We needed our electric panel swapped out from the antiquated one that was installed in 1967 plus repairs to all of the outlets and switches throughout the house (aluminum wiring had to be replaced with copper). Mark and Dustin showed up right on time at 7:00 a.m. and got right to work. The original estimate was for them to have to return the next day to finish up but they worked right through lunch and completed the job in 1 day. They were both very personable and professional and were very patient with all of my questions. At the end they walked me through all that they had done and made me aware of a few unrelated issues that I was unaware of. As a person who's worked with contractors and administered contracts for almost 20 years, let me be clear when I say this, this company is a mess and you should stay clear. Sure they have a lot of great reviews, but let me share my experience. I can say confidently that any company you find will be more professional, on time, prepared, and technically skilled to perform the work you need done. Let's start with the fact that these guys said they would arrive at 12:30. They actually showed up around 2:30pm. Moving on to the quote for a specific list of #8 specific items I provided to them that needed to be done, they quoted me $440 labor + $100 materials to perform that work, plus they would quote any additional "underlying" work that wasn't identified yet that obviously wouldn't be part of the quote. Sounds fair right sure. Well they decided to only complete 5 of the 8 items on the list but still required full payment even though the job wasn't done. They said they couldn't properly plan for or bring a fan switch to replace the faulty one that was on my fix it list of 8 items. Really? They couldn't replace an exterior power switch. Really? The florescent lights on my list weren't even addressed by them other than to say we've added them to another quote. So now I'm paying for one of the items on my list twice? Then they hand me another quote 9 days later for another $990 dollars worth of work. Guess what, all 3 items I just paid for are still on the list, and on top of that one of the items they already performed is on their again as well, replacing a GFCI receptacle, so I get to pay twice for that as well. Having handled contractors for a living I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt right, so I thought I would call them and try to talk through the issue thinking we would be able to come to some reasonable middle ground, like perhaps a partial refund or more work performed. Nope. No middle ground, just closed minded, non-customer service orientated, defensive stance taking. So in the end I'm left having paid $513 dollars for a GFCI receptacle and a quote for $990 more work. If this all sounds like an experience you look can look forward to by all means hire these guys. read more

This is the second time I used Young Electric. Great work. Mark, the electrician, changed all my flickering fluorescent lights in the garage to LEDs, and fixed the flood light in the kitchen. Yesterday Mary from Young Electric called me. After talking with the city inspector, she offered to make the job right so that it would pass the city inspection and be able to get a permit sticker on the panel for no charge! They had already scheduled a date for the work and the appointment with the inspector to look at their work so we could get a permit sticker on the box. As of now, the work is scheduled for next Monday and the inspector for Tuesday. I am of course very happy with their decision. If all goes as planned next week, they will have restored my faith in their company and will receive further work from me. The only reason I am posting now, before the work is completed, is I don't want a bad review on their page when they have made a good faith effort to fix the problem. Highly recommend this company. They promptly responded to my request for a quote, provided a clear explanation for the costs and scheduled someone to come out within a week. Then they called to let me know they had an opening and I could have someone in just a couple of days. The young man who came out was very thoughtful in how he went about determining how and where to install the new outlet I needed in the hall bath; he explained everything he was doing and why; and he kept me informed about what he was going to do next. Very professional and responsive. I left a message requesting an estimate for a couple of electrical work in my home. They called me back and scheduled a video call for my free estimate. And once I signed off on the estimate, they scheduled the work, they emailed me my scheduled date, then texted me day before the job to remind me, and called me the next day to ask if electrician can come in 30min before the scheduled time. I agreed and James, the electrician assigned for the job, arrived on time. He was very professional and explained the work he was going to do. He was very nice and polite. He installed an outdoor outlet in my porch like I wanted, and replaced my recess light above my bathtub with one that's much easier to replace should the bulb burn out. Linda, the office manager, helped me navigate the quotes and scheduling and stayed in touch when the electrician was running just a couple of minutes late. I did a virtual estimate with Taylor, their dispatcher, who helped me figure out what was possible and what would make the most sense. This wasn't my first experience with Young Electric last week. I had called for a business before. The job was too small for them back then. That was commercial, this call was for residential. Let me start with I called the contractor who remodeled our home before we purchased it. We had a simple project - a 110v outlet installed to add a gas range. He said he could do it for $150, tapping into the small appliance circuit in the kitchen. The problem was his availability to do it in a timely manner. I called Young's. I told him the scope of the job and what the contractor suggested. Young's tells me that isn't to code - that that the gas range requires a separate circuit to the panel. I begin to doubt the contractor and the work he did. Young's would charge over $700 for a line to the panel. Something about this conversation didn't feel right, so I investigated more. I called an journeyman electrician who did work for my job. He said there was no problem doing what the contractor said - suggesting to not come off a GFCI line because the ignition could trigger false trips. He couldn't recite the Code number off the top of his head, but assured me there was no problem with adding an outlet off the small appliance circuit. I then researched on line and found that you cannot add a line for a major appliance to a small appliance circuit, with this exception - NEC 210.52(B)(2)Ex.2 reads, "Receptacles installed to provide power for supplemental equipment and lighting on gas-fired ranges, ovens, or counter-mounted cooking units." I called the City of Portland Electrical permits to triple check this and they assured me there was no issue with using this line since the gas range pulled minor current to power digital clock and the ignitor when we turned on the stove. Would Young's service been appropriate and safe? Likely, but I'll let you decide if you would pay an extra $600 to power a stove clock and ignitor when code indicates a dedicated line is not necessary. read more

I contacted Young electric, as they are listed by Tesla as an authorized Tesla Wall Charger installer. What a great!! exerience. My appointment was secheduled for 10AM. Around 8:30AM got a text from Mark, the electrition scheduled to do the install. Said he was their early and outside parked, and if I wanted him to start early to text him back. So I did. The job was to install a Tesla Wall Charger in my garage, and a Nest Thermostat. He started with the Nest thermostat. Took him about 10-15 min. Then he was sure to help me program and set it up to make sure it worked, which it worked perfectly. Then he installed the Tesla charger. Very quick, very clean and neat install. Mark is very friendly, and makes sure you are happy with everything he does. I just happen to also be having a problem wiht a light switch in the kitchen area. Asked if he could look at, and I told him I know there may be an extra charge. He looked at it and disoverd a loose ground wire. and tightened it up, and did not charge me! If you ever need any electrical done, call young electric. they even guarantee their work for 5 years! The owner of the company, also sent an email out to make sure I was satisfied. We had an issue with the range tripping the breaker. After range OEM came out and could not find any issues with the range we contacted Young. They were out here the next day and sent and absolute pro. Mark knew exactly what he was doing and in short order uncovered the reason for the circuit shorting out and did a great job moving the junction box and solving the problem. I called to describe how my 20-year old furnace blew out a circuit breaker and then tripped the new one I installed after upgrading to a programmable thermostat. Electrician on the phone patiently walked me through a few steps (and outlined why the thermostat should not have created the problem). Viola! Problem solved over the phone. First I spoke with Stacey to get the scope of work for the job needed and to get an electrician scheduled to come out. She was communicative, friendly, and accurate. She provided me with insurance information in a very timely manner and ensured that someone was able to come out, even though it was a last minute request. She was even accommodating to our multiple schedule changes. The friendliness didn't stop there. Mark, our electrician from Young Electric, was absolutely great! We had him scheduled for about noon, and when we called him in the morning to come in earlier, he was at our office within the hour. This job was for our office and none of us know very much about electrical work. I think Mark noticed this, and realized the scope of work would be much larger than originally anticipated. He was forthcoming about all aspects of the work. Mark came back a 2nd and 3rd day in order to finish the whole job. This was not a quoted job, but he was able to stay well within our budget. We needed some minor electrical work done, as rather new homeowners that have little experience we decided to leave this to a professional. I emailed Young Electric about pricing etc, and received a response within a few hours. They were one of the only companies that were pretty straight forward with their charges. Unlike anyone else I reached out to for quotes, Jeremy thanked me for "giving them the opportunity" to serve us. I have to say, a little gratitude for realizing that the customer is your entire business goes a LONG way in my book (so thank you for that Jeremy!). He said that what we needed done seemed like a service call that shouldn't last more than an hour, and would cost 155/hr with an additional charge for travelling from the previous job. I scheduled service within a week and was told I'd be given a head's up the morning of service when they were on their way. Well I wasn't given a head's up, but they did arrive promptly at 8:35am during an 8-9am window. The electrician and his apprentice got right to work. They were professional and quiet. Anytime they needed something moved they asked me to do it, which my Type A personality definitely appreciated. There were a few hang ups in the way our condo was wired, but it didn't stump our electrician for long. He ended up doing a few additional things which didn't tack anything on to our 1 hour of time. This included our baseboard heating being hooked up wrong in the beginning, causing strain on the elements which can be costly. He rewired it to work correctly when he replaced the 1970's thermostat knob. When it came to payment I was expecting around $200. When scheduling the appointment I made sure to document the $25 off for yelp members! When the electrician brought me my initial bill for nearly $400, he could see my surprise. He asked if that was not what I was expecting, and I said no. Then we went over the charges 155/hr, plus supplies, plus driving there, minus my yelp...why was it so much? Well he forgot to subtract my yelp first of all, so we squared that away. Then I noticed he charged me for 2 hours of work! What the bleep? He realized that he was out in his truck making the document for 15 minutes and he rounded up on time, so he over billed me. So the bill was still for 1.5hrs time, why? Well that's apparently what they charge to drive to your house! Whaaaaaat? That's the most expensive drive I've ever paid for. After I kindly disputed my initial bill, we re-negotiated the costs to reality, and we ended up with a bill for $280. While happy with the overall quality and experience, the cost of the drive still pains me. When you say 155/hr plus the cost of driving...I think about a $25 surcharge or something, not $78! Plus, I was never given a head's up, so how am I to know the ride took 30 minutes? We were not expecting the drive to cost so much, so I assume other people aren't either. I'd suggest knocking that price down in the future, or at least just saying straight up "$155/hr from the time we get in our truck to the time we are done". Surprise costs are never fun for customers, and I'm sure it puts your guys in awkward positions. read more

Two weeks ago I scheduled a small job with Young Electric. They rescheduled me three times over the course of two weeks. One of the reschedules happened mere hours before the appointment. On the day of the appointment which was to be at 2pm, they called at about 8am and asked if they could come by sooner because the job they had that morning was "not responsive." I said the technician could come over at 10am. I rescheduled my day accordingly to accommodate THEIR schedule. No one showed up by 10:10am so I called. Receptionist told me that the early morning job finally responded and the technician decided to complete THAT job as opposed to mine so my appointment was switched back to 2pm to accommodate the other job that was previously "unresponsive." No one called to tell me. I would have waited and waited had I not called ten minutes after the appointment time. This was the fourth and final reschedule. I've wasted two weeks due to Young Electric's unprofessionalism. Ridiculous. Inexcusable. Mr Electric will be here tomorrow afternoon. I would rather wait another day than give my money to this company. read more
