This place is my favorite. I have eaten a ton of sushi but I always compare it to Yumi. They have a large variety of specialty rolls and you can create your own. They also have a nice selection of cooked food as well. A nice perk is they give you Veggie Tempura complimentary which is yummy. The staff is amazing, I always have the same waiter and we joke around the whole time and he knows what I like so when he makes suggestions they are always right on. Nice place and sushi is solid. The prices aren't the cheapest but for sushi at the beach its about right. I had the sandy hook roll which was good. I do wish the seaweed salad didn't have mangos and all that other fruit in it but the miso soup was very good. read more

Great great sushi. I love that they deliver to Highlands (parts, not all) and I like that it's a Byob. That being said we went with a party of 5 and had a nearly $600 bill with out alcohol. Sushi was good but expensive for what you get. Sushi plate is 5 small pieces sushi and a roll for $30. Overall it was "meh" in my opinion.

Amazing food, but the worst service we've ever had anywhere--really. The couple next to us was seated after us and received their starters before our order was even taken. If we hadn't driven from central NJ we would have left, but we were tired and hungry. We had to finally flag a passing waitress down and beg her to take our order. Our entrees arrived 15 minutes apart. I can't understand how a restaurant with such a great kitchen can have such a dreadfully run front of house. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The food is excellent and fresh. I generally order multiple courses of small plates. All the sushi and sashimi is well prepared. The specials, shrimp, cashew and frisée salad and the mushroom salad, were both delicious. The shrimp shumai and the tuna pizza are perennial favorites. Went with my wife, service was attentive but the food was very disappointing Had the seafood coconut curry soup - sounded good on the menu, but it was very small and had one scallop and one small shrimp. Soup had a little more flavor than warm water. She had the chicken rice miso soup - once again sounded like it might be interesting, but wasn't even close. We also ordered two salads, one of which was downright weird - a romaine salad with a citrus dressing placed in parmesan tuile bowl. The flavors did not go well together at all. Since we had read about their sushi, we decided to try one of their special rolls (expensive by even posh New York standards). This was even more disappointing since it was small and mediocre at best. We were still hungry but decided to cut our losses and leave. My favorite things to order are the Avo-Ebi Cone which is Shrimp and Avocado with Lemon-Miso Sauce in Crispy Rice Paper Cone. Then the Spicy Coconut Seafood Soup which has Shrimp, Scallop, Kaffir lime, Lemongrass, Sweet Basil, Enoki Mushroom...then I finish it off with the Ocean Avenue Roll which has Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna & Avocado, in Soy Paper with Spicy Kabayaki Sauce! If there is room for dessert, you must try the Tempura Cheesecake - cheesecake, rolled in, flaky pastry tortilla served with ice cream and fresh mint leaves. YUMi! read more

I have visited this restaurant on 2 occasions. The service here significantly detracts from the experience. The hostess and the server were objectionable. We were not warmly greeted at approaching the receptionist/ owner. The server was aloof and curt, cold and indifferent and rushed us throughout the meal. We were pressured to order before having an adequate or acceptable period of time to view the menu. We were told when we made the reservation that we would have to vacate the table in 1 hour and 45 minutes. We finished the meal due to the rush job in less that an hour. We stayed for the entire 1 hour and 45 minutes and at that point the restaurant was less than half full. I glanced at the reservation book on the way out and there were 8 reservations for 20 or 25 tables. We were not thanked by the receptionist or owner upon leaving. The sushi was variable meaning some good and some mediocre and overpriced with small portions but the overall experience was poor and I would not recommend this restaurant nor will I ever return. read more

I am a sushi fanatic...it is by far my favorite food. Yumi is delicious. A lot of unique rolls but best of all fresh fish. Reminds of a New York city sushi bar. They have outdoor seating there and it is BYOB. It is a bit pricey for NJ (more like NYC prices) but if you serve me fresh fish and unique rolls I can justify that. Best sushi place around the central Jersey shore hands down....no close second and I have tried them all. Great sushi with a nice bottle of your own wine....can't beat that! read more

This is one of my favorite sushi places! Our usual server Monique is awesome and never steers us wrong. Every one of her recommendations have been amazing. It's sooo hard to choose my favorites but I'll try! For appetizers: the coconut lemongrass seafood soup is the best! The kanpachi carpaccio is amazing. Also, love the seafood pancakes and Shuuen roll! My favorite main dishes are the Red Curry Prawns and the Pan seared sea bass. Yumi is a bit of a drive for us but well worth the trip! We were in the mood for "Asian" food the other night and decided to try YUMI, where we hadn't been since well before "Sandy" and what a good choice it was. My Pork Tenderloin was cooked perfectly: medium rare, just the way I like it and oh so juicy and tasty!! The portion was huge and easily enough for the next day's lunch. My wife loved her "soy marinated chicken" and our friends feasted with gusto on their "delicious" sashimi. Out of curiosity I ordered scalion pancakes for the table. I had had this dish in Florida and wanted to try Yumi's rendition.....well, no contest!! Yumi's with its accompanying sauce was delectable. The best place for Sushi in the area. Fish always fresh, and Shuenn always imaginative in taste and presentation. Make sure to try the Tuna Pizza, Thai Beef Salad (the dressing is to die for), Japanese Aji app, Sashimi platters can be ordered by person, Shrimp Wontons (order spicy).
