Despite being half Japanese , I've never had beef katsu until now! This was my BEST meal I had during my entire stay in Waikiki!! The meat was tender and fried to perfection and i was relieved that there was a filtered water filling station for us customers!! Thankful for the 15% coupon I found! I think it was in the Honolulu coupon booklet I grabbed at the airport! I'm a sucker for coupons! Lol. My waitress was helpful and was welcoming! The employees were kind enough to let me stay a little longer after I finished my meal so I could charge my cellphone before I left. Definitely want to return here when I come back to Hawaii for my next visit!!

Food 4/5 American Wagyu katsu 4/5 It's crispy on the outside, and juicy in the inside. It's more flavorful than the tenderloin. Sauce 5/5 Salad and dressing 5/5 - Taste just like tamafuji salad dressing. Shrimp katsu 4/5 It's a good shrimp katsu. Breading* 3/5 If you had Ginza and Tamafuji, the breading here won't be as good. But it's crispy enough and satisfies your katsu craving. Value 5/5 I think for being located in Waikīkī, the price is fair. Service 4-5/5 depends on server and how busy it is. You refill the water yourself if it's busy. If not busy, they may refill it for you. Ambiance - not quiet, but you'll hear conversation around you. It's very clean. Sometimes you may see small birds fly in. Overall, 5/5 because of value. Otherwise 4/5.

    8oz sirloin gyukatsu

Hardly see any places in Hawaii that serves gyukatsu at a reasonable price! Portions are good and the meat is tender. If you're hungry I recommend getting the larger portions but other than that the rice and cabbage are free refills and the set comes with curry and two different styles to dip the gyukatsu (dashi/wasabi or regular katsu sauce)

8 oz beef (I think tenderloin cut?)

It's not like Japan, but it did what it needed to do for me. Service is great - the servers are polite, not pushy, and you get unlimited cabbage. They leave you alone for the most part. I got the 8 oz beef (forgot which cut) and it was a little too fried and crunchy for my taste. The color was darker than expected. It did not remind me of Japan at all but it satisfied my need for a beef katsu cutlet. I was not feeling pork on this day. The curry sauce is nice. Their wasabi is not the typical guac-looking kind and good with their salt paired with the katsu. Located an escalator ride down in the Stix Asian Food Hall, this place offers beef katsu when you want to take a break from pork. I got seated pretty quickly since I came around 2 or 3, and eventually I was the only person eating there, so it was quiet for my experience. You can hear the chefs and staff in the back speaking Japanese, which is cool. This is an option if you don't want to eat pork!

Shrimp Katsu - INSANE how good this was! The inside was pure shrimp with a perfectly thin crisp coating

A gem and the closest taste I've gotten to Gyukatsu outside of Japan! Located downstairs in the Stix food hall this shop holds about 6 tables and two bar seat counters. The workers were incredibly nice despite how busy they got and were as attentive as possible. We sat at the bar counters and were served relatively quickly. The gyukatsu sets come with unlimited rice and cabbage, just ask! The dressing for the cabbage is delicious, I ended up getting two servings. I ordered the gyukatsu and shrimp set (surf and turf I think) and I was in love at first bite. The crust on the gyukatsu was very finely chopped and crisp. The crust didn't flake apart when dipped in the sauce and it was perfectly cooked to my taste. This establishment doesn't offer the little grill to continue cooking your gyukatsu, but honestly you don't need it! The shrimp honestly stole the show for me. It was plump, had the thinnest, crispest coating on it, and just delicious. And it was huge! I wish I had time to stop by one more time before leaving, but I did recommend it to my friends who came here the next day and they gave it raving reviews, too!

Just happened to stumble upon this place walking through the Stix Asian Food Hall. I've always wanted to try beef katsu! I went for the 4oz tenderloin set. I wish I had gotten the bigger set! It was so good!! The set comes with unlimited rice and cabbage (sesame dressing was delish), and 3 different sauces for dipping - katsu sauce, curry sauce, and dashi shoyu with wasabi. For the katsu sauce you first grind up the sesame seeds in the bowl and then pour in the sauce, I enjoyed the process. My fav was the dashi shoyu with wasabi. There's also directions on how to eat the beef katsu as well!! Very helpful. Very friendly and attentive staff. Will definitely be back :)

Surf & Turf Combination: Beef Tenderloin and Shrimp Katsu

After returning to Hawaii from Japan trip, I desperately craved gyukatsu! Decided to make the long drive into Waikiki and was happy I did! This restaurant is located conveniently in the Stix foodhall, which luckily has lots of parking or is a central walking distance from many hotels. I ordered the surf and turf combination with beef tenderloin katsu and shrimp katsu. The meat was extremely tender and the shrimp was huge and plump! Everything was delicious and they give you various condiments to eat with it: wasabi, katsu sauce, curry, and one other that seemed like Dashi shoyu. The rice and cabbage salad were refillable as well which was nice as I love the cabbage! The only difference between this and the one I had in Japan was not having the hot plates to cook and/or warm the meat, but other than that it was great! The staff were really friendly and made sure to check up on us to see if we needed refills. The next time I'm missing Japan, I'll be back!

Surf & Turf: US Beef Sirloin Katsu with Salmon

I was walking around Waikiki and walked into STIX to check out the restaurants. This place caught my eye and my friend and I decided to try. Food: 5/5 This place had delicious beef katsu. We got the surf and turf combos. The shrimp was crispy and flavorful. The katsu was cooked to a perfect median rare. The katsu sauce,m and the dashi soy sauce paired deliciously. Price: 5/5 As a visitor in Hawaii, I noticed there were not a lot of veggie options. I am grateful that this place came with unlimited cabbage salad and rice. They also had a 20% off in a coupon booklet. Given the huge portion size and unlimited rice and salad, this place is definitely work the price. Service: 5/5 The service was wonderful! The servers took our order when we sat down. The food came out pretty quickly and looked freshly made. The severs came to refill our rice and salad without us asking. Ambiance: 4/5 This place is located in STIX, which is an Asian Food Hall. The location itself is a little small. I would say the ambiance here is not its selling point.

    US Beef Tenderloin Katsu 4oz / 115g

Kyoto Gyukatsu Katsuda exceeded my expectations for sure! The server was kind and helpful. There are tables and counter seating, we chose table. I like that they give free refills for cabbage and rice with the sets. The assortment of curry sauce, wasabi, salt and dashi was like going through a tasting flight. We ordered the surf and turf US Beef Sirloin Katsu with the shrimp katsu & the 4oz Beef Tenderloin Katsu. The tenderloin is more tender but the sirloin is still very tasty! I loved the shrimp katsu and it was a recommendation from the waitress. My favorite combination was putting wasabi with the salt and don't forget to eat the rest of your curry dip with your rice! They also give a Kamaʻāina Discount! We'll be back again!

Jamie W and I had a memorable dining experience at Sushi Matsuri in the subterranean STIX ASIA food court the last time we were in Honolulu (review: https://yelp.to/kRNxXaG_yP), but this time, we were hamstrung by the long line. We stopped by this tonkatsu spot because there were plenty of tables available. The menu also looked good with several beef katsu sets and surf & turf combinations. If that wasn't enough red meat, you can also get sides of katsu. I must've succumbed to the pervasive carnivery because I ordered the $21 4-oz US Beef Sirloin Katsu Set, which came with rice, tonkatsu sauce, shoyu, wasabi, and sesame seeds I had to ground myself. It also came with a shredded cabbage which they replenished upon request (Photo 10). A fine idea since they were calorie-free. The steak was just the right amount at four ounces and quite tender with the panko providing the right crisp. Jamie got all the same sides with his non-meat order, the $36 Assorted Seafood Katsu Set consisting of salmon roe, slices of salmon and tuna katsu, and two shrimp katsu (Photo 7). Quite a collection and a nice contrast in flavors and textures. It was a hearty meal and a most satisfying one. FOOD - 4 stars...hearty with high quality proteins AMBIANCE - 4 stars...an izakaya on the simple side SERVICE - 4.5 stars..,attentive server TOTAL - 4 stars..,homestyle tonkatsu and bottomless cabbage RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Gyukatsu sirloin 4 oz set
    Lorie G.

I love gyukatsu and have eaten it only in Japan. I had the sirloin 4 oz gyukatsu set which came with rice, cabbage and sauces. The rice and cabbage are refillable. When I had gyukatsu in Japan, they always had a burner so you could cook your meat a little more. I asked our server if there was a burner, he said no but he could take it in the back and cook it more if I wanted. I was fine with my cook of meat. Anyway, I was so happy with my meal. My husband and daughter both had the sirloin with 2 shrimp tempura and there was so much meat in the shrimp. Definitely will eat here again when I need my gyukatsu fix.

Always had pork or chicken katsu never beef so here we are! Waited in line for about 15 min and got us a table yay I had the Wagyu katsu and my partner the tenderloin katsu. Both entrees came with 2 big tasty prawns ! Included unlimited shredded cabbage and rice also. Wagyu was a lil chewy yet flavourful but tenderloin katsu was melt in your mouth tender! We both enjoyed our meals and would recommend this unpretentious small eatery.

    8 oz Wagyu

After hubs read the reviews and looked at the pictures, he wanted to check it out. We arrived at around 7pm on a weekday and it was busy. There was another couple in line and we were told it was about a 30 minute wait. It did take about 30 minutes before we were seated. We wanted to stick with the beef since that is what they're noted for. Hubs ordered the 8 oz tenderloin and I ordered the 8 oz Wagyu. For me, 8 oz was a lot of meat - gave 4 oz to hubs. Out of both, hubs and I both liked the tenderloin more - it just had more flavor. We tried it with the different sauces and we both found the wasabi and shoyu to be the best when eating with the meat. Appreciate the refills of cabbage and rice. As another reviewer noted, miso soup would've been a nice added complement to the set. Service was also friendly and they checked on us often. Glad to have given it a try.

#1 TONKATSU 5.0…read more Ginza Bairin is hands down one of the best places to enjoy deliciously prepared tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet) outside Japan. The original Ginza Bairin opened in Tokyo's Ginza District in 1927 (a review of that location is coming soon)! For the Waikiki location, reservations can be made through its Yelp page, although the restaurant notes that availability is limited. If you don't have a reservation, try going right when they open. The restaurant is divided into two dining rooms: the Tonkatsu Room and the Yoshoku Room. I personally prefer the Tonkatsu Room, as it feels more reminiscent of the traditional eateries we've visited in Japan. The Yoshoku Room focuses more on yoshoku, or Japanese cuisine influenced by Western cooking. One of the best reasons to arrive early is the limited availability of their special Kurobuta (Berkshire) pork. Once it's gone, it's gone for the day! We've tried both the Kurobuta pork and the regular pork loin, and both are amazing. However, the Kurobuta has a higher fat content, making it especially tender and flavorful. With the tonkatsu set, you receive miso soup, rice, shredded cabbage, and pickled daikon, all with unlimited refills. They also provide toasted whole sesame seeds, which you grind yourself in a special bowl before mixing them with their signature tonkatsu sauce. In 2027, Ginza Bairin will celebrate its 100th anniversary since opening its first restaurant in Japan. Longevity means something; it's simply that good!

Validated parking also available in bank of Hawaii garage. We ended up getting seated on their tonkatsu side which is a smaller dinning area but still comfortable! I order the wagyu gyukatsu and my boyfriend ordered a katsudon. Both came with miso soup, cabbage, and rice. The gyukatsu came with a little grill to heat to your own preference. It also came with a variety of sauces/toppings and a small serving of curry. The miso, rice, cabbage, and curry was unlimited refills! The gyukatsu was slightly tough in my opinion but it still tasted super good! My boyfriend enjoyed his katsudon. Service was great and they let us share the curry that my gyukatsu came with rather than having my boyfriend ordered his own. They even gave us extra in our takeout container. Overall great dinning experience and will be back!
