I'd seen a long line outside of Yellow recently and was curious to see what the hype was about, so I went for a chicken shawarma pita last time I was in Georgetown. It was really delicious - great flavors, great textures with the slaw and chicken and sauce, very filling. I also found the staff to be very nice. However, I didn't think it was a great value ($17 for a pita that size felt like a lot), and the layout is not very conducive to the crazy crowds they get - it's laid out like a cute cafe, but it's SO busy every time I've been nearby. read more

I had the olive oil cake and golden date latte. I enjoyed both, especially the golden date latte. I was concerned it would be very sweet, but it was actually just right without any modifications. The olive oil cake was delicious but I'd probably try another pastry the next time I'm back. It seems some of the baked goods and pastries are quite crumbly and the plates/trays they're served in are on the small side, so it's really easy for crumbs to end up on the tables and seating. For the water station, the pastel cups are fun, but it would be nice to dry them after washing so that way they're not sitting on top of one another while still watery. Visited Georgetown from NC this week and I am so glad I stopped in Yellow. The bbq'd harissa cauliflower pita was what dreams are made of-- even better with an additional side of labneh. The baklava mocha was definitely more walnut-forward than I had expected which gave it a sort of malty taste in my personal opinion, which wasn't my favorite. However, the halva honey latte was great. Expect to wait in line but the wait reflects how good the food is. There is somewhat limited seating inside so I took mine to go and enjoyed it at a nearby park. Definitely one of my favorite things I've ever eaten, wishing there was something similar at home! read more

The smoked lamb pita is also great but has a little sweetness to it. I like getting one chicken and one lamb to share with a dining partner. Came here on a weekend with some friends after hearing about tasty this place is. There was definitely a line out the door but it did move by fast. And, if you spot an open table either indoors or outdoors, I would go have another member of your party reserve it because it can be limited when busy. I ordered the chicken shawarma. Got hungry in Georgetown while running errands and decided to check out Yellow. The line was out the door (2pm on Saturday) but moved fairly quickly. I ordered a halva chocolate chip cookie and the chicken shawarma pita. I ate my cookie while I was waiting for my pita. The wait wasn't even long, the cookie was just too good. There was no seating inside and I couldn't possibly wait any longer to eat my pita, so I sat outside during the very chilly and windy day. I'm so serious when I say I took my first bite and I forgot I was cold. The chicken pita was INCREDIBLE. The flavors were out of this world. I want to add some sauce next time, maybe the toum or whipped feta. The price was high ($17 for the pita) but a lot of mediocre places are charging this much for lunch. After watching an episode of Everybody Feed Phil, we were curious as to whether the food lived up to the hype of the show. (I think others also were doing the same? The line was out the door and up the block, or perhaps it was a spot that I didn't know about until the show and the lines are usually this long? *shrug*) and Yup- lived up to the hype in terms of food nomness. Our shawarmas (I got chicken, hubby got lamb) were yum! Albeit a bit overpriced... $20 for a lamb but the soft pita bread made up for it. Hubby said he preferred the chicken over the lamb though, which I agree. Lamb was still good but it had a tart flavor that I wasn't expecting. We'll be back to try more of the baked goods. read more

Our city isn't really known as a foodie spot, so please heed my 20 years of DC knowledge, and 20+ years living abroad in Africa, North Africa, Europe and other places. Visited 44 countries and lived in 11. Giving a generous 3 stars for effort, cleanliness and friendliness. Shukran jazilan. (Yes, I do know Arabic.) The good: excellent service and friendly staff. Excellent, pull apart lamb shoulder sandwich. Falafel pretty good. The bad: Dry shawarma, not shaven, more like carved into chunks. More veggies than meat, and very non-shawarma spice undertones. Shawarma on the burned side (see image.) I was not able to get any breakfast items, so no judgments for now. Cookies were very salty and poorly flavored, evocative of a fusion style. Don't get me wrong, I like fusion and traditional as much as the next guy, but sometimes fusion doesn't work well. Example: Eastern Mediterranean coffee with cardamom works, but it doesn't work well fused into brownies. Give them a shot. Recommend coming early, as it's quite busy. Five stars for the overall experience although some things were lacking and the price is rather high. A friend of mine who lives in D. C. (who loves cafes and bakeries) recommended this place. We ordered a few things and here's how we liked them The impressive - Chicken shawarma pita The very good - labne and date coffee cake (very moist, nice date filling, crumble was good. My husband usually doesn't eat cakes but he liked this one); cappuccino with extra shot (nothing spectacular but it was very good and smooth); turmeric latte (my husband really liked it. The dipping sauce was a bit too much as the potato itself had a lot of flavor) Ok- orange blossom croissant (the flavor was good, but the croissant itself was not that memorable or out of ordinary. The interior texture didn't have much layers..) Space and service: The line wasn't too bad when we visited, and we were able to sit down.but it's a really compact place with narrow area to get water, silverware, and waiting for food. Service was good and fast. Price point is high. Chicken shawarma sandwich was $17..and it wasn't that big, and didn't come with any side. Even considering the location and inflation, it's on a slightly high side. Coffees are $5+, and the croissant was $5.5..and the potatoes for $10. I still really enjoyed it and will come back. Spent $50 on 2 pita sandwiches and 2 (mid) drinks, sat down to eat, was mid bite when one of the workers came and told us to leave because they're closing for lunch hour. Why would you not tell me that BEFORE I spent $50 on 2 sandwiches? I would've just went elsewhere where I could peacefully sit and eat my sandwich without being stopped and asked to leave mid-bite. However, I like Chef Rafidi so I dont want to give nothing less than 5 stars to him but the truth is, Food is alright, did not really enjoy the shwarma as much as I hoped I was going to. The pita is nice but the ambience isn't so great. If you are looking for a very loud place, come here, if you dont want much noise, this isnt the place. Also, its not a regular style coffee shop, no laptops allowed. Service was ok? We cleaned and wiped off our own sitting table because it was filthy and dirty. long awaited visit to Yellow but for the complete wrong reasons - I went because I saw something on Instagram for their coconut cardamom coffee, the cold foam on this coffee HIT the way only cold foams can but then the rest of the iced coffee tasted like someone's grandma sneezed seasoning and flowers into a mild cold brew - after seeing the coffee, I investigated and came to the conclusion I needed their zatar croissant. I've never seen something w this much seasoning and I am here for it. the croissant itself was delicious and unique. Only qualm was the labne filling was all in one area so after eating half the croissant like a FOOL I had very little croissant left to distribute the hunk of rich rich rich labne. This was a preventable error on my part - the egg harissa croissant though....this was the best pastry I have ever had. The crispy croissant somehow didn't taste burned at all despite its crunch. The egg was runny and placed atop a salty savory onion concoction. We had just had brunch next door but couldn't resist stopping at Yellow. We tried the "Urfathing" bagel (a Jerusalem bagel, not a New York bagel), which was good (I'd love to have dipped in it a little olive oil with sumac or za'atar though or in a little whipped feta or cream cheese), and the za'atar and labne croissant (almost too much za'atar is an apt description on their menu - it was wildly za'atar-y and yet still so delicious and savory). The S cookie is a favorite of mine (I had it at Albi when Yellow was just a popup in the Navy Yard restaurant), so we got one of those also. Everything was good, and I would love to return (truly hungry next time) to try more: orange blossom croissant, harissa egg croissant, date and labne coffee cake, lemon sumac kouign amann...?! Went on a Saturday and there was a line out the door but they are quick here so don't hesitate because it's worth it. We got the chicken shawarma, croissant with egg and zaatar croissant. For drinks we had the dirty chai. First of it was so good and the pita they make it fresh in their pizza oven. Chicken shawarma is so flavorful and damn good I wanna come back and try the lamb next. Dirty chai was perfect not too sweet and the spices were delightful. Zaatar croissant can be a bit over powering with the spices but it's soft and light. Egg croissant I enjoyed but it was cold when I ate it so I would suggest getting it warmed up. Overall I love the concept and everything about this place I would come back and try the cruffin they were sold out by the time i got there. read more

Loved the food here from the branding to the flavors to the decor. There's also indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered a chicken shawarma sandwich, hummus with sujuk, batatas and veggies along with a Turkish nitro latte that had date molasses in it! Everything was so delicious but it was rather pricey with the sides costing just as much as the entrees. You also can't work here with your laptop (no wifi anyways), so consider this a proper lunch break. I would totally come again as a treat when I'm in the Georgetown area, but for the price it unfortunately wouldn't be a regular spot unless I was just getting one thing. read more

This place is Cozy and vibrant in decor. I came here for breakfast and ordered the Turmeric and honey latte, very creamy and full taste of the turmeric was infused. Also ordered Sheeha a lamb meat pie served with lemons wedge and garlic your sauce on the side. It came straight out of the oven and the lamb is very flavorful just wish it was bigger portion. We also had the Za'atar egg croissant , make sure you like Za'atar it's very over powering the grill peppers and perfectly cooked egg just melts in your mouth. For sweet we got the orange blossoms croissant! The flor was amazing as it's a great finish to our meal, they had free filter water bottle that you can self serve which I love. I drove 40 mins into DC and out of the 100s of places I could've selected I went to Yellow as I've been wanting to try them for a very long time. I went on a Tuesday around 12pm which I would think is not a busy day of the week. I was looking forward to try the croissants and pastries and to my dismay they were all sold out! Also what was very disappointing that this being an middle eastern restaurant none of the meats were halal. I spent $40 on 2 cauliflower pitas and a coconut latte which did not taste like coconut. Don't walk, but run to The Yellow Cafe! This is simply the best spot in DC for brunch and lunch. We stopped in for brunch one day and we went in the next day for lunch & wished we had more days to enjoy more of the menu items. Where do I begin? This is what we ordered on our 2 visits: Breakfast: The Zaatar Croissant - simply delicious with a thick layer of zaatar slathered on the outside and a very generous labne filling (never too much zaatar). The orange blossom croissant - flaky with a subtle floral orange blossom flavor - just wonderful. The El Hanout Morning Bun - I would call this a Middle Eastern Cinnamon bun with a chocolate filling - absolutely delicious! The Turkish coffee Brownie packs a strong coffee punch as Turkish coffee should but it is moist and delicious. Lunch: The Hummus is an art in the Middle Eastern world - getting it so it is smooth and not too sharp. The hummus here is just perfection - smooth, creamy, not too tangy & the sesame bread (kaake) took it over the edge. The Chicken Shawarma - delicious. The Smoked Lamb Shoulder Pita was out of this world. Packed full of meat & full of flavor. The Batata Tots are a fry like you have never eaten before. They are slices of potatoes friend packed together in squares with the most divine sauce flavored with shawarma spices. Simply out of this world. The Lamb Sfeeha is a smaller serving but it is a perfectly thin dough which allows the meat topping and spices to just shine, along with the toom sauce on the side. The two things that was a miss for me were the Pistachio Basboousa - I felt it was too heavy on the olive oil and it needed some more orange blossom & rose water. I was also really looking forward to the "Baklava Coffee" but it did not really deliver on the baklava flavor. Will also give a shout out to the lovely decor & cookbooks near the tables. It creates suck a homey feel to the cafe. This is definitely not a an inexpensive place to eat, but all of DC is expensive and in our opinion the Yellow Cafe is worth every penny! I wish we lived in DC as we would be eating here ALL THE TIME! Please consider opening a Yellow Cafe in San Francisco!! read more
