I have been to You Don Ya for many years and always get the Karubi Don. There are many great options to choose from, including sides like karaage. Unfortunately prices have gone exponentially higher - I remember it used to be $11-$12 but currently at ~$18 before tax. As well, it used to come with soup and salad but now you have to pay extra for them. I still love the food but will have to visit less frequently due to these changes. I've been hesitant to try You Don Ya because I never really see much of a line up or positive reviews. I decided to try something new with my team for Christmas dinner and made reservations for lunch. We were greeted warmly and seated in a private room upon arrival. We ordered: 1. Chicken Karaage: This was a really good to share for an appetizer. There was plenty of chicken and deepfried to perfection. The sauce that came with it was a sriracha-mayo like sauce which was yummy. 2. Karubi Don: Boneless beef rib with a hot spring egg over rice. The hotspring egg was a little too runny for me so I'd skip on it next time. The beef was grilled to perfection! Pink & tender. The bowl looked suspiciously small but I was sooo full upon finishing it. I feel like being seated inside the room we got accidentally somewhat ignored. This is a casual dine in restaurant serving Japanese don and tapas. I came here on the recommendation of my boyfriend and ordered their signature donburi dish: Karubi Don. I had pictured this dish to be an elegantly presented bowl of rice topped with gleaming slices of beef and onions but I just got a poorly arranged version of that. Aside from that, I was excited to dig in. Initially, I noticed how under-seasoned this dish was. If only there was some soy based sauce that could be added to enhance the flavour. The sauce they drizzled on was insufficient. Another criticism I have for this dish is how mushy my rice was. The rice was overcooked and made for an unpleasant eating experience. The meat quality was nice, but the rice totally ruined it for me. Moving on to the side dishes, I ordered the Karaage, and the Fried Brie Cheese. These were really delicious! The cheese was very gooey and melty. I definitely recommend this, and eat it right away. The karaage was crunchy and peppery. I loved eating it with the mayo sauce. It's rare to have side dishes that trump the main, but that is the case for this restaurant. We lined up for about 20 minutes to eat at this place. It was crazy busy on a Friday night. Once we were seated, we immediately placed our order. I got the Hamachi Nabe which consisted of yellow tail, shitake mushrooms, soyabeans, bonito flakes and a teriyaki like sauce that you pour over the rice bowl and mix together before eating. I also got a side of kimchi to go with my meal. My wife got the Karubi Don bowl which had slices of beef on rice. Both bowls came with your choice of either pork bone soup or a miso soup and a cabbage salad. We also added a side order of a fish tataki. To be honest, I didn't really enjoy my meal. I find once you pour the sauce over the bowl and mix it all together, the rice gets way too soggy and the fish gets ripped apart during the mixing process to fully enjoy the fish. The kimchi tasted like one of those plastic kimchi containers you find at T&T where it has been sitting on the shelves for months. It was very sour and mushy and not enjoyable. In Downtown Toronto again for our monthly visit and finally got around to trying You Don Ya. When you walk into the restaurant it looks small and may be hold approximately 50 patrons, however there are more seats in the back of the restaurant. After looking at the menu and debating over the many delicious choices available we finally decided on the following apps: Fried Brie Cheese and the Shrimp Tempura. These appetizers were quite fun to eat. The batter was not super heavy. We also ordered the Karubi Oshi-Zushi which is the pressed and torched beef sushi. This dish was full of flavour and could have been a meal on its own however it was shared between two people. As for our main, we ordered the Karubi Don which is reasonably priced for the portion. It comes with juicy and tender boneless beef short ribs, white onions, and some green onions sprinkled on top and a side of poached egg. We also ordered the sizzling Hamachi Nabe. Unlike the other options, rice in this bowl is crispy since it arrives in an heated stone pot. When served the sauce is poured at the table over the rice. This dish is also served with a poached egg on the side. The sizzling Hamacbi Babe was my favourite dish as it was full of flavour. Both dishes were served with a soup and salad to start which added a nice touch. We are looking forward to trying other items on the menu. In fact, I've visited them multiple times so I will talk about the Karubi don (boneless beef short rib), Katsu don (fried pork or chicken), gyu suki/steakie don (beef steak/tendon). Note that all rice bowls come with a choice of soup (miso or pork bone) and a cabbage salad) Karubi Don - Out of all the bowls I've tried, this one is my favourite. The short rib is cooked beautifully (i.e. pink center) and placed meticulously around the bed of short grain rice to form a mountain shape. Right off the bat, the presentation is great! The short rib is very tender and compliments the rice beautifully. The portion is quite generous as well! Katsu don (chicken) - Again, the rice bowl is presented nicely as they have a large chicken cutlet blanket over the rice at the bottom. There is also an egg mixture that elevates richness of the dish. Highly recommend to mix the egg into the rice so that it coats each grain before having a bite with the katsu! Gyu suki/steakie don - The toppings here is steak and tendon. The steak, once again was cooked excellently similar to the short rib. The tendon however, was a bit on the rich side for me. When mixed into the rice, it gave it a really thick/almost glutenous feeling to it Service: Very consistent throughout the three different times I visited. The staff comes around to refill water and help clear plates/dishes regularly. Interior: Sleek, open concept. A glass wall allows you to look into the kitchen to see their operations. You Don Ya is still relatively new to the area - despite the mixed reviews on here, our group of 5 decided to give it a try! I am so glad that we did. It wasn't too busy when we came on a weeknight and we managed to get a table fairly quickly. Everyone gets an order sheet and there are quite a few types of rice bowls you can choose from along with side dishes and add-ons. You get a complimentary soup (choice of miso or pork bone broth) as well as salad. I would recommend getting the miso, but the pork bone broth wasn't bad either. Salad was surprisingly good and I especially appreciated the sesame dressing on it. Most of us got the first one listed on the menu which is also their most popular one - the karubi don which features boneless beef short rib and onion. It was decent and the portion size was filling enough for us. Other things we ordered were the katsu don, chicken wings (5 pieces! in case you were wondering), and karaage (tasted more like Taiwanese salt and pepper chicken). Service was really good. Small restaurant near Yonge and Dundas specializing in rice bowls. Not the cheapest place to grab a bite in the area, and not the quickest either. Service here is a bit inconsistent. We waited quite a while after my order came out before my friend's arrived, but I noticed people beside us getting their order before us even though they came in after. We also had to flag someone down whenever we wanted more water. I ordered the hamachi nabe don, while my friend grabbed the beef short rib and tendon one. Both orders came with a bowl of soup (choice between pork or miso) and a small side salad. The hamachi nabe don comes with a serving of broth which you pour over the rice and mix in with the yolk to season the dish. Overall, the bowl was pretty tasty and fun to eat with all the different textures. The rice was nice and creamy with crisp edges, the fish was tender and sweet, and the edamame added an extra bite. The restaurant is spacious and have nice atmosphere. It seems like a good place to have a solid lunch. They first give you the salad & soup, they were okay, mediocre more precisely. I was more focusing on the donburi itself. I got the beef tendon donburi, they were delicious! Beef tendon were super tender, chewy and well marinated. The rice were cooked nicely, that went pretty well with the beef. HOWEVER, the portion size is definitely a huge disappointment. you can see it clearly how small the portions were. The poached egg that is in the picture were extra order of 50cent. Also, I feel like they can add a bit more of the beef sauce on to the rice to go with it, since it's more on the dryer side when eating it. You Don Ya is a new Japanese restaurant that opened up in the old Alio space near Bay and Dundas. Today was the first day of their soft opening. The restaurant bills itself as donburi restaurant (Japanese rice bowls) that also carries a few other unrelated items like press box sushi and some appetizers you'd find in an izakaya, like karaage. I ordered the ton-toro don along with an order of karaage. Every dish comes with broccoli salad and soup - either miso soup or pork broth. The broccoli salad dressing tasted like strawberry Yop. Don't get me wrong, I love Yop. It was just an interesting flavour as a dressing. The pork broth was unremarkable and exactly what you'd expect. The Karaage came next. It reminded me of Taiwanese popcorn chicken served with spicy 1000 Island Sauce. Finally, after a long wait, the ton-toro don arrived. I ordered it with an extra hot spring egg, which is essentially a cold poached egg. The dish consists of big chunks of onion and sliced pork jowl placed on a large bed of rice. The pork jowl was juicy and covered in a nice subtle sweet sauce, described as "salsa" in the menu. Unfortunately there wasn't enough sauce for the rice underneath. They didn't have beer today unfortunately. Overall, the meal came to about $40 with tax and tip. The portion size is good, but there's a ton of rice and there's not much to it. I came here for dinner with a few coworkers on a Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded, and we were seated with no wait. The wait staff was curt but polite and pleasant - typical of Japanese dining. I ordered the pork jowl donburi, which was served with coleslaw and a choice of pork bone broth or miso soup. I chose the bone broth. It was a visually pleasing dish, and was very tasty. The dish was certainly not pretentious upscale fine dining, but rather elevated Japanese comfort food. The pork was perfectly seared, and the fat marbling of the jowl cut was used well, rendered nicely and ever so slightly crisped. The glaze had wonderful flavour. The subtle salty-sweetness went perfectly well with the richness of the meat. While not unique, or even new to me, this dish was very delicious and made a great satisfying dinner. read more

Came here for lunch to celebrate my coworkers promotion. Was a busy lunch rush but we were seated fairly quickly between the 4 of us. Food itself was okay, the beef was tender but the tendon wasn't my cup of tea. Next time I'll order just the beef on its own. The karage was decent as well, good spot to get your popcorn bite size chicken fix in if you're downtown. The aburi sushi wasn't the best, jalapeño was really spicy, portions had too much rice and not enough fish. There's definitely other spots downtown with better aburi. read more

Decent place near Eaton's to grab a bite. Their food is definitely prepared with a lot of care and I'm sure they use some quality ingredients, but it just doesn't quite hit the spot and leave you with a feeling of being completely satisfied. I had the hamachi rice in hot stone bowl. The initial visual is pretty amazing, with the dancing bonito and the sizzle of the stone pot, but I had trouble picking out the hamachi since it blended into the rice like polar bear into snow. The serving size is modest and I think a little more ponzu is needed for the amount of rice. Overall, felt like a healthy meal. My boyfriend ordered the pork katsu don, which was saucier. Overall not too disappointed but wont be rushing back for more. Their complementary salad is a little odd. The dressing tasted like a flavored yogurt and really threw me off. Finally got around to checking this place out. Located on Dundas and Bay just a stone throws away from Toronto Eaton Center. This Donburi place is fairly new opened maybe about 6 months ago is very traditional style Donburi. My wife and I ordered the Fried Brie Cheese and the Shrimp Tempura. This guy was fairly big I mean if you aren't super hungry you could probably order this plus an appy and you would be on your marry way. The flavour is great and smokey with a drizzle of sweet sauce. I had ordered the Hamachi Nabe Don which is served in a sizzling stone pot finished table side with a drizzle of their sauce, I also ordered the Hot Spring Egg to go along with this. The rice at the bottom was my favorite as the stone pot fried up some of the rice to make it crispy and crunchy, the overall flavour of this dish was good 3.5 star only be cause the hamachi was getting over cooked as I mixed everything together. My wife ordered the Karubi Don and also with a Hot Spring Egg. The boneless beef short ribs were so juicy and tender a baby could eat it. I think I prefer the Karubi Don over my own dish. You Don Ya specializes in Doubouri, Japanese "rice dish bowl", similar in concept to the various Ramen houses that have become very popular. If you are looking for a fine dining experience where you are willing to pay more for quality, this is a great place. If you are looking to grab a filling meal for a good price, however, know the food here is indeed very good, but it's pricey. The restaurant setup is very roomy, spaceous, very clean and has beautiful asian aestheics. The presentation of the food when it comes out is amazing. The food is absolutely DELICIOUS, but for the price you are paying, you will be disappointed in the portion sizes. Whereas one might struggle with finishing a big bowl of ramen noodles at the end (especially if you're wanting to finish off the broth too!).... you will have no problems eating up a Doubouri and you will find yourself wanting some more. Service was also slow. I had no problems at my own table, but the table adjacent to us received the wrong food and ended up waiting a long time to get their bill at the end. My own table had to wait a while for all the food to show up but the waiter was quicker with the bill at the end. They certainly have a phenomenal menu and a beautiful setup, but they need to re-evaluate their portion sizes and prices, and they need to improve on their table service if they wish to stay in business for the long haul. read more

Short rib was cooked well, but the rice was a bit hard and raw, and hot spring egg was cold...at least warm up a little before you serve, the cold yolk texture is just not suitable. Update: yes! Finally both good food and good service! I came back here almost two months after my initial visit. I was seated right away (although at a weird end-of-the-bar table when there was nobody else) and offered a drink. I ordered the karubi don with the hot spring egg that I had been craving for so long. The food came within 10 minutes (I saw them making it on the spot) and it tasted just as good as before. People have been saying that the portion is small; I don't think it's small at all! I'm a pretty big eater and I usually have to get a side dish, but when I come here, a bowl of don would be enough for me. The meat was just as deliciously marinated and cooked as before and still super juicy. When I asked for the bill, it came really fast. It's still debit and cash only but hopefully that will change soon. I can't wait to come back here again and try everything else on their menu! read more

The portion size seemed really small upon first glance, but it did surprisingly feel quite filling near the end, esp when we added the egg on top. If you are starving maybe get something to share in addition to the rice dish? But we were full enough to not want anything else after (but with room for dessert!) Find me the fish in the picture will ya? So much rice in the sushi, but that might not be important since this restaurant specializes in Donburi. Oh we were not provided any plates for the sushi. I had to ask for it and got two Bowls back! Lol I ordered Short Ribs Donburi カルビ丼 Boneless short ribs were cooked to medium-medium well, topped with teriyaki sauce. It tastes ok, but not evenly seasoned and a bit too sweet. More salt will help in my opinion. The rice underneath is cooked to perfect! That surprised me. Service is normal, nothing special. However, when I first came in and asked one of the staffs if American debit card is included in their cash or debit only policy, she clearly did not understand me. However, she refused to seek help from other staffs, but only replied saying "only debit ok". In the end, I had to walk out for an ATM to withdraw cash. Improvement is needed. This place is still rather new, and at peak times there is usually a small wait for seats. The decor is very nice and modern, typical of most new asian eateries these days. The food here is very good for its PRICE. I think a thing that I had to keep in mind was that the presentation of the food was great, and they look very similar to what way more expensive restaurants have but for a lot cheaper, and that is a tradeoff. I personally thought the Ake-Oshizushi was a GREAT DEAL, for under 12$ you get 6-8 blowtorched pressed salmon squares. they use at least 50% more rice under the fish (so the squares are very large) but I guess you can't complain about getting lots of food. They still taste great, and while you can't compare it to say, the 36$ ones at Miku, they are way worth it at the price point IMO. That app was so large that I couldn't even finish my main, which was the number 1 bowl, a Karubi Don. I always get the Onsen egg with these, and it was decent. The photo definitely makes the cuts of beef look much softer, and while the taste was good, you can definitely tell that the cuts are of average quality (chewy). But for 14$, I think it meets my expectations. Service was fast and efficient. Will come back again for more blowtorched squares I think. read more

UPDATE: So we came back to try new dishes! This time, I got Karaage Don and my boyfriend got Katsu Don with chicken. Both were absolutely delicious! My Karaage Don featured Japanese style chicken nuggets with mayonnaise drizzled on top. They had just the right amount of breading that made the chicken stay crispy until the very last bite! At first, I thought mayonnaise and rice was a weird combination but I was wrong. Mayonnaise really added a fatty flavor and subtle kick of sourness that paired perfectly with rice and chicken. This would probably be my new go-to at You Don Ya! My boyfriend's chicken Katsu Don was good as well. It came with panko fried flat pieces chicken and egg mixture underneath. Having tried some chicken Katsu from other restaurants, we expected the chicken to be a bit dry; however, to our surprise, it was super juicy and tender! We also got a side of beef slices, which was torched rare thin slices of steak drenched in vinegar and crispy minced garlic. You could tell that the steak were high-quality and fresh. It was our first time trying such dish but it turned out good and was definitely worth the experience. Both of our visits to You Don Ya so far have been amazing. Ordered the unagi-oshizushi (eel) with karaage (chicken) on the side. I really loved the karaage, it tasted amazing with the sauce and lime on top. You have to try the karaage if you come here. The eel was okay at first, but I feel like they put too much rice in each piece which makes it hard to eat and almost ruins the eel flavour. They used the small sweet shrimp rather than the big botan shrimp (which I was hoping for as some of the other places I've been to give botan ebi for Kaisen and hokkai don. I know the menu pic doesn't show botan ebi, but still). The portion size is decent considering there's soup and salad. Overall, it was only so so. Oh, and they didn't include any wasabi... Hmm. Newly opened Japanese don-style restaurant. At probably one of the most high traffic spots in Toronto so undoubtedly must be hard to balance volume and quality. That being said, had the kaizen don (assorted sashimi rice) - quality of fish is solid, premium. Good selection of other dishes too - some Chinese-style snack dishes here and there (popcorn chicken, other assorted fried goodies etc.) Originally from Asia, I personally love don-style restaurants (think Yoshinoya); Gyu-yuga down the street is a good choice however only curry so still missing a solid mass-market don-style restaurant. Hoping this place will last! P.S. stop using those horrendous wooden buckets for don (triggers bathroom vibes)...absolute novelty. Otherwise do try it out! read more

Came for a weekday dinner, the restaurant wasn't busy so we were seated promptly. We ordered the bacon steakie don with added cheese, kaisen don, and beef tataki. Not gonna lie, I was pretty disappointed at the portion sizes considering the price. The beef tataki slices were very tiny, and the dons were pretty small. I would say that they can satisfy your hunger but not really fill you up, you know? Despite the portion size, we liked the food. Beef tataki tasted great, bacon steakie don was delicious, and the sashimi on the kasien don were fresh. Service was pretty good too. Food came fairly quickly and servers were attentive as they kept on refilling our drinks. I would say that You Don Ya is a decent place to grab lunch/dinner, but it's not outstanding. read more

Very nice little restaurant with good service but at the time I went it was cash and debit only. I tried the karubi don with cheese, and I gotta say the meat was plentiful, nice and pink and it was soooo juicy. Definitely going to repeat on this dish. read more

You don ya which is known for their bowls which you can get topped with many different ingredients such as chicken, beef, shrimp and more. I tried the gyudon or the "beef bowl" which is a known comfort food in Japan. You get juicy sliced beef over a bowl of steamed rice. Tasted good but wasn't a memorable dish for me overall. They do also have sushi that I didn't get to try this time but maybe next time! read more

A simple yet more pricy spot. I have been to various don places and this isn't super amazing or stellar but it hits the spot if your looking for a nice rice bowl. You start off your order with paper and pencil. You basically check off what you want in your bowl, miss soup and pork broth for choice of soup and salad. I got the gyudon beef which I added 99 cent for a spring egg. It was nice as the egg added a creamy texture to the whole bowl. Overall a decent spot but nothing overly amazing. read more

Came here for dinner with a few friends and was very pleased with the interior! The restaurant only had a few tables occupied, so we were seated immediately. I ordered the Bacon Steakie Don and my goodness, the way they marinated the pork belly was just perfect. The dish became a bit repetitive later on, but that is to be expected with pork belly. I don't remember exactly what my friends ordered, but I know for a fact that they fell in love with their meals as well. The service was great, and I don't recall there being any free wi-fi. Nonetheless, I am definitely coming back to try out what else this place has to offer! read more
