Nice touch with the hand sanitizers at every seat at the sushi bar. Service was on point. I got a Kirin and my fiancé got the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to drink. To start I got the clam miso soup which was delicious. Then went with a yellowtail nigiri, salmon sashimi and a tuna Handroll. I personally liked the cut and size of the fish but my finance thought it was a little too big on the cuts. This place is apparently known to give big pieces of fish. Came from out of town and unfortunately did not have the best experience. Right off the bat, parking was extremely hard to find. Every spot has a designated sign for each shop, none for Yuki. We were concerned the entire time eating about possibly getting towed. We didn't have to wait too long for a seat, however once we sat it took a very long time for someone to grab our order. The soy sauce tastes like BBQ, very interesting! No wasabi or ginger given to us, we had to ask, but then waited another 10 minutes and had to ask again. The vibe is very interesting. Everyone is looking at each other and the music is very very quiet. Service was slow. They started with one person in our group and gave him all his sushi, then started working on everyone else. Kind of awkward. The sashimi is extremely thick, however I will say it was fresh.... For $26, not worth it. The cuts of fish were 5x thicker than they should be causing everything to be very hard to bit into. Plus it was all very chewy. Needed a steak knife and fork. Will not be returning and would definitely not recommend this to anyone as there are many other really incredible Japanese restaurants in Austin. read more

Like many others, I too was very excited about a hand roll bar finally opening (having also been an LA KazuNori fan). Unfortunately, this was a pretty big miss for me from service, ambience, to food. I was seated immediately, but it took nearly 10 minutes before the host/waitress came back to take my order. Once I placed my order, it took awhile to get served by the chef partially because my seat was missing a plate! Which makes me question if my seat was properly cleaned... In any case, all that would not matter if the food hit the spot. I tried the pre fixed 6 hand roll set since it seemed to be the best bang for your buck. The set consisted of Crab, Salmon, Tuna, Scallop, Lobster, and Daily Special which was Yellowtail. Unfortunately, the rice was off and heavy handed and the nori, while crunchy, just didn't have the right texture that I'm accustomed to. The fish was fine, but the sloppy assembly took away from the hand roll experience. It is pretty new, so perhaps it will get better with time. I will consider trying it again in a few months to see if I had a one off experience. read more

It is essentially a la carte and will come out as made, not necessarily on one plate. It is small and based around the bar feel. Hands down the most amazing handroll experience I have had so far! Had the 7 combo roll and was absolutely mind blown by the quality and flavor. Each roll with just enough of a flavorful profile unique to its own. The Toro and crab is perfection with minimal add ons so you can appreciate their mesmerizing taste. What comes as a surprise is the wasabi that they serve. It has the usual burn but with a lingering umami that ranks it of a higher grade. Their ginger and soy are unparalleled. Very weird setup. We got there before 9 and were allowed to wait until almost 9:30 before being told to order to-go. Table opened at 9:28 but management still had us put in our to-go order because "chefs wouldn't want us to sit that close to closing." We so wanted to love this place. The hostess hovered so close to me, her long hair cascaded over my shoulders. She spoke so fast we could not understand a word. Not sure why so close or fast as we were the only diners there on a Friday evening at 6:30pm. The Nigiri pieces were poorly (enormously) pre-cut, on weird tasting rice (I now know it is matcha /yuzu). It was all served slightly warm and the yellowtail "special" was unappealing in both taste, texture and appearance. We had also ordered the 4 type combo roll which are brought to you in the gloved hand of the server - an unappealing way to serve anything. We asked the host if we could sub anything for the yellowtail in the last hand roll after already having the unpalatable nigiri pieces. He said nope, not possible - there was nothing he could do- not even a veggie handroll instead. Seemed odd since it had not yet even been made. I know it's a handroll bar, but I'd skip the handrolls and just go straight to the sushi. The sushi is high quality and they are generous in their cuts. This is a cool small restaurant. The decor is nice. When we first walked in we liked the ambiance. Since we got there early the wait wasn't long. After us, there were more customers coming in, and some had to wait for a long time. So get there early cus there is no reservation. The food was good, but I wouldn't consider spectacular. I have been to various Japanese restaurants around the world, including authentic restaurants in Japan, so my comments are based on personal experience with first hand reference. The fish was fresh and tasty. However, the hand rolls are a bit disappointing. They are simply maki rolls without being cut, and not real hand rolls (Temaki) in cone shape. The seaweed is not crispy and a bit on the soggy. A nice restaurant would toast the seaweed gently so it becomes crispy. There are a few new sous chefs in the "kitchen" (basically inside the u-shape tables) making our rolls. Since we were sharing the rolls, so the chef had to cut the rolls in half. The knife probably wasn't sharp enough, so he had to use his hands to squeeze the rolls to cut, which indented the rolls instead of keeping the form of the rolls intact. Inside the rolls just fish and rice without other ingredients. The nigiris were much nicer. Good portion of fish and well presentation. They were made by the chef himself so I could tell the difference. One thing to point out given the kitchen is open concept, we could see everything going on. The kitchen was a bit chaotic. The chef's (probably the owners) were sometimes impatient with their sous chefs shown by the facial expression and body language. All in all, not a bad restaurant. We will go back but just focus on the nigiri. read more

Yuki is SO GOOD!!!! We went right after opening in September, as well as last night! This is insanely good sushi, definitely the best in the Westlake area, and personally I think it rivals a sushi caliber that if UchiKo! For what you receive the food is very well priced, and the cuts of fish for both the nigiri and sashimi are MASSIVE! It's basically 1/4 inch thick slabs of fish on an amazing bed of rice, so it's a very large bang for your buck for every piece of nigiri you order! The hand rolls are amazing too! My favorite is the Unagi, it's served warm and is easily able to be dipped in soy sauce! The sushi is served quick so if you are in a hurry for both a fast and quality meal this is the place! I will say though that inside lacks a bit of ambience; though it is very nice with the lighting and the actual interior design, the music isn't what I want to be hearing while eating, and there's 3 TVs inside but are funny enough just playing the news, some reality show, and a picture slideshow of menu items. Nothing wrong with that, just throughs me off a bit. Other than that, the food is quite literally some of the best sushi you could possibly have that isn't directly in Japan, so I would suggest this place to any and everyone who enjoys a nice meal!! read more
