Worst Chinese food I have ever had. Just moved to the Hill and was looking for some hot & sour soup and combination fried rice. I saw a review on here that raved about the combo fried rice. The hot & sour soup had the right amount of heat, but no taste. I didn't even finish half. The fried rice tasted like dirty water. It did not have a fresh taste at all - tasted like it had sat in a vat for days. Inedible. I will not be back. This is a small but cosy place on Capitol Hill. There is a picture of Obama with the owner on the wall. I ordered twice cooked pork and Singapore noodles for take out. The twice cooked pork was okay. A "mild" preference on some Hunan beef ended up being pretty hot -- that's OK but I'm glad didn't order spicier. The beef was a little tough and fatty, but not bad. Delivery was prompt and friendly. The sushi is above average (taste very good but the sushi is not held as tight together as Sushi Ko), and very good for the price (especially happy hour prices). However, it gets four stars for its dumplings (which, by themselves, deserve five stars). My grandmother has always made the best dumplings. I have never ever tasted dumplings like my grandmother made until coming here. And believe me, I was not expecting it. My grandmother is Austrian and this is a Japanese restaurant. But the quality of ingredients, obvious indication that the dumplings were hand made with hand made dough, made these taste exactly like my grandmother's. I know, that probably doesn't mean a lot to someone without my frame of reference, but trust me, the steamed dumplings are to die for. You know they are not frozen because, one, they are larger than normal; and, two, when you compress a dumpling into place around the filler (e.g., port, plums, veggies), there is a distinct pattern that should be made if the maker uses a his/her thumb as opposed to a machine. Well, it's definitely a thumb pattern at Young Chow and the dumplings are definitely larger than normal. I know I'm basing this review off of one appetizer, but I really must say it was quite a wonderful dish. I have eaten at high-scale restaurants all over the world. Sometimes you find the best food in the most unusual of places. I cannot attest to the rest of the menu (except for the above average sushi) but as far as the steamed dumplings are concerned, you cannot find anything better in DC. In spite of the delivery driver going to the wrong house the first two times, reversing two digits, it has still become our go to Chinese in the area. Two of us had lunch on Aug. 28 where we both ordered from the specials. There is a wide selection of specials and it's a good value. We could talk and enjoy our meal. After a series of disappointing meals, I have to downgrade Young Chow to 1 star. Despite my love of hot and sour soup, our go-to delivery option has now become Thai food from Sanphan. Young Chow has messed up our orders several times now - leaving out the rice completely one time, not putting in any crispy things for the hot and sour soup another time (those crispy things are a vital part of the soup-eating experience). They're also not consistent with their delivery times -- especially with online ordering, which I don't recommend. I ordered my food at 7:45 tonight -- when I finally called to check in on it at 8:35, it seemed like they had just checked the computer and were just starting my order. The woman on the phone tried to tell me that my order didn't go through until 8:11, but I have an email from their online ordering system with a 7:47 timestamp. Nevertheless, they told me they were busy and it would be another 25 or 30 minutes -- I got my food at about 9:10. In addition to all of that, the food hasn't been what it used to be. The crispy chicken (which used to be our favorite) hasn't been crispy the last three times we've gotten it - it's been soggy and lackluster. I tried the thai basil chicken tonight and it was not good at all. I honestly don't know if I'll order anything from Young Chow again -- it seems like it's time to find a new Chinese restaurant! read more

I've ordered from this restaurant a few times and the food has always been okay-average Chinese delivery. I placed an order through grubhub on a Saturday night. After over an hour of waiting, I called the restaurant to check up on the order. They had not received the order through grubhub, which is unfortunate but understandable. I cancelled the order and considered it a done deal. Three hours later, they tried to deliver my food. When I missed the first call, the delivery driver left a voicemail incoherently screaming something about "stupid bitch, you better pick up!" Incredibly unprofessional and unacceptable behavior. The egg drop soup is thick and has no flavor. My favorite shrimp and egg destroyed! not the same at all, and will never order again. Ever since Thai has consumed the Asian food scene, getting decent Chinese has been a real problem, Hopping from the adequete to the horrible, I sorted through the myriad of menus that have either been mailed to me or hung on the front door. Young Chow has succeeded where others have failed. Delivery to 22202, 22301, 22302, 22305 and 22314 (Old Town, Alexandria). The Shanghai egg role (read as Spring roll) was light and crisp, the filling not a bit soggy, the Fried Rice was especially good, and the Szechuan Chicken and Moo-Shu Beef were stars as well. Scoring a 7 out of ten, the best sampled so far. On the con side, the Szechuan Chicken could have been a bit hotter, but I am the guy that won free desert for ordering (much to the astonishment to the entire staff) Indian hot Tandoori grill and consuming it with gusto. Ordered delivery, when driver arrived he called to let me know he was pulling up...it took me less than one minute to grab my wallet and keys and in that minute the driver called me THREE times to tell me to hurry up. I told him I was looking for my keys and he told me I needed to give him the money through the mail slot and he would leave the food outside my door (on the GROUND). I told him no, I needed to find my keys and pay him like a normal person. He continued to be impatient and knocked on my door. When I finally got to the door (LESS THAN TWO MINUTES from his first call, when he hadn't even pulled up to my house yet) he informed me that I was not prepared and that I am not the only customer. Part of my delay was trying to find some $1 so I could leave a $4 tip on the $18.50 order. With his treatment, I decided a tip was no longer warranted to instead I told him I needed $1 back from the $20. To which he replied "F*** You, A**hole". True story. So, best advice I can give is that you will want to stand watch at your door to greet your driver immediately upon arrival, in case you get this particular jerk of a driver. This place has always been my go-to for takeout, but I can get my mediocre Chinese elsewhere, and that's what I'll be doing going forward. read more

I've ordered delivery from this place 7-8 times now. The food is decent, average to above average, nothing special. Their delivery however is abysmal. A joke has developed in my house to order from this place before you are even hungry so the food can get to you by the time you are. Without any exaggeration I can say that it takes an average of just over an hour for my food to arrive. I live under two and a half miles away from the place, 8 minute drive, never more than a 10 minute drive in bad traffic. There have been times when they give me the wrong order after I've waited for an hour. My last (and final experience) at this dump was last night: it took over two whole hours for them to deliver the food, upon delivery they gave me someone else's order, what a fucking joke. Ate lunch here on Monday and ordered the stir fry chicken with vegetables. I was disgusted by the chicken that came to my table. It neither tasted or looked like pieces of chicken. The texture was flaccid and slimy, almost like a squid. When I told the waitress, she acted like she didn't understand what I was talking about. She neither offered to take it back and bring me something else or give me a discount. Since I was with a coworker, I didn't want to insist on a refund or make a huge deal about it. Young Chow is my go-to Chinese delivery on the Hill. The food is totally fine, and while it is a bit bland, the vegetables are usually very fresh and the serving sizes plentiful.
