This place is absolutely fabulous. When you're in the Manchester Vermont area visiting this restaurant is an absolute must. I started with pheasant pate. I didn't even know there were such a thing. Flavorful but light. Then I had the venison which was very fresh cooked perfectly. I can't remember what I had for dessert but I know it was spectacular. We were staying in Manchester and when we read that Ye Old Tavern was their top rated steakhouse in the entire state of Vermont we had to check it out. Don't let the title 'tavern' fool you - this is a historic converted stage coach from 1790. That's not a typo. They have preserved the history well. The rooms take you back in time. The food is five star. They lead with a chefs special corn fritters with cranberries and apple butter. We had the crab stuffed mushrooms & Bree cheese with apples - both were exceptional. The steak was 10 oz - prepared with just enough seasoning and juices to give it a unique flavor. The carrots had a unique honey dill flavor (I doubled up on the veggies in place of potatoes) that I've never had before. Erin was a friendly, knowledgeable server who really knew the menu. My wife and I dined here on a Friday night during a recent trip. I had foolishly waited until the last minute to make reservations and we were only able to secure 8:15. It ended up being a good thing because it gave us plenty of time for sightseeing and the restaurant was very romantic ambiance wise. (The building is a couple hundred years old) The waitress was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. I had the duck in rosemary and garlic sauce and the cheddar and onion soup. My wife had the prime rib. We were both extremely pleased by the quality of the food. They also included nice touches, cranberry fritters and whole wheat rolls. My duck was tender and flavorful, my wife's prime rib was cooked nicely. Dessert was also a highlight. The local nuns of New Skete prepared an amazing pumpkin cheesecake. No one answered the phone at all. After trying to call this restaurant for reservation a few times, we stopped by the restaurant and were told they don't answer calls for reservations. The maître d' was rude and cold. This is an old and traditional restaurant, and now is known for a rude and uncivilized one because of poor service. What a shame! We will never eat at this restaurant for sure! No manager nor the owner of this business was onsite to greet me or spoke with me. I spoke with a female maî·tre d' at the front desk of your restaurant and she was very rude indeed. Before I stopped by, I called your restaurant at least five times to make a reservation but no one picked up the phone at the restaurant nor there is any answering machine explaining the problem of no-answer (for example, there could be a message saying that "we are fully booked, or we are busy and can't take your call at this time, please leave a message. Etc.) as if it were out of business already! The experiences of calling this restaurant or stopping by the restaurant to find out if we can dine there are very very bad and humiliating! They simply do not care at all about potential customers. You know what? We have plenty of good restaurants to go to at Manchester and other places in Vermont! For example, Mystic restaurant is amazing! After our disappointing stop at Ye Old Tavern, we went to Mystic down the street. Even though they were also fully booked for the night, the maî·tre d' at the door was very sweet and nice. She told us that we could make a reservation for another night and we did. We had the most fantastic dinner on the following night. Their cuisine is new Italian with the freshest local ingredients! People there are vibrant and friendly! You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck at this place; for the price of one meal you get cranberry fritters with maple butter (these are AMAZING and I highly recommend buying a mason jar of the maple butter to take home with you), bread rolls and a green salad with bleu cheese. We were here recently and thoroughly enjoyed its ambiance, traditional fare and warm hospitality. This historic restaurant (circa 1790) oozes bona fide old world charm with its uneven floors, wonky staircases, roaring fireplaces, and antique furnishings. The cranberry fritters, served at the start of the meal, with freshly churned maple butter were delicious. For appetisers, we sampled a tasty Lobster Bisque, a delectable Crab & Shrimp Cocktail featuring a piquant cocktail sauce, a Mixed Leaf Salad dressed with a zingy balsamic vinaigrette & tangy blue cheese crumble and last but not least, a Cheddar & Ale Onion Soup par excellence. The latter was served in a rustic oven proof crock bowl which kept the soup warm, the mellow cheese was nicely browned and still molten when served. The ratio of bread and onion to soup was just right, a hint of ale gave it added character and a distinct flavour. It was truly delightful till the last drop. For mains we ordered the traditional New England Style Scrod (a melt-in-your-mouth fish dish topped with cheesy breadcrumbs), a succulent Chicken Pot Pie (tender chicken cubes, tasty gravy with a side of mash), Ye Olde Tavern's signature Mac & Cheese (featuring chunks of plump lobster) and the New York Sirloin au Poivre (seared to perfection with a lovely peppercorn gravy). We were quite stuffed by then but couldn't pass up the opportunity to try their Hot Fudge Sundae. They came in a tall glass, topped with freshly whipped cream and a cherry, just like the good old sundaes of yesteryear both in terms of flavour and presentation. It is pretty essential that you call in a reservation for you and your party. This is a very popular place so you need to secure your spot! I have dined in the back room, which is the oldest room and is also the original dining area. This small, back room is very cozy and has an operating fireplace. The dishes are made to order, so any vegetarians can request no meat be added. I ordered the Lobster Mac but since it is made to order and I do not eat lobster, they were very accommodative and did not include the meat which I appreciated. We live in NYC and only get to Vermont a couple of times a year, and this is our favorite restaurant there. The complimentary cranberry fritters, beautifully prepared, reasonably priced food, friendly, cheerful service, the 18th century ambiance - a pleasure from beginning to end. After the fritters, we had the baked brie with brown sugar and almonds, our favorite appetizer. I had one of the specials, perfectly seasoned sea scallops in a lemon wine butter sauce, topped with Panko crumbs. My husband had a Fred Flintstone size slab of prime rib - advertised as a pound, but it actually looked like more. We had nerve ordering dessert after that, but managed to share a decadently rich flourless brownie a la mode. So of course my friend and I had to eat here when we were in town after reading all the rave reviews but it was.... Just ok. The best thing was probably the little yummy cranberry fritters they bring out. The salad was also pretty tasty. The service was attentive, but our waitress was one of those people where you ask for a recommendation between a few items and she responded with "it depends on what you like." Well, yes, of course it does, but I like all of the items I listed so that didn't help much. I ended up getting the chicken pot pie. It was... bland. My friend's chicken dish was similarly not very flavorful. We were really bummed as we booked our table out in advance and were really looking forward to the meal. One of our favorite restaurants in Manchester. We've been coming for the past 15 years, and not much has changed. Love the cranberry fritters to start with maple butter. The included salad with entree is simple and delicious. Entrees are not huge, but just right. My daughter always gets chicken picatta, and it's the only entree that we always think should include more chicken - it's very small. I am a huge fan of the scallops and the scrod entrees. My husband loves the venison and the lobster mac and cheese is to die for. Wine list is diverse and pairs well with the whole menu. We had the most lovely time at Ye Old Tavern, we can't wait to go back!! We made a 4:30pm reservation for Sunday evening (we were just hanging out all day and the early dinner sounded great, and was). The restaurant is laid out like a house which is really cool, with all different rooms to eat in. Our waitress seemed dedicated to our room and provided excellent service. She was either extremely well trained, naturally great at her job, or an actress ...either way...great and attentive service without being overbearing. Food was all amazing too. We got the lobster, bacon Mac & cheese (still thinking about it). We split the Sirloin with Horseradish Cream (there is a split charge, but very reasonable and we even took some home). They also serve salad, warm bread and some other yummy pastry (with maple butter) before the main meal. Our drinks were spot on too!! Perfectly crafted cocktails. We will be back! read more

My family and I are vacationing in Vermont and this place is right next to the motel (Palmer House). Was impressed with most of the Yelp reviews and decided to bring my family out. It was, by far, the best dinner I've ever had with my mom and dad. It was quite literally, the most relaxing restaurant experience I've ever had.. From the drinks, to the service, to the meal (and the check!) it was money well spent & it will forever be one of my favorite dining memories. Once you order entrees, you receive bread, CRANBERRY FRITTERS and a choice of salad. Obviously, the bread and salad are nice touches, but THE CRANBERRY FRITTERS were such a lovey surprise. We're they amazing? Nonsense! But it was a nice touch and was a wonderful add to the taste palate. While the entrees are fairly pricey ($20-40 each) the drinks are very reasonable, being $5-8 for a beer and $9-20 for a cocktail or wine. My dad, who NEVER orders a drink? Ordered the Side Car (he only drinks cognac) and liked it but thought it was a bit small. BUT he couldn't let my brother finish his Old Fashioned! He seemed to love it and kept asking him for a sip. My mom got the champagne cocktail which she liked and I had a basic glass of red wine. I'll try to wrap things up. We all got delicious meals-- I got the duck with the blackberry glacè and it was SO FUN!!! They light the duck on fire and it is just such a great time. The duck was nice if you like dark meat (I asked for it crispy and it was on point). Mashed potatoes and veggies are light but taste good and the amount of your entree balances it out. The ambience is one of my favorite things about the place. It's very old, which makes for a nice talking point, and it's spacious and dim lit in the inside. Fun, old candles sit at your table and I guarantee you'll have one conversation about old presidents. You will get that vibe (but it's a good one)! Net net-- if you're in the Manchester area, come through. It's slightly on the pricier side, but the drinks, service and food are well worth it. You won't be dissapointed! We went for the first time after having had a winter getaway at Stratton for the past few years. What a treat! My 13 year old son nominated it as "one of the top restaurants he's ever eaten at." He had the sirloin steak, perfectly cooked. Everything we ate was just delicious: chicken Marsala, Tilapia special, Mac n cheese. And the desserts! The flourless brownie - we were fighting over it! The service was just right- not oversolicitous but the lovely, friendly dark haired server seemed to know exactly when we needed her. This was by far the best place that we have eaten on our 10 day road trip. This place is a hidden gem. I highly recommend this restaurant to EVERYONE. Tom was our server last night and he was phenomenal. He was on top of eveything and very accommodating. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted by Jeannette. She is someone who should be representing any place of establishment. She was amazing and at the end of our dinner, offered us a personal tour. We were in Vermont for the night and this place completely made our trip. The food was amazing and the vibe is even better. It made me feel like I was back in olden days. Great food and amazing prices. My husband got the Lobster Bisque and I had the Ale Cheddar soup to start. Both amazing. I got the Turkey dinner, my ma ordered the vegetarian pesto dish and my husband had the special of the day which was Venison. He tried Venison for the first time and loved it. Food was just ok nothing special our reservations was for 7pm so like any good group we showed up at 6.45 only to be told very rudely by the lady on the host desk our table was not ready. We asked if we could get a drink at the bar but was again Rudely told that was full. So we stood in the hallway, our server did get us a drink while we were waiting there. Not sure if this lady is one of the owners or just a worker but maybe a course in customer service wouldn't go a miss. Birthday celebration with my husband at this local gem. The ambiance and service was top notch. Quaint antiques and vintage feel was exactly what we were looking for. We had done our research and decided to book a early reservation here over a few others recommended in the area. The meal exceeded our expectations even after reading great reviews....can't wait to visit Vermont again to return. We started the meal with the maple fritters-yum!!! I am local and go to the Tavern on many special occasions. This year I waited too long for my birthday dinner and after I called and was told nothing was available, Michael called me back and said there was a cancellation! Yea! We were seated at the most cozy, romantic spot! It's a small booth/table in a "pass through" room in the dining area, all to ourselves! And we ate like royalty! I had the NY Steak, cooked to my liking with the best creamy horseradish sauce, green beans and carrots and great mashed potatoes. My husband had the cider chicken which he gobbled up! Plus he had the mac 'n cheese with lobster that is to die for!!! We both managed to have dessert: mango sorbet and cranberry apple crisp. Wow, always consistent and delicious with great service.
