After I posted about the bad hair cut I received, I was messaged by the manager and offered a credit to come back and get it fixed. I really appreciate that kind of customer service, and she also gave me some recommendations for stylists that would do a good job fixing my hair. I made an appointment with Carly, and she did a great job! She recognized that the original cut was quite odd and noticed the chunk of hair that was missing in the front. She listened to what I didn't like about my hair and cut it exactly how I wanted it done. She also took the time to answer my questions. I still have some work to do to get back to the length I wanted, but I love my hair right now. I'm giving a 4 star review (despite Carly's 5 star hair cut) because I have now had 2 stylists that I really didn't like and 2 stylists that I did like. The customer service is great from my experience, and the salon is cute and well kept in a convenient location. read more

I had a hair cut with Kerrie recently. She dropped brushes and towels on the floor, and was going to use the brush on my head, but I had to say something, or, dirty brush would have been on my head. My haircut was uneven, and now I will have to go somewhere else to have it fixed. Her appearance was slovenly. Also, I think she was ill, because she kept rubbing her nose with her hand and then continuing to cut my hair without washing her hand. At one point she actually coughed right into my hair without covering her mouth. It was gross. She is supposed to be master stylist, but I was unimpressed by the haircut. I did not get the neck massage, or, hand massage as advertised on the Web site during my hair wash. She did not wipe water out of ears after the hair wash. I washed my hair right afterwards because I was afraid of how uncleanly she was. I will not be returning to this salon. read more

I had an amazing experience here. My stylist was Neil and I couldn't more highly recommend him as a stylist. He instantly understood what I wanted and executed it perfectly. I left feeling completely thrilled with everything about my hair and cannot wait to go back, but a week later I still feel like my hair looks amazing. My experience and haircut was the "worst" haircut I have ever had in any Aveda Salon that I have stepped into! I started with Aveda as a pure privilege member here in San Diego almost 30 years ago. Since then I've been to Oregon, Florida, Colorado Springs, Arizona, Hawaii, New York, Rancho Mirage and back to San Diego. I've had numerous haircuts some great and some not so great but the one I recently had with Dulce at Young Attitudes in La Jolla, CA was the absolute worst!!! I went in with a picture no less and asked for my already short hair to be slightly trimmed just to freshen it up and instead I got a razor cut butchering!!!! The sides were cut so closely to my scalp you might as well have used a clipper set on 0. And to top it off she gouged my side burns with a lack of blending techniques. Mind you I did not have razor cut sides or side burns to begin with but sadly ended with them. Perhaps she should revisit a ladies cut in training!? Not happy very disappointing and will never visit "Young Attitudes" in La Jolla again and I will tell everyone I know and more! read more

I came here for the first time to get a cut and color and I had a wonderful experience! I had never had my hair dyed before but after showing Carly some pictures, we talked through what I wanted and she showed me some swatches and explained what would look good. After about 2 hours everything was done and it turned out exactly how I wanted! The cut and color was $180 and I used the $20 off coupon they have on their website. I walked into Aveda after being away for months and was lucky to book with stylist Neil, a serious master colorist who has owned his own salon. He was able to bring my light brassy brunette hair back to a beautiful ash color by adding a few more highlights, toners, plus treatment. Called the salon and was able to make a same day appointment. Receptionist was pleasant and helpful! When I arrived to the salon, I was offered a beverage and waited only a few moments for my stylist Ann Marie. She listened to what I wanted, and gave me her suggestions as well. Started with a massage- LOVED the amount of pressure- it was very relaxing. Shampoo was as equally enjoyable. I am also very happy with the cut and how she styled my hair too. I'm a client that closes my eyes and just likes to enjoy the experience and she respected that. After my blow dry we chatted while she finished styling me. She was very kind and easy to chat with. I had stopped in about a month ago and talked to the nice gal behind the counter about their services. She gave me 3 cards for 20% off for new customers. Today I came in for a hair cut and I had one of the cards with me. When I handed the woman behind the counter my card she said it was for waxing and not for a hair cut. I told her that I was given 3 cards and just grabbed one before leaving home and assumed it was for the hair cut. She gave me "attitude" about having the wrong card but finally, finally said OK when I promised to bring that card in later on. . I am a mature woman who expects customer service with a smile not a stern face and a reprimand. The card is for new customers only and if she had looked in the computer she could have easily seen that. Maybe if Ms smarty pants wasn't at the front desk they could keep more customers and not need to give out the discount cards. read more

Yesss, found a new hair dresser :) I hope she does just as good a job next time as this time. Her name is CARA and she's new-ish to the salon (not new to cutting/coloring hair though). It costs only $40 for a haircut from her which is awesome!! And they have 20% off for new customers, so it was only $32! Best price I've ever paid for such a great cut & blow-out. I had a lot of split ends and needed a layered cut with lots of body and volume and that's exactly what she gave me. She taught me about how certain scissors should be used at the ends of the hair vs. the crown when taking weight out. She seemed very knowledgeable and I trusted her. Her blow out was amazing too! She used to work at Dry Bar in Del Mar where they only do blow outs and styling so she's a master. She gave my hair so much bounce and body with a little curl and it's stayed nice for a whole 3 days! I haven't had to do my hair, it's so nice. I WILL be back to see Cara and I am recommending my good friend to her who gets her hair colored with highlights and who likes her hair straight. I got word that my girlfriend was headed in to this place for a cut & color, and wanted to surprise her for her upcoming birthday by paying for the appointment ahead of time. Stopped by about a week before and was told by the receptionist that there was no way she could help me (wtf...serioulsy?!?) and that I had to stop by or call on the day of the appointment. Okay.... ...so the day of the appointment comes, and I call in. I talk to the "assistant manager" who takes down all my credit card info and assures me everything will be taking care of that afternoon. Hours pass, no excited "Thank you" calls from the girlfriend, no news - and finally I have to ask: "Did you pay for your cut today?" The answer was "Yes". My girlfriend even went so far as to tell me that the salon was slow and that people were "just standing around, bored". So their failure to execute this request wasn't because they were helping other customers... This went from being a fun birthday surprise idea to an uncomfortable & weird conversation with my girlfriend, all because customer service doesn't take a high priority here. I have no idea what kind of work they do but to say I was bummed out would be an understatement...thanks for nothing Young Attitudes. read more

This is a good way to describe this place: It's the most I've ever paid for a haircut in San Diego ($55) and the least amount of time a stylist has ever spent cutting my hair (20 minutes max). I have very long hair and wanted it trimmed a little, with a lot of really short razored layers. I ended up with...The Rachel. Super underwhelming. Several times I tried to ask for higher layers, but there was a miscommunication (even though I came prepared with several pictures) and my stylist had a real reluctance to risk anything outside the typical haircut. read more

The hairdressers are phenomenal at this Aveda franchise. They listen to what you want and make it happen. Every time I come for a haircut, I leave happy. Beyond the hair cuts, the Aveda line - which they shampoo, condition, and style your hair - works wonders. One of my favorite products is their volumingizing spray. Try it. I've never gotten my make up or nails done at the salon; and yet I must share they do offer these services on the spot. Lastly, the customer service is great. When I get there they say my appointment is actually with some new girl. I should have walked out, but I needed a haircut for an event. The new girl chattered a lot and said some vaguely odd things. She cut my hair really fast (this was a $60 haircut), but it looked good. My receipt said I got their promoted "Stress Relieving Ritual", but unless they count washing my hair, I didn't get anything. I've been going to this specific Aveda for 5 years. Honestly, I'm starting to think the staff is getting less and less helpful, talented, and friendly. I've never had complaints about the hair cuts or hair coloring, and always loved the outcome even if it costed well beyond what I expected. But lately I've been having issues every time I go. Make sure you're not only very clear with what you want, but to describe everything you DON'T want cut. You know when you go to a salon and ask them to KEEP THE LENGTH of the hair, and they agree with you and end up cutting off an inch or two? Yes, this has been happening to me often lately at aveda. Also, I clearly asked how much the hair cut will be, they gave me a quote of $45, and once I got my small trim (which was not worth the $45 but hey, I agreed to the $45) they charged me $50. I asked why, and they said "Oh sheee charges $50 and not $45". Wonderful, thank you. Now I'm paying most of what I thought would be tip with the fee. But please, a few of the staff here are truly amazing. Their talent is obvious and they are honest with their clients. read more

My friend recommended I try a stylist named Olivia here and seriously this was the best advice ever!!!! She is very polite, very proper, dresses really well, carries herself very professionally, and takes the time to get to know you and remember you/things about you. I am horrible about being on time and am always late by at least 5-15 minutes and she has never once complained nor cut my time short. She gives a great complimentary scalp and neck massage, takes a long time massaging/washing your hair and spends a great deal of time cutting your hair and making sure it is everything that you want. She does use the Aveda products, but has never once pushed me to buy them. She also styles my hair very nicely and I feel amazing when I leave!! Highly recommend Olivia!!!! Service is great. Everyone is friendly. Atmosphere is nice. But the cut? I was so hesitant to come here to trim my bangs because I LOVE my normal stylist but she was out of town. Should have went with my gut. "There's a large space between your eyes and eyebrows, I think we should keep your bangs longer. I'll cut off a little bit first and then we can see if we should cut more." SURE. TOTALLY AGREE. So then tell me, WHY would you cut my bangs SHORTER THAN MY EYEBROWS. Heading out of town this weekend but now I feel too embarrassed to go out. So, SO disappointed. Before the stylist cut my bangs, she said that the left side was longer than the left so she was going to fix it. Guess what. Now the left side is way shorter than the right. I think what bothers me the most from this experience is that she took the time to explain what I needed and why (also pointing out things I never really considered before), and then she gave me the exact OPPOSITE, making me feel even WORSE about my hair. read more

I came in for a hair cut and asked for layers. Everyone was very nice and the place was clean and modern, but my actual hair cut was a little disappointing. My stylist was nice and took care to explain to me the products he was using, which were all positives. However, my hair cut ended up pretty much being a straight across cut with a few strands near the face shortened up a bit. I did ask specifically not to have choppy layers, but I feel as though very few layers are in my hair beyond the ones that were already grown out, even after cutting 4 inches off the base layer. Every other time I've had my hair cut into layers the stylist has done a U shape cut, but my hair just looks like one thick curtain once all put to the back. I have thick hair and prefer layers to lighten it up. For fifty something dollars, I could have just had a friend cut my hair straight across and stayed home. Their website also states "All hair services include one of the following Aveda rituals: Stress Relieving Ritual consisting of a light scalp, neck and shoulder massage; Hand Relieving Ritual consisting of a moisturizing hand massage; or a Makeup Finishing Touch." I was offered none of those things, which isn't a huge deal to me, but just a lil fyi to future customers that may want to come in. My general experience was fine and everyone was overall pleasant, I just wish the end result of my hair was a bit better. I am fiercely loyal to my hairdresser up in SLO, but it has become impossible to get an appointment with him because of our work schedules, so I bit the bullet and switched hairdressers. Tarah, you made it a gentle switch! **Cue Keri Hilson's "Pretty Girl Rock"** I came here with a couple of girlfriends and we all left looking like stunnahs. We didn't have trouble making appointments when we called a few days ahead, and we were well taken care of! I would say pretty confidently that anyone with whom you make an appointment is gonna treat you right ;) The shop is clean and has a great look to it. The workers are happy and knowledgeable. And...they have great hair. It's important! Tarah asked me what I was looking for, which is always "ummm...I don't know...just clean it up I guess?" (because I am boring about my hair, I suppose), and she listened to me, gave her expertise about what would be best for my hair, and executed it beautifully. She even somehow got me away from my flat iron by teaching me how to style it differently. Now I can wake up 20 minutes later! Patrick is AWESOME! If I lived closer to the area, I would probably get my hair trimmed up at least every two months. Also, this review is long overdue! I have very long, medium thick, hair, each strand is fine to medium and my hair is slightly wavy, which I like. I also have very thick, slightly shaggy bangs that I style daily. I went to Patrick and told him I didn't really want to change anything, but just make everything better and frame my face the best way possible...and...he did this! It was my best haircut since maybe 2007! I have been so many places and am happy yet frustrated that I found Patrick (since I live in four hours away). He gave me fantastic layers that kind of "stemmed" out from my bangs and framed my face in a very flattering way. I would say I have been to maybe 7-10 stylists before Patrick that couldn't get that I don't want thick, chunky harsh layers, but I don't want the extreme of shredded, punky layers - he got it- perfectly! In addition to this, he is a very cool and unique person. I truly enjoyed talking to him and felt very comfortable in his chair. I had scheduled a second cut (and color!) with him, but due to the recent fires, very sadly, had to cancel. I will try again as soon as I know I can commit to some time back in S.D.! read more

I really wanted to get a nice haircut for my birthday, and was referred to Jacque (Jackie) by two of my friends who both have amazing hair. I brought a few pictures of celeb haircuts I liked for reference. When I got there, the receptionists were SO nice, and offered me water and tea. Jacque was very friendly, and gave me great suggestions based on my face shape, lifestyle, and the images I brought in. She listened to what I wanted very well, and I'm 100% satisfied with my cut. Points of awesomeness: - Head massage. Oh. My. God. Phenomenal. - GORGEOUS haircut. She cut off about 7 inches and gave me a cute, slightly asymmetrical bob that's long enough to pull back for the gym, but still adorable and definitely a change...for the better, of course. - Yummy-smelling products. - No product pushing! But she did show me how to use a round brush to dry my hair to give it bounce. - Not a ton of chatter...I like when stylists sort of let you initiate conversation and don't just prattle on about their dog or the economy and whatnot. I had a nice conversation with her, though! - Free bang trims between visits! Yes!! Points of not-so-awesomeness: None! The price is a bit steep to go regularly ($50 because she's in the top tier), but for a special occasion it's great, and DEFINITELY worth it. Was looking for a salon near by for my haircut and came across this place. Its not been long since I moved here, so this was literally a first time search for me. My friends recommended few places in Rancho Bernardo , but I really wanted something close by and a go-to place for my hair needs ! I am really picky about my hairstylist and fiercely protective of my hair , so before going to a salon I need to be 100 percent sure. I scanned a lot of salons online and finally zeroed on this one. Decent reviews on Yelp and the reasonable prices helped ! I took an appointment with Olivia on a hunch and she turned out to be amazing ! First off the service overall is very pleasant from the receptionist to the stylist . They offer you tea or water which is such a fresh change from other salons..I had to wait about 10 minutes past my appointment as Olivia was still working on someone , so that was a little off putting , but the detailed job that she did on the person before me and later on me , I realised that she focuses on her client and not on the time ! Again so thoughtful ! Before the hair cut , she did a complimentary neck and scalp massage for 5 minutes which was soothing. They all use Aveda products so you are guaranteed about the quality ! Olivia listened to me patiently and understood what I exactly wanted. She spent enough time to get it perfectly right. Additionally, she handled the length of my hair conservatively unlike other stylists who just chop it off ! All in all I was really pleased with the service and my haircut and the price ! The old asthetician recently left and they have Valerie, one of their hairstyles fill in while they find a new esthetician for body waxing. OMG, Valerie is experienced and pleasant. I was visiting San Diego to celebrate my birthday with my family this past weekend. My sister and I (and my 2 month old niece) came in to have some girls time. The staff was AMAZING. They helped us with makeup, gave us samples, even took pictures of my sister and I when we asked. I don't get to see her often, maybe 3 times a year and they really went out of their way to make us both feel special. And my little niece was loving the attention, too. 4 stars because of some people who work there, but overall to me this is a 5 star salon. Been going there since 2005, in general have great service (with Kalvin, Jeremy, and Britney but they are gone) and now I see Kari (since like 2 years ago I believe) who is also great. She has a lot of knowledge for ethnic hair and curls and most important she listens. You can rest assure she will know what to do with the puffy hair and to take care of frizzes and bad hair cuts because she has done it to me! The other stylist I have seen are very good too: Carly and Alan (who will charge more because he is a senior stylist). I always feel I can go there and have a great service (in general). Erica and Brenda in the front are great (Eloy was awesome too but he is gone), and there is another guy there who is very nice I just don't know his name. They always make you feel welcome. The other girl whose name is something like Breiz or Reis or something like that (she is pretty and have long dark hair) now she will give you a bit of an attitude, I really don't care for it much and if I can avoid her I will, I am sure she doesn't do it on purpose and hope she can correct her way she comes across, because in the end, you come to get a nice service and be treated nicely, it's not an obligation for me to go there, and I always choose to go to another place, I don't want to be given the attitude. It turns off people and it's bad for the salon. Would feel very bad if this type of things grows. There is another stylist with a bit of an attitude her name is Jacqueline I believe. Strawberry blond hair. She was besides me the other day while my stylist was giving me a treatment who was kind of smelly and she was kind of rude, making a very snarky comment about moving her client because of the smell. Hey, move your client without the snarky comment, will you? I am not coming to this salon to listen to this bullshit. I complained to my stylist about it. She was embarrassed of this whole incident and she told me to make a complain if I wanted to, which still I haven't done it in person but I am writing it here. I have dark, curly hair. I am very particular about how it's cut and colored. I had been trying out stylists all over town and still wasn't finding anyone who really provided the finished product as I wanted. My hair was looking sad, the color was uneven from no one being able to get the color right, and no one had been successful in adding in the perfect layers to make my curly hair less crazy and triangle headed. I started asking around at work to some of the girls who also have dark colored hair and their cuts are always perfect. It turned out they were all using the same stylist. Only problem, the girls I asked were all Asian with straight hair - I am Mexican with curly hair. They reassured me, "Go to Kerri, she is good, really good, trust us." I booked an appointment with Kerri and as she came around the corner on my first appointment I was happily surprised to see that she has beautifully dark, and perfectly shiny and smooth curly hair - just like I wanted to have! I've always thought that you can tell how good a stylist is by her own hair - if she takes care of her own head, she's likely to take care of yours too. Needless to say, I've been a Kerri regular for the past year along with my co-workers who have been seeing her even longer. Kerri is experienced with many different hair types and has a magnificent attention to detail, which is obvious by her own shiny locks and those of her regular customers. She consistently colors and cuts my hair EXACTLY like I ask, as though she can read my mind. My curls are no longer frizzy thanks to Kerri who shared the secret - Rusk AntiCurl. It's like a relaxer, but it is not a straightener. My curls are still there, just much prettier, shinier, bouncier and frizz free. The anticurl is like a Valium for the hair. It takes the edge off. Kerri applies it perfectly, and I go in every couple of months to get the roots touched up. And the great thing about it is it's reversible, unlike other relaxer type products. And another great thing about Kerri aside from her hair magic, is her tremendously bright and energetic personality that will make the time fly by. She'll sing to you while she preps and pampers you, and you'll laugh as you leave your appointment, eager to see her again in 4-6 weeks. read more

I officially received the worst haircut of my life here recently. I simply asked for a cut just below my shoulders with long layers and instead what I got was a very '90s Jennifer Aniston cut with 3 distinctive chunky layers that were cut straight across with no blending or texturing. I now wear a helmet of hair with 3 very abrupt lines until it grows out and I can have it fixed professionally. Lesson learned- be more patient and wait until my actual stylist elsewhere has availability. I chose Aveda because of the name recognition but never again. read more
