Yuki Sushi is a Japanese restaurant owned by Koreans. I paid $20 for a combination of three hand rolls. The hand rolls were really good, served sequentially, not all at once. They waited for me to finish the first one before rolling the second roll. I did notice that two Korean customers who were sat after I ordered, received complimentary seaweed salad and miso soup without ordering or asking for it. It was a surprise when we came in at 5:30pm on a Sunday night to find that this restaurant doesn't have any tables set up, but rather a bar surrounding the sushi chefs / kitchen. It is a small, intimate restaurant, and it was half full when we came in, but full by the time we were done with dinner. We all ordered the 6 handroll combo. The chefs made our handrolls quickly, presenting them one by one. They were simple, but yet satisfying and fresh, with you just tasting the three main ingredients of the fish, the sushi rice, and the seaweed. We were looking for a nice lunch on July 4th and were surprised to see that Yuki Handroll Bar was open. It wasn't too busy either, and I like the bar seat style of the intimate space. I ordered a couple of handrolls, a nigiri and a salad for the appetizer. They make everything in the middle area in front of you, and everything I had here was pretty delicious. The handrolls aren't that big so you could definitely eat a few of these. On the other hand, the nigiri pieces were larger than usual so I liked that. Yuki serves a selection of handrolls, sashimi, nigiri and small plates of accompanying dishes like seaweed salad and edamame. The fish is very fresh and like in Japan, it is sliced thinly, which for me, gives it a more appealing texture. The yellowtail sashimi was especially good and presented attractively with seaweed and radish slice. The seaweed for the handrolls was fresh and crunchy. The crab filling had too much mayonnaise in my opinion and the handrolls are plain, just fish, rice and seaweed. I liked that they are small, so it is possible to try different items. We didn't try the nigiri. They were a good size, but seemed on the pricey side. I'd prefer smaller ones with less rice. The service is polite and they encourage asking rather than coming around to offer. The atmosphere is attractive, but casual. Seating is at a sushi bar, but it is not at all intimidating. In short: 5 Stars is not enough when it comes to the food experience. Presentation, tastes, quality, etc. everything was amazing. Service was a bit lacking in basic elements but it doesn't diminish from the enjoyment. Austin has long needed a sushi bar that was accessible and actually good without skimping on quality, portion, or being too pretentious. That is not to say that Yuki doesn't take the craft seriously. On the contrary, the work stations and decor is neat, organized and well thought out. The experience is pretty much on par with sushi bars in Japan. We ordered various pieces both on the hand roll side and the nigiri side. We did order one sashimi and it was also good. Anyone who knows me knows that my reviews and recommendations are all highly weighted on the value (quality vs price). Yuki is one of the rare establishments where the value is right on the mark; dare I say even value was exceptional. The only thing that was unsatisfactory was service; my water was allowed to go completely empty with no attempt at refill and one of my orders was "lost"/never inputted into the system. However, none of this really takes away from the entire experience as everyone was super nice and whatever was requested was done efficiently and well. 10/5; definitely recommend and will come again. read more

Came here for dinner on a Friday evening. We arrived around 7 with a group of 4 and were told the wait would be around 40m. Since it's a fairly small location we didn't want to take up space waiting inside, so we left our phone number and went to a bar nearby to grab a drink while we waited. We came back around 45m later despite not receiving a text, apparently they had sent a text that our table was ready, but it went to the wrong number. Totally understandable mistake, but it was in line with what felt like a pretty disorganized operation overall. The staff was very friendly, but there was a mild sense of chaos the entire time we were there. With all of that said, I overall had a very good experience! I went for the 5 preset hand rolls and enjoyed all of them. Usually I'm a crab over lobster person, but their lobster roll was amazing and my clear favorite. I really like the diversity of options and definitely see myself coming back here to explore more of the menu, just at a less busy time. 2 of us shared the green tea cheesecake for dessert. It was tasty, but I can't remember receiving a smaller dessert at a restaurant before. It was a stretch for an each of us to get 2 bites. I think I'll be sticking to the handrolls in the future. Overall I strongly recommend giving this place a try, if you're living in Austin. The space is tough for larger groups, so I'd mostly recommend for solo or 1-1 dining. Charge for everything, if you want avocado or cream cheese anything additional added they refuse to do so and if they do add the above they charged me $6.00 for a slice of avocado. Totally unreal. What a hidden gem! These are probably the best handrolls that I've had in Austin. This place is a little bit tucked away and the outside is very unassuming, but don't let the exterior fool you! The handrolls were reasonably priced and I was satisfied with 4 rolls and full at 5. I ordered the special that came with 4 rolls and an extra rolla after because I loved it so much! The best part about their rolls is the seaweed wrapping, it's perfectly crisp and flavorful. Vibes wise, I feel like this place tries to be fancier than it actually is, but I like that the interior is not pretentious like other handroll bars can be. I liked how all of the seating was bar seating and the rolls were served directly to you once they were made. My friend and I really enjoyed lunch at Yuki. It's really a cute place. Most of the seats surround the sushi bar which is almost like dinner and a show! The servers and sushi makers were friendly and helpful throughout our entire meal. Just a heads up, they make sushi rolls but they are for to-go orders only. The dine-in menu features nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, and a few appetizers. We split two hand rolls (tuna and yellowtail belly) and then had several different nigiris including scallop, sweet shrimp, marinated shrimp, madai, and tuna. I was super impressed with the nigiri. The seafood had great color and texture and tasted super fresh. The handrolls were constructed nicely. I can also recommend the matcha green tea as a great lunch beverage. I had a yearning for hand rolls and glad that I found this place. It's a small place but I was there early so no waiting for a seating. I ordered the 6 piece handroll which consisted of crab, salmon, tuna, scallop, lobster and the daily special that day was yellowtail. I was so excited to see this new handroll bar open up, especially since I was a regular at kazu nori in la. Here is my honest review.. The edamame was presented pre-shelled. It wasn't anything special to be honest.... Like you can just boil a pack at home and add salt and it's essentially the same. If it came in the shell with some unique flavor, I think it would elevate the dish. The salmon sashimi tasted ok. I didn't care for the large pieces and it didn't feel like it was the greatest quality. It could be improved by having smaller pieces and in a marinade. The hand rolls were unsatisfactory. The rice wasn't warm or hot, and it just had one small piece of fish. I can't help comparing it with kazu nori--their hand rolls were crispy on the outside, fresh hot rice on the inside with plenty of fish spread throughout so each bite has the proper ratio. The ambience was lacking. I'd ditch the tvs, change the type of music, and the ditch the giant hand sanitizer bottles on the counter of each seat because it just feels so unappetizing. Last but not least: the pricing absolutely did not justify the quality of the fish or food. Like at all. I feel bad saying this, as I know they're in the early stages. There's definitely room for improvement and I'm sure they'll make the changes after much feedback, so I'm not writing them off yet. read more

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then KazuNori should be flattered. Yuki is one of the newest sushi offerings in the Austin area and takes many of its design and culinary cues from the LA/NY chain, KazuNori. As others have pointed out, it's exciting to see this type of restaurant emerge since there seems to be a lot of demand for these types of spots (the only other specialty handroll spot I can recall in town is Uroko). The interior is quiet, modern, and peaceful, with many select sake bottles adorning the western wall. We came on a Saturday morning, and since this is located in area with many offices, it was not highly trafficked while we were there and we were able to be seated as soon as we walked in. Service was quick and attentive. In terms of the actual handrolls, everything we tried was very good and in particular, I enjoyed the salmon, ikura, and uni rolls the most. We noticed after a few rolls that the rice was a bit sweeter than we were expecting, which makes me think that perhaps they seasoned the rice with a bit of sugar. It's not super sweet and by no means cloying, but something you might notice if you regularly eat at a lot of traditional sushi spots. This was my only gripe though, as the fish was fresh, the rice was a nice consistency, and the nori was crisp and satisfying. Also to note: we did try this spot during its second or third week open, so it is also possible that they were still ironing out all of the wrinkles that come with opening a new restaurant. I've heard about this place and wanted to give it a try. The seating is typical for a hand roll bar and there are seats all at the bar. We didn't have to wait and was seated right away. The menu is easy to navigate and you can mark what you would like. I got the three combo hand roll, salmon belly hand roll, and shrimp katsu hand roll. My personal favorite was the salmon hand roll. The salmon was smooth and delicious. My least favorite was the tuna hand roll but it's cause I don't like tuna. The shrimp katsu was crispy and I really enjoyed it. I meant to order the nigiri for the salmon belly, but the hand roll was yummy too. This is pretty expensive (to me) with each hand roll costing about $7. I understand hand rolls are expensive so maybe this is the typical price for them. read more

New handroll bar in Austin! This quaint new restaurant features a modern interior and bar top seating in a U-shaped design. The focal point is the sushi chefs serving up freshly made handrolls right onto your slat. Aside from handrolls, they also service nigiri and sashimi. I was on a mission to try their handrolls, and while they do have preset combos, I went rogue and opted to individually choose my handrolls, which included salmon, scallop, chu toro, lobster, and uni. The fish was fatty, the nori stayed crisp, and I was pretty satisfied after 5 handrolls. My only critiques would be the flavor on the rice was a tad too sweet and the uni had a strong briny taste. We got the set of 6 handrolls for $35. I did not like how half of the handrolls were not raw fish and were pretty much the same thing. At ROL in California, a set of 6 is $33 for a variety of raw fish and flavors. In Austin, $35 is enough to get you a nice plate of sushi elsewhere. Food Notes: - Crab, Scallop, and Lobster Handrolls: So disappointing. All basically tasted the same. Yumm! This is a great addition to Austin! We came here for lunch and it was probably the best handrolls ive ever had. We also ordered some of their nigiris and they were all really nice. The portions were also very generous. They are currently doing a soft opening and will offer omakase later on. Overall, we really enjoyed the food here and will be back to try out their omakase! 1 star -- I hope the owner sees this. It's urgent for your business. I came here after losing 35 pounds and following a strict diet. I had a $100 budget and was genuinely excited to finally enjoy sushi again. I love hand rolls, and this was supposed to be a treat. I was greeted by Barrett, who was incredibly kind, professional, and accommodating throughout my short time there. He deserves praise. I started with miso clam soup, green tea, a scallop hand roll, and both toro and chutoro hand rolls -- just to begin. My first hand roll was supposed to be crab, but the woman preparing it made the wrong one. I wasn't upset, just confused, so I calmly flagged down Kelly for help. Kelly politely explained the mistake to the woman (Ana Rosa, I believe -- I may have her name wrong -- she's a light-skinned Latina woman who was working on Wednesday around 2:15 PM). As I was speaking to Kelly, this woman stared me down with a hostile, angry expression. I tried to shrug it off, thinking maybe I was imagining it. But as she prepared the scallop roll, things only got worse. The roll itself was off -- the scallop was shredded extremely fine, mixed with a strange sauce, and the texture and flavor were completely unrecognizable to me. I've eaten hand rolls all over, including in Japan, and have never had scallop served that way. Still, I kept it respectful after speaking with Kelly again and said I'd move forward with the remaining Toro and chutoro rolls. That's when the situation truly became unacceptable. The sushi chef -- this same light-skinned Latina woman -- completely exploded. She started yelling at Kelly right in front of me and even shushed her aggressively. Kelly was calm and professional the entire time, simply asking her to make the rest of my order. The chef's behavior turned confrontational, loud, and genuinely scary. I told them I didn't want anything else and just wanted to leave. Instead of stopping, the chef went to the back kitchen, yelling even louder -- what I can only assume was directed at Kelly -- and started slamming things aggressively. The energy in the restaurant instantly shifted from calm to hostile. I no longer felt safe. She then came back out and angrily made the toro roll even though I politely said "no quiero" in Spanish to her. She then asks me in Spanish, "¿Cuál es el problema?" ("What's the problem?") -- with an aggressive tone. I stayed calm and politely responded in Spanish, "No estoy enojada, solo me siento incómoda por tu comportamiento" ("I'm not angry, I just feel uncomfortable because of your behavior"). Her response wasn't apologetic or understanding. She continued acting aggressive, and the tension only got worse. Another Latina woman with darker skin eventually came out and politely asked me in Spanish what was wrong. I appreciated her kindness and professionalism. I explained again that I wasn't angry, just very uncomfortable with the other woman's behavior. She nodded and remained calm, which I appreciated. In total, I only spent $12 and still left a $5 tip -- only out of respect for Barrett and Kelly, who were both excellent and did not deserve to be treated that way by their coworker. As someone who used to waitress, I take 1-star reviews very seriously. But what I witnessed was completely unacceptable. The light-skinned Latina sushi chef was aggressive, unhinged, and completely unprofessional. She created a hostile, unsafe environment and drove away a kind, paying customer who came in excited to eat and support the restaurant. Her behavior was disturbing -- yelling, slamming, glaring, shushing coworkers, and acting like she wanted to physically confront me. I hope the owner takes this seriously. That woman is a liability to your business and the energy she brings does not belong in a restaurant like this. Our server was helpful in explaining the menu and checked up on us every now and then. I got the salmon belly and tuna nigiris. They were MASSIVE, and it was good fish quality. The nigiris had this matcha rice which paired well with the fish. For hand rolls, I got the salmon and scallop. Both tasted delicious with an umami flavoring. NEW Hand Roll Bar in Austin! Soft opened about 2 months ago in the beautiful West Lake Hills area of Austin. I ordered the clam miso soup, 4 piece handroll set, and an ikura nigiri (my FAVORITE!) Strip mall might fool you, but this is high quality fish served efficiently -- and delicious. There are no tables, just a U shaped sushi bar with high top chairs. They'll cut your rolls in half, even the most expensive ones. The rolls come to you 2-7 seconds after completion, so the nori is crisp and the rice is warm. It's not Nobu or Ginza, but I'm giving it 5 stars for being such an amazing deal. read more
