A friend of mine asked me out for dinner here. He had been before, but it was a first for me, even though I live close. Its a hole in the wall type place, quite small with only a handful of tables. We were greeted and sat down immediately. I opted for the Dinner special (available 430-830) Choice of Won Ton or Sweet & Sour Soup 3 spring rolls Steamed rice Green Tea Ice Cream Your choice of entree -Seafood 14.35$ or Veggie, Beef, Chicken or Pork 10.25$ I chose Seafood ( Sauteed Prawns with Snow Peas) We didn't have very long to wait before the spring rolls arrived, followed by the Won Ton soup. The Won Tons were the freshest I have ever tasted! I totally loved it! Sping rolls were meh, My prawns & Snow Peas were fresh and cooked to perfection! It was a generous portion, and i took home what I didn't eat along with the steamed rice. The Green Tea Ice Cream was yummy, but a bit on the small side. However, the entire meal was a great value at under 15$, considering the entree alone was 12.95$ My friend had the Garlic Beef and Guy Lan, and he said he has had that dish all over the world, and it was the best he had ever had. Yopo is a small clean Chinese restaurant. Since moving down to this part of town I have never found a Chinese restaurant that was good. My spouse and I have walked past Yopo many times and finally decided to give it a try. As an Asian myself, I am very selective of my Chinese food, so we placed our order to go, I had the fried beef rice noodle dish, and my spouse had the curry beef and vegetables on rice. Oh boy, it was so sooo good!!! plus the portions were on the generous side. Now that we have found a place that's good for Chinese food, we will be back. Took 1 star off because we planned to eat in, but the 1 1/2 table that they had in there was occupied, plus they didn't put out their lunch specials menu, I had to ask them for it. I understand cheap and convenient Asian fast food comes with a price and the quality needs a different set of standard. With that said, I dont understand why they'd try to skimp on the sauce itself. We ordered take out and when we open up the boxes we were surprised to see a huge block of white rice with whatever we ordered on top- there was not enough sauce to even cover the rice which made the non-rice items look like garnishes instead of an actual dish that was suppose to go together. Yopo was a Yaletown staple for more than a decade, then closed for two years, then reopened under new management and with a different menu. Previously you got premium restaurant-quality food at reasonable pricing, but now you get Yaletown pricing, but the food is equivalent to what you'd receive in a mall food court -- completely lacking the quality and flavour it had under previous ownership. I have given this a few tries because it is so conveniently-located, but it is just simply a shadow of its former self. Really disappointed to have lost this jewel. read more

I kept ordering from Yopo. I would think sooner or later it will get better. And, sure enough, every once in awhile, the food would be delivered quickly and would be hot and well prepared. But, more often than not, the delivery would take well over an hour. The food would be bland. And there was always too much broccoli in their General's Chicken. They did usually get the order right. It is unfortunate that there simple were no other Chinese restaurants in Yaletown. Because Yopo is a crap shoot at best. And even, at its best, it's not that good. read more

Walking past this lone small Chinese restaurant in Yaletown (an area not known for authentic food establishments), one would wonder if there would be anything on the menu other than lemon chicken or sweet & sour pork. Having just moved to the neighbourhood from Coal Harbour, craving for Chinese food on an evening of building furniture and unpacking and not wanting to drive to Congee Noodle House out of downtown, we gave it a try. I was very pleasantly surprised with the taste and the choices available on the menu. I have tried beef chow fun, salt and pepper pork chop, and beef with scrambled egg on rice and they are all excellent. Prices are extremely reasonable. For example, beef chow fun at Yopo is cheaper than what I pay for take-out at Victoria in Royal Centre. Yopo has become our go-to take-out after a long day at work during the week. read more

There are very few Chinese restaurants in the Yaletown area. After a Costco run a friend and I headed to Yopo Cafe to try it out. We ate at Yopo Cafe. It's a tiny place with maybe 5 tables. I would say Yopo is reasonably clean for a Chinese restaurant. One of the first things I noticed is that this place gets a lot of take out orders! I bet 80% of their business is take out. I ordered the bbq pork wonton dish, and the spring rolls. The bbq pork was very lean, and a bit dry tasting. I prefer a bit more fat on my bbq pork. The wontons did not taste like wontons to me. It was a bit flavorless. There was no pork flavor that I could discern. The spring rolls were good. Nice and crispy. I guess given that I like Chinese food and this place is close to where I live I'll come back and order take out. I would say there are lots of Chinese restaurants around that offer better food but Yopo Cafe is conveniently located. read more

This place may not look like much but by God is it a diamond in the rough. And it's the fastest takeout I've ever ordered! Consistently ready in 10-15 minutes. There's a really big variety in dishes, from more authentic to North American Chinese food like orange chicken, lemon chicken, etc. In particular I am crazy about their soups. The corn chowder is really the egg flour soup with corn and it is mesmerizing. A bowl can serve two people generously, 4-6 people of you want less. I can't stay away from the shredded pork with eggplant. Generous portions too! Actually, I haven't had anything that's disappointing. And as I said, the portions are decent! One particular surprise was the quality of meat. It's not stringy or fatty - really good cuts of chicken and pork. We haven't had seafood or beef yet, because we don't eat beef. Cheap and delicious for the rare downtown Chinese food place. They season most dishes well, and it kind of makes up for the canned mushrooms, baby corn, and other non-fresh veggies they use. Also, when it comes to fresh veggies like bok choy, you might notice some sand and dirt that wasn't washed away before cooking. Beef with Ginger and Green Onion Hot Pot - really flavourful with tons of onions, garlic, and green onions. Big portion, too. Fried Beef Chow Mein - lots of flavour, and the chow mein tastes pretty fresh. Good amount of veggies. Hot and Sour Soup - I ask them to make this vegetarian for me. It's packed with black fungus, egg, bamboo shoots, etc. Spicy but not sour enough. Tastes good overall. Sauteed Prawns with Snow Peas - This is the only thing I didn't like. It was very oily, and the prawns tasted kind of meh. Fried Tofu with Black Bean Sauce on Rice - Big portion and tasty. I did find the bok choy to be not completely clean though. I used to have mad love for the ginger beef here. They'd fry the beef crispy, toss in their amazing sauce, fry up a few onions and green peppers, tons of ginger, and, shazam, your gingery-beefy dreams would be fulfilled. (Rawr.) But the recession hit. And, suddenly they changed. After 9 years working in the neighbourhood, I found them skimping on sauces, putting more veggies, as much as 25% less meat, and then a smaller portion overall. You want to raise your prices? Raise them. Don't dick me around and start serving me less and pretending nothing's changed. This is par for the course for the kung pao and other dishes, too. Used to be a really solid joint, but ain't what it was. Still? Pretty good. Just better if you don't have a frame of reference for who and what they were three years-and-longer ago. read more

Do yourself a favour and skip the lunch specials. If you order off the menu, quite a lot of the food is pretty well done. The spicy salt spareribs are really quite awesome in particular. one other thing to avoid are the wuntun. They don't use shrimp at all; just pork and water chestnuts which means that they aren't real wuntun. They do at least pack the noodle and soup seperately so that they don't turn to mush. Also, try to call ahead. The place is tiny so all you really want to do is stop in to pay and pick up. I think they deliver in yaletown as well for dinner. read more

ok... it's time for me to start reviewing my yaletown lunch places :-) I've been kind of avoiding it until now, but today I had a nice lunch, and I thought that it would be nice to talk about it! Yopo is a tiny tiny little place... So be aware !!! If, like me, you just want to get some take out for your lunch, it's waaay better to call in advance. This way, your order will be waiting for you, instead of you, waiting for your order in this very cramped space. Lunch specials are not that great 9but still descent hey !), but everything else that I have tasted on their menu is very good. And the price is really reasonable as well : today I had a Ma Po Tofu and rice for 7.25$... Can't really beat this in the area ! The portions are generous and the quality really good. So it's one of those places that I like to go at least once a week. And I'm glad I found it, as it is not easy at all to find a descent chinese restaurant in the area ! The food wasn't really that great, but it was cheap in a fairly pricey area, they delivered, and ... it was cheap?! We had a part of six, visiting Vancouver for about a week, staying in a rented condo. For convenience sake, we decided to order a delivery and tried a variety of dishes. I returned to Yopo Cafe today for a second try. Unfortunately, it was not as good as the first time. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken. Everything about the dish was good except one thing. The sauce was a nice combo of sweet and sour. They included a good amount of fresh broccoli, lots of onions, and good steamed rice. What wasn't so good was that hiding inside the deep fried batter were small, very small pieces of chicken (and chicken skin?!) Unlike the first time, when I raved about the quality of the chicken pieces served, today they fell back down to "Just Another Chinese Fast Food Joint" serving only average quality chicken. Great food in a tiny place. Definitely call ahead and do take out; there's barely enough room to turn around in the joint. Great food though; and a favourite of mine when I worked in Yaletown. I've even taken a trip back to the neighbourhood to get my fix when I was nowhere in the area. I especially enjoy the fact the the chicken they use is good quality, and not mostly skin and gross parts like most "fast food" Chinese places. Good variety on the menu, delicious flavours, and good pricing. For a city voted as having the best Chinese food outside of China, I've had some really bad luck trying to find good Chinese in Vancouver - Yopo is a definite exception to my bad luck, and I'd eat here all the time if I was at all close to Yaletown. read more

**2.5 stars** Went in here and saw trays and trays of fresh made wontons so took that as a sign that this is their specialty. Ordered a bowl of wonton noodle soup and it was quite underwhelming. The wontons are a bit mushy...they should have a bite to them and they were also bland so I had to dip them in soy sauce. Omg this place is THE WORST. I just ordered from here for the first (and last!) time 3 nights ago even though I live 2 blocks away. I ordered one won ton soup and one fried rice with extra veggies. It was $19 .... seems unreasonable, but ok if it's good. So I get there and omg don't plan on eating in there are only 3 tables and it seems pretty dirty. So I ask the lady for some soy sauce and duck sauce, and she starts nickle n diming me over condiments, saying she already gave me 2 soy sauce (2 little packets for a whole thing of fried rice and a soup? What??) and that plum sauce is only for spring rolls. Lady I just spent $19 on my dinner here, if I want plum sauce on my fried rice I can have it. I let it be known that she needed to give me enough condiments for my dinner, and she did do very begrudgingly the entire time talking smack to the lady next to her in their language. Just because I don't speak your language doesn't mean I can't recognize an angry tone, aggressive hand gestures and wicked side eye, ok??? So I get home and the "extra veggies" she's charged me $2 for still has way less veggies than a normal place would, and omg was it bland. The veggies were CANNED not fresh and tasted like aluminium. That was the only flavour... can. Thank god I have soy sauce in my house because the rice and the won ton soup were both completely flavourless. Threw out most of the rice, no amount of soy sauce could save this it honestly tasted like card board. If you're looking for good Chinese in the area, check out Sweet Mandarin on Davie and Richards. A bit further out there's Hoho's on Davie between Bute and Jervis, and of course T&T at Stadium skytrain station if you're looking for fast casual. If you want sit down sweet Mandarin is great for that, and Peaceful just opened on Richards and Dunsmuir, as well as a location at Davie and Bute. If you're going for delivery Won More on Denman has fabulous wonton soup and stir fry's. Honestly anywhere but here. I'd even recommend the mall food court before this place. read more

Take-out is fast, for the size of the restaurant the options are fairly varied, and the prices are still reasonable for Yaletown. If you want to order at lunch, I recommend calling ahead, or NOT going between peak hours of 12-12:45, so there is less of a wait. read more

We continue to order from here every few weeks. My partner is Chinese so we dine mostly in Richmond but this place is just a block from our condo, so we eat it on our lazy nights. There are certain dishes that I like from here and others that I don't. Staff are friendly and service is good. Prices are OK for Yaletown. All of the dishes we order have always been consistent. We've had good luck with all of the chow mein/noodle and fried rice dishes, spicy spareribs (small, but tasty), and the crispy fried tofu. The wonton soup is filling but Canadianized a bit (not as seafood-y as most Chinese places). I like that they vent the takeout boxes so your fried food doesn't steam itself into mush. I avoid the eggrolls/samosas/general tso's/mapo tofu -- all of these seem to miss the mark. read more

This isn't my my first choice when it comes to Chinese restaurant in downtown area but Yopo is the closest Chinese restaurant to my house. Their combos are pretty good deal. And their wonton soup is pretty decent. I prefer shrimp wontons and they have beef wonton. Their beef broccoli sauce is pretty good. I just wish they don't put in more beef in it. We go there to eat purely out of convenience hence the 3 stars. The service is pretty fast if you are eating in or picking up. I've never gotten it delivered so I don't know what that's really like. The food is decent but if I have more time, I would rather go to tsui hang village on granville. read more

It`s too bad that the cheap and simple Chinese food restaurants that are so abundant on the Main Street and Kingsway corridors are not very common downtown. Yopo definitely fills that void. They have quite an extensive menu for such a small space (only offering seating for about 15-20 people) , and offer lunch specials and fast take-out. I'm a fan of many of their main dishes and snack items - tan tan noodles, spicy tofu, green onion pancakes. It's cheap and cheerful with good portions. I only wish they were open late. They close at 9pm, and occasionally run out of a few popular items by then. This would make a perfect late night spot in this area. read more

Small portions to price ratio. Fast delivery. Better than Ho Ho's in quality and taste but still fast food. Easy menu to understand. Fast Chinese food in YVR is a challenge at best and this place needs to be more generous to become the favorite. read more

Yaletown has lost a great place to eat at a price that you cannot find anymore. Other option you have is Subway or 7/11.

We have eaten there quite often as it is unique for a true Chinese restaurant to be located in the heart of Yaletown. For certain, you get large portions and at great prices. You will take a doggy bag home for sure. Huge menu so you have many choices. There isn't a dish that we have ordered we didn't like. Very small place so they must have a good take out business. The 'server' is friendly enough. If you are in Yaletown and craving Chinese then this is a good bet for satisfaction. read more
