This place isn't much different from five guys bit with better fries. We came for lunch service and it took like 15 mins to get our food! Both ordered the single bacon. Meat wasn't seasoned that great, bacin was crispy. Fries were yummy with their seasoning. Just not a special burger (I'm not a five guys fan either) and way too long of a wait for lunch service. Ugh... Sort've like if Five Guys did everything wrong. Look, it's a fast-food burger, so don't expect much...and if you are truly enthralled by this...well, I've got some chicken strips and fried poppers to sell you. That being said, Five Guys manages to do this kind of thing better. Both places serve up messy, greasy, ridiculously unhealthy burgers that are all cooked about the same. Don't expect a nice outside char combined with a good medium-rare pink middle. But somehow Five Guys doesn't go as overboard (which is saying a lot), and despite both places basically serving generic fast-food beef patties, Five Guys' burgers really taste more like meat. I got the single burger, with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and onion, with Z sauce and it was one of the greasiest, heaviest, and honestly unappealing burgers I've ever had. It was falling apart. The bread was half-mush within a minute or two. The odor of generic fast-food was dominant, with little-to-no beefy burger aroma...or flavor. Just eating half of it left me feeling ill. I have no idea what the praise is about the toppings - so, they offer a bit more than lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle? Are green bell peppers, A1, jalapenos, and banana peppers that mind-blowing? Hell, should they even be on a decent burger? Don't even get me started on that crap called A1... The Z sauce is awful - a lard-like mix of mayo with perhaps some Thousand Island Dressing. The onion rings are equally awful. As they cool, their thick, doughy, breading quickly goes from crisp to just plain dense and gross as the mammoth amounts of grease soak in. Finally, as a few others have pointed out, at least at this occassion, the folks behind the counter seem especially curt and prickly; you will not be getting service with a smile here, Honestly, Wendy's beats this place 7 days a week. I think it's more of a 4.15 star place, but I'll give it 5 to balance out some of the other early reviews. My wife and I enjoyed this joint even as they were going through their opening jitters. Burger was solid. They copied the 5 Guys script, which is fine, since there isn't a 5 Guys around Tenleytown. Fries were serviceable and plentiful. What I really liked about this place is the cheesesteak. Surprising, I know. But as a former Philly resident, I can say that this is a passable cheese steak. The bread is soft, which you may or may not like. When you add the mushrooms and onions, you can imagine this being sold at a food struck on Market. Granted, it's not gonna bring you back to South Philly, but it's one of the top 2 or 3 that I've had outside of Philly. Reasonably priced. read more

The bf and I came here with a Groupon today. This was right before the lunch rush; I'm glad because it got really busy when we were leaving around noon. It's right across from AU but I wish there was one closer to my house! Think 5 Guys meets Elevation Burger; that is Z Burger except with better buns. The milkshake list was enormous. I wanted to try the Smore but my bf got the Rocky Road instead. We also ordered the small onion rings which was housed in a whole bag! The food is okay, but not great. The prices are okay, but I don't feel like you get much value for your money. The main issue is the customer service, which is basically terrible. The cashiers are incredibly rude, disorganized, confused, and seem maybe a little bit daft. The cashiers also seem really smug in their rudeness, like they're competing to see who can give the worst service. They couldn't or wouldn't answer basic questions and one guy yelled at me and asked if I was deaf because I didn't pick my order up right away (I was using the bathroom). The BEST veggie burger ever! It came piled high with daiya cheese (vegan cheese that tastes delicious),tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, onions, jalepenos, ketchup, and mustard. I'm fortunate to have caught a bite to eat at Z Burger at a time where the wait was not too long and the food was perfectly cooked. I admit that I ordered a double bacon cheeseburger with seasoned fries. However, I did not finish all of my order of the seasoned fries and saved some for my husband because even the small sizes of the Zburger fries can feed at least 2-3 people. I had a hybrid of rootbeer and ginger beer to drink. The whole meal was appetizing even factoring in account that I did not add the traditional sauce condiments to my meal(mustard, ketchup etc) to my meal (both the double bacon cheeseburger and seasoned fries tasted good by themselves. read more

Just went here today. Have to say I was very disappointed. The cheeseburger I had was good, but the french fries - the WORST I have ever had. I didn't even have more than 3 (and the portion size [I got the regular] was immese!). The fries were covered in grease and were barely cooked. There was little to no salt on them and they were limp. Onion Rings are among the greatest thing this Earth has to offer, and Z Burger does them about as well as anybody. Milkshakes make Z Burger a better alternative to 5 Guys. Five Guys may have slightly better burgers, but the Z Burger experience with sides and shakes make it a superior experience. The guy who runs the register is kind of a pain and mumbles, but the rest of the staff is very friendly and many of them have been there since the store opened--so I assume its a nice place to work. The few times I have seen the owner in the store, I have been impressed with how friendly and helpful he was. If I had to make a recommendation, I'd say make a meal out of just the onion rings and a shake since the portions on both are quite generous. read more

Ok, so I've been going to Z-burger for a while, but I'm vego and don't like paying for grilled cheese sandwiches because they are easy enough to make. I go for the fries and the milkshakes. Which are really pretty good, if not a bit pricey...still probably worth it. I could only muster up one star for these guys because of the terrible service I've almost always gotten there. I'd say about 4 out of 5 times they fuck up my order or forget about it for like 20 minutes while other people come and go. Mostly this review is about an experience I had today trying to get their new veggie burger. I walk to the counter and ask for a veggie burger and oh could i get some BBQ sauce on that too, plus some fries. I wait about 20 minutes while other people with like three burgers in their order and milkshakes who ordered after me come and go. Then I get my order and head home. I'm munching on the fries on the way home enjoying my victory at having actually gotten something from the counter and then I get home and open the wrapper on my veggie burger. I consists of a bun, a veggie patty and BBQ sauce. That's It! WTF!!! I'm about to drive back over there and throw my burger at the freaking menu above the ordering counter. In the FREE FREE FREE topping section it says (UNLESS SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR, THESE THINGS WILL WILL WILL BE ON YOUR BURGER). This list includes things you would expect to have on a burger you just paid 6 dollars for....ketchup, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, fried onions. When I ordered I didn't say 'please don't but all the normal stuff that goes on a burger'. I just cannot comprehend why in the world this can be. It is a freaking veggie burger, why would I not want the normal veggies that come with it? Why am I expected to ask for the things that are supposed to come with the burger? Do I need to ask for the bun too? The pricey shakes are indeed delicious, but I don't think I'm ever going back here again. If I do I'll know to specifically ask for lettuce and tomato and ketchup and mustard and mayo and fried onion and all the standard things that the menu declares must be on every burger unless you demand they not be there. I have yet to find a better burger. Five Guys, Shake Shack... none of them measure up. I can't pin down why, but Z-Burger burgers are the tastiest. Also notable are the shakes in every flavor you can imagine... my personal favorite is chocolate raspberry. I also appreciate that they support their community, specifically hungry college students with discounts and promotions relating to athletic events. My one issue is the amount of fries... you'd think I wouldn't be complaining about getting TOO MUCH food, which is why I'm not deducting a star, but the smallest size can easily be split among 3 people (I've yet to finish it with one other person.) I wouldn't compare Z burger to Five Guys! At Five Guys when you get your order, the bun is already quite soggy, especially if you order your burger with mushrooms. It never happened to me at Z burger. In fact I had a take-out last time, and it was about 45 min-1 hr before my family got organized to eat their burgers at home. Even then the buns weren't nearly as soggy as you get them at 5G. This place reminds me more of In-N-Out Burger in CA where we lived until 3 yrs. ago. Z sauce is similar to In-N-Out sauce (tweaked version of thousand islands), fries are pretty good too (5G fries are super greasy). I've been looking for a local version of In-N-Out since we moved here, and I think I found it. Still hoping, though, that In-N-Out will eventually expand to the East Coast. If you are an avid burger fan like me you will enjoy this place. It is very similar to Five Guys so if you like them you are in for a treat. They offer a wide variety of toppings and they have a special "z-sauce" that you can use that seems like a combo of chipotle mayo and thousand island dressing. The food is great but the service is where this place falls short and only gets 4 stars. The zburger location i frequent is the one in Tenleytown and the manager there is a huge jerk. He is pushy and disrespectful to customers. He acts like he owns the place and unfortunately with the time I go (every Friday at 8) you are forced to deal with this prick. If he gives you any trouble ignore him and just report him, this guy is the worst. read more

This is one of my favorite burger joints!! I wish there was one closer to where I lived... BUT then again maybe that's not a good idea, because I would be HUGE...lol I always get the bacon cheeseburger w/onion rings & a drink (sometimes a shake if I haven't eaten breakfast or plan to not eat dinner). I really like that they make the food right there in the open (like 5 guys)!! Their facility is usually really clean & well stocked, unless you go during their lunch rush! To me the burgers taste better than 5 guys & they offer an abundance of fries or onion rings OR both at the same time (half & half)! LOL... If you decide to get the onion rings you have to eat them with that sauce they give you, it's SOOOOO good!! As for the milkshakes well they have a whole menu on their own so you can choose from! These homestyle rich, thick, & creamy milkshakes will fill you up and definitely make you come back to try the other flavors (75 total)... One day I will be able to say I've had all of the flavors... Keep in mind that once you've eaten here you WILL get the ITIS so be prepared to need a nap afterwards... read more

This review is for the z sandwich store which is inside the z-burger place. They have sandwiches similar to potbellies with the rolling toaster and deli meats. The sandwiches are actually pretty good and big in portion to what you pay, but the service is so slow. It's no different than a potbellies assembly line but for some reason, they have been very inefficient. I've been going there intermittently since they opened the sandwich section a few years ago but the speed of service has not sped up one bit. Overall, sandwiches are decent, you get value for what you pay, but if they can speed up the lines, that could knock it up another star. read more

The food here is solid, but it's no good stuff eatery or in n out. Not surprisingly, I ordered a veggie burger, fries and rings. i appreciate their effort in making their own patty which had a blackbean base, and I really like that the affordable prices included toppings such as mushrooms, onions and cheese. But at the end of the day, none of the items were well flavored (especially compared to ray's hell burger onions and mushrooms). As a whole, the burger was decent, but nothing special. The patty looked good, but also lacked any strong flavors. The rings were fried with a soggier beer batter as opposed to crunchy penkos or other bread crumbs. Fries didn't have much flavor either and weren't very hot or crispy. I will probably never crave this place, but I wouldn't mind giving it another try next time I'm in the area. read more

Finally got a chance to use my free milkshake and free burger tokens from the last Yelp Event we were at. The mint chocolate shake and the California Shake were both delicious and left us holding our bellies. I like all the customization options for the burgers, and they went down super easy. Bag of fries, just like five guys, but a bit more crisp, I think. The fries were too much for us to split, with a few that had gone cold and had to be thrown out, but a delicious meal for two for $2.50! If/when I'm back in the area, I'll stop by.
