This place was busy and the service is very friendly but I wasn't that excited about the sushi. It was mediocre at best. I wasn't impressed by any of the rolls we tried and we had a hard time finding anything that we liked on the menu (strange for us). Everything had cream cheese and there wasn't a lot of spicy rolls. We ended up having a spicy tuna hand roll, hong roll, 49er roll, spicy tuna. We dropped over $100 for two people and the image below is what we ate. The place is a bit run down and old feeling, which made it kind of depressing. Seating is not comfortable. They also brought us soup with no spoons. We asked if they had any and they said no so we just slurped out of the bowl. Ok no big deal until we saw the table next to us eating with spoons. My little family and I were just getting back home after being away for a month, on New Year's Day of all days. Reality hit fast, work the next day, unpacking to do, house to reset. Sushi was the only thing that made sense. We initially had another spot in mind, but it had permanently closed. Sushi Zono popped up first on Yelp, and the photos immediately caught my eye - clean, fresh, and inviting. I called to check how late they were open, not even planning on dining in... but from the moment we walked in, plans changed. We were warmly greeted and seated by the sweetest hostess, Nikki. The vibe was cozy and homey, which was exactly what we didn't know we needed after a long day. The menu looked great (photos would've been a nice bonus), and even though our little one was feeling vocal, the staff and chef were nothing but kind and welcoming. Then came the real win: Nikki had mentioned uni. My eyes lit up. Nikki kindly checked if they had any left, and lucky me, they did. I hadn't had uni in so long, and wow... it was absolutely delicious. Like, hit-the-spot, why-didn't-I-save-this-for-last good. No regrets though - cause we'll definitely be back. Everything we ordered was fresh and flavorful, and the 49er roll being common - probably the best I've had. Even their lemon on top was refresshhhing. This is the first and only one-star review I've EVER given a restaurant. I'm taking into account that perhaps they were just having a bad day, but restaurants are one of those enterprises that simply CAN'T have bad days, otherwise they wind up with one-star reviews like this. The food was inedible; greasy, overcooked and served without the little side sauces and garnishes that are part of the dish itself. And those sauces and garnishes were badly needed here because the food tasted as though it came from one of those abominable little teriyaki drive-thru huts that were once so common in this town. They became extinct because they served food the same way Sushi Zono does -- and perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here. read more

My significant other took me here for Mother's Day dinner today, and the service was unbelievably slow. There were hardly any customers, which now makes sense because they probably experienced the same thing we did. It took almost an hour before we finally received our food. To make matters worse, the man working behind the counter had his two very young daughters there while he was working. The children were screaming, crying, spinning around on the swivel stools at the counter, and one of the girls was even standing on the stool, which was unsafe and disruptive. We asked twice how much longer our food would take, and both times we were told "3 minutes." Instead, a small bowl of lima beans was brought to our table as a "compliment," which honestly felt odd considering how long we had already been waiting. What made the experience even more frustrating was watching another couple come in well after we did and receive their drinks and food within minutes while we continued to wait. This is ridiculous! I've ordered many times in this restaurant with proof from Grubhub. Last time the staff made a mistake by giving me a wrong item. The setting is gorgeous with a gate by the front door that resembles a street side entrance in an imaginary town. The lighting is bright and cheerful and the staff are very welcoming. You have the choice of booth seating (seats 4 comfortably) and table seating. The section dividers give the booths a secluded feeling that I really enjoy. They have an amazing sparkling matcha. I got the strawberry flavor and it blew my socks off. My partner dislikes sweet and fizzy drinks, but he agreed that the bitterness of the matcha really balances the drink. It was just for me, but we ended up sharing! The rolls are very good. We got three and the standout was the 49er's roll.
