Been to Japan twice and this place is on par with the don places we went to there. Beef was cooked medium rare and we ordered a egg yolk to dip. Rice is actually Japanese rice and good quality. The location is really central and accessible. Not many don places in Toronto, especially in dt core. Food was pretty good. Service was pretty slow though. I found the oshizushi - pressed sushi, to be the best value item on the menu. Honestly, I was a pescatarian when I went and regret it deeply. I found the chirashi don disappointing however, for what was mostly sushi rice and sparse, paper thin slices of salmon, squid, sweet egg for $16.85+tax. It looked like a nice mountain of fish when it arrived, but it was very deceptive, it was actually a mountain of sushi rice with thin slices of fish laid on-top w a lot of sweet egg. I can't get ove how much rice there was... Felt scammed tbh. I would not recommend this dish. The karubi don was much better, although the portion was much smaller (and less rice). I enjoy myself some rice bowls so I was excited to come by this place after it's been open for some time. I was greeted at the front and immediately informed of their cash and debit requests. The space could fit a good number of people alongside the extra seating in the back. I arrived on a weekday around 5pm so I was able to choose a seat near the kitchen. The co-workers all seemed to get along, but the noise level seemed a bit too quiet (and unenthusiastic) compared to other Japanese restaurants I've been to. Individually the staff are friendly. Food preparation was maybe 10 minutes, which was not a problem since your choice of pork broth or miso soup then salad is provided during your wait. I ordered the Gyu Suji/Karubi Don (beef tendon and grilled beef). The tendon was not as soft as I expected, but that's a minor inconvenience to the rest of the dish. Firstly, the slightly sweet sauce mixed with the grilled taste of the beef and the texture of the tendon was YUM! And the rice was so soft yet still had a bite to it as it swirled in my mouth. The portion was filling despite the look of it. In the end it cost me approx. $15 incl. tax, which is a bit on the high end for me, but it was worth it for the quality of the food. I would return to try the pure Karubi Don as another treat (same price). read more

The limited pork Jowl meat is just a gimmick - not as good as the regular pork in the Japanese Don restaurant on Hayden Street ( next to Bloor and Yonge Subway station ). Probably more of a 3.5 stars than a 3. I like this place for what it is -- a good option for lunch in the area. It's a limited menu, but their aburi is serviceable as is their karaage and their rice bowls. The salad isn't good (it's shredded cabbage with an odd yogurty-dressing) but the soup is fine. The food comes out pretty quick and seems consistent and service is fine. It's a bit annoying that even after being open for over a year, they still don't take credit cards (debit or cash only). If they would have a few more options (for example, allow a mix of aburi), take credit cards, replace their salad (even just the standard mixed greens with a miso/sesame dressing would be better), and maybe offer some lunch combo specials to make it a bit better priced, then I'd definitely visit more often. read more

I visited You Don Ya on a Saturday evening with 5 other people around 4:45pm and the restaurant will starting to fill up however we were seated promptly. They offer tea or water which was a nice and pleasant surprise. On a semi-cold Canadian winter day, I opted for the tea whilst everyone else in the group got the water. There were also two options of soup with your entree, miso or pork, which was another surprise as most places only serve miso. I got #1 which was a beef donburi and a side order of the karaage. Our food came out pretty quickly, however we waited for almost 20 minutes for a waiter to come and take our orders after trying to get their attention for almost 10 minutes. Therefore they lose service points here. The rest of the night was pleasant. People enjoyed their food for the most part. It didn't blow our minds but it tasted alright. I would come back if I was in the area but I would not go out of my way to come back. read more

Went here at 5:30pm on a weeknight. I ordered the Karubi-don with an onsen egg on the side. The service was extremely slow, and they had forgotten to put in my order, despite having a group of friends here. We had to remind them twice before actually getting my meal, so my other friends nearly finished their food before mine came. This was pretty upsetting. The food itself tasted alright. The sauce that was drizzled over the dish was slightly sweet, which paired nicely with the onions and grilled meat. The meat was tender and came in an appropriate portion for the amount we paid. Well I popped open yelp and saw the 3.5 star average...that doesn't make much sense to be honest. I've been to Japan numerous times and this is one of the most authentic and tasty donburi you'll ever have in Toronto for its price. Sure the service could use some polish - in the sense that they should probably hire a few more bodies, but they do offer their (somewhat slow) service with a smile, so I don't see a big problem there so long as their food stays top-notch. read more

When I arrived it was around half full but the time I was leaving it was jammed packed and there was another 2-3 groups waiting. Karubi Don is a must get item here, portion is good and the meat is delicious. Not too rare and it wasn't chewy at all. Remind me of the meat bowl I got in Japan. All it was missing was the sauce and egg on top (costed $1 for the egg as an option). The Karaage was massive it was full of chicken. Both were good but I recommended the Karubi Don. Don't waste your time here. Although the decor is very nice, the quality of the food and service makes this a disappointing experience. My boyfriend ordered a beef don while I ordered the seafood dish. We also ordered unagi sushi. The food was absolutely medicore. The sushi was mostly 4/5 rice with small pieces of unagi on top. Only the rice on my seafood dish was seasoned compared to the fish on top. The beef was cooked to well done. Each dish comes with a salad and soup. The miso soup was the most recent dish. Japanese places are popular these days. Ramen was the hype back then. Now we have this "don" place (and there is another don place near Yonge/Finch). Just because it is Japanese, and gives off authentic Japanese vibe with Japanese speaking staff, it doesn't mean the food is special. At the end of the day, I still look for taste and value. I had their supposedly famous Karubi don. I've had better beef bowls right in Toronto. In J-Town you can get a wagyu beef bowl during lunch hours. In my home area, there's Torch sushi which also does wagyu beef bowl. This beef bowl is edible. I'm disappointed by the weakness of the sauce. The beef quality is "ok". Now...I know this is not wagyu beef, but that's exactly my point. If you are not using wagyu beef, there should be more reason to make the sauce stronger! If this is their most popular dish, I don't think I need to try their other dishes. Price I find acceptable. Didn't find issues with service. read more

Good value beef rice bowl aka the "gyu don" as compared to some of the more premium options. This item is promoted at the bottom of the menu but isn't given a thumbs up/callout. It deserves a thumbs up! The hamachi rice wasn't worth it, imo. Service could be more attentive, but is pretty standard for this type of fast causal place. read more

If you want Japanese rice bowl, their specialty, don with loads of toppings, this is an excellent option. Recently had dinner with family (a member celebrating birthday) at this restaurant on Dundas and Bay and it was a very enjoyable dinner! Every don tasted amazing, tickled our tastebuds. We tried each other's meal and all of them were absolutely delicious! Highly recommended are the most popular, Karubi Don, (beef done to perfection,) Hamachi Nabe, and Kaisen Don. Portions are perfectly sized, hats off to the chef. Overall our dining experience was very rewarding. We were even complimented with a delicious birthday cake, which was totally unexpected. It was more like taiwanese fried chicken, where the batter is a little floury.
