace. Unfortunately, the host sat us at a table where you couldn't actually see the fireplace due to other tables/patrons blocking it. I was disappointed, but as long as the food is good, it's not a big deal for me. We ordered a Negroni and Old Fashioned, and both tasted fine. For our appetizer we chose their lobster Mac. The Mac was very good and they didn't skimp on the lobster, which was nice. We received complementary bread and cranberry fritters. The fritters were fairly greasy and could have benefitted from being warm. We ordered the venison with mushroom no bordelaise and duck with blackberry demi-glacé. Both entrees came with a salad and two sides. I ordered the Caesar salad and my bf ordered the field greens. My salad wasn't very fresh and tasted very average, but my bf's salad was much fresher. We both ordered the same sides of vegetables and mashed potatoes, both tasted just okay. The broccolini came very overcooked. I often order duck at restaurants, and the duck here was cooked well inside, but the skin had no crisp to counter the fat. The blackberry glacé was delicious, but the duck itself wasn't enjoyable due to the skin. We both enjoyed the venison. Instead of ordering dessert, my bf went with a port and I tried naughty chocolate milk. The milk was tasty, and thankfully not as sickeningly sweet as I thought it would be. I wish they gave a little more, considering it a barely filled to a quarter of the glass milk carton that it was served in. I hate asking for anything to be corrected or replaced when I order something, it tends to take away from the moment, even more so, when there are a few things that are off. I wish the food was more consistent than it was. The meal came out to about $170 with tip, and I think we got a lot for the amount, but overall, a lot of the food was just okay. Our server was great and very friendly, and I appreciated the scroll she gave my bf for his birthday. The hosted also gave us a small tour of the restaurant when we were done with our meal because we were curious about the building. The service overall was great. read more

The atmosphere here is fantastic, but the food has become inedible. I was here in February and had the prime rib, it was adequate - nothing to write home about but it was okay. I dined there again over Columbus Day weekend with some business associates and the food had gotten much worse. Meats were grossly over cooked, the pile of mashed potatoes were solid enough they could be lifted off of the plate with a fork and the green beens were clearly frozen. We decided to order desert thinking it would be better. We inquired about the top selling item which turned out to be a Cranberry Apple Crisp. We received a pile of oatmeal paste with inedible whipped topping. Frankly, I didn't think it was possible to mess up making a crisp but they've proved me wrong. I don't generally write negative reviews because I realize people can have off nights, there could be other circumstances effecting the situation but after we learn the chef has been there for 20 years it's just mind blowing that the quality could get so out of hand. We spent $200 on a meal that shouldn't have cost $20. The location is very cool but I'm sad to say I won't be back with food like that. read more

Another home run by Ye Olde Tavern. I can't get over how cool this place is. So when we made the reservation, we wanted to make sure we sat at our preferred table, which was an old quilting table in the corner of the bar room. Unfortunately the host gave the table to another party, but we didn't mind. He was very apologetic but honestly provided such great service to us and was so friendly that we didn't mind about the table at all. The booth he sat us at was just as nice. We obviously had to order some good old-fashioned cocktails. My fiancée went for the Brandy Alexander, which was just as excellent as the last time we were here. I decided to order a Ward Eight, which satisfied the craving for bourbon and sweet in one good cocktail. I would love to try the rest of the cocktail menu but those drinks are strong - might take a couple dozen visits. First we ordered the onion soup, which was excellent. A really solid rendition of a classic, with the cheddar and taproom ale providing a good funk compared to a typical French onion soup. During our appetizer, we read about the restaurant's history in the back of the cocktail menu. We saw a little blurb about the third-floor ballroom with sprung floor and decided to see if they'd allow us to take a look. Surprisingly, the host was more than willing to lead us up into the unoccupied third-floor space and show us the ballroom. What an experience! The paint and floors are all original, and in the adjoining closet, you can see the original construction as well as some of the renovation work done over time (including old 1900s newspaper shoved in the walls as insulation). After that cool detour, we got back to the table for our salads. I got the house salad with field greens and blue cheese, while my fiancée got the Caesar with no anchovies (I personally would've ordered it with the anchovies... but I digress). Both salads were delicious, but I really liked the balsamic dressing and blue cheese on mine. At this point we realized we never got the cranberry fritters. The waitress seemed to be swamped but was doing an otherwise great job and, like the rest of the staff, was extremely friendly and personable. When she came to get our salad plates, we asked about the fritters and she said she'd bring them, but unfortunately we never received them and felt bad asking again. The rest of the meal was good enough to make up for it, but we were a little disappointed nonetheless. My fiancée ordered the mac and cheese, which we ordered as an appetizer the first time we came. Super delicious, creamy, full of lobster meat, bacon, and cheddar. I ordered the filet mignon with horseradish cream sauce. It was excellent, and I was really feeling like a good steak, but in retrospect, I wish I had ordered one of the American classics on the menu like the chicken pot pie or roast turkey - but that's also because I'm pretty hungry writing this review. For dessert I ordered a pineapple upside-down cake, and it was awesome. My fiancée ordered the mocha bombe, which was fun to watch get flambeed, but tasted a little too heavily of alcohol. It wasn't bad, but it was just a little too much. We also decided to indulge in the "naughty chocolate milk" - Godiva liqeur, Bailey's, Kahlua, coffee vodka, and milk in a glass milk carton. For some reason I don't think this is period-accurate to the late 1700s but it was delicious. So glad I got to return to Ye Olde Tavern for our second trip to the Manchester area. Emerging from behind my own stove for the last few months has been very exciting. I feel like a kid in a candy store waiting for the rebirth of dining out! Ye Olde Tavern was one place I was particularly looking forward to. My husband and I have crossed their doorway for their historic feel and delicious food. This is completely Tavern meets fine dining. Fine dining meets comfort food. But now, to enjoy dinner on the patio, overlooking historic 7A, was wonderful to say the least. We usually are sure to get different appetizers so as to have a variety, but after "stay-at-home" restrictions, we both delved into our OWN favorite cheddar ale onion soup! So perfectly rich and delicious, so glad we didn't share! As I remember, lobster is not typically on the menu, but alas, tonight it was and seafood stuffed at that!! Stuffing was delicious and lobster was cooked perfectly. My husband, had his tried and true, duck with blackberry and Grand Marnier. This is his favorite spot for duck and why wouldn't it be? My boyfriend and I were both surprised with how good Ye Olde Tavern was. We were expecting good comfort food, but it was so much more. The history of the building and ambiance was very cool. As a history nerd, I loved seeing how much care and detail went into restoring the building. The fire place and candles on each table made dinner feel intimate. Their policy of no phones at the table was refreshing as we heard people laughing and talking instead of sitting on their phones. The food speaks for itself. The cranberry fritters and chocolate bombe were my favorites of the night. The maple butter is delicious. I firmly believe there should be maple in everything! The chocolate bombe was decadent without being cloyingly sweet. My boyfriend loved the prime rib. He said it was the best he's had. The location of the tavern is great as it's in a central location in downtown Manchester. It was actually right in front of our Airbnb so we were able to walk there! There are also hooks when you walk in so you can hang your jacket and hat. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Ye Olde Tavern and can't wait to go back next time I'm in Manchester. read more

This place is amazing. The atmosphere is very cozy. You can see the colonial-era bones of the tavern but each room has its own theme. We were in the garden room, which had a nice rock garden and a small stove to warm us. The waitress, Tiffany, was wonderful and very kind to our son who tends toward asking a lot of questions. The hostess was also very accommodating, allowing us to make a quick reservation at the last minute. The food was superior. I had a hanger steak special and it was full of flavor and very tender.
