Saw the online menu for this spot and was excited to try it out: PROS: we were seated quickly and the food came out in a timely manner. CONS: FLYS EVERYWHERE. Literally from the minute we sat down we had to swat away flies. (We were seated inside close to the bar). We had to constantly fan our food to keep flies from landing on them which is not only disgusting but rather annoying when you're paying for a meal out. We tried to keep a good mood about it as my husband and I were trying to enjoy a nice night out. But who wants to pay money to eat food while trying to constantly swat bugs away? It made us wonder if there were a ton of flies in the kitchen landing on all of the food they were preparing for their guests. Honestly really gross and disappointing as I had hoped to really like this place. The service was okay. The hostess was kind and friendly. Prob the best service we got at this place and we only interacted with her for 30 seconds. Our waitress was okay. She was nice but service could have been much better, a little more attentive. To start off, the service was just about perfect, the waiter was very nice and was quick when ordering drinks throughout our meal. It was prime time brunch hour and the service seemed like my table was the only one there. I got the chicken fried steak with over easy eggs and cottage fries. I actually enjoy the food here, but the wait staff could really use some pep talks on just being a little more attentive and at least pretending to appreciate that they have a job. Went for breakfast one morning and dinner the next day. Our server for breakfast didn't stop at our table for at least 10 mins after we sat down, then when she did come, that was the last time we saw her until it was time for a check. She didn't seem too happy to be there either. I understand, people have off days, but then our waitress the next day seemed just as annoyed to be there also. This has to be the cutest little cafe i've come across in awhile. Seriously! So happy I found this little gem. This place is located off the 76 freeway off south mission rd, in a pretty busy plaza. I pass by it on my way home from work everyday. Walking inside was a treat plenty of plants, succulents (which are my fav) followed by 2-4 seater tables, so on. As I look above I notice a patio area with heated lamps, a great view. Score! Very comfy, cozy. Perfect place to unwind after a long day. I entered through the lower level ..As you continue up the stairs, make a right you are greeted by the hostesses. Plenty of seating, high vaulted ceilings, fans. It makes the room bearable, provides a comfortable setting when it's hot outside. All in all very cool experience seeing all the decor. They have a bar area with tvs inside/outside. Perfect for get togethers or parties. There's parking on the lower level which is where I parked, there is additional parking if you drive up the hill, there's a sign directing you where to go. Our server was very friendly, they have specials on food for each day of the week, happy hour dranks. The portions are decent, so far every thing I've tried I've been satisfied with. What a hidden gem! Met friend here for a drink and share an order of nachos that were so finning and hood from the $5 menu. The menu had a variety of meals from breskfast , lunch, and dinner including sushi menu. The bar was full and areas to sit inside and out. Service was good and people pleasant. Prices reasonable. I'll definitely be back. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to acoustics a bit loud for me. Since we are in Sushi, Japanese food and Pacific Rim cuisine business, we are normally hesitant to order any Sushi. But we wanted to try it this time, so we ordered "Spicy Tuna Roll", and it was made with fresh tuna, not like typical frozen CO2 gassed one, which was banned in many other countries. We were staying at the welk resort and wanted to find a place to eat for dinner. This place looks like it belongs in the winery area. The service was excellent and the food overall was very good. My son's mahi mahi bowl was over cooked and made it chewy. The grilled salmon salad was excellent and ahi tuna on rice was very good. For dessert we tried the z cookie. Note: o not attempt for Sunday brunch, you will wait at least 30 to 40 mns. The decor is minimal, with wooden tables inside. The terrace is very pleasant and they provide heaters when it's cold. \ I beg to differ as to the rave reviews about the food. Hungry for corned beef, I ordered a corned beef sandwich. It was the worst: fancy paying about $10 for a sandwich, and finding that it is made with the same thin slices of corned beef you buy in a package off a deli shelf... no flavor, dry as cardboard. And the muti swirl bread turned out to be dry brown bread, no butter, no mustard... nothing. The sweet potato fries were somewhat soggy. Obviously, they have found the right location off HI 76 and Mission Avenue. Good for them. If you want a REAL corned beef sandwich however, head for TipTop Mets, the german deli in Carlsbad. read more

Came here for lunch on a sunny weekday. Nice little getaway from home in Escondido! Menu was very diverse and interesting. They have a separate sushi menu even but we opted for other options (pictured). Katsu was crunchy and slightly overdone, but tasty and sauce was really good. Hubby enjoyed macaroni salad. Philly cheesesteak was big and tasty on fresh baked bread! Brenna took really good care of us and we had a leisurely mid-afternoon lunch. So relaxing! read more

Not sure what's going on with ZCafe as of lately, but my husband and I come here often and the past few times our food has taken forever and our server is non existent. Today really was disheartening as my husband and I ordered a basic sausage and egg breakfast and our food took over an hour. I had to ask our server to check on our food and then it came out ten minutes after me asking about it. A simple breakfast plate should take no more then 20-25 minutes even if they were super busy. Over an hour is ridiculous and then after we asked about it we were just dismissed. Very sad as this use to be a place we really enjoyed going to. :( read more

Z cafe is my favorite place to go eat! I live in Carlsbad and I drive to Bonsall for it. I absolutely LOVE how cheap it is for the big portions of food. They're the only restaurant I've been to in San Diego that doesn't charge an arm and a leg to eat at while having exceptional food and service. The business is run super well and I've honestly never had a bad meal here. Service is great, the wait is a little long, usually just because it's so popular! They also have a great porch to eat out on if you want to be outside too. 10/10 amazing I hope z cafe stays open forever :) read more
