I grew up in Taiwan, and Yoshinoya was a big part of my childhood. It was also a place where my late aunt and grandmother would often buy bento meals for me, so I have a very special emotional connection to Yoshinoya. Unfortunately, this is currently the only Yoshinoya location in the Bay Area. Still, their beef bowl tastes just the way I remember it. I've been to Yoshinoyas in SoCal (where there is competition every other block) and this is store is still amongst the top Yoshi that I've been to overall. It was good back then. They had one in SF that I tried too. However, they all closed down except for this one in the South Bay. Food was just edible. It wasn't bad or it wasn't great I guess my taste buds have changed a lot since my teens. Would I go back? We ordered the food as how the coupon stated and the Asian lady in the front Angie; was so disrespectful to us. She said there was going to be an up charge for beef even though the coupon had beef and chicken for a set price. I was looking for a quick spot to grab lunch that isn't fast food and came across Yoshinoya. It's located at the corner of Stevens Creek and North Portal. It has a decent sized parking lot. The menu is simple, almost similar to Sarku Japan menu. They offer four sizes, bowl, large, combo and combo XL. All their sizes come with mixed veggies, your choice of protein, noodles or rice. I opted for a bowl, udon and chicken teriyaki, total $11. Sauce options were soy and ginger. The bowl was sufficient with 4 slices of teriyaki chicken. The chicken wasn't dry or overly sauced. The skin was pleasant to eat. The ginger added a palette cleanser in between bites of the udon and chicken. The udon was cooked al dente. The bowl is a perfect size for anyone watching their food servings. The bowl may look like it's meant for kids but it's fulfilling. I've also driven past this establishment for so many years (I can't be the only one!) despite it being the only Yoshinoya location in the entire SF Bay Area. At an attempt to try new things, I stopped by for my first time and was pleasantly surprised at the value and taste. They definitely use a nice thin cut of beef that resembles gyudon, though some pieces can be more on the stringy side. They also have fried chicken (Tokyo chicken is what I think they call it) for $3.50 but had over 6 pieces, a really great deal! While staying there one evening, we were wanting some yoshinoya since in the area. It's been years. And we were really hungry. Got to the spot to order. Service was okay. Not very personable tho. Them and Del Taco! (which we also used to have!) Fast-food-style Japanese chain serving rice bowls with beef, chicken, veggies, boba drinks, gyoza, edamame and... CLAM CHOWDER!? (wtf i know right!) So ummm...I just came back from Tokyo, Japan and went to this Yoshinoya in the Bay Area and it just does not compare to the one in Japan. I'm spoiled now. I was missing Japan and had to come here and try it. The food was average but decently priced for what you get in America. Got their combo XL and you get their beef and chicken combo with steamed veggies. The chicken was good but was not grilled or crispy(no skin) and just drenched with sauce. The beef was fattier or chewier. Steamed veggies was plenty. Also while supplies last, additional $3 added chicken nuggets which was the only thing I really liked. A fast food chain as we got our food fast. Plenty of tables here and it was pretty full like their private parking lot for a Saturday lunch. This fast food restaurant has been here awhile and needs updating. I was full from what I chose but was just not satisfied. Good even though for what you get, don't get me wrong. I began eating at a very young age. When I was in first grade my mom would take me to this yoshinoya after piano classes. I consider this one of the core gastronomic memories within the short illustrious life I've lived thus far. Nearly two decades later, we've seen times change--old best friends, new strangers-- yet Yoshinoya Cupertino and I are still standing. In fact, this is its only location outside of southern California, which is a true testament to its resilience and unwavering quality. If I could only eat one dish or at one restaurant for the rest of my life it would be yoshinoya gyudon. I have actually eaten 6 days straight here just to see if I'd ever get tired. I did not. (i only stopped bc i needed to eat a vegetable) Of course, I have also had yoshinoya in Japan; however I would venture to say the gyudon is just as good here as it is there. Probably ate at yoshinoya at least once a week back when we used to live in LA. Have gone to this location a few times just to get a quick fix. Nice workers and super fast. The place looked decently cleaned. Not too bad. Flavor is almost there but beef is somewhat too dry. Still decently good maybe because I miss Yoshinoya so much lol This time around I got the XL beef and chicken combo. I haven't been here in a while..... but I'm pretty sure the XL is the same dang size as what I used to get when grabbing a regular combo. Don't know what's the XL about. Again it tasted decent but not what I'm used to. The clam chowder has completely changed in flavor. Tasted super watered down. I loved their chowder!
