Dozen breakfast burritos with sausage
Kaile T.

Really love this gem found next to Bar West. Food: We love their sausage breakfast burritos and glazed donuts. I ordered online for store pick up and my order was waiting for at the time expected. Store: The interior is small, with a few tables. We perfer to pick up and enjoy at home. Service was quick and friendly. Has a 'Mom & Pop', small business feel.

After a walk at Shawnee Mission Park, my friend wanted to check this place out. By the time I entered, (around 11:30 AM), there were only about 2 dozen pastries left in the display case. My friend somehow managed to "convince" me to have one of the dozen she bought. I had the double chocolate [cake] donut--it was delicious! So soft and delectable, very fresh tasting. The icing was tasty, too! Not too sweet, and not waxy either. They've been there for about 20 years (& I'm just now visiting??) and they've gotten a few awards. Note to self: This establishment shares parking with Eggtc., Minsky's, a liquor store, gas station and a couple other businesses so parking on a late Sunday morning is iffy at best. It would appear that there is limited seating there and might be considered a grab and go type deal, but I'm not sure--it's a small venue though. The guy behind the counter -- maybe the owner/baker, was nice.

Donut, chocolate cake donut, cinnamon roll, and something that was filled.

I love Yos doughnuts. I'm hesitant to recommend them because it's already hard enough to get my fave unless you go early (cherry acorn) but I'm telling you because I want them to get all the business. Very friendly and so tasty. Go early Sorry about the pics, there boxes were half destroyed before I thought to take pics

Finally found somebody that makes fresh donuts. Not shipped in. They are so good..

Favorite donut place in the area! They are still open and are planning on remaining open and have a large variety of donuts. Definitely stop by to make your quarantine a little sweeter.

Service is always friendly and they have the drinks out pretty quickly. I've had one coffee beverage that was a fall seasonal and it was really good. They had some really nice sounding drinks but I opted not to drink one due to it being a little late in the day for me. The donuts are alway good. They do have a limited supply so depending on demand, you get what you get. But they always seem to have several options. My favorite has been the Bavarian filled donut but the cranberry mochi seasonal donut was a definite contender. The kiosk is close to the door so it makes it easy if you're just stopping in for a quick snack. But if you want to hang out, there's a ton of seating throughout the building. They even have games that you can play. Definitely stop by! I'm

Reminiscent of Daylight donuts back in the '80s! I am a glazed donut guy, so I don't get too fancy here with the jelly-filled or rice-floured. I also prefer the puffy dough to the cake... so no real judgement on those either. That said, this place can make you feel that small-town feel. What a donut and coffee shop should feel like. It is quaint, and you will see the same cast of characters sitting around the table day after day. Drop in and give this place a try. I am certain that you will like it more than the cookie-cutter corporate coffee store or the on every corner donut shop that makes one type of donut. Also... Donut? Doughnut? Hmmmm?

Everything flows. It's organized chaos done right. The seasonal drinks are consistently creative and actually good. Not just pretty for Instagram. Balanced, thoughtful, and well executed. And the bakery? Dangerous. The display case is pure temptation. Cinnamon rolls, pecan twists, danishes, cookies, scones. Everything looks like the right choice, which makes choosing impossible. They also have solid brunch plates and sandwiches if you're trying to pretend you're here for something other than sugar and caffeine. Now for the one miss. I ordered the pepper jack breakfast burrito, and unfortunately, it didn't live up to the rest of the experience. Flat flavors, mushy texture, no real identity. The hot sauce was doing most of the work. It felt out of place in a spot that clearly cares about quality. Thankfully, the bakery and coffee saved the day. The pecan twist was flaky, buttery, and just sweet enough. The seasonal latte with cold foam was smooth, balanced, and dialed in. Overall, McLain's is a Kansas City staple for a reason. Efficient, welcoming, and consistently good at what they do. One menu tweak away from being near-perfect. Solid 4-star spot. Would happily come back.
