I wish we could give half a star because there was no reason for me to take off one star. I have tried most of the taco shops in fallbrook and decided to try this one in bonsall. Now I wonder what took me so long to try this spot. I think this will be my go-to taco shop from now on. I'll have to check my bookmarks but I think I've tried every Taco shop in the town of fallbrook and all of them are pretty mediocre. Not bad but not great. Friday before Christmas we really didn't feel like cooking so we decided to go have some Mexican food takeout. The wife had. A regular bean burrito which she said was very delicious. I chose the cheese enchilada plate with rice and beans thoroughly surprised the rice and beans were very good. The cheese enchiladas were equally tasty. Couldn't beat it for $11.99. great job guys! If I had one complaint it would be the paper cardboard containers that the food is in for takeout. Very flimsy but other than that excellent job guys. The food tastes great. We visited Cortez Mexican Food early in the AM on Saturday morning before driving out to Pauma Valley for a little dirt trail driving adventure up the mountain. Decided to stop here since its right off the 76, and grab a california burrito with adobada instead of carne asada. Prices were normal and comparable to other Mexican food spots in our Vista area. It was pretty quick to get our order since we were the only ones there at the time. We didn't eat out burritos until we got to the mountain, and I was immediately saddened after taking a bite. It tasted like how fabuloso smells :-( and I just couldn't get past that. I think since we were the first orders of the morning, maybe they cleaned the area where they prepare the food? And the cleaner got on to the meat or other parts of the burrito like the tortilla? It just tasted like cleaning agent burrito lol I WILL give this spot another try next time we drive that way to the casinos. I feel like this could have been a one-off because of all the great reviews I see on here, and I will update my review accordingly. Until then, just make sure to trust your senses. Recently moved to the area and I've been wanting to check out all the local spots. Last night we were too lazy to cook so we stopped by and ordered a few burritos! The pollo asado was decent and they were well sized but the carnitas wasn't shredded and the cubes were really dry. The clerk was really friendly and offered us all the sides we could want and I tipped $5 up front to show my love. However the salsa is just a red sauce and the pickled carrots were bland. That's all nbd for me. Here's why this is a one star rating: The pollo asado burrito came with a rock in it. And not an accidental kind. This is a rock someone went out the back and picked up and put in intentionally. I nearly chipped a tooth. When I called the next day to try and inform the owner that someone is sabotaging their business a lady answered the phone with simply "Cortez". I said hi and asked if the owner was around. She said yes. I said ok thanks! Then there was silence. I said hello? She said yes. I asked her again if the owner was around. She said yes. I asked if I could speak with them please. She said what do you want. I asked if she was the owner. And she hung up. She then took the phone off the hook so I couldn't call back. I have half a mind to stop by and try to help inform the owner of her/his employees practices. But then I might just avoid this place instead. My wife loved her beef tacos plate. Rice and beans were good, not great- just ok. They serve canned soda. So ... no refills. Do NOT order anything with pork carnitas. Maybe it was a bad batch? Carnitas was sooo dry it hurt to chew and swallow. Also no taste ... No bueno! I'm a carnitas (pork) snob, this was the worst. Wish I could sample the meats before ordering. Los Tacos in Las Vegas ... sample whatever meat you want before ordering, muy buen! Interesting though, Cortez Mexican was very steady with returning guests.
