This place has been remodeled since the last time I was there. For that they receive 1 star. I walked into a 15% full restaurant and I was the only one sitting at the sushi bar. The chef was preparing a few to-go orders and a few for the few tables. I asked for a beer and 10min later I received a large cold bottle of beer and an icy mug - for that they receive a total of 2 stars. I ordered 2 rolls from the chef and he acknowledged. With a cold beer getting warm and watching a ball game, a total of 30min later and many orders getting out, I asked if my food was coming up? He told me that I'm next (sounds reasonable for such few people inside the place and many to-go orders). By now I'm nursing my beer bc I don't want to finish it before my food arrives. At 45min the chef is preparing an other large to-go order. So my order was not next - back down to 1 star for lying to me. As he was finishing up that large to-go order the sous chef in the back brought the front Chef 3 orders of tempura shrimp - since I didn't order anything with shrimp - I dropped down $12 for my 1/2 finished-now warm beer and left. For this experience I will only offer 1/2 STAR. Yokozuna: Listen - if you're partially full restaurant is not prepared to manage your phone orders and your seated orders, please let your customer know. Customers do understand - Never put off your customer and never lie to them. It cost me $12 to never come back a restaurant. read more

Waited an hour and a half to be told our sushi hadn't even been started yet and if we wanted to cancel our order. They were too occupied with to go orders to prepare the orders for guests who were dining in. We were more than patient considering they had only 1 server but we will not be back anytime soon if ever. read more

Food was ok, horrible customer service though. No plates for appetizers, no refills, no check in to see if we needed anything. We didn't even get our bill - we had to go to the front and ask for it. BEST TEMPURA SHRIMP ROLLS EVER! Only thing I'm not a fan of is uni rolls. Feels like you're going to gag as you soon as you swallow! Saki with plum wine is pretty BOMB! I walked in here on a Monday about 8:45pm and sat at the sushi bar. The place was empty with only 1 other person at the bar as well. Excellent greeter/waitress who had showed me a few lo-carb rolls which I had requested to chose from. She was familiar with which pages of the menu they were on as well as what the roll included. I liked that they had t.v's around the whole room all with different shows on. I'm looking forward to bringing my bf with me next time and to try the New White Dragon roll! read more

The food here is decent for the price. when I eat sushi I like to make a sauce to dip it into. I use lemons,sirachi,and soy sauce. When I asked for more lemons the owner looked at me crazy. And he said I pay $1 dollar a lemon.I said ok bring me 2 full lemons. So he charged me for lemons in which this is new to me. If the cost of lemons affects his business then maybe it would be smarter to raise the price of food so your not upset about someone asking for extra lemons and then charging them.Im also the owner of a business so I understand the overhead and cost to thrive. I thought it was not professional to first get upset and second charge me. None the less I had to think about the business aspect and he's wrong all the way around. Used to work nearby and had the lunch special several times. Always filling but somewhat expensive at around $16 for a three item lunch special with a drink. Went back to eat there for dinner last night for the first time in months and ordered the Chirashi bowl. The sashimi was quality but the rice underneath was barely even sushi rice! Mostly regular white rice with a small amount of vinegar, salt, and sugar added but nowhere near the texture sushi rice is known for having. I took one bite and didn't touch it for the rest of our dinner. We ordered bento boxes, my husband got his served right away while mine and my son's languished on the counter for ten minutes waiting for two California rolls and a spicy tuna roll. We we sat & helped by a middle age Mexican man that treated us so horribly! 1. I asked for strawberry lemonade, he replied with, this isn't. High class place & didn't offer me the regular lemonade they did have!! So stiff... 2. After I received my lemonade I drank and my husband drank, HE then informed me the drinks were not for sharing!! Stopped by after reading the Yelp reviews. I had been here some time ago but that was before I was a Yelper. Walked in on a weekday just after 5PM and the place was empty. "Ok", I thought "I'm just early." Was greeted by the waitress but not the chef, he seemed busy. I sat at the bar and ordered an iced tea and a Miso soup. The place smelled of beer and the serving mats were sticky. The dipping bowl had some sort of residue on the underside that you could feel but was not visible. I soon found all the rest of the serving dishes had the same residue. At first I thought it was from the chef's fingers smearing rice on the underside as he handed out the plates, but that did not explain the dishes brought out by the waitress. Maybe it was a residue from the soapy sink? There was a guy doing a ton of dishes at the time. The chef ( the owner) asked "what do you want?" No smiles or chit chat. I do sort of a trinity thing with sushi bars: salmon sushi with sesame seeds and green onions on top, spicy tuna hand roll, and steamed Gyoza. I can pretty much tell from those items how a place differs from the competition. I ordered the salmon and it was good. The portion size was larger than usual and not chewy. The iced tea was flavorless and the Miso tasted like lukewarm dishwater. The spicy tuna was dug out of a Tupperware container and spread onto the roll. I asked the chef when it was made and he said he did it himself this morning. Too bad the tuna was room temperature. I had no idea how long it had been out of the chiller. The Nori was not fresh. I had the Gyoza steamed. It was not quite done and doughy. The beef and vegetable filling was also tasteless. Chef: "Are you done?" Me: "Yep, cash me out" Seems he was in a hurry and had to hit the bank, as he walked out with the drop bag in his hand while I was waiting for the bill. read more

Probably one of the most unpleasant experience here, it felt like they didn't even want us to be there. We got seated right away because it wasn't busy, right when we sat down our waitress asked for our drinks & after she got our drinks she asked if we were ready & we weren't ready. So she gave us like another 30 seconds until she asked if we were ready again & we weren't ready, she then gave us another 30 seconds to look at our menu until she asked if we were ready again. At this point I just felt so rushed so I just picked 2 items off their happy hour menu & my friend got the chicken bowl. The happy hour menu has a really good selection, most of the appetizers are $4 and rolls were $5! Our food came out and I asked our waitress if she could grab me some eel sauce, spicy mayo, extra ginger and a fork for my friend... But she walked away when I only said eel sauce and spicy mayo.. She literally just walked away when I was in the middle of talking to her, but I let that pass, it wasn't a big deal. They put so much tempura on my mixed tempura because my veggies weren't cooked all the way and the tempura layer was super thick. I got the Dragon Roll and the roll pretty much fell apart when I picked it up because it was so loose, it made it really difficult to eat. I needed a refill on my water, but no one came to refill it, I even put the empty cup on the edge of the table to make it visible for the servers to see, but no one came & when someone finally came they refilled my water and they took my friend's Sprite without asking him what it was, so they mixed water in with his Sprite. The lack of carelessness was really upsetting. I was planning on getting tempura ice cream, but they gave us the bill without even asking if we wanted dessert or if we wanted anything else, so I just passed. We were one of the original diners when Yoshi first opened Yokozuna's. We miss you Yoshi and the quality of your food. Sad to say, but it was lost when he left the business. However, we just got back and are VERY impressed with the freshness of the salads, sushi/sashimi, and the bentos! Got introduced to Joon(?), the newest owner, and we wish him well, because, again - the food quality is excellent!! I gave them 4-stars, 'cuz service is still needing work...but, that won't keep us away since the food's SO good!! We have a date to be back in two weeks...gotta save up some $$ for the plum sake...oh, and the food, too : ) UPDATE: Circumstances kept me away from returning in the two weeks I said we'd return. BUT, I made it a point to eat here tonight (August 26th). Mid-week business at restaurants can be bad news for the owners, so that's when I typically dine out. But truthfully, the main reason is because I can interact more freely with the staff. Tonight was no exception. For starters, I learned that Jun is how you spell the owner's name : ) Taking a piece out of my dining past, I asked Jun to dictate tonight's menu. I wasn't disappointed. He served up three non-menu sashimi (my preference) dishes and three non-standard sushi dishes. One word sums it all up - AWESOME!! I love it when a chef has a passion for his art and the science of food!! The main reason I like having the chef make the selections is that, between discussions about the dishes, the chef will hone in on a particular flavor profile. When executed correctly, the outcome is memorable and is what brings me back! As a bonus, foodies will appreciate that Jun DEFINITELY knows how to plate his dishes. Each one was served on appropriate and DIFFERENT serveware. Attention to detail ... gotta love it!! I live in San Diego, and was visiting Oxnard with a friend while working at the Pt. Huenem base. Having a Sushi craving, we drove around town checking out the locations listed in my GPS. Unimpressed with the locations we saw (exterior scared us), we pressed on to find Yokozuna. We arrived just before 5pm, which was when they opened for the evening (Saturday 5/9). We were the first to arrive, and prompty sat at the Sushi bar. Charlie (mentioned in the previous reviews) was our chef, and we quickly got aquainted. We ordered a couple of tall Asahi beers, and a various selection of Sushi from memory (of past sushi bar visits). My mother is Japanese, and I speak fluently (though I don't look like I would). Charlie spoke Japanese fluently as well, and we all quickly formed a great rapport. Charlie and the other Sushi chef joined us for a drink, and the Sushi quality was amazing. He made us a few specialty dishes of his own choosing, and they were excellent. I don't recall the name, but definately recommend the friend jalapeno dish with sauce (they hit the spot). I visit Oxnard once every quarter, and Yokozuna just became the highlight of my trips. They didn't have every single type of Sushi we requested, but that was due to unavailability due to either local quality or sources. I find that more respectable than to have something that doesn't cut it (and I would know). D-Lish! We went on a Sunday afternoon just before the dinner rush. They were pretty empty when we got there, and easily accommodated our group of ten. They have some outdoor seating but it's mostly indoor. The atmosphere was nice and the owner was one of the sushi chefs! I ordered the veggie tempura as an appetizer and some sushi. The tempura was slightly over cooked and I didn't like that they gave me onions =( so that's why they only get four stars. I wish yelp had half stars as an option because Yokozuna would be getting four and a half. Anyhow, the salmon sashimi was cut into many little pieces rather than 5 huge pieces. I liked this because it was easier to share. We were rocking family style =) As far as quality the Salmon was super fresh and basically fell apart in my mouth! All of the rolls we ordered were absolutely delicious and pretty (presentation counts!!) If I lived here, I could easily foresee being a regular at Yokozuna. ( My friends already are) They also had cute mixed drink holders that keep the ice separate from the liquor so even if your drink sits for a minute, it never gets watered down. I can't even begin to explain how much I love sushi. Seriously, I love it so much. So when I go on a date with someone who loves as much as I do, I know that I'm going to have a great time. This little sushi bar is located in a strip mall and it has that mom & pop decor. Lots of bamboo, Japanese prints of samurai warriors, I didn't see a single picture of a ninja anywhere so I knew I was going to have a great time. I only wish the bar wasn't so full, we had to sit in a booth. I think the staff kind of forgot about us because we were out of sight. I wasn't in the mood for rolls, and I asked if we could order sashimi instead. The cuts of fish were excellent, yellow tail, salmon albacore all sliced and served to perfection. Yummy, yummy, yummy! By the time we finished our meal the waiting area had filled up considerably, this place is popular. Minus 1 star for the staff's service that was slow and forgetful. read more

How can I review the contrast between the Illegitimacy of yet another Korean-owned sushi restaurant located in the 805, a city overrun by large corporate chain restaurants with a pipsqueak amount of ma-and-pa/hole-in-the-wall businesses? Ah, the challenge begins... Sushi- 4 Service- 4 Price- 4 Ambiance- 3 Overall- 4 A fun sushi experience and honestly A MUCH BETTER ONE than Anaba and Sumo Sushi. (I still don't get the hype... they're both subpar and overpriced.) Yokozuna wasn't crowded, we were 1 out of 4 parties in total, speed of the service was acceptable, not stellar, but her rapport was great. There was just one server and 2 sushi chefs behind the counter. The rolls varied from your typical crunch roll to the inventive Geisha roll, which is quite a sexy roll I might add. The baked baby lobster roll was yummy as well. Lots of options on the menu with appetizers, rolls, bento boxes, and udon/ramen noodle soups. THEY ACTUALLY DEEP-FRY THEIR DEEP-FRIED ICE CREAM, which is much appreciated since other restaurants simply roll them in cornflakes and serve them as cereal-covered snowballs. No sushi restaurant deserves a 5-star review unless a serious omakase is offered or at very least, owned by Japanese people. Still Yokozuna is a notably great experience and they even took a polaroid of our party to stick up on their wall to say we've been there. Oiishi-des! read more

I am a certified Sushi head, have been for years. I used to live in L.A. so I am used to enjoying the best of the best Sushi in the country. While I wouldn't give this place 5 stars if it were on Ventura Blvd or the Westside, for Oxnard, it's awesome. Best sushi I've had in Ventura County. I sat at the bar, both the waitress and the Chef, Jun, were very nice and attentive. The selection is lacking (e.g., I asked if Jun if he has Kanpachi or ever gets it and he said he would but it wouldn't sell to the Oxnard crowd, so it's not the restaurant's fault, it's the lack of demand, also I'm glad he doesn't just buy it and let it sit for days until it's ordered, I would rather have fresh yellowtail than old Amberjack), but the fish was fresh and very well prepared. The Yellowtail belly was the standout. I did have a Spicy Tuna roll, which was very good. They have a variety of rolls that are mostly just variations of the same few themes; avocado, tuna, salmon, California Roll, Dynamite, etc. I didn't try any of the elaborate rolls as that's not my thing, but they did look very good and fresh. If you can't make it to L.A. but are in the mood for fresh, modest sushi at reasonable prices, Yokozuna will hit the spot. read more

Food was decent; about average, but wasn't really memorable or worthy of a return trip. We ordered the Vegetable Roll, R19 Volcano Roll, R25 Sunset Roll, and the R40 Crunch California roll. The temperature differences in the Volcano Roll were disconcerting, ranging from slightly-warm in some places to ice cold in others. The first two rolls were brought to us without wasabi or ginger, but the waiter asked us if we wanted some after we got our rolls, so we did get some brought to the table. The ambiance was terrible. There was a table of very loud, shouting patrons next to us, and the employees had "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction on endless repeat the entire time we ate here today. It played 3.5 times before the waiter even came to take our order, then it played 1.5 times before we got the first of our rolls. The song played once more, then blissfully switched to a different song, which, after 10 seconds, someone promptly switched RIGHT BACK to "What Makes You Beautiful", AGAIN. It played 10 more times while we ate. The same 1D song, over and over and over. 15 times total. Even the table of loud patrons commented on the song playing repeatedly. I had nothing against the song when I walked in today, but after being subjected to 15 replays in a row, I never want to hear it again. I will never be returning to Yokozuna Sushi, because being subjected to auditory torture for average-tasting, pricy food is just not worth it to me. There are other sushi places in the area that perhaps have more respect for their customers. read more

It was made within 10 minutes. You can judge from the picture how 10 minutes of work was put in. Mixed Tempera was very doughy and looked like doughnuts. A shrimp tempura should not taste and look like it was coated with pancake batter. The Baked Salmon Roll was drenched with different sauces on top and didn't even look appetizing and it wasn't even that good. The pickled ginger and wasabi was slapped on the plate not even in a different container contaminating the rolls. What if the person was allergic to ginger or spice? I live and worked near this place and know the owner. Him as a customer where i work at is the same as how he treats you as a customer in his restaurant. Also both of my orders are in the "Happy Hour" section within the time frame of 3pm-7pm and i have ordered before 7pm and charged full price or the price it is on the regular menu. I came when it first open. I was the first table in the building.The Waiters we has more than one kepted coming back time after time to take order. We told them we needed more time because the menu was big. Eventually we order and when we get the rolls they are covered in sauces.... Not like a normal drizzel completely too sauce. So i tried to just wipe it off but it just made my roll wores. So I'm will try again. Just with all the sauces on the side. Tried this place for the first time and I'm not coming back. The wait staff didn't get our orders right and constantly asked us what we ordered even though it's written on the piece of paper. Phenomenal !!!! We came out here to try out a new sushi spot and since we were a big group we almost tried everything on the menu. I'm not sure what other thing any restaurant could do to top this place but the service was exceptional. The lovely lady who helped us out was on top of everything. No complications on bulking even though we were a big group, no waters were left unfilled and no order came out confused. She brought everything to the table with detail and great service . The food on the other hand did the job for itself . Every dish was fresh and tasty in its own way and let me tell you when I tell you I'm picky with sushi I'm def picky with sushi. Jun is a solid sushi artist, a great guy to share a brew with and a great reason to stop in for Yokozuna anytime... I'm a fan of sashimi and creative plates, Jun does a solid job keeping it new...I've never eaten any of the back kitchen food, so I can't comment...but it all looks good. His teriyaki chicken bowl is one of the only ones I've seen my 3 year old devour...so it must be good! Excellent value, fish is always fresh...not sure how anyone can go wrong here. read more
