I know exceedingly little about Yoga. I'm not even sure what Yoga actually is. An exercise? A state of mind? A verb? All I know is that after a class with Alicia I felt fantastic. She knows what I'm doing with my body better than I do and can anticipate what my body feels like doing before I do it. I'm pretty sure she's a Jedi. I love Alicia and her yoga studio! It is so cozy and clean and right in my condo building! There are not as many classes as other yoga mills but they offer enough during the week to keep you busy. Alicia is energetic, informative and caring for your needs and conditions. I am so happy she can adjust her class to suit my pregnancy. The studio itself is not very big but it is perfect for less than 10 people. There is no hot sweaty yogies here so it does not reek off BO. I've been a pretty dedicated student at Yoga Studio 6 since it opened--about three to four years now, attending classes regularly. The first day I walked through the doors, I didn't know Iyengar from Ashtanga and honestly couldn't tell you the difference between bakasana and vrikshasana. I was a veritable, clueless newbie. Relatively speaking, I'm still a newbie, but I am able to do things with my body and brain today in my early 40s that I wasn't able to do in my teens. And I can definitely say as a long-time student that I have seen many, many other students transform themselves as well in the studio. What I love about this place is that it's small and therefore provides a very tailored, personal yoga experience. It's a great environment with a really excellent, dedicated, empathetic staff of very serious instructors who also enjoy having fun. If you're looking for a large class to get lost in, this place is not for you. Butt if you're looking for a fun, personalized yoga experience that caters to your specific needs, and that will help you reach new areas in your practice, then this is the place. You can expect very informed hands on adjustments, instruction specific to where you are in your practice, and a great supportive community of students of all ages and capabilities. read more

I've taken classes from 3 instructors here. All are good but Alicia is my favorite. She's extremely motivating, inspiring, and takes the time to give everyone feedback/corrections/modifications. The space itself is nice. I like this studio because it rarely gets overcrowded. There was only one time (out of 15), that it was a little tight, but certainly not packed like some Manhattan yoga places. Due to this, I find it more intimate. I like that the instructor can actually see me and let me know if I'm doing something right or wrong. The yoga here is not super spiritual/meditative. So if that's the style you're looking for, this probably isn't it. But I found it to be a good balance b/w stretching, meditation, and strengthening. read more

I second all the wonderful reviews for Studio 6. I bought the Groupon deal for $40 for an unlimited month of yoga and am beyond upset that my month is over! Alicia is wonderful and knew my name from the moment I introduced myself. I also went to Kristen's flow class on Saturday mornings and she also has the same level of personalization and attention. Most classes are small and allowed me to receive a ton of personal guidance. It was great! The community that Alicia has built there is incredible. A majority of the people live in the building, but everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming to an outsider :) I live in the neighborhood and feel so lucky to have discovered an alternative to the yoga room. I started attending 1 class a week at Studio 6 LIC because a friend lived in the building, and we made a ritual out of Saturday yoga then brunch. I started attending 4 classes a week, despite living somewhat far away in the Lower East Side, because the studio is perfect for me. The top 3 reasons why Studio 6 LIC is amazing: (1) The instructors are strong practitioners and teachers, kind and invested in their students, and quite hip. From my point of view, they are not part of what sometimes seems like a pervasive yoga culture in New York that is variously aggressively stringent and cloyingly spiritual. Alicia - the owner of the studio, a yoga practitioner for many years, and a fitness instructor for decades - sets the tone for a challenging yet nurturing practice. The other instructors are equally exceptional. (2) The studio itself is lovely and the class sizes small enough for highly personalized instruction. The studio is located in Arris Lofts, LIC, which is a quick subway ride from or through Midtown (7, E, M) or from Brooklyn (G). It's pristine and calming. The classes seem to range from 3-10 individuals, though the instructors and studio could easily accommodate more. (3) The students are wonderful. Many are residents of the building or neighbors, which gives the classes a genuine sense of community and group learning, though again, not in an overly cloying sense. I have found the sense of community to positively impact my practice, I.e. being congratulated on reaching goals and being supported to push farther. This place is great! I just started going here and already I feel like a changed person. I feel good about the workout that I get and the relaxed feeling I have after the hard work I've put in. The atmosphere is very calming and friendly. You feel so welcome the minute you walk in the door. The instructor is very thorough and works individually with every student to make sure you are in proper positions and getting the most of your sessions. This place is definitely highly recommended. I'll be taking advantage of their special for the new year. $40 unlimitted classes for a month....you can't beat that! read more

I first decided to try yoga as being a gym rat was not working for me. Yoga Studio 6 is conveniently located in Arris Lofts so I figured, why not? What started as a mere curiosity has now turned into a year-long journey that has changed my body and mind. I have found the cure for stress! I have been going to amazing and inspiring yoga classes at Studio 6 LIC in Long Island City - and they've shaped up my body, calmed my mind, and made me forget about my vanishing bank account. The prices are very reasonable (there's an introductory offer of $40 for a month of unlimited classes). But even more important, Alicia, the primary teacher, makes you feel totally relaxed. Even some people I've seen in the class who have ZERO experience have said afterward that they did not feel at all intimidated the way some competitive New York City yoga places can make you feel. But it's also a challenging workout -- a really muscular friend of mine (who could benchpress me if he wanted to) says he finds the workouts pretty tough. The classes are small (I have never been to one with more than a handful of people) so Alicia seems able to adapt her hands-on instructions to everybody's level. Her encouraging tone and sometimes funny (but always clear) descriptions of how to get into and out of poses make me laugh ("Just put your head into the toilet" she said to me the other night, guiding me onto the machine that helps you do a headstand without the neck strain). One more thing--the studio itself is sweet, too - high ceilings, no mirrors to make you self-conscious, and sunny wall colors. I always walk out feeling calm but energized - and happier, too. I don't think I would be able to get through this current economic roller-coaster ride - and my own job stress -- without these yoga classes. Watch out though, it's addictive. Classes are small and intimate and adaptive to many different practice levels. This is very nice little studio. I've been practicing vinyasa yoga for nearly 3 years and have felt that my practice has stagnated. While this studio does not teach a vinyasa style. I've learned more in the in the few classes I've attended here than I had learned at my other studio in a couple years. Alicia is a thoughtful, supportive and attentive instructor. Pointing out adjustments to to the class on an individual basis. She corrected basic flaws in my practice that I've had for years in my first few classes. I've only been there one time but everyone else seemed to be regulars, and even in the level 2 classes they were a mix of ages and abilities. The environment is incredibly welcoming, the staff (Alicia,Bert,Charles and everyone else) wonderful and nurturing, and the classes are completely free of the yoga-snobbery , that kept me away from other studios. Alicia is a wonderful teacher with a great sense of humor (rare in yoga world) and a deep knowledge of alignment and areas of the body that need strengthening. I travel from Jackson Heights to LIC almost every Sunday because her class is the best one I've found in Queens since I moved here from Brooklyn nine years ago. I am about to sign up for Medicare and can do handstands and other challenging poses that I wasn't able to sustain in previous classes. The feeling that deterioration is not inevitable is a huge boost mentally as well as physically! Alicia teaches to all ages and abilities. She is very supportive but also assumes that you will want to challenge yourself when you are ready to so do. I don't think I've ever received such focused and helpful tips on how to deepen my practice. I also appreciate the overall vibe in the studio, which is very welcoming and unpretentious. Love Alicia and her classes. I have been doing yoga for 15 years in different studios in the city that all seem very impersonal to me, I only go to Studio 6 now for about 3 years. In this class I get one on one attention, groups are small, Alicia corrects and interacts with everybody in the class all the time, as a teacher she intimately knows your body, your weaknesses, your strengths, and your limits, and has helped me make the best of it. I get a serious workout in the Monday class, mostly core Pilates work mixed with yoga postures, class goes by so fast and is very enjoyable. This class has given me a lot of strength and stamina. Other teachers in the studio are great too like Charles open Jivamukti class. Alicia is super committed to her studio and her students and I'm always happy to see the usual familiar faces in class. read more

Alicia is such a wonderful instructor! I haven't been to any of the other instructor's classes but I've gone to a few classes with my father there when Alicia was teaching. She is a really kind woman and is very talented. The studio is super clean and I think cozy is the best way to describe it. The trinkets on the ceiling are beautiful. Also, the prices are wonderful for the quality! They also have specials that go on all of the time. My dad has been going here religiously for a few years and he went from not being able to bend his knees (from being so stiff and lifting weights for so many years) to doing head stands. I give so much credit to Alicia because I would never have imagined my father doing things like this in a million years lol. I've taken yoga classes at other places and even in school, but Alicia definitely takes yoga to another level and challenges you...while also motivating you and encouraging you.
