Really wanted to find a good local sushi place. My husband and I went at dinner, it was moderately busy. We were seated and drink order taken by one server. The other server took our food order. Four rolls. We waited as appetizing food made it to other tables. At one point the chef served the table behind us where a single customer sat. My husband noted the amount of food and similarity to our order. We continued to wait. I noticed a discussion between the servers, who looked at our table, then talked to the chef. Moments later, the chef appeared to explain he had given our order to the man behind us(who knew it wasn't what he ordered) and that due to a lack of rice would be unable to make our order. We like sushi with rice so chose to leave. We sat about an hour to leave with an empty stomach. The man gleefully scarfing down our meal, as we walked out the door. I can only assume by his reaction the sushi was great. Unfortunately, we were not able to taste it ourselves. Seriously disappointed. UPDATE!! Returned the next evening to try again. We ordered the same four rolls. Spicy tuna, Tiger Roll, Crunch roll, and another roll the name escapes me. The rolls were good sized, ingredients were fresh and we enjoyed our meal. The staff remembered us and gave us an appetizer of dumplings. All in all the sushi was good and the service was attentive. We will be back again. read more

My daughter and I just had our mutual birthday dinner here. We've been looking for a good sushi place close by. We had read several good reviews of Yokozuna so we decided to give it a try. We had the shumai and the spring roll from the appetizer menu. I ordered ninja v samurai roll and my daughter had the scallop volcano. The shumai was delicious. We both decided on return visits that we each have our own order instead of splitting those. The spring roll, not so much. It wasn't what I expected. It was too large to begin with, and loosely rolled and covered with sauce. The problem with that is, it was way too big to pick up with the only utensils available to us, which were chopsticks, and picking it up with our hands left a sticky mess all over our fingers and palm. Also when you picked it up, it started to fall apart. The menu stated there was crab meat in it, it was actually some sort of crab meat salad that seemed to have a mayonnaise component. Not what I was expecting and not particularly pleasant. Neither one of us would be interested in ordering that again. Both of our sushi rolls were incredibly good. Not a big fan of the crab salad component in the California roll component of the ninja V samurai roll., but overall the roll was great. The scallop volcano was also quite good though a little over-sauced. The sauce was really nice and spicy, though. I hate to ding the service because I have a feeling that our server was new to the job, but she seemed a little confused about the menu, took our drink orders and then basically seemed to forget we had ordered drinks. She seemed flustered. Luckily the other server on duty stepped in and got us our glasses of wine and continued to help her through the rest of the evening. There were several other occupied tables, but the place didn't seem to be all that busy for a Friday night. The wait on the food and drinks seemed a little long, considering. I would've given zero stars if I could. I have been to this place one other time and the first time was great. Unfortunately the second time the owner was too busy sitting at the bar taking shots of liquor with a customer to tend to his other customers. Upon arrival I was told that they do not have any more sushi because the owner isn't making anymore. Mind you this was an hour before they close. I had a limited selection. I ordered a spring roll and a ginger salad and as the menu described fried shrimp with vegetables and rice. What I received was not this. I received literally fried vegetables with white rice. I would've gotten sick if I ate this. I advised the waiter respectfully that this is not what I ordered I wouldn't be able to eat it and asked for the check. Upon doing so the owner actually screamed across the restaurant you need to eat this this is a business. I am just so disgusted I can't even put it into words. This is one of the best sushi places (family run) I've ever been to. For appetizers get the "heart attack" so delicious (jalapeños with crab meat) The rolls are incredible and I recommend the kamikaze roll. If sushii isn't your thing they have a wonderful teriyaki salmon that's excellent. Sometimes they have nightly specials. Small and quaint and decorated nice. The family is great. Sore throat? My wife wanted to go to the new sushi place in Ashland because one of her coworkers was raving about it. In my mind, I was thinking that Ashland had never been known as a sushi haven. Well, I'll tell you what... Boy was I wrong on that one! Yokozuna has some of the best sushi that I have ever had. I'm not going to claim to be a sushi connoisseur but I will claim that I know great flavor when I taste it. I have a very serious question for my readers... How many of you knew that a California Roll could be deep fried? Now, those of you with your hands up; why didn't you tell me? I had the California Dream Roll which is a deep fried California Roll with eel sauce on it. This roll blew my mind! It had flavor, it had fresh ingredients, and it had crunch without being greasy. I mean, who knew? My wife had the shrimp fried rice. I must say that the rice was simply amazing. The rice wasn't over-cooked, greasy, and dry like some places tend to cook it. It was moist, savory, and honestly didn't need any soy sauce. I honestly cannot wait to go back and try some of the other rolls that caught me eye. Yet again I was the second party there for lunch, obviously not a bustling hot spot. Not a good indicator for a business who's main objective is sell expensive fresh raw fish QUICKLY. Dining alone for this visit I sat at the bar. A typical Sushi bar with refrigerated display cases full of fresh & exotic fish. That's what most Sushi bars are like, not this one. There were (2) cases only (1) was running and it was only 1/2 full. Made me think of what the cases look like at my favorite Sushi place on a busy Saturday night when it's time to close! Tempting fate I ordered a deluxe roll, the Kamikaze Roll. The Chef (host, waiter, busboy) quickly made my roll, though with his back to me, and presented a very good looking roll! Pleasant surprise! A nice bug roll, well presented! Considering the location, it was surprisingly GOOD. Not fantastic but pretty good for a out of the way, hole in the wall, located in a "C" class strip center. Mind you it doesn't crack my top 5 for Sushi, but better than many others. Feel for the owner trying to maintain freshness without having the volume. Wow, how is this a legit sushi joint and did the sushi chef/owner forget everything he learned in "10 years of training" in Japan? I ordered the sushi regular, a philly roll, a salmon skin roll, a spicy tuna roll, a chirashi, and a beef teriyaki. The sashimi looked like the chef hacked it off the fish with a cleaver. There was little taste in the fish and my chirashi bowl was 1/2 full of rice and 1/2 full of salad. The nigiri came out in huge filets. The rolls looked like they were put together by an amateur sushi apprentice. The price was high and not all entrees came with soup....nevermind salad. Most of the signature rolls on the menu are cooked...or, shall I say, deep fried. Trust me, my pics make the entrees look better than they are. The rice in the rolls reminded me of Safeway sushi. No vinegar taste and lumpy. Service was sweet and attentive though, although there was a delay in the kitchen in getting the beef teriyaki cooked b/c the chef's wife who moonlights as a cook was busy in the dining area flapping her gums with the customers. This sushi joint is located in a dumpy part of town (e.g. truck rest stops, motels, fast food, etc.) and the 1/2 deserted strip mall had drug dealers hanging out and selling drugs when I left. read more

One of my new favorite sushi spots in the Richmond area! Stumbled upon this place while in Ashland but don't let the location and exterior fool you. It has a low lit but inviting atmosphere. I visited on a Saturday night around 7pm and was able to be seated immediately at a table of my choice. I had read that that sometimes had live music(there is a piano inside) but there was none during our visit. I had ordered the shrimp lovers roll and the person I was with order what I believed to be a tempura roll which was topped with tempura asparagus. Service was fast; both dishes were very delicious and the ingredients tasted fresh but unfortunately they were out of green tea ice cream that day. Yokozuna is our go-to spot for delicious sushi and friendly service. The atmosphere is cozy and the restaurant is family owned. I have been dining here for years and have never had a negative experience. The Fire Dragon Roll is served literally ON FIRE and is an absolute cornucopia of flavor. The Crusty Philly Salmon roll is another near and dear to my heart. Having tried nearly everything on the menu, I have many favorites, but it's all delicious. I'll definitely need to go back and try this place but so far I'm a fan. The place is very small and quiet, but still remains welcoming. The staff is very friendly and stays away from you unless you need something, couldn't ask for better service. Typical of all sushi places though, they are very expensive. I had a Fire Dragon Roll for $13 that while it was D LISH was in no way filling. I'd order it again for sure, but not without a salad beforehand to help fill the void. Not a lot of flavor in the other two rolls---Rock and Roll and a spicy tuna. The spicy tuna wasn't that spicy. Maybe it was a mix up, honestly, and we ended up with a normal one? The Rock and Roll just fell all apart. Wrapped in something edible and pink that wasn't nori. That was odd. Kids had lobster hand rolls, shrimp tempura roll, eel roll and shrimp and lettuce roll. They didn't think they were amazing. But..Service was quick and efficient. Everything seemed super fresh. Oh, but miso soup didn't come automatically with all those rolls... that seemed odd, too.
