Service was good, but seemed to cater more to regulars (I get it). Prices were great! Real eggs were used in omelettes and scrambles! No liquid egg product in sight. Points deducted for the most God awful coffee I've ever tasted...even my 78 year old dad whose daily choice is Maxwell House said the coffee tasted like water. Additionally we were seated at a booth with a leaky ceiling. Drips on my parents and then on the table. We were in the area visiting the church my parents got married in 50 years ago as well as my mom's childhood home. If I were a local, fine...but I'm not, and so no need to ever return. read more

When thinking of a "yellow rose," I recalled my second Christmas prom in high school. Hubby (boyfriend at that time) presented yellow roses and asked me if I would be interested in going with him. Apparently, a yellow rose symbolizes "friendship" in western culture. Coincidentally, that will be exactly what you feel dining at the Yellow Rose Cafe, across from the CTA Forest Glen garage, in Jefferson Park. Everyone who works there knows their regulars! Although it was our first time coming to YRC, we were immediately invited to the party. We came at approximately 0900 hour on a Friday, and the entire venue was filling up quickly with working men and women, families with young children, and CTA employees and a police officer. Rosa J. and Daddy J. went with the "All-American" choices. I had the "3-3-3," which translated to "three (3) over-easy large eggs, three (3) strips of bacons, hash browns, and two (2) pieces of wheat toast with butter and homemade jelly." Just FYI, the bacons can be substituted with sausages; three (3) pieces of pancakes can take place with the hash browns. Daddy J. had the upgraded version of what I had, except all components came with the number "4." Everything was cooked like how your favorite grandma would have prepared in the morning. YRC is really a solid breakfast spot, in a close proximity to that annoying Driver Services Facility on Elston. If you've realized that you will never get your thing done over there, people at YRC will keep you company. We had two (2) breakfast entrees with two (2) servings of bottomless morning coffee. Everything came to $21 and some change. I would rather hand my cash to the lovely people at YRC instead of the tax-heavy Driver Services to get my out-of-state ID changed. read more

My husband and I came here for breakfast. We were served a nice cup of coffee which was a very good roast and soothing. I had the two eggs special with bacon and rye toast - a very simple dish with nicely toasted rye toast with butter; my husband had the corned beef hash with scrambled egg and hash browns. The corned beef hash was actually chunks of corned beef and onions; I think he was slightly disappointed as it wasn't the typical diner corned beef hash, but it was still okay. We also had a waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream to share and that was pretty solid as well. Great friendly service and a very cute old-school type of a cafe. I had the biscuits and gravy I always been a huge fan of biscuits and gravy even make my own at home which I like to add I make my own homemade biscuits. This place is the best hidden gem ever. I have been coming here for a few years now. Only open for breakfast and lunch, Yellow Rose gets my seal of approval. Located on the outskirts of Jefferson Park. Small cozy diner with counter service and about 5 or 6 booths and about 3 or 4 tables. They do a sidewalk special which is super cheap and comes with a ton of good. My husband always goes for the sidewalk special, never fails. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? So this place has a bunch of simple foods on the menu and they do it right. My favorite thus far is the homemade corned beef hash. I like it because you can still see the strips of beef and isn't mushed to a pulp. Love that homemade consistency! Pancakes are soft and billowy. Bless their hearts. I also love this homemade hot sauce they have made from this yellow pepper that escapes my mind, looks like mustard but is delicious. This place reminds me of going to my grandmothers house and having a down home meal, no frills. The servers and owners make you feel like you are at home. The patrons that go there are very familiar with the staff and popular amongst the CTA workers since the forest glen bus hub is across the street. We brought our son there and their child seats seemed a bit outdated but worked so maybe I shouldn't complain and they were so very nice to him. So about three weeks back, I was at the bar at Make Room for Truman in Park Ridge. Lori, a customer who was sitting a couple chairs away from me was chatting with the bartender, as was I. Well, i learn that she works at Yellow Rose on Thursdays and says their corned beef hash is among the best. So I decide to check the place out. So on 12/20 I head over and Lori is working the counter. I ordered the corned beef hash, which comes with eggs, hash browns and toast along with an orange juice. The place is small and pretty bust when I first step in, but it's coming toward 10AM and the guests are starting to head out. The wrong order arrived at first - but no big deal - it belonged to Rachel whom I was sitting next to at the counter. Country Fried Steak - another good looking meal that I'll try on my next visit. So my order arrives. The hash is good as advertised. I still prefer the CBH that I get in Northbrook over the Yellow Rose variety, but truth be told - the hash at Yellow Rose is the real deal - the hash I prefer is a cheaters blend as it's pieces of corned beef, peppers and onions merged into hash browns. This hash is a lot like the old "Broadcast" brand hash, but in a very fresh form with kind of a sweet taste. Real hash for all you corned beef hash purists. So I've moved in the neighborhood a couple years ago and always passed this place on my way to work. Finally last week I decided to check it out with my friends. The second you walk in I get that old timey cafe feel. Something you don't really come across too often anymore so it's quite the experience with the atmosphere alone. Then there's the staff. I have never seen more more attentive and friendly staff ever. I went here once and I swear I've got the theme song from Cheers stuck in my head. Constantly checking up and seeing how everything was going, and unbelievably friendly. I'm a person who drinks a ridiculous amount of water and I always get so frustrated when I go out some place cause I know they aren't going to keep up with me. Did not have that problem here. These guys are amazing! The second I walked in I already knew what I was going to be ordering. I'm a sucker for corned beef. My girlfriend told me this cafe was featured on Chicago's Best for it so I had to go for it. I was not let down. It wasn't that mashed stuff you typically get from the can, it was the real deal. In addition to the rest of the breakfast the special came with, the entire thing was incredibly delicious and filling. Been here twice and ordered the same thing but got two very different experiences. The first time would be 5 stars but the second time was closer to 1 star. First time super fast and food was good but thought my hash browns weren't as crisp as I would like so the second time I asked for them cooked more and she said crispy so I said sure. FYI crispy means burnt and the cook seemed annoyed to even do it and made sure I didn't mind waiting which I didn't. After seeing them I realized why they took so long cause they were so crispy couldn't even pick them up with a fork. Then they forgot I asked for cheese in the omelette then took it back to add some but it obviously wasn't melted and I was asked if I wanted it microwaved!?! NO! And now I am facing the cook so I can't even look straight ahead as I felt really bad telling the server forget it I will just have toast. At least the toast is always good and usually very good about coffee refills. My friend said to go elsewhere but it's close to my house and hoping today was a fluke and that the first time is more indicative of the restaurant experience here. I have found my oasis in the middle of urban living. Yellow Rose Cafe is my new home away from home. I grew up on this kind of food for breakfast, and it's not often you find a place that serves it up the way mom used to make it. There's bottomless coffee and large portions of food. The staff is so sweet and I felt like they adopted me from the moment I walked in the door. If you're bored with your smart phone, while you wait for your order there are a couple of newspapers they keep on hand for diners to skim through. It doesn't get any better than that. I had skirt steak and eggs for breakfast. I like my eggs over easy and my meat pink in the center. That's exactly what I got. Just to show my love, I made sure I ate every last morsel of my breakfast when I am usually leaving some hash browns and toast behind. You gotta represent when you're a newbie. Even if they aren't expecting it. You let them know your appetite is for real. In all seriousness, I cannot express enough appreciation for everyone I met while I was here. Surprised this place has a check-in offer... that kind of publicity almost isn't necessary because their clientele seems to be a lot of familiar and steady regulars that are about three generations before me. People literally reading the newspaper and everything...! We felt really out of place walking in there actually, but the service was friendly. A regular of my own often checks into this place on Facebook (so I guess the social media platforms do help!), and the specials they post on FB really caught my eye - 2 eggs + ham + hash brown + toast + coffee for just not three, not two, but just ONE easy payment of $5.99!! Can't get that kind of deal and variety everywhere, and certainly not at that price. The menu is just typical diner food. Lots of variety in the breakfast plates in the combinations o f sausage/egg/ham/toast/hash/bacon etc, all at extremely reasonable prices. I'm interested in trying a few of the skillets, which have a nice combination of not all totally generic ingredients. A lunch menu side too, but I didn't look too close at that. I've driven by this place a million times and never noticed it. But now we live in the area and my dude was Yelping new breakfast spots. When this came up, we decided to give it a go. We walked in and everyone was SO FRIENDLY. Not only the staff but the patrons as well. The first time we were in, I had the meat skillet. It was good, better than average. This last time we went though, we asked them if they could make a skillet with the much Yelped about corned beef hash. They were happy to oblige. It was AMAZING! As previous reviews said, it's real corned beef hash, not that canned stuff. As we were leaving on New Year's Eve, one of the staff members asked us what our son's birthday was because they were going to play it in the lottery. We were in a week later and they sadly informed us that his birthday did *not* win them the millions. Boo. Probably our new go-to breakfast place in our area!
