Have been wanting to come to Yellow for some time and am glad I finally got to check it out! This place gets CROWDED on weekends with lines out the door so I opted to come on a Friday around 10:30am and it was still PACKED! Short line so I was able to order quickly and food came quickly but I just barely snagged a seat. There's a fair amount of seating but I would recommend coming at an off-peak time to insure a seat. In many ways the space is poorly designed. There is no real place to wait in line and not much room to stand and wait for your order so there are a lot of moving bodies and you're always running into someone. I ordered at the counter -- service was super friendly and super efficient/quick! They hand you a number for your order if you're dining in and will bring you your food and will hand you your coffee and pasties at the counter. I ordered the runny egg sandwich on the zaatar croissant along with the date coffee cake and lemon sumac cruffin plus a coconut cardamon cold foam iced coffee. The sandwich was AWESOME - easily one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. The zaatar croissant was nicely spiced with a bit of a kick but not too much and the croissant still had that rich buttery flaky taste, The egg was just the right amount of runny and the roasted peppers with the labneh added the perfect amount of acid and tang. The coffee was really disappointing. I thought it lacked flavor and was on the weaker side. The coconut came through but not much cardamon -- the flavor was very light and lacking sweetness. If I came back I'd try an espresso drink instead. The pasties overall were good. The date coffee cake was really tasty -- perfect for sharing and would go great with a hot coffee. The lemon sumac cruffin is fine but needs some adjusting. The lemon curd inside the pastry is way too much and way too overpowering. If you open they pastry there is a giant glob of lemon curd inside. The lemon curd is delicious but that much of it is way to much for the pastry. I ended up scooping most of it out. The croissant itself is lovely with a dusting of sugar and sumac. The lemon flavor way overpowers the sumac though. Overall I think the cruffin is tasty, but I think it needs some refining. I paid about $35 for a coffee, a sandwich, and two pastries which while pricey is probably average for your typical DC cafe. Overall I enjoyed Yellow. The design of the place is cute. The service was great. My sandwich was awesome and they have some fun unique flavors for pastries and coffee. Not everything was a slam dunk for me but I did overall enjoy everything I ate. if I came back I would likely take my order to go. This place is insanely popular which is wonderful but it makes for a somewhat stressful and chaotic environment not to mention it's extremely loud so not the best place to work or have a conversation. Yellow has become one of D.C.'s most popular cafes over the last few years. Visiting the Union Market location on a late morning during a workday, the cafe was packed with customers. Still, my food came out at an efficient time and the BBQ lamb shoulder pita was filled with several flavors from the labneh and the soft but well seasoned lamb. I had previously ordered za'atar, which provides a tasty combination of croissant and labneh. I tried Yellow Cafe in the first months of the concept down at Navy Yard. The pastry was stale and the latte was not lovely and it was expensive. A few years later, it's opened near me and I didn't care to fight the long lines to give it a try. After a friend gave a rave review of the pastries, I decided to go on a weekday morning. It was wet and gloomy outside, which was a great recipe for no line here! Ha ha I went with the chocolate halva pan suisse and baklava mocha latte. The flavor profile on the latte was boring at best. I got the baklava flavor, but it didn't jive well w the espresso or chocolate flavors. The pastry, however, was stunning. It's not too sweet, has a nice bite, and is SUBSTANTIAL. I've never had a chocolate pan suisse before, so this was a lovely first go. I'm a converted fan of the pastries here and will come back to try the others. Pluma is still my favorite bakery in the city, however, but I'm glad this is another option with unique flavored pastries. It was still so expensive tho. My order was $16 before tip. If someone can clarify if staff get paid well and receive solid benefits, I will not complain about the pricing. read more

Second time here (first was to the Georgetown location). The line was surprisingly long even when we came at 2PM, an hour prior to closing. I got the labne and coffee twist soft serve which was slightly too sweet for my liking. I also got to try my friend's labne soft serve which was delicious. I had a nice dinner at yellow. I liked the hummus and pita (warm, and soft, if a bit small) and the grilled cabbage. The whipped tahini sauce was delicious. I tried Yellow in Union Market last week and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I've been holding out to try the one in Georgetown, but it's always too crowded. I am so happy I decided to go on a whim. I went for happy hour, but really wanted to try the pitas, which they only offer for lunch. The server was very nice and decided to make an exception for me since it was my first time. The pita and the tots were delicious!! I am seriously counting down the next time I have the opportunity to go. I also think they are a great cafe for working from home or studying. Finally got to try the place that always has a line out the door! I was not disappointed with the wide array of food offered and drinks. I had the chicken Woodfired pita and from first bite to last, it was incredible. Perfectly flavored, good amount of meat. I went back the next day for seconds. It seems silly that they aren't halal given the menu and theme of the restaurant, and I sincerely hope they begin offering at least a partially halal menu. So happy that Yellow opened a new location in Union Market! I've never been disappointed in the food or pastries here, although I haven't tried the dinner menu. I do think that the coffee is not personally for me - the flavor is great, not too sweet and not bitter, but I've found that all of their lattes have a slight graininess that I don't prefer (I've tried the honey halva, baklava mocha, and the turmeric honey). I do like their unique flavors though! I also love that this location actually lets you use your laptop, unlike the Georgetown location. However, it definitely is always crowded, even on weekdays, and gets quite loud, so I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who wants to focus on their work. read more

Stopped in for the soft opening today after much anticipation and to be honest I was underwhelmed. I love cardamom, turmeric and various other herbs and spices in my foods. I've also had yellow before and remembered it tasting better. The service was fine - nothing stellar or terrible. It's a fast casual spot so no waiting on tables. It was also the soft opening so I was surprised to not have people popping around for feedback. It could also be that the soft serve machine broke in the morning which caused a bit of noise and distraction, but par for the course for things new. Also note that no free food or discounts were offered this day during the soft opening so we truly experienced it as consumers. We ordered the baklava mocha, coconut cardamom, breakfast egg pita and urfa-thing smoked fish bagel. Both beverages had bitter tastes and the coconut cardamom iced coffee was watered down. I'm not sure if it was because of the batching of the iced coffee or what was up. The coconut cardamom cream on top was delicious. For the breakfast egg pita it was nothing memorable. The smoked fish bagel was good, but kinda skimpy on the filling, the bread was overpowering. Overall the bagel did have a nice kick to it and well balanced. The space was cute and embraced the union market district vibes, but I'm not sure that this would be my new spot especially with café unido and blue bottle around the corner serving up flavorful coffees at the same price point. Will likely stop back in for some soft serve when the machine is back up and running, and possibly try out lunch items as I like lamb and kabobs. They will also roll out a cocktail lounge concept later in the summer upstairs. My wife and I had a fantastic meal at Albi a few months ago, and afterwards we were itching to check out the casual sister concept Yellow. We chose the Union Market location to avoid the parking headaches associated with the original in Georgetown, as multiple free lots exist throughout the neighborhood. We arrived at Saturday around noon and were lucky to encounter a short queue and reasonable seating options. Just a few minutes later the line was almost out the door and multiple parties had to wait for seats. The service model here is fast casual in that orders are placed at the counter, food is brought to your table, and you clean up after yourself. While fast casual usually indicates cheaper food, we ended up spending $70 for two dips and two sandwiches, so expect sit down dinner prices. Despite the high cost, we felt the quality and quantity of the food was worth it. We ordered the red shatta hummus and the charred onion labne as our "starters" and went with the smoked lamb and amba chicken pitas as our mains. The hummus here possesses a creamy, smooth texture and a comforting taste, which bears a strong resemblance to the exemplary hummus we sampled at Albi. We enjoyed the slightly spicy and tangy red shatta topping, which cut the richness of the dip. While we enjoyed the hummus, the labneh was truly revelatory. The charred onion and Urfa chili topping provided a great smoky and slightly sweet balance to the tangy, thick labneh. We have never experienced such a flavor profile before, and this is likely the tastiest rendition of labneh we have had through years of Middle Eastern dining. Of course, these paired excellently with the justifiable famous thick and fluffy wood fired pita, which bears a well justified $1 upcharge relative to the standard offering of pita chips. Our sandwiches also impressed. My wife's amba chicken pita possessed a heft and myriad of fillings which made each bite unique. My lamb pita despite having a more straightforward palate equally impressed with its abundant quantity of well-smoked, juicy, and melt-in-the-mouth tender lamb shoulder. While pricy at up to $20 per, the sandwich portions are quite generous and the cooks do not skimp on the proteins. While prices can run eye poppingly high for a fast casual restaurant, we truly enjoyed our lunch here and found the food very flavorful and made with care. We are already planning our return visit, though likely during a less busy time or to try the "All the Kabobs" sit down service for dinner in order to more calmly enjoy the food. If you can brave the crowds and stomach the prices, Yellow is well worth a visit to sample some excellent Palestinian fare. read more
