Came for lunch. Good selection of dishes on lunch menu. I picked Mongolian beef, with hot and sour soup. Soup came out quickly, it was hot and very flavorful. Mongolian beef was also fresh and very tasty. Pieces of meat were bite sized or smaller. Which I prefer. I'll be back, lots of other dishes on the menu I want to try. read more

Best Chinese restaurant in Saint Louis area! Love their vegetable fried rice. We usually order the Yen Ching Chicken. Egg rolls for appetizer. We've had other beef and chicken entrees. So so sad that the former BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT IN STL had stopped caring and stopped serving quality food. To my knowledge, they are the only restaurant in 3 counties that serves deep fried cashew chicken which I used to order at least twice a month. Now...the "chicken" is so stringy and tough - it's like breaded chicken jerky and you can count the cashews on one hand. They will keep on with this pathetic excuse for Chinese cuisine until they have to close their doors. Their walls are full of pictures of celebrities...but they are old and faded memories of a time when they had the best quality food and a caring staff. Why, oh why can't restaurants get this simply concept - don't lower your standards. Stick with what brought you success. On Saturday, January 7th I walked into this restaurant as it first opened. There were only two other people in the room who had just been seated. I was the only other customer and stood next to whom appeared to be the manager. I told him that I wanted to give him my take-out order. Without asking me what I wanted, or how large an order I intended to buy, he said "45 minutes". I was a bit surprised and asked, " are you serious ? ". He looked at me and without asking any questions repeated "45 minutes " and walked away. In my opinion he was incredibly rude and mean spirited. I will never go back to Yen Ching. Great Chinese food...I am always pleased with the quality and size of portions of the food . I usually get chicken or shrimp fried rice. The Cashew chicken "fried"is excellent. Have been going here 20 years. This business has been there 45 years now. I have tried other Chinese take ourbut I Yen Ching is really the best I have found in StL., an institution. Have been going to Yen Ching for at least 30 years, and they don't ever fail to disappoint. My fav is the Cashew Chicken, and I've been trying to replicate this garlic brown sauce ever since. Be aware actual restaurant pricing is more than double what is shown on Yelp! Based on their menu prices that's on Yelp my order of 1 beef dish, soup & an order of crab Rangoon would've come to $22.07 (before tax) & when I arrived to pickup my order the bill was $45.07 (before tax). So just be aware that pricing is not even semi close to what's shown on their Yelp menu. Definitely not worth the price. read more

Yen Ching is a family run restaurant that's been in business since the 1970's. Why do you think they've been so successful in an area of Clayton that's seen so much change in that time? It's because they serve delicious food, with excellent service. The wonton soup for 2, which is served table side, and the potstickers are terrific. We always get the Yen Ching Beef and Yu Shan Chicken because those are the flavors we crave after all these years. Yen Ching's recipes stand the test of time. Definitely worth a try! read more

I've been coming here with my family for over 40 years. Mostly on Sunday nights after watching the NY Football Giants (constantly) lose and consoling ourselves over potstickers and Mongolian Beef. The best general tso's chicken I have ever had, my bf said this is the best Chinese style chicken he has ever had. Lightly fried but not soaking in grease or overly battered. The perfect light crispness in every bite. Of course dining in gives you the freshest and best tasting experience but I'll still get take out. This place is located across the street from the Galleria, on the east side to be exact. It is unassuming on the outside and a little dark but not bad. I will hit them with the negative now, this place needs a good dusting. Now for the good: I was seated immediately and brought a water and a pot of tea, without even having to ask. That was unexpected but refreshing. The lunch menu comes with hot & sour soup, fried rice and an eggroll. I went with the beef udon noodles which cancels the rice, no biggie because it is filling. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. All told, I got out of there for under $12 (not including tip). read more

Best old school Chinese in town. They updated the storefront a few years ago, but inside still feels like the 70's, which I find authentic and endearing - but if you're expecting shiny and new - this may not be for you. Service is good - have had a little confusion over mixed drink orders, but it's not really a cocktail spot and they are still very nice and accommodating. The food is the star of the show... The sizzling rice soup is by far the best I've ever had. If you've never had it you should really try it. The spicy crispy beef is my favorite. The sauce is so good! I've had a lot of the chicken dishes and several seafood dishes too. Never tried anything I didn't like. Crab Rangoon is good too. They do a pretty good job with take out too. There is a little parking lot next to the sleep number store that you can use - so it's quick and easy to get in and out - unlike everything else on Brentwood. Ordered the sesame chicken lunch entry. Came with hot n sour soup, rice, and an egg roll (can substitute the egg role with crab rangoon for $2-3 more). Soup was okay. The rice was palatable, and the crab rangoon was typical. However, the meat in the sesame chicken was completely overcooked and inedible. It was so dry and had the consistency of shreaded wood. I nearly choked on one of the pieces of dried out shards of chicken. I paid over $13 for a lunch entry, that I can say is one of the worst Chinese restaurants I ever ate at. I have been coming to Yen Ching for a lot of years now, and they never disappoint. I brought a client from Hong Kong here as he was craving Chinese food and he gave it two thumbs up for authenticity. The décor is fun, with all of the autographed jerseys from various St Louis sports icons who have visited, and the atmosphere is busy and fun. Red pepper shrimp is one of my favorites as well as Yen Ching beef, and the sizzling rice soup is always a fun and delicious experience. We usually get several entrees and share them around the table, no matter what we order, it is always good. read more

Yen Ching's moo shu pork is served with tortillas (as burritos are) instead of the thin Chinese pancakes. (It's menu says "thin pancakes" but this is misleading, and, ultimately, their staff confirmed they do use tortillas instead of traditional moo shu pancakes.) The bottom line is that it destroys the dish. It certainly is not worth the $16.60 they charge for it. read more

Went to Yen Ching today for the first time with co-workers for lunch. It was DELICIOUS. Our group ordered: Crispy spicy shrimp: Delicious, not too spicy Beef and broccoli: The BEST Sweet and sour chicken: Good but too much red sweet and sour sauce. Sesame chicken: Delicious. Other notes: Egg rolls appeared to be over cooked. Crab Rangoon was very tasty. Fried rice was excellent. I highly recommend Yen Ching and will definitely be back! Pros: Mostly excellent food. This is my go to chinese place and we live in the city--totally worth the drive. The service is always quick. The food is great. Staff doesn't always speak very much English but they are kind and attentive and understand. I highly recommend the pot stickers, egg rolls and sizzling rice soup-- the soup is the best I've ever had! Menu I'm a big fan of yen Ching beef, spicy crispy beef, beef and snow peas or broccoli, hot braised chicken, cashew chicken and Snow White chicken, mu shu pork, veggie fried rice and veggie Lo mein are my staples. They have a full bar. Everyone gets hot tea. They are very accommodating to larger parties. They do great take out and can be delivered through 569-dine. The owner is very friendly. This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in STL! It's easy to ignore as its in a fairly nondescript-looking building, but we get takeout from here all the time. Pros: The TASTE! Love it, everything is very flavorful and always cooked well. We like their chicken fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, and pad Thai the best. Their to-go drinks are huge. Like buckets. I'm always happy to get a bucket of Sprite! Their prices are reasonable. Cons: the only thing I would say is that the chicken in the chicken fried rice could sometimes use a bit of improvement; sometimes it's rubbery and could be higher quality. I have to say, this is by far the best Chinese food available in St. Louis. I am not usually a big Chinese food fan because too often it is covered in grease and you can barely taste the food over the heavy sauces. This is completely different, their food is all very fresh and has the perfect amount of sauce and spice. The sizzling rice soup is astounding, I have no idea how they consistently make it so good. The atmosphere is not great. Although it is quaint, I do not think of it as a place to celebrate a special occasion. From my perspective, it is a great place to go on a low key weekend night or a weeknight when you are looking for more than quick take-out. When I was a kid, Yen Ching was the best Chinese in St. Louis. It was a special occasion kind of place. I went back today for the first time in about 10-15 years, only because Shu Feng was closed. The restaurant was empty, but probably only because it was a Monday night at 8 PM. The food came out incredibly fast but none of it was very good. Before dinner, I ordered a vodka tonic that was so bad I sent it back and ordered a beer. I think they must be using the cheapest vodka on the planet... or Chinese vodka? We started with egg rolls and spinach tofu soup. Both were just OK. [BTW - they have no vegetarian appetizers - no veggie dumplings, spring rolls, etc. The only veggie soup they have is the spinach tofu soup.] Then we had moo shu chicken and sesame chicken. The moo shu was just OK, nothing special. The chicken was supersweet, and so tough that the waitress saw me struggling to cut it and eventually brought me a knife. She stopped back a couple minutes later to ask how everything was, and and I said everything was OK, but the chicken was really tough. She said "Yeah, they probably left it in the deep fryer too long." Great. In other words, the food is overcooked... enjoy! Trust me - there is much better Chinese in St. Louis. If this is where you get your Chinese fix, PLEASE try Shu Feng in Olivette... it's a hundred times better than this. read more

If there is once type of food I don't like, its Chinese. Yen Ching can get me to eat some Chinese food though, it is delicious! My family used to carry out from here all the time when I was younger. After a long hiatus, we returned Friday night and remembered why we liked it so much. Everything on their menu is delicious, although some personal favorites are Mu Shu Pork, Imperial Chicken, and Spicy Braised Chicken. We also got adventurous and tried a new dish, the Sezuchan Shrimp and loved it! I would recommend it. This definitely isn't a restaurant to get anything healthy, but it sure is delicious. 2 down sides: Parking -- nearly impossible Service -- the owner is amazing and is there working every night behind the bar, but the waiters/waitresses are not the best. Ours didn't know they served cocktails (?) and kept trying to take our food to other tables. read more
